Primitive Desire is an 11-track collection of the first ever studio sessions by Girls Names, recorded in 2009 in Belfast.

Primitive Desire is exactly as labeled and provides fans with a document of the band's early years as a two-piece, fuelled by a distinct nervous energy and nascent dark edge that would manifest itself much more obviously on subsequent albums.

    Dylan Carlson 'Conquistador'

    £11.99

Debut solo album from Dylan Carlson, drone metal pioneer and founding member of the iconic band Earth.

    'The doom-metal innovator' Pitchfork

'Carlson creates the soundtrack to the great American road movie that has yet to be made.' The Guardian

'I guess what ties this all together'all my musical projects and my life in general'is the idea of the quest, that search for new horizons and something unnamable and possibly unreachable,' Dylan Carlson says regarding the theme behind his solo album Conquistador.

Carlson's musical explorations can be traced back to his pioneering work with the minimalist ensemble Earth, from the groundbreaking drone metal of Earth2 to the ominous instrumental twang of Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method. Untethered from the collaborative nature of the band, Carlson veered away from American music and motifs and dug into English folklore and song traditions for his solo work under the moniker of drcarlsonalbion.

For his first full-length as the solo artist Dylan Carlson, the guitarist returns west. In many ways, Conquistador harkens back to Hex. Whereas the Earth album set out to score the historical fiction of Cormac McCarthy's examination of white settlers'horrific campaign against Native Americans in Blood Meridian, Conquistador bypasses the intermediary narrative of a novelist.

'This is another imaginary western,' Carlson explains, 'based on the real story of a conquistador and his Moorish servant in what was then the northernmost regions of Mexico, but is now the states of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and Texas. They were gone for twenty years and had many adventures before making it back to the Gulf of Mexico and returning to Mexico City and, eventually, Spain.'

Muses aside, there is an analogous timbre, pace, and pentatonic aura between Carlson's latest offering and Hex. But the reductionist principles that have always driven Carlson's work play an even larger role on Conquistador, with his expansive drones and austere guitar work saturating the sonic field while freed from the lock step of a rhythm section.

Carlson has long been heralded as a master of minimalism, and this full-length demonstrates his ability to craft compelling symphonic compositions while exercising extreme musical frugality. Conquistador was recorded at God City Studios with Kurt Ballou during a weeklong break in Carlson's solo tour 2016.

The material had been gestating for months, and Carlson viewed the session as an opportunity to create music between Earth albums as well as a chance to collaborate with Emma Ruth Rundle, who contributed baritone & slide guitar, and his wife Holly Carlson, who contributed percussion & whose picture graces the cover of the album.

'I view every studio experience as unique, as everything is always different, from gear to people to time and place,' Carlson says of the recording process. 'I have to say I got some of my favorite guitar 'tones'on this album, especially on 'Reaching the Gulf.'' And indeed, anyone that's basked in the discographies of Earth and drcarlsonalbion will undoubtedly be enamored with the lush sepia-toned vistas of Conquistador.

    2. When the Horses Were Shorn of Their Hooves

  • Bushman’s Revenge 'Thou Shalt Boogie!' - Cargo Records UK

    £12.99

    v

    Rune Grammofon

    Bushman"s Revenge 'Thou Shalt Boogie!'

    £13.49

In South Africa, there's a range of hot sauces with names like Bushman's Fire', Bushman's Hot As Hell' - ¦ and the most mouth-searing of all: Bushman's Revenge'.

Three Norwegian musicians had a few memorable encounters'with the sauces on a trip to South Africa some years back, and later when they suddenly realised: have gig in a couple of days, need name now', they chose the name of the spiciest of the lot. I guess you can say that the Revenge made a lasting impression,'says the group's guitarist, Even Helte Hermansen. And the Norwegian Bushman's Revenge recipe offers quite a mouthful in its own right.

Formed in 2003, the Oslo based trio are upfront about their love for the progressive rock of Cream and Jimi Hendrix, the galactic jazz of Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharrock and Alice Coltrane, plus the raw power of Black Sabbath and The Pixies.

Thou Shalt Boogie! is their sixth album for Rune Grammofon, a relationship that began with 2009's You Lost Me At Hello. Its velvety, warm sound was captured at Athletic Sound in Halden, Norway, close to the Swedish border - a legendary tape-only studio with a 30-year history. Although there are three rooms separated by glass, they kept all the doors open so essentially what you are hearing is everybody in one big room', says Even.

Superbly paced, and poised in the indefinable zone between composing and improvisation, Thou Shalt Boogie! achieves a fine balance between brute heaviosity and meditative bliss. Even Hermansen brought various ideas for chord sequences and melodies into the studio, but the group collectively make them their own, adopting an everybody solos, nobody solos'approach.

One of the two long set pieces on the record is the 17 minute Baklengs Inn i Fuglekassa', which includes the shimmering drone of an Indian sruti box halfway through - an innovative touch that transports the track to an unearthly plane.

The working title of Thou Shalt Boogie!, Hermansen reveals, was Yoga. The idea was to do a more meditative record than we previously have,'he admits. The drone is a small tip of the hat to Alice Coltrane. Her Journey In Satchidananda is one of my favourite records of all time. I wanted to have some kind of tribute to her on there.'

Although Bushman's Revenge is essentially a trio (with Rune Nergaard, bass, and Gard Nilssen, drums), they were joined on this date by keyboardist David Wallumrød, whose Hammond organ tones provide silky washes of background colour.

The band included him on a tour in early 2013 and he stuck around. The band has never been tighter and we're having more fun than ever,'says Even. The point is to keep moving - forwards, backwards, sideways, up or down, it really doesn't matter as long as you're in motion.'Personnel Even Helte Hermansen - guitar, Rune Nergaard - bass, Gard Nilssen - drums, vibraphone, David Wallumrød - Hammond organ, clavinet, Prophet 5.

    Bedroom Suck

    Lehmann B. Smith 'Poplar Music'

    £16.99

Lehmann B. Smith has written many hundreds of songs in search of the good one'. Some of these attempts have made their way onto his six diverse and critically acclaimed albums, from The Big Dry'(2009) to Thank God For My Body'(2015).

Finding his greatest success as a sideman for bands like Totally Mild and Kes Band, Smith has often been described as a musician's musician, an undiscovered talent. He is a prodigious songwriter, laboriously notating album after album of unreleased material and storing these away in his home studio for a rainy day.

With this new album written, arranged, recorded and played almost entirely by himself at this studio (reportedly somewhere in Ascot Vale), Lehmann B. Smith is like a suburban version of Prince on the outskirts of an Australian city.

He is a mystery, an enigma, something of a genius; his music will resonate in your head for days, and should you be lucky enough to witness a live performance - save that story for your children. 'His compositions are elegant gossamer tapestries that engage and inspire.

The back-porch pathos is stunningly interwoven with haunting reverie and a morbid curiosity ' about the physical nature of the human body and all it's designed to control and contain.' - Brendan Telford, The Music

    New Heavy Sounds

    Limb 'Saboteurs Of The Sun'

    £8.99

Their third album, Saboteurs of the Sun sees Limb hurl themselves skyward to discover new worlds within the riff - time continuum.

Building on their previous two records, which positioned Limb in the thick of the UK heavy fuzz scene, the band now move beyond their sludge - doom origins to explore a cosmos of bubbling synthesizers, screaming organs, ecstatic choirs and galaxies of wild unidentified sounds alongside the heavy riffs.

Vocalist Rob Hoey says, 'We're not a band that wants to get complacent. For our third record, with the wider world around continuing to fall apart, we wanted to address big, grand themes. And to do that, we had to broaden our sonic palette.'

That's not to say that Saboteurs of the Sun jettisons any of the stomp and swagger that Limb have made their own. The grooves, the power and the chops are all there in spades - helped by a masterful production from Russ Russell (Napalm Death, At the Gates, etc.).

Each of the 10 songs that make up this record is a sonic vignette, telling a story that could have sprung from the mind of sci-fi visionary Philip K Dick - tales of reckoning with a world that is incomprehensible.

Saboteurs of the Sun is heavy - ¦ of course. But it is also ambitious and thoughtful, boldly bucking the system and revealing something new with every play. But most of all, it is the sound of a band bursting free from the world that made it, unapologetic and unafraid of what it might find.

First vinyl pressing is limited to 300 copies. In 2 colour Orange/Green vinyl. Included is a free CD of the album and free download.

Coach Hop 'I Like Taylor Swift b/w Everything"s Fine' Vinyl 7" - Pink

    £6.99

First 'Scratchy Singles Club' release on limited edition pink vinyl for Record Store Day

'I like Taylor Swift too and I don't care what you think.. bit of an instant classic' John Kennedy, Radio X

'A chunk of pop-rock with a dash of humour.. Reminds me of Fountains of Wayne"
    Gary Crowley, BBC London

'A golden voice' - Consequence Of Sound

I Like Taylor Swift is a sub-3-minute powerpop rock'n'roll anthem channelling the licks of Fountains Of Wayne and Weezer which tells of Coach Hop brainchild Charlie Laurence's fondness'for the Country Queen Pop Music Maven, Taylor Swift, using a tongue-in-cheek humour that's more disarming than it is distracting.

On the surface, I LikeTaylor Swift is a lovesong to the titular popstar but upon closer inspection, is an observation on the state of the modern music industry, 'In the song I admit I haven't really listened to much of her music but I'm inundated with images and stories about her' says Charlie. Throughout the song it verges on an admission that it's not cool to like Taylor Swift but in his trademark style, Charlie doesn't care what anyone else thinks, as he sings 'I like Taylor Swift and I don't care who knows it, it's not a guilty pleasure, it's just a normal pleasure.'

The accompanying video is a state of the art'animated affair using techniques that are an industry first, produced by Charlie's brother, and BBC Creative's Head of Design Lawrence Honderick and Sam Humphries.

The release's B-side; Everything's Fine is a subversive and evocative social commentary that expresses Charlie's acerbic wit and lookon life with the lyric: '
They say every cloud has a silver lining but I'm not a believer. I'm not gonna be bitter about it, but I don't have to be happy about it either. Everything's fine, and nothing's gonna be alright.'

In September of 2017 the Austin-based instrumental band Balmorhea released Clear Language, an album which prompted NPR's Bob Boilen to say 'I'm madly in love with this album - ¦it's one these ambient records and beautiful records that I've just listened to over and over again.'

To create Clear Language, the duo returned to their roots, working simply and with restraint, letting intuition guide them as they molded the 10 elegant, spacious gestures that comprise the album.

Now, just a few months later the duo returns with the CHIME / SHONE 7' vinyl for Record Store Day 2018.

Recorded during the Clear Language sessions, the two tracks 'Chime' and 'Shone' flow gracefully with a clear-eyed sense of reflection, as these two old friends transmit unfettered meaning through simple sonic gestures that resonate with the cosmos as much as they echo the pulse of a human heart.

In a culture dominated by the loudest, ostentatious voices, Lowe and Muller continue to prove the power and importance of restraint and minimalism.

Where to start with Alternative TV? Most know that Mark Perry, founder of Sniffin'Glue fanzine, formed the group either due to or as a response to punk in 1977.

Since the debut How Much Longer'7' released that very same year, however, Mark has remained the sole surviving original member and driving force. Not one to stand still, he has taken the group through a succession of lineup changes embarking on a wide spectrum of styles since then; the only truly unifying factor amounting to a sensibility that never once strayed from its original status.

It is through this justifiably much vaunted approach that Alternative TV have been responsible for around fifteen albums since their formation, with the last one, Opposing Forces, from 2015 on Public Domain Records, proving to be their strongest thus far with its marrying of igneous rock, idiosyncratic touches, barbed commentary and occasionally seething undercurrents of dark psychedelic noise.

Dark Places', the newest e.p., expands the mantle set by Opposing Forces, introducing four songs cascading between full-on rock to a kind of abstract minimalist electronics approach perfectly in keeping with Alternative TV's occasional traverses to the furthest reaches.

Each track, pinned into place by Dave Morgan and Clive Giblin, arrives with its own distinctive approach, enhanced further by the legendary Vic Godard's guest appearance on guitar on Like a Tomb', once more encapsulating a vision as perfectly widescreen as it is bifurcated.

Songs that see the mystical beyond the material' MOJO

Welcome Strangers'is the second record by feral pop outliers Modern Studies. Elegiac and haunted, life-giving and triumphant, this beguiling return digs deep into landscapes both real and imagined, internal and external, in a work that might perhaps best be described as 'kosmiche choral' or, if we're pushing it 'arts-und-crafts-werk'. Or, put simply, glorious pop music.

It is an elemental and often spectral world of contrasting tones and hues that is found within Welcome Strangers', one whose lyrical vocabulary is of loss, light, air, sun, growth; of spires, seeds and phosphene dreams. Here is the Britain of visionaries such as Kate Bush, Broadcast or PJ Harvey, a nation of dark magic, conflict, celebration and confusion, all at the same time.

Witness the incandescent chamber-pop of Get Back Down': underpinned by complex jazz rhythms, and string and brass ?ourishes, it manages to be both understated and epic as it explores a similar sonic terrain to Wild Beasts. Or there's Horns And Trumpets', a haunting musical perambulation that burrows deep into Britain, a warm-hued hymn for future generations, and Let Idle Hands', which abandons restraint halfway through and, in a moment of musical epiphany, runs joyously to the horizon.

Meanwhile on Phosphene Dream'the honeyed harmonies of Emily Scott and Rob St. John wrap themselves around each other like Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood had they holidayed in draughty Glasgow tenements. Or perhaps - as on Disco' - they come closer to Kylie and Nick Cave. 'It's an ever changing thing - an organism,' explains principle songwriter Emily of Modern Studies'collaborative creative process, 'there is space for each of the band to experiment.'

Shared band listening habits include Yamasuki, Van Dyke Parks, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Matthew E White, Basil Kirchin, and Nanci Griffith.

Working at Pete's Pumpkinfield studio in rural Perthshire through 2017, the band used a Creative Scotland grant to hire a chamber orchestra and a remote village hall to record them in. Contributors include sisters, wives, toddlers, freeform saxophonists and The Pumpkinseeds, an ensemble featuring violins, violas, cellos, trombones and vocals, brought together to play Pete and Emily's collaborative string, brass and vocal arrangements.

Truly, a family affair. As well as further meshing out the sound with analogue synths, tube organs, drum machines and mellotrons, some inventive techniques were deployed - a decayed tape loop of Emily's vocals used to create the stuttering rhythm in Mud and Flame for example, or prepared guitars recurring as percussion and drones.

Now they proudly present Welcome Strangers', an album of modernist pop weirdness for the 21st century, a bricolage where classicism meets experimentalism and repeated listening unearths new stories for this contemporary age. More elaborate and expansive than its predecessor, this is music as cartography, Modern Studies mapping their own multi-dimensional internal world. Welcome Strangers'. Welcome all.

Modern Studies are: Emily Scott (vocals, organs, piano, double bass). Rob St. John (vocals, guitars, synths, harmonium, tape loops). Pete Harvey (cello, bass, piano). Joe Smillie (drums, mellotron, vocals).

Their favourite records are the perfect counterbalance of the considered and the superficial. Whether it's Madonna, Talking Heads or Holger Czukay - we enjoy these artists in the background with friends or profoundly and alone.
Virginia Wing both understand and embrace this concept fully as they return with Ecstatic Arrow, an album which finds them in a place of renewed strength, optimism and clarity.

Recorded in Switzerland, in the family home of longtime friend and collaborator Misha Hering within the domesticity and gentle routine of communal life, the album represents a world as predisposed to solemn introspection as it is to blithe conviviality.

Ecstatic Arrow borrows from the heterogeneous terrain of The Flying Lizard's Fourth Wall, the exuberant technology assisted pop of Yellow Magic Orchestra and the playful sophistication of Lizzy Mercier Descloux's Press Colour, arriving at the evergreen intersection of pop music and conceptual art.

The resolute opener of Be Released and album centre point The Female Genius pair resonant Fourth World instrumentation with sonorous, loping drum patterns. Elsewhere, the sentimental march of single The Second Shift plays out like an after-hours ballad re-imagined by Wally Badarou and For Every Window There's a Curtain is coloured by the blue-lit haze of an Eventide warped tenor saxophone. Three albums in, the voice of Alice Merida Richards is more compelling and expressive than ever.

The glacial deadpan of previous records has given way to a more candid, self-possessed delivery, showing an appreciation for the humour and tragedy innate in the downtown Arcadia of Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley or even Lynn Goldsmith's Will Powers.

It's with this voice that Richards outlines a simple ideality that fortifies the entirety of Ecstatic Arrow - inequality pervades, destructive behaviours are inherited and each subsequent generation has to reconcile the debts of its precursor - yet a space exists within ourselves and each other that houses a fact we must be reminded of - we have the ability to choose.

Even in moments of frustration; the ascerbic eye-roll toward male entitlement, Glorious Idea or the world-weary Eight Hours Don't Make a Day, there persists a joy for living that refuses to be confined. A depiction of a group finally at ease with itself, Ecstatic Arrow is a tribute to the internal momentum that quietly guides us toward our destination.

Following the reissue of Hex'in late 2017, Fire Records reissue Bark Psychosis'second studio album ///Codename:Dustsucker'(2004) 'which finds the band in remarkable form' (Pitchfork).

Arriving ten years after the band disbanded, the long-awaited and criminally overlooked follow up brings with it an evolution of their sound.

Their experimentations are layered with blissed out electronics, shoegaze, post-rock and jazz are still at its fore as are Sutton's crystalline vocals. Languid and brooding, the soundscapes are dark and sustained while their 'trademark cocoon of limpid, rippling guitar figures and jazzy adornment is buffeted by sharp leftward turns' (Uncut).

Recorded in Graham Sutton's East London DustSuckerSound studio between 1999 and 2004, it features contributions from Talk Talk sticksman Lee Harris and found drumming'from ex-band member Mark Simnett.

Bark Psychosis'///Codename: Dustsucker' would go on to be their last studio album.
