    Anti-Ghost Moon Ray

    Gazelle Twin 'Pastoral'

    £14.99

What species is this? What century?' Forged in a rural idyll in Middle-England, the new album Pastoral, by Gazelle Twin, exhumes England's rotten past, and shines a torch over its ever-darkening present. Told through a troupe of multi-gender voices, in vernaculars old and new; from the shrill echo of folksong to tabloid-tinged jaunts, the artist aka Elizabeth Bernholz, presents the notion that 'there is horror in every idyll, and danger lurking beyond the 'quaint' '.
The village square - once host to centuries of public torture - becomes a floral framed postcard, dolled-up for the Summer Fête. A sunny, afternoon walk over the hills unsettles a cloud of angry flies feeding from unidentifiable remains. Bigoted vitriol gently murmurs amidst tearoom chatter, as the neatly framed pastoral picture dissolves into a solemn ennui.

Four years in the making, amidst life-changing events, including a move far out of the city, Pastoral will be the first major release by the artist since her widely acclaimed LP UNFLESH (2014, Anti-Ghost Moon Ray) and is seamlessly on-theme, together with Bernholz's J.G. Ballard-inspired A/V show 'Kingdom Come'(soundtrack released November 2017, Anti-Ghost Moon Ray) - a fascism-infused hellscape, this time set in deepest Old England.

As its sole creator, Gazelle Twin 'The Composer, Musician and Producer' has crafted an album overflowing with a frenzy of traditional and contemporary musical tropes; from early music instrumentation - the harpsichord and the humble recorder, fed through myriad electronics - to the compelling, ritualistic application of found sample-looping. Beyond Bernholz's signature choral-infusions, here reverberating like a warped Sunday Service, there are even shades of 90s house and the once-thriving rural rave scene, albeit recalled as a watery, second-hand memory.

In its consummation it is an album that feels pan-century, even pan-species. Set against a verdant backdrop of hedgerows and steeples, Gazelle Twin 'The Artist and Performer', constructs an eccentric and commanding visual embodiment of all-of-the-above - a costume fit for a court Jester of the 21st Century.
The colours of Neo-Nationalism. Coke cans, and DANGER. 'It' (not 'she') hints at folkloric traditions with a footy mascot twist. The 'Ye Olde' and 'The Everyman' of the English cliché. Brandishing a sneer and a hobby horse. A riddle and a recorder. A jeer and a square dance in red, Adidas Gazelle's, and a mad, fixed GRIN - first glimpsed in the single, Hobby Horse' (22 June, Anti-Ghost Moon Ray). A deranged, absurd reflection of deranged and absurd times.

'Bound to shake your walls and rattle your windows'
    Max Reinhardt, BBC RADIO 3

"The first bit of evidence that Elizabeth Bernholz's next album Pastoral - due out in September - could be her best to date".

Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones 'Vicious Circles' Vinyl 12"

    £15.49

Planet Mu are very happy to be releasing 'Vicious Circles', the debut EP by Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones, who aside from producing music also run the audio-visual production unit 'Fractal Fantasy'.

Zora released several collaborations on last year's 'Visceral Minds 2' including 'Dark Matter' with Planet Mu's Jlin, while Sinjin has collaborated with DJ Rashad, Just Blaze and MikeQ, and also produced music for monoliths like Kanye West and Frank Ocean. Remarkably, given the breadth of their work, 'Vicious Circles' is their first collaborative EP, and the first time either have released a vinyl record too.

The EP is a great showcase for the duo's emotional, maximalist chimeras of abstract pounding beats. From the punchy, circular, grandiose build-ups of opener 'Vicious Circles', to the unyielding melancholy of 'God' with its sinister Bulgarian choir sample against a peak Timbaland-era rhythm, the record's potent synths and manipulated vocals are both simultaneously fierce and friendly.

'Source of Conflict' is a poised dance between pulsing ambient textures and drilling beats, while 'Lurk 101' pits a volley of abstracted juke toms up against a hammering drumline. 'BabyboySosa' feels like drum-less drill, manipulating vocals into strange alien shapes over a bassline before spiraling toms and hi-hats start to form a forceful march.

The EP concludes on the love anthem 'And You Were One' with a chipmunked vocal running through its wonky chorus of bent notes and chords.

Infinite Music 'A Tribute To La Monte Young'

    £11.99

Limited Magenta colour vinyl LP, download card included.

Infinite Music is an entrancing drone experience. A breathtaking live collaboration between Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom, Zombie Zombie's Etienne Jaumet and Celine Wadier, a master of Indian Dhrupad singing and tanpura.

Recorded live at Teatro Maria Matos, Lisbon in September 2017, the performance is released on magenta vinyl.

Young was an inspiration on John Cale and original Velvet Underground drummer Angus MacLise, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, George Harrison, Brian Eno, Jarvis Cocker, Stereolab and the classic Spacemen 3 album Dreamweapon.

La Monte's influence in the hands of this eclectic trio is timeless and beautifully evocative.

The third album from Scottish post-hardcore trio Carson Wells, out 15 June 2018 via Barely Regal Records and Black Lake Records in the UK, as well as European labels Adagio830 and Discos Finu, in Berlin and Madrid respectively. It will be available on 12' vinyl and as a digital download. All artwork was created by Andy Hemming.

From their roots in mathy screamo, to their intricate and brooding sophomore LP, Tread A Northern Path, Carson Wells has evolved considerably during their near decade as a band. No Relic continues to push their music in new directions, as arguably their most surprising release to date. At 6-songs, certain authorities might consider it too short for the long-play'tag, yet, at thirty minutes it outruns their debut album, the nine track Wonderkid'.

The sprawling compositions on No Relic'stand as a testament to the expanded horizons of the trio's songwriting - switching effortlessly from blistering, scrappy sections that hark back to the band's early output, to expansive, hypnotic passages.credits

  • Amateur Childbirth 'Your Afterlife Is Cancelled' Vinyl LP

    Blackest Ever Black

Amateur Childbirth 'Your Afterlife Is Cancelled' Vinyl LP

    £16.99

This is Amateur Childbirth's Christian Rock album. The previous LP from Ivan Matthew David's solo project, 2015's Pripyat, concerned itself with the blighted belief systems of UFO worshippers, Your Afterlife Is Cancelled expands this compelling solo project's field of enquiry to look at a wider array of 'religious anomalies' - cults, for want of a better word.

Each song is about a different such anomaly. To call Hicks'vision apocalyptic would be to underplay its cruelty. The Bible's rampant sadism pales in comparison. This is a world where faith - in a god or gods, in astrology, morality, or any meaning whatsoever - is merely a prelude to punishment. His lyrics are vivid glossaries of pain, abjection and indignity; the songs'protagonists swim in blood, piss, shit and ejaculate.

Eschatology and scatology are indivisible here. Drugs are rampantly abused, albeit to little benefit. There are scalpel-flashes of humour in David's wordplay, rhyming and dour Brisbane diction - but this offers scant consolation for the songs'embattled subjects, who wait, in vein, for salvation, while crows peck out their eyes, blood pours from their ears, and psoriasis ravages their skin.

These words, for all their pessimism and body-horror, are cradled in minimalist, folk-rock arrangements that are quite dazzling in their beauty and grievously earned simplicity: Hicks'monochord strum embellished with subtle violin, synthesizer and percussion shading.

Amateur Childbirth's caustic end-times worldview inevitably prompts comparisons with Current 93, but also a wider (non-)tradition of caustic and disturbed loner psych that includes Simon Finn, Patrik Fitzgerald, Robyn Hitchcock, Peter Jefferies and Roy Harper.

Your Afterlife Is Cancelled is a depressive tour de force from one of the most crushingly eloquent voices in the Australian underground.

  • Father Murphy 'A Requiem For Father Murphy' Vinyl 2xLP

    Avant! Records

Father Murphy 'A Requiem For Father Murphy' Vinyl 2xLP

    £25.49

A Requiem For Father Murphy is the latest and final offering from the iconic Italian occult duo, Father Murphy. Composed in the classical Requiem format, Rising follows the "Trilogy of the Cross", a series of records that recounts the journey of the fictional character Father Murphy, and subsequently the band itself.

The album was mixed and mastered by long-time collaborator Gregory Saunier (Deerhoof), who is instrumental in helping craft Father Murphy's sonic descent over the years.

With Rising, the legend of Father Murphy reaches its culmination. Having gone from religious fanatic, to heretic priest, and ultimately concealing to his final fate on the cross, Rising is the moment Father Murphy finally meets his death. Taking the form of a requiem, Rising will be the final album from Father Murphy.

It brings an end to a journey into faith; one longing for salvation and embracing failure. Across the Italian occult duo's 2015 Trilogy of the Cross'(the Calvary cassingle, Croce LP, and Lamentations EP) Father Murphy's sound reached down into grave new depths, more inspired than ever by music from their Catholic heritage. They've long been integrating a wider variety of field recordings, empty space, drones, and sonic processes alongside their core elements of pounding percussion, ecclesiastical organs, gnarled guitars, and ritualistic chanting.

Again working with longtime mixer/masterer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Rising takes the group's music into new territory. The format of a requiem mass for the dead'in this case for the late Father Murphy himself'brings with it all manner of traditional structural codes, musical reprises, and lyrical rhyming schemes.

Certain moments see the music adhere far more closely to requia traditions, including the grander sounds of timpani or trombone, and following the metres and rhyme schemes borrowed from traditional texts.

The words themselves have all been rewritten for Father Murphy's requiem however, disengaging from their standardized religious message. The lyrics across Rising are far longer and more complex than the shorter chants and verse that made up previous albums, while the variety and sheer detail of sounds used by the duo has never before been wider or more daring.

With Rising: A Requiem for Father Murphy, the project reaches its zenith.

Separated by 7000 miles, Routine Death is the husband and wife duo of Lisa (Gothenburg) and Dustin Zozaya (Austin), the latter also playing in Fuzz Club favourites Holy Wave.

The duo will be releasing their debut album, Parallel Universes in June, offering the perfect introduction to the dark, lo-fi pop world - channelling an ethereal darkwave sound with bewitching lo-fi vocals and the glitchy electronics of Broadcast, or even Stereolab.

Born out of this distance is a certain kind of intimacy, the use of cheap equipment and a creative process that involves constantly sending tracks forwards and backwards over the internet results in a minimalist noise-pop sound that shuns the overbearing sonic-excess that most new shoegaze bands fall victim to, instead stripping things down to the absolute fundamentals.

Lisa's sublimely entrancing vocals float over repetitive midi drumbeats (made using an app on Dustin's phone), glitched-out loops, droning organs and fuzzy lo-fi guitars.

RF Shannon 'Trickster Blues' Vinyl LP - 180g Coloured

    £18.99

    Available on 180gm coloured vinyl.

RF Shannon takes a drastic shift from the long form, pensive desert meditations of their previous record. 'The process was a drastic shift from the one we took with Jaguar Palace'and I was hooked. It was a blast all of the time.

We kept a quick pace due to external circumstances via random or otherwise inevitable interruptions, so we learned to take what we could get. If a take was good, it was a keeper, we didn't second guess it. In just four days we had demoed the majority of my new material and it just felt so right.''explains Shane Renfro, the mind behind RF Shannon.

The final product of the seize the moment approach behind the writing and recording process echoes the themes Trickster Blues attempts to dissect. 'The lyrics are about acknowledging consequences and saying "so what", the reward is worth the risk, etc. It's about feeling a pull, a calling, and dedicating to it hell or high water, whatever that may be. Its the heart of it all.''Renfro continues. To be able to listen and say 'That's it, that's the song. It is what it is, and we like what it is' Sounds a little underwhelming in that sense, but that's what I wanted. I just wanted the songs to speak for themselves. Our old material is challenging and dense, and I love it. I love the spaces we have created. But I wanted to record songs that could just stand alone and be what they are.''

    Planet Mu Records

RP Boo 'I'll Tell You What!'

    £11.99

While notorious in the Chicago streets, RP Boo's music had been unfairly confined to a few white labels and self-released mixtapes until his two archival Planet Mu LPs Legacy and Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints introduced broader audiences to his sonic history, some of it fifteen years after it was first recorded.

I'll Tell You What! is the next step in his mission, and the first time he's released an album of contemporary material. The title, a favorite maxim of his, welcomes listeners to sit down and let him narrate in the unforgettable abstract fashion he's known for. He explores familiar motifs such as the cosmos, movement, and opposition, using densely interwoven vocals, unpredictable percussion, and evil humming bass as his tools of choice.

RP Boo's music doesn't follow the traditional rules that most compositions do. Layering decades of samples from yesteryear to the present over his commanding vocal cut-ups, he transports the listener to their own realm of the space-time continuum.

The main difference between this record and his prior work is now we hear Boo tell new stories about preaching his gospel outside of Chicago, from his experiences frantically touring the globe over the last five years. The words 'things ain't been the same / since I hopped the plane' are repeated on top of engine sounds and rumbling bass on Flight 1235, a glorious paean to his new jet-setting adventures.

The spirit of competition runs through RP's veins as much as blood does, something you can't unlearn when you've been making music for Chicago's footwork circuit as long as he has. The local culture has served as a shelter from the violence that has plagued the city, pitting kids against each other with their feet rather than weapons. On At War Boo reminds us 'we are at war in the streets', a double meaning to both the mayhem in this world and the sweetness of rivalry on the dance floor.

Another battle-themed track Cloudy Back Yard, one of the spacier moments on this album, is an abstract on the state of footwork's home. Chicago remains the backyard of this artform even though it's left the porch and traveled to new neighborhoods worldwide.

Back at home though, competition among the DJs and dancers continues, and as the man himself says, 'with all this hate, there's smoke, and it's cloudy'. I'll Tell You What! throws more than a few curveballs into the mix.

Footwork has always borrowed from hip-hop, and many vocal tracks are almost condensed raps, dating back to the street chants pioneered on Dance Mania Records in the ghetto house days. On Bounty, Boo grabs the mic and brazenly lays down a full-on verse of terror over a thick atmosphere of his signature sweltering low-end and erratic Roland R-70 patterns.

While he's most famous for his confrontational battle anthems, his melancholy moments are just as powerful. You get the best of both of those worlds on U-Don't No, with soulful samples finishing his own cocky sentences, one of the most elegant tracks RP has made to date.

Deep Sole closes the record out, with the words 'It's always beautiful at the end' looping over waves of hypnotic synthesis, confidently looking death straight in the eyes.

Semiotics Department Of Heteronyms is on black vinyl LP limited to 250. SDH (Semiotics Department of Heteronyms) is the new project of two key figures of the synth-wave/industrial scene of Barcelona. Andrea P. Latorre and Sergi Algiz, founders of the Cønjuntø Vacíø label and also in the post-punk band Wind Atlas, unveil a new act more oriented towards pop music.

SDH is change, alteration, distortion, metamorphosis. Their synth-pop songs, sprinkled with EBM and techno, are mysterious, obtuse and suggestive. After their debut digital EP Tell Them from last March, here comes the self-titled first full-length album.

Eight tracks driven by sinuous synth lines, steady beats and Andrea'sensual, nocturnal vocals at times reminding of the late Dolores O'Riordan, give the record one overall lush, velvety feeling. Like a dive at the heart of the Spanish night, but nowhere near any movida. Instead an isolated, sombre yet erotic one, like two long-time lovers walking home in the early morning hours.

50 minutes of new, original music from David Holmes soundtracking Steven Soderbergh's six part tale of passion, intrigue and deception.

Initially released as an interactive app in which the viewer directed the narrative - Mosaic is a six-part HBO series conceived and directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Sharon Stone. Mosaic is a twisting tale of passion, intrigue and deception focusing on the disappearance of a high-profile resident of picturesque Summit, Utah and the four-year effort by law- enforcement and civilians to discover the truth behind the crime.

With that in mind, Mosaic's original soundtrack weaves as intriguing a tale. Recorded between Belfast and Los Angeles by Holmes, the album features a modern-day Wrecking Crew of musicians. Echoes of Maestro Morricone abound alongside the influence of avant-garde pioneers and Holmes' current soundtrack contemporaries in a selection of deep listening tracks.

To quote Mark Kermode, 'Mosaic' outlines Holmes'expertise at 'ratcheting up the tension' with strings, horns and synthesizers swelling throughout. As this tension peaks there is inevitable release - in rhythmic and harmonic tracks such as What I Want Is The Red Room'and Badalamenti-esque lounge eeriness in the likes of Four Years Later'- guiding the 20 cues presented on this release into a cohesive, full and nuanced album that reveals subtle and rewarding intricacies on each repeated listen. Fuzz, fuzz, fuzz, doom, stoner, more fuzz.

Welcome to the world of Blacklab.

Blacklab describe themselves as the Dark Witch Doom Duo from Osaka Japan'.

However, when it comes to witches, they are more the spectral Sadako from The Ring'than campy Countess Dracula'. Chilling cool with built in overdrive.

A full frontal assault of distorted riffs, howls and ghostly vocals, as well as bags of riot girrl attitude and lo-fi bravado.

Being nominally a Doom'band, expect a bucket load of Sabbath worship for sure, but Blacklab have a vibe and experimental undertow akin more to their countrymen Boris'and the souped up lo-fi fuzz of Ty Segall or Comets On Fire.

Tracks like Black Moon'Hidden Garden'Spoon'Symptom Of The Blacklab'(which starts like Sabbath - ¦ then thrashes somewhere else), twist, burn and boil into the red. His Name Is - ¦'is a churning chunky throb. Spoon'and Warm Death'offer moments of relief and crushing noise.

And Big Muff'is - ¦ well - ¦ 9 minutes of drum-less fuzz, that will probably do serious damage to your speakers.

    What's not to love.

Blacklab are: Yuko Morino, guitar and vocals. Chia Shiraishi, drums.

Four years on from Lay Llamas'Rocket Recordings debut Østro, this Italian-based astral-voyaging collective, led by Nicola Giunta - have manifested a revelatory official follow-up in the form of Thuban - a travelogue powered by a pan-global fascination with rhythmic hypnosis and an unquenchable experimental mindset.

Dwelling in the night sky of the Northern hemisphere, Thuban was the star closest to the North pole from the fourth to the second millennium BC. For Giunta. this mysterious stellar icon offers pause for thought. 'A polar star is something that drives the travellers towards a safe place. But in the age we're living now it seems hard to recognise a polar star.'

Indeed, his mission has been as much one of discovery for himself and listener alike 'Everything around us is transforming, always! You know, I'm not a proper songwriter, I consider myself a sound crafter. An experimental alchemist of sounds and visions' True to form, Thuban maps out terrain in which collaborators from Clinic and Goat contribute to the air of earthy vibrancy and fertile exploration.

Moreover, Mark Stewart of The Pop Group's spoken-word contributions to the searing Fight Fire With Fire'(styled by Nicola as dystopian afrobeat') steers the album to new pinnacles of intensity informed by science fiction yet with explicitly political force 'Thuban talks about ancient sea travels, ancient cultures, ancient rites, but also about today's travellers, travellers from all ages' Nicola surmises 'Travellers that are still looking for their Thuban, for their polar star to reach a safe place to live with their family.'
