    The Shacks 'Haze'

    £11.99

CD Features A Second Bonus disc with The Shacks Self-Titled EP, Selections Previously Issued Only On 7' Vinyl And Complete Instrumentals From 'Haze'.

Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming one of the year's big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, Haze,'solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz.

When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistry lies at the heart of Haze,'a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band's debut.

Produced together by Shrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who's played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, and countless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager's basement and Michels'Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed 'the Shangri La of Soul.'

Haze'opens with the title track, which is, appropriately enough, the first song Shrager and Wise ever wrote together. It's a spare, smoky tune that shimmers and sparkles as it shifts in and out of focus, and it's an ideal gateway into the immersive world of The Shacks. On the breezy 'Follow Me,' they channel the infectious charm of a 60's girl group, while the soulful 'My Name Is' grooves its way through a mesmerizing take on 70's funk.

Much like a dream, the songs often merge the familiar and the unfamiliar, constructing their own psychedelic reality full of beauty and yearning, all fueled by Wise's breathy vocals and the unmistakable electricity of a wildly creative band truly inhabiting their music.

'Birds' makes brilliant use of Daptone drum hero Homer Steinwess's impeccable feel behind the kit, while the 50's ballad-meets-baroque pop of 'Cryin'' tips its cap to Roy Orbison and John Lennon as Shrager takes over lead vocals, and the soulful shuffle of 'Texas' belies a dark and violent undercurrent ripped from the headlines.

Through it all permeates an unshakable sense that this is a group performing just for you. 'Nobody' finds the Shacks re-interpreting Phil Spector's Wagnerian approach to rock & roll, complete with sweeping strings and darkly innocent lyrics.

The 13 songs featured on Haze plays out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty. In the short time that they've been together, The Shacks have already made an impressive mark.

Their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies''This Strange Effect' soundtracked a global iPhone commercial, one which actually stars Wise herself, and their self-titled EP earned the band dates with St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Chicano Batman, and their Big Crown Records labelmates Lee Fields & The Expressions.

In 2015 Jaala released their debut album Hard Hold'to critical acclaim both nationally and internationally. We could sit here talking about Pitchfork's glowing review or how Triple J featured the album but all that is in the past and Jaala are in the now. Google is available if you are curious about these achievements. Since the release of Hard Hold'they have transformed into a completely new animal, stylistically and literally.

The addition of Carolyn Schofield (synth) of Fia Fiell fame has moved the band towards a more haunting, dreamy experimental pop movement as opposed to the guitar shredding melt your face prog rock vibes of yesteryear.

Vocalist/guitarist Cosima pay and drummer/genius Maria Moles stand firm with their intricately woven telepathy. The ornate and ever flowing creativity is still ubiquitous, only it feels different now, rather than falling down a beautiful waterfall into a pit of demons that become your mates it's more like your feet have been confiscated at the same time as you've been given the ability to fly.

'Near-religious drone. The effect is kaleidoscopic.' The Quietus

'Recalls the time-lapse of an epic nature documentary ... Such intention, such mindfulness, such clarity of vision.' The Observer

A twelve-faceted so nic inquiry into celestial cycles and the illuminating nature of darkness, Bellowing Sun is the majestic culmination of composer, harmoniumist, and synthesist Jaime Fennelly's immersive explorations of the natural world's sensory dimensions and the dialogues between musical traditions'acoustic and electronic, vernacular and avant-garde.

Commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago for its world premiere performance, and recorded and mixed by Fennelly with John McEntire (Tortoise), it features Janet Beveridge Bean (Freakwater), Jim Becker (Iron and Wine), and Jon Mueller (Death Blues).

A twelve-faceted sonic inquiry into celestial cycles, the rhythms of the natural world, and the illuminating nature of darkness, the accompanying album Bellowing Sun is the majestic culmination of Fennelly's immersive explorations of the natural world's sensory dimensions and the dialogues between musical traditions'acoustic and electronic, vernacular and avant-garde.

The solitary compositional genesis of the piece, and a significant portion of its early recording (before tracking and mixing sessions with John McEntire of Tortoise), occurred at Bean's home atop a dune of fine quartz 'singing sands' on the shore of Lake Michigan. Sonically, Bellowing Sun is both kaleidoscopic and telescopic in nature, offering a radiant palette of rhythmic, textural, and tonal complexity, as well as rapid shifts in scale, from the intimately corporeal to the dizzyingly cosmic.

All four J's'Jaime, Janet, Jim, and Jon'appeared together on Undying Color, but have since solidified into a formidable, cohesive unit, a true band capable of increasingly expansive arrangements. Though divided into twelve movements, or aspects'zodiacal sectors, perhaps'the piece functions as a heroic, integral whole.

The album's sequence reveals a dynamic push and pull between contemplative stasis and headlong momentum, imparting a palpably physical mass to the cataracts of sound. Bean sings on half of the tracks, including early stunner 'Matchstick Grip' and the spectacular closer 'Pause to Wonder.' Whether articulating words or intoning phonemes, her powerful, lucent voice elevates the proceedings to a devotional plane whenever it emerges from the saturated field of sound.

    Awesome Tapes From Africa

    Hailu Mergia 'Lala Belu'

    £11.99

First new LP in over 15 years. Builds on 3 successful ATFA reissues of Mergia's music. Legendary artist still active after decades of historic work. Modern Ethiopian jazz built on ancient scales and standards. Capping several successful years traveling the world performing to audiences big and small, Hailu Mergia's Lala Belu has been a long time coming.

It builds on Mergia's remarkable career resurgence over the past few years. Beginning in 2013 with the reissue of his dreamy Hailu Mergia and His Classical Instrument followed by the enormous success of his seminal Ethio-jazz masterpiece Tche Belew and continuing with last year's widely acclaimed Wede Harer Guzo, Mergia has received considerable accolades from listeners and press globally, including The New York Times, Pitchfork and The Wire.

His old recordings are cherished revelations for Ethiopian music fans; however, Mergia's return to the stage has been just as inspiring and electrifying. Mergia's vintage recordings are known for an inherently mysterious and worn-in quality, while his new recordings echo his band's 21st century live show with modern instrumental interpretations of crucial Ethiopian standards and Mergia's own original compositions. Tony Buck (drums) and Mike Majkowski (bass), who have backed Mergia on tour throughout Europe and Australia, form the bass-drums trio on the recording.

Having played venues from Radio City Music Hall and the Kennedy Center to jazz festivals, rock clubs and DIY spaces all over North America, Europe and Australia, Mergia and Awesome Tapes From Africa want to document this moment in his landmark career with a snapshot of Mergia's current sound.

Since he emigrated from Ethiopia and built a life in Washington, D.C. around 1981'where he remains working as an airport taxi driver when he is not on tour'Mergia's career has followed a humble trajectory. He made a few recordings in America but they didn't easily reach fans back home. He kept making music on his own and with friends but after the early 80's his gigs in the U.S. mostly dried up.

It wasn't until he began working with Awesome Tapes From Africa and putting together bands with the help of booking agents and musicians in Europe and the U.S., that he was able to chart a new path. With a broad audience of young listeners in diverse venues and distant locales, at age 71, Mergia is enjoying his comeback and is not slowing down.

  • Bert Jansch 'A Man I

    Fire Records

Bert Jansch 'A Man I"d Rather Be (Part 2)'

    £32.99

    Limited edition 4LP/4CD case-bound 24 page book-back box set.

A Man I'd Rather Be' (Part II) comprises Jansch's late '60s and early '70s output, an under-rated era, no doubt influenced by the now well-established Pentangle sound. Bandmates Danny Thompson (bass) and Terry Cox (drums) regularly feature among the musicians as well as cameo appearances by Mary Hopkin, Toni Visconti and Dave Mattacks.

In this period we see Jansch's take on pop (Nicola), blues (Birthday Blues funnily enough), handsome arrangements (Rosemary Lane) and barque folk (Moonshine). All of this being conjured during a time when Pentangle was simultaneously releasing albums and constantly touring; to say that the man had a generous talent is something of an understatement.? The lush orchestration of Nicola was partly recorded by John Wood who would later engineer Nick Drake's recordings at the same studio.

The heart melting cover of Birthday Blues contains a set with some of the stalwarts of Bert's solo and Pentangle sets, Poison'and A Woman Like You'and some of his most arresting work including Come Sing a Happy Song'which featured on the soundtrack of Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale in 2005.

Rosemary Lane is considered by many to be one of Bert's finest records, a smooth mix of traditional folk such as the title track and Reynardine', timeless original compositions like Tell Me What Is True Love?'and in Alman'and Sarabanda', examples of early music including the 16th and 17th/18th centuries, all with the sympathetic production of Bill Leader.

Moonshine, Bert's first release after Pentangle split, It was produced by fellow member Danny Thompson and the legendary Tony Visconti, who not only arranged a number of songs but also played on the record. It also features Mary Hopkin duetting with Bert on Ewan MacColl's The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', Aly Bain and Charles Mingus'drummer Charlie Richmon.

"Simply, I think Bert was a truly unique musician. Somehow he could elegantly bridge differing musical and singing traditions to sing and play in a way that sounded only like Bert Jansch.' - Anne Briggs

'The Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar' - Neil Young

"At one point, I was absolutely obsessed with Bert Jansch. When I first heard that LP, I couldn't believe it. It was so far ahead of what everyone else was doing. No one in America could touch that.' - Jimmy Page

Debut album by MIEN, the exciting new four piece band comprised of The Black Angels'Alex Maas, The Horrors'Tom Furse, Elephant Stone's Rishi Dhir and The Earlies'John-Mark Lapham.

The seeds were sown for this collaboration as long ago as 2004, when Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone) found himself in a chance encounter with Black Angels frontman Alex Maas whilst performing sitar with his former band on a bill at SXSW in Austin with The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Not long afterwards, he would also stumble across electronics guru and producer John Mark Lapham from Anglo-American band The Earlies, via a shared love for one song - the classic sitar banger'by The Association, Wantin'Ain't Gettin'. Some years later, another piece of the puzzle came into place, when Dhir was now playing bass with The Black Angels in 2012, and found the band sharing several bills with The Horrors.

Thus he made the acquaintance of Tom Furse, and yet another pact was made to work together. Several traversals of the globe by both plane and audio-file later, the result is an album that sees this quartet transcending their origins whilst maintaining a cohesive unity borne of a desire for outward exploration.

John Mark's vision, as he puts it, was 'imagine the Black Angels as Nico in her 80's industrial phase mixed with George Harrison and Conny Plank.' - true to form, it's an album that finds equal room for radiant groove-based propulsion and ambient dreamscapes alike - as comfortable with the murky hallucinogenic voyage of You Dreamt'as the powerful widescreen sweep of (I'm Tired Of) Western Shouting', yet with songwriting acumen as potent as the production values are expansive and exploratory.

This may have been a record put together at a distance - yet the chemistry between these four figures is manifest amidst a kaleidoscopic series of atmospheres and excursions whereby the fertile songwriting of the golden age of 60s psychedelia is transmitted into a transcendental realm above and beyond the second decade of the 21st century.

MIEN are: Alex Maas (vocals, samples, loops), Tom Furse (keyboards, programming), Rishi Dhir (bass, sitar, keyboards) and John-Mark Lapham (keyboards, samples, programming).

    Mushapata 'Saba-Saba Fighting' Vinyl LP

    £15.49

    Limited edition!

'Saba-Saba Fighting' or fighting for peace, is the message that Mushapata, a legend of the African reggae underground scene in Paris with an extraordinary destiny, has fought for all his life.

Born in Bukavu, a city nowadays located in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the border with Burundi, Mushapata arrived in France at the end of the 1970s to pursue his career as a boxer. A few years later, revolted by the professional sports industry, he became a personal protection agent on the advice of his manager.

He escorted many celebrities among whom Bob Marley during his legendary French tour of 1980. This encounter awakened the musician hidden behind the boxing champion. Mushapata had stepped out of the ring but he kept fighting with music, lyrics and his band Saba-Saba Fighting.

Ignored by the record labels of the time, his first self-produced recordings reveal a rough mix of lo-fi reggae, afrobeat rhythms accompanied by a brass section close to Free jazz. The nonchalant sounding voices of Mushapata and Tshayi complete this explosive cocktail and carry, in Swahili language, the Pan-African ideas of Lumumba and other great figures of African-American struggles.

This maxi single, conceived as a mini-compilation tribute, includes 4 titles from the first two albums recorded between 1980 and 1984.

An appetite for the unknown" - Daniel Lanois

No collaboration is unlikely when the end goals are the same. A meeting of two artists who illustrate different corners of the musical landscape, come together to create a new statement that takes their collective strengths to higher elevations and encompasses new terrains.

So it is on the first collaborative journey of Canadian musicians Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois. What started as mutual respect for one another's work, led to several years of a creative germination resulting in an eight-track full-length exploration released May 4th on Timesig/Planet Mu.

The path began in 2014, after Lanois reached out to Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk) as a fan of his work. The project started to take root in Summer of 2016, after Funk hung around Toronto between shows. Taking his gear to Lanois'studio, the two began to play for the first time together in what would prove to be a formative moment in their creative journey together.

'I love making music with Dan, he has a real understanding of how to create a world and build what may exist within that world. Bassdrums are trombones and they are a colossal whale which floats on clouds of leaves speaking to the blast furnace feeding the mammoth. A small painting of forest horses hangs in the cranium of the sea horse.' - Aaron Funk

Recorded live in a former Buddhist temple-turned-studio in Toronto,
'Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois' travels to new zones in what Lanois describes as 'a body of work driven by exploration'. Like all the best collaborations, it's brought something new out of both musicians. Equipped with their production acuity, they let their natural workflow guide them through uncharted waters. Funk laid the groundwork with drums while Lanois rode the pedal steel, weaving their sounds together in a new sonic tapestry. The two ultimately landed at their destination, their work ready to be shared with those willing to explore.

    In Daniel Lanois 'own words:
"To come upon a new form reassures the head that frontier lives on The unlikely pairing of Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois may very well have provided us with a nice new pair of shoes to walk to new sonic frontier A melange of gospel and electronics As madness of the world trips over its heels these Canadian sonic innovators prepare for travel A body of work driven by exploration, brings to us in our modern times what we remember and admire from the Jazz explorations of the 50s A splintering An appetite for the unknown"

Challenge Me Foolish' is an almost lost album of µ-Ziq material circa 1998-99, an era that saw Mike Paradinas release Royal Astronomy'on the now defunct Virgin subsidiary Hut records, and also tour with Björk.

It's an era of his music that's definitely worth re-exploring, in which Mike went against the grain by producing music that was baroque, melodic and whimsical, while the IDM movement he was lumped with made instrumental music that was often neurotic and complicated. His taste for melody and dreamy beauty above roughness and intricacy confused people who were hanging on too tightly to the rules. He even brought in Japanese vocalist Kazumi, adding an extra human touch.

Challenge Me Foolish' is something of a companion to the Royal Astronomy record; arguably even better given the fresh ears selecting the material. It's imbued with a confident sense of pastoral colour, and a gentle optimism, utilising bells, studied orchestral arrangements and airy synthesisers that sit the album somewhere between, Jean Jacques Perrey (the French electronic composer whose whimsy was always balanced with serious innovation and chops) and the colourful, optimistic soundtracks of Joe Hisaishi. There's a strange sense of the old and new throughout, the sentimental and utopia, with nary a hint of darkness. Even when the album dips into the hyperkinetic rhythms of jungle, the melodies and mood still retain a sense of gentle warmth. Dive into peak time Paradinas.

Oneida has been a cornerstone of the Brooklyn underground for nearly two decades. Always evolving, the group has been a beacon of musical exploration and enthralling unpredictability, gaining legendary status among heads that know and expanding the limits of what it means to be a rock band.

With a discography spanning over a dozen full-lengths, plus live releases, EPs, singles, and limited one-offs, Oneida has demonstrated a mastery of collective improvisation, off-kilter songwriting, complex composition, and everything in between. In 2011 Oneida lost its home base, its studio dubbed the Ocropolis in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, due to the pervasive gentrification and over-development of the neighbourhood that was once a thriving arts community.

After watching the Monster Island building that housed the Ocropolis transform into a pile of rubble, the band began an intense period of exploration and discovery, retreating from the studio in favor of the stage, and birthing a panoply of limited, uncompromising releases that documented the band's continuously unfolding journey.

Six years after the release of A List of the Burning Mountains, the final emission from the Ocropolis, the band will release their newest studio creation Romance, their first album for Joyful Noise Recordings and a record marked by wild eclecticism, even for a group known for its shape-shifting nature.

Recorded over several years in various locales, the 11 songs on Romance are built around deeply developed long-arc rhythm/phase concepts, noise, yearning, blind guitar rage, longing, the lurch of dying electronics, and a multi-modal embrace of human fallibility and artifice.

From the crackling synth-led opener 'Economy Travel' to the expansive 18-minute epic 'Shepherd's Axe,' Romance is an album in constant flux. On 'Bad Habit' the band employs phasing between organ and guitar to great, disorienting effect, while the primitive riffs of 'Cockfight' offer a contrasting vision of rock minimalism. Listen closely on 'Lay of the Land' and you will hear constant rhythmic development, with drummer Kid Millions eschewing repetition in favor of morphing patterns of hi-hat and snare. As with all mystery, Romance reveals more through closer attention and multiple listens.

Oneida, always formidable in the live environment, will be touring throughout the year. Kid Millions remains one of the most in-demand drummers in New York, exploring the outer reaches of percussion music with his own Man Forever project, as well as playing with Laurie Anderson, Royal Trux, and People of the North with Oneida compatriot Bobby Matador.

Bobby also takes part in the psych-pop duo Nurse & Soldier, and recently formed yet another duo called New Pope. Guitarist Shahin Moita is a co-founder of underground stalwarts Ex Models and Knyfe Hyts.

Through it all Oneida remains a powerful collective voice, a propulsive force for wildness and excitement, with Romance heralding the return of the epic, artful ballad version of the journey.

Trou Aux Rats 'Amour & Sepulcre' Vinyl LP

    £21.99

Debut LP by the new creepy and romantic basement organ project of Romain Perrot (VOMIR, FREE AS DEAD, FALOT, RORO PERROT).

'The other night I dreamt about a parallel universe in which Klaus Schulze had some sort of government-paid job installing contact mics and analog synths (which I suspect was mainly to annoy Tangerine Dream) in all the big European cathedrals to "modernize" the pipe organs.

I told him how they used to make cobwebs in the early Dracula movies; you punch a small hole in a yogurt pot full of liquid latex attached to an electric drill, point roughly where you want the cobwebs to go, shut your eyes and hit the trigger. This got ol' Klaus drooling, and pretty soon every church (not to mention cemetery) ceiling in France was dripping with stringy latex goo.

He also decided to add more gargoyles (inside, on the altar) and impose a black metal warpaint dress code for Sunday mass. Roro worked part-time as the Hunchback (every church had their own, so as well as Notre Dame there was The Hunchback of The Sistine Chapel, The Hunchback of Unarius, and even, controversially, The Hunchback of Scientology) and also hung out in front of Pere Lachaise trying to get people to sign a petition to change the name of the cemetery to "The Dario Argento Museum".

Reclusiveness aside, Romain and I sometimes like to meet up near Notre Dame at a Japanese restaurant run by one of the members of Les Legions Noire, serving "necro-sushi" and so on... One sunny afternoon, sighing as he removed the fake Quasimodo teeth and the cushion stuffed into the back of his shirt, he handed me the new Trou Au Rats LP, cursing the backache which was the result of his job. "Give this to Klaus" he said, in a deep voice a few octaves lower than usual.

Now, dear reader, let me assure you, I don't know and I don't want to know what kind of entities he'd done deals with in his basement catacomb, but a few days after Klaus heard that album, Roro got to lay down his hunch for the last time, and scored his dream job as full-time organist. Mind you, dream job or not, he does still have to wear the plastic vampire fangs, somehow managing to remain the perfect gentleman, even if they do make him talk funny.

Now, if you are aware of his other projects (Vomir being one), chez Roro there's no such thing as a coincidence, and there's always a lot more going on that meets the eye...

That might explain why, shortly after his promotion to organist, as if by majic(k), weird record shops called things like "Bimbo Tower 2" started opening up all over Europe in the tiny streets round the backs of cathedrals or near to old cemeteries (and even inside pyramids, or so I was told), right next to where the crazy old witches sell gory upside-down crucifixion dioramas and Free As Dead t-shirts in the most happenin' European cities. Which must be why you are reading this right now' Andy Bolus (Evil Moisture, Royal Sperm) Paris January 2018

Portugal's dreamweapon take their name from the 1990 Spacemen 3 live album Dreamweapon: An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music', who themselves took inspiration from the work of minimalist drone - or Dream Music'- visionary La Monte Young and a 1965 multimedia piece titled Rites of The Dreamweapon'by original The Velvet Underground drummer Angus MacLise. Fast-forward to 2018 and dreamweapon, the band, are continuing to keep the torch burning.

Made up of 10,000 Russos bassist Andre Couto, João Campos Costa and Edgar Moreira, dreamweapon emerged in 2009 and have since gone on to release one EP, their debut S/T album and a handful of singles, whilst taking their immersive and unremitting live show around Europe.

Made up of four improvised compositions recorded in one take at their Porto practice space, on February 16th dreamweapon will be releasing their sophomore LP SOL'.

On the album, whirrs of feedback and noise coalesce around droning, oscillating synths, samples and subtle cascading guitars, the only thing keeping the sparse soundscapes together being the incessant Krautrock rhythm with a seemingly endless motorik bassline that forces it's way right to the back of your unconscious and the almost proto-punk minimalism of those programmed drum machines.

LP comes with a Download Code for the whole 90+ min concert.

For a self confessed journeyman'musician who has spent most of his 50 year career on the road live Michael Chapman albums are curiously rare items and even more rare from his earlier years.

This one, recorded by dutch 'hippie' radio station VPRO'on 6th May 1971 is the earliest known live recording so far discovered of Michael Chapman after he started releasing records on the legendary UK based Harvest / EMI record label in 1969.

This period is for Chapman fans the classic period, that more recently has drawn belated media coverage and recognition in response to the more recent kudos bestowed upon Michael from the likes of Thurston Moore, Kurt Vile, Jim O'rouke and the late, great, Jack Rose.

A beautiful clear, warm and intimate recording of Chapman duetting with long time collaborator Rick Kemp on electric bass and which documents material from all three albums in a free flowing improv inflected style very much in favour at the time.

It is with this free flowing vibe in mind that we include with both CD & vinyl editions the complete 90 minute concert via a download code card so listeners can experience the whole set. Chapman sounds in a confident, gentle and relaxed mood. The Audience Is Initially Tentative, Possibly Unfamilar With chapman's work but gradually warming to his complex dexterous not folk'playing.

The recordings make for a fascinating snapshot of the time, with a loose and open approach that offers a rare chance for guitar buffs to evesdrop between songs on some those bespoke Chapman guitar tunings!.

The set begins with another very rare Chapman item - a cover version - in this case of Tim Hardin's 1965 'A Reason To Believe'. A song which had just reappeared that year as the A side of a Rod Stewart solo single (The B side being Maggie May'!).

The Lovely Eggs 'This Is Eggland'

Northern psychedelic punks The Lovely Eggs return with a mind-melting new album. The Lovely Eggs are one of the most unique, innovative and genuine bands on the British Underground music scene. Heavier and more in-your-face than anything they've done previously, Holly Ross (guitar/vocals) and David Blackwell (drums) bring together a fierce DIY ethos, surreal sense of humour and kitchen-sink realism.

Working with a producer for the very first time, Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips) lends his magic dust to bring out the best of The Lovely Eggs'explosive blend of motoric krautrock, 60s psychedelia and punk rock attitude. They create their own world and invite us to join them in Eggland. The album title is a cheeky nod to Shane Meadows'series, This Is England. It is a comment on the current state of modern Britain.

The album is about being an outsider and doing things differently, eschewing society's conventions as they have done. Since having their son in 2013, the pair have taken him on tour with them, racing round the UK with 2 fingers up to conventional family life firmly out of the window.

They have also remained in their hometown of Lancaster, despite its cultural and geographical isolation. As Holly explains; 'On this album we're saying it's OK to live life differently, we're doing it and you can do it too! 'Living up here in Lancaster is kind of mad. It's a bit like the Twin Peaks of Great Britain.' The town has a rich history of the witchcraft, notoriously it was where the Pendle witches were hanged'.

For the first time ever, the pair worked with a producer on the new album, welcoming in legendary Grammy award winning engineer Dave Fridmann to their world. 'We received an email from Dave Fridmann. He had got our answerphone message, listened to our stuff and wanted to work with us. It was just totally bizarre!' The album was self-recorded at Lancaster Musician's Co-op and the Eggs'own house. Dave Fridmann then produced it remotely. They then went out to Dave's Studio in New York State, for mixing.

The result is a gratifyingly rich sounding record, which still retains the raw energy of the band's sound but harnesses a real power and dynamism. It's much heavier than anything they've done before. As Holly says: 'It's pretty relentless. It kind of sounds like a chip shop on fire. We still write about everyday life and the stuff that goes on in our world, it's just the new album is more fierce'.

The Lovely Eggs have been nudging towards a heavier sound with their previous album This Is Our Nowhere, which was praised by the NME, who called them; 'One of the country's most beloved underground bands.' Having formed in Paris in 2006, they named themselves after a pigeon laid two eggs on an abandoned nest on the windowsill. To celebrate their 10th anniversary last year, they reissued their first three albums on coloured vinyl. The band have built up a cult following, selling out gigs across the UK, as well as gaining support from 6 Music and Radio One.

This Is Eggland is a giant leap forward in their wild-ride of a career. The album is like listening in on The Lovely Eggs'own secret world, with philosophical songs about the mysteries of the universe ('Hello I Am Your Sun'), to abandoning ' the grass is always greener' mentality ('Wiggy Giggy'), to being on the wrong side of society or the music industry ('I'm With You') and several inspired by local witchcraft. Unashamed to be themselves and have fun while they're at it, The Lovely Eggs weave an intoxicatingly magnetic magic spell and we're helplessly and willingly falling under it.

    1. Hello I Am Your Sun
    2. Wiggy Giggy
    3. Dickhead
