Modern Kosmology sees Jane Weaver's melodic-protagonist channeling new depths of creative cosmic energy within.

After the huge critical acclaim of 2012's 'Fallen By Watchbird', followed by 2015's exploratory "Silver Globe" LP winning her unanimous "record of the year accolades" and hefty measures of radio play-listing Jane Weaver's conceptual trajectory has sent her neo-kosmische penchants to the point of no-return.

Jane Weaver's unwaning yearning for psychoactive pop energy has just reached a new level of magnetism. As snowclones go, Modern Kosmology is the new Silver. Another Spectrum to add to the tension.

Pumping their way out of the South Bronx of New York in the early 80s, this rhythm and dance-punk outfit made unforgettable funk that was also unusually rooted in post-punk.

    Laurel Halo 'Dust'

    £9.99

Laurel Halo returns to Hyperdub for her third LP with a fresh approach and a new sound. Routed out of the electronic abstraction of 2015's In Situ - but with clear reference to 2012's sleeper-hit Quarantine - Dust is an album revolving around loose and languid songs; warped, sun-filled, melted and at times, heavy-hearted and obscure.

Recorded over a period of two years, the writing process began at EMPAC in upstate New York in January 2015. With access to microphones, percussion, keys and a wide range of routings, Laurel spent days alone in the cavernous space, later inviting musicians Eli Keszler and Lafawndah to join her there.

Those sessions would eventually become this album: a collection of breezy, broken songs, based on woody instrumentation, sub bass and restless, intricate electronics. Earnest songwriting meets with modal cut-up strategies, improvisational playing with higrade digital dust. Tactile and fibrous throughout the record, the vocals and percussion coalesce and breathe life into each other. Swung grooves eddy and collapse; acoustic drums are warped into sensual, febrile melodies.

The lyrics are themselves bricolage, without a specific narrator or place in time. They slip in and out of view, something that is visualised in the album's inner panel. Extending the influence, the album opener Sun To Solar'is an adaptation of 'Servidão de Passagem' by Brazilian concrete poet Haroldo de Campos. In line with the album's sound, Dust is 'Laurel Halo' as a flexible cast of characters.

Filled with dialogue, the album helms an interchangeable ensemble of vocalists and musicians, featuring vocals from Klein, Lafawndah, and Michael Salu, as well as musicians such as Eli Keszler, Craig Clouse ($hit and $hine), Julia Holter, Max D, Michael Beharie and Diamond Terrifier.

Laurel's omnivorous influences play out in mutated fashion - coalesced, unfettered and inclusive - a broad musical palette free from entrenched modes, catalysed by digital production that could only happen in 2017.

Ask many self-styled music aficionados, and they'll tell you that rock in the early to mid 70s descended into a mire of boundless self-indulgence and instrumental virtuosity.

Not so in Sweden. For there, the egalitarian spirit that many thought revolutionary to punks in the UK was nothing new for the heads to be found enjoying the cult Swedish psychedelia of bands like Träd, Gräs och Stenar or Þlgarnas Trädgård. It's exactly this lineage forty plus years later where one can find Flowers Must Die, the six-piece Swedish outfit whose Kompost'- their full-length debut on Rocket Recordings, home of Goat and Josefin Ohrn + The Liberation - is a landmark moment for an outfit pursuing an improvisationbased approach removed from the codified realm of contemporary psych, and exploring uncanny and unhinged territory fuelled by diverse record collections yet unique to their own collective headspace.

The band may have taken their name originally from an Ash Ra Tempel song, whilst both the strains of Amon Düül II and the repetition of Can lurk within these overgrown sonic pathways. Yet Kompost'shows them honing their improvisatory excursions into coherent songcraft amidst spectral techno and cosmic disco shapes, as the angular post-punk pop of The Sugarcubes sits alongside the narcotic clangour of prime Royal Trux, and one-take spontaneity locks horns with nocturnal revelation.

Here the outward-looking spirit of 1971 and the anything-goes mentality of the Scandinavian freaks of yore is transposed elegantly to a modern era in need of new horizons, and in a manner refreshingly bereft of retro chic.

What's more, who's to say what dimensions this alchemical force have yet to explore.

Phil Swill'Odgers is well known as one half of the legendary joint vocal strike force of The Men They Couldn't Hang. He is also highly regarded as a solo singer/songwriter in his own right and this brilliantly fresh new album brings his songwriting prowess into sharp, bright, focus.

Lyrically this is a collection of unique tales with cinematic imagery - from kitchen sink realism and social commentary to technicolor splendor. The album, in the main, was recorded in the studio built for Kirsty MacColl by Steve Lillywhite in their family home in Ealing.

The studio resonates with musical history and Phil was also lucky enough to be able to use guitars previously owned by Kirsty. Musically the album has many levels - it takes Phil Odgers'warm melodic voice and rhythmic strumming as a starting point, adds a bit of double bass, fiddle and lead guitar in all the right places. It's never crowded.

The Train'has a genuine Johnny Cash feel - ¦in fact, on that track, Swill played the actual Martin guitar once owned by Johnny Cash. Blue Skies And A Saturday Job'showcases the unusual combination of acoustic guitar with baritone and tenor sax whilst the albums only cover song, Long Stem Rose', is lovingly embraced by cornet, flugalhorn, trumpet and bass trombone. Mist On The Water', perhaps the fullest song on the album, has a full string arrangement with violins, violas and cellos adding extra depth. Piano and Drums also make a brief appearance but nothing is overplayed giving the entire album a beautifully understated feel.

Phil Odgers and producer James Knight made a point of only using real instruments and live performances - no auto tune here, this is as real as it gets folks! These organic and passionate sessions have resulted in a magical and deeply accomplished album by the UK's most underrated singer - ¦.

It's about love, loyalty, family and the start and end of relationships, with an overarching theme about becoming a father, all delivered with warmth and emotion.

Miles even sings and so does his eldest son Milo on one track. About the theme he says, 'we all know the stereotype of the black dad with multiple children from multiple partners who is absent from the child's life, we see it consistently in popular culture. I want to champion the alternative, which to me is just normal.' As well as being a producer Miles is the co-founder of the Boxed nights, which have been a tight incubator of a music scene dedicated in the main to re-thinking and expanding what grime means, especially instrumental grime.

Mitch has always taken it further than most in a unique direction, defining his music led by his own personality rather than deferring to a scene consensus. An early example was his development of peace edits'in response to the aggressive war dubs'craze amongst other grime producers, around the time of his first album.

Production-wise Mr. Mitch has always been a minimalist at heart, pushing detailed sound and melody around in space, but on Devout everything is more ambitious, emotive and polished, taking his music in an epic and well defined pop direction, albeit from a sideways angle, re-imagining what an album by an underground producer can be. Devout's cast of male and female allies, MC's and singers each deliver songs that cast perspective around the album's theme.

Mr. Mitch sets the scene with the graceful honesty of the piano led intro, then P Money drops a heartfelt and emotional lyric about the charge of love and responsibility experienced on becoming a dad. Denai Moore's song Fate'is open about being sceptical in allowing yourself to fall for someone at the start of a relationship, while Palmistry's track VPN'explores his feelings after separation.

The warm centre of Devout'is My Life's heart-tugging Sakamoto-like melody and bent keys, with Miles gently intoning 'It's yours' and final song Oscar'tells a newborn his brother will be an elder brother. Devout is a beautiful, grown-up pop record with its foundation in grime.

A master guitarist and songwriter - ¦ The godfather of experimental rock guitar' MOJO

'A world-class songwriter. Terrifically unpredictable - ¦ beyond any genre tag' Pitchfork.

After five decades of recording and touring, veteran British songwriter and guitar sage Michael Chapman has finally made what he calls his "American record," and the aptly titled 50 now stands as his late career masterwork, a moving legacy statement by a legend.

Backed by a collaborative group of friends and acolytes - Steve Gunn (who also produced), Nathan Bowles (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers), James Elkington (Jeff Tweedy, Richard Thompson), Jason Meagher (No-Neck Blues Band), Jimy SeiTang (Rhyton), and fellow UK songwriting luminary Bridget St John - Chapman tears into both bold renderings of new songs and radical reinterpretations of material from his revered catalog, the crack band adeptly scaling the same rarefied sonic heights of classic Harvest albums like Fully Qualified Survivor, guided by a true survivor's instinct, wit, and wisdom.

The result is a sublime chiaroscuro self-portrait, more shadow than light, as an invigorated Chapman wrestles with weighty themes of t ravel, memory, mortality, and redemption, his world-weary whispers assuming the incandescent power of prophecy.

The deluxe LP package includes tip-on jacket, printed inner sleeve, lyrics, and download card with two bonus tracks; the CD features a gatefold jacket, lyrics, and two non-LP bonus tracks.

The album includes both radical reinterpretations of obscure material from Michael's catalog as well as three new compositions: 'Sometimes You Just Drive,' 'Money Trouble,' and 'Rosh Pina.' A longstanding but freshly urgent preoccupation with (as Michael sings in a beloved early tune) 'time past and time passing' is evident straightaway, from the album title and the first line of the first song through the final lyric of the record. Never before in his storied career has Chapman gazed so steadily into the abyss of time lost and regained; never before has he engaged so intimately with his legacy and the changing meanings of his own music over time.

That he manages to do so without succumbing to nostalgia or sentimentality bears testament to the steely fortitude of his ruminative, tough-minded songs, which survey both inscape and landscape with the same stoical detachment. With 50, Chapman faces mortality with both guitar and chainsaw in hand, and endures.

It's the unguarded sound of Orpheus descending, the snake riding the guitar down the river Styx and returning upstream to tell his story.

Planet Mu are very excited to announce Jlin's long awaited second album 'Black Origami'.

A percussion-led tour de force, it's a creation that seals her reputation as a unique producer with an exceptional ability to make riveting rhythmic music. 'Black Origami' is driven by a deep creative thirst which she describes as 'this driving feeling that I wanted to do something different, something that challenged me to my core.

Black Origami for me, comes from letting go creatively, creating with no boundaries. The simple definition of origami is the art of folding and constructing paper into a beautiful, yet complex design. Composing music for me is like origami, only I'm replacing paper with sound. I chose to title the album "Black Origami" because like "Dark Energy" I still create from the beauty of darkness and blackness.

The willingness to go into the hardest places within myself to create for me means that I can touch the Infinity.'  Spirituality and movement are both at the core of 'Black Origami', inspired largely by her ongoing collaborations with Indian dancer/movement artist Avril Stormy Unger whom she met and collaborated with at her debut performance for the Unsound festival - 'There is a fine line between me entertaining a person and my spirituality. Avril, who collaborates with me by means of dance, feels the exact same way. Movement played a great role in Black Origami.

The track "Carbon 7" is very inspired by the way Avril moves and dances. Our rhythms are so in sync at times it kind of scares us. When there is something I can't quite figure out when it comes to my production, it's like she senses it. Her response to me is always "You'll figure it out". Once I figure it out it's like time and space no longer exist.'

Similar time shifting/folding/disrupting effects can be heard throughout the record - especially on 'Holy Child' an unlikely collaboration with minimalist legend William Basinski. She also collaborates again with Holly Herndon on '1%', while Halcyon Veil producer Fawkes' voice is on 'Calcination' and Cape Town rapper Dope Saint Jude provides vocals for 'Never Created, Never Destroyed'.

Jlin will be touring extensively this year and is currently lining up appearances including Sonar festival. Later this year she will be collaborating in London with acclaimed UK choreographer Wayne McGregor who played her music recently on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and described her music as 'quite rare and so exciting".

Polar Bear is the third album in Chapman's series of his recent improvised musical series.

The first being 2011's The Resurrection and Revenge of The Clayton Peacock'which Wire magazine nominated as No. 5 Album of The Year, was widely received favourably by press and fans alike as another highpoint in Chapman's late blooming career which has been boosted by the public recognition of his talents by the likes of Thurston Moore, Jack Rose & Will Oldham.

The second album, 2012's 'Pachyderm'was a minimalist masterpiece, a single chord ambient work quite unlike anything Chapman had ever done before and gained him further widespread supportive reviews and a sell out UK tour with a solo Thurston Moore. It is from that tour that comes the duo performing the noise epic 'Six Two Thirteen' on this new album 'Polar Bear'.

The new record also sees Chapman experimenting with cello accompaniment, and some pieces featuring his own atmospheric slide guitar work. Further proof as it were needed of Chapman's still restless search for new musical adventures.

At 73 years old, he is playing better than ever, having started out on EMI's legendary 60's Harvest record label, he only goes to show that stick with it and eventually your time will come.

'Pachyderm'is an LP length minimalist masterpiece, a single chord ambient work quite unlike anything Chapman has done before and equally as surprising and different as Peacock managed to be. The second track is remix of the first side by one Rob Antony, a young Cumbrian neighbour of Michael's.

Together they form a mellow and gentling shifting work that easily beckons auto repeated plays.

Chapman is now 71 years old, and playing better than ever, he started out on EMI's legendary 60's Harvest record label, turned down playing in both Elton John then David Bowie's 'Spiders' band, he only goes to show as per the recent rediscovery of the talents of his other contemporaries Roy Harper or John Martyn eventually your time will come.

T Shirt designed by Unexpected Specter (@unexpectedspecter on instagram)

Ex People are Laura Kirsop: Vocals, Calum Gunn: Guitar, Edward White: Bass and Vicki Dawson: Drums.

Emerging from the London DIY scene in 2015 are stoner sludge four-piece Ex People, the latest in a line of bands seeking to push the heavy template yet further.

'Bird' was recorded with Wayne Adams (Vodun, USA Nails, Death Pedals, Casual Nun) at Bear Bites Horse Studios, and he's managed to perfectly capture the visceral weight of their sound, a startling amalgam of super filthy fuzz thick riffs, grunge, noise rock and stoner, combined with a punk attitude.

Taking their cue from bands as diverse as Electric Wizard, Bardo Pond, Harvey Milk and Kylesa, along with 90s sludge such as the Melvins (yet still managing to sound cohesive) the ten tracks that make up 'Bird', combine stoner hooks and soaring vocals with a crushing heaviness.

Add to that some thumping motorik beats (almost like a heavy 'Neu' at times), shot through with an ever-present melodic sensibility, and you have a band that once again shows that when it comes to heavy music, all gates are open.

Drawing on apocalyptic and dystopian themes, 'Over' tells the story of a planet colliding with the earth, over a driving, crunching circular riff.

Other tracks tackle real-world horror, with 'The Host' about a woman and child escaping domestic violence, and opening track 'Not a Drill' calling for resistance against oppressive regimes.

And album closer 'Crested' is as dark as it gets, 8 minutes of full on doom meets discord, combining the atmospherics of Windhand with the slowed down hardcore of My War-era Black Flag

'Bird' is gloriously heavy, fuzzed up yet melodic, at times bleak and thrilling as it is infectious.

It's a bold statement of intent, and we are stoked to add Ex People to the NHS roster.

    1. Not a Drill

BROKEN DOG 'Flips (Selected B-Sides + Rarities 1996-2004)' Vinyl LP

    £16.99

    180gm, 500 COPIES worldwide.

" Martine Roberts' breathy tones remind you of an anglicised Julee Cruise " MOJO

Broken Dog were Clive Painter and Martine Roberts, an ethereal, mysterious, experimental London outfit, melding star splintered dust whispered breath with ice, fire, gentle groove, spike and stagger of guitar.

Martine and Clive's rich musical influence also made its mark via an array of collaborations with other experimental bands of the period from the hub of their home studio Animal, including Tram, Monograph, Pacific Radio, The 99 Call And The Real Tuesday Weld.

As Broken Dog they gifted us with their unique strain of sublime, reflective lo-fi: a hypnotic folk psychedelia. Whilst sounding like nothing else, Martine's breathy vocals and Clive's complex guitar tapestries saw them often favourably bracketed in with the spirit of bands from ,across the water such as Mazzy Star and Trespassers William.

FLIPS (selected b-sides + rarities 1996-2004)'stands as a long testament to their rich understated palette of diverse moods and sublime melancholia, from hushed instrumentals such as Blue Star Fading'and Rachael'to the dreamy blissed out moments of In A Head'or I'll Think Of It Today'.

There are also 4 great covers included here:
    Big Star's Big Black Car',
    The Kinks Lazy Old Sun',
The Left Banke's Sing Little Bird Sing'
and The Band's The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down'.

This is a very limited edition vinyl pressing, a fitting testament to great hidden treasure of a band. DMM mastered at Abbey Road By Alex Wharton.

It was more than a year ago, in the grey parisian midst that we discovered the first EP of a group that we couldn't ignore any longer, Rendez-Vous. The band's first track «The Others» was heard like a traveling echo in the capital.

The 4 piece band was then discovered like a secret longing to be kept, but in vain. While the expectance were heavy on the band, they kept their distance with the outside and focused on the music. So for a while they hibernated in a cave in Bastille that became the core and inspired the corrosive sound of this second EP «Distance».

The mixing was entrusted to Ben Greenberg, singer and bassist of The Men also producer of Destruction Unit, Beach Fossils and other Sacred Bones Record artists.

The result is a six track EP that sounds closer to the vision of the band. Supported by a procession of ghosts like Fad Gadget's, Sad Lovers and Giants, the Dance Society's or Nitzer Ebb's ones, that the band resurfaces from the underground ready to shake the dead.

The EP is like a heartbreaking beautiful reunion, which is mostly the case with the best rendez-vous.

Ulrika Spacek return on June 2nd with the release of their second album, Modern English Decoration. Much like their debut album released in early 2016, the band chose to record, produce and mix the entirety of the record in their shared house - a former art gallery called KEN', so named because of a cryptic inscription found above the front door.

The relatively short amount of time between their first and second albums is testament to the band's self-contained creative environment and the productivity it encourages. There's a tendency to label this degree of self-reliant creativity DIY'- and the band do certainly feel emboldened by that ethos - yet to consider Modern English Decoration solely in these terms is a disservice.

Their craft is considered and purposeful, the means of its production reflecting the band's overall vision rather than the value system of an often haphazard and accidental DIY culture. 'We enjoy listening to music through the album format and want our records to reflect that', says Rhys Edwards (guitars, vocals, synthesiser).

Ulrika Spacek formed in Berlin in one night, when 14-year-long friends Rhys Edwards and Rhys Williams conceptualised Ulrika Spacek'and came up with The Album Paranoia as their debut album title. Moving back to London with the intention to record it, they were joined by Joseph Stone (guitars, organ, synths, violin), Ben White (bass) and Callum Brown (drums, percussion), ossifying into the five-piece they are now. The album was released soon after with little forewarning  and was accompanied by a year long, near-monthly club night called Oysterland.

Given the lyrics often favour abstraction and the vocals can be more impressionistic than declarative, the album title itself offers perhaps the most telling entry point to the record. In part, it's a self-effacing play on an interior design cliché that references the meticulous creative processes the band adheres to. There's also a nod towards the environment in which it was created - a Victorian house turned art gallery turned home studio

Unsurprisingly given the context of its creation, Modern English Decoration might be considered a companion piece of sorts to The Album Paranoia. But there are crucial differences. Most notably, this isn't the work of the Ulrika Spacek conceptualised by Edwards and Williams in Berlin - Modern English Decoration is the band as five rather than two people, and it shows.

Those who have witnessed the intensity of their live show will instantly recognise the merits in this. The bass and drums provide a versatile anchor, at once soft, then aggressive, while the vocals drift woozily in and out, like druggy hindsight or skewed premonition. With three guitarists in the band guitars were always going to be central to the music, but what is less expected is the dynamic interplay between the trio that suggests a three-headed version of the Verlaine-Lloyd axis at the heart of Television.

What's more, the absence of reverb is integral, in part attributable to the ambience of the studio, but also a conscious decision in order to add focus. And focus is the abiding term: this is an album designed to be just so - a 45 minute commitment, a surrender. - ¨
