Something of an international supergroup, the founding of this excellent ensemble is a touch of genius that remains something of a mystery.
Hand-picked by writer and film-maker Philip Mullarkey to record and play live as part of the art/film project [box], the four musicians met for the first time in Atlantis Studio in Stockholm for two short days of recording without having planned, scored or prepared any music in advance.
It quickly became apparent that this avant-garde juggernaut was heading in the right direction - the musical interplay making it hard to believe that these complex pieces were actually improvised on the spot - again, a testament to instant music making at the highest level.Raoul Björkenheim, guitar (Scorch Trio)
Trevor Dunn, bass (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, John Zorn)
Ståle Storløkken, keyboards (Supersilent, Humcrush)
Morgan oegren, drums (Mats / Morgan, Zappa's Universe) -
Huntsville is the trio of Ivar Grydeland, Tonny Kluften and Ingar Zach.Visit product page →
Grydeland and Zach founded the Sofa label for impovised music in 2000 and appear together and in various projects on several of the label's releases. They have worked with Kluften since 1998, as the core of improvising ensemble No Spaghetti Edition.
Huntsville contrasts sharply with their earlier work, and on the evidence of For The Middle Class, reveals a quite different, more groove-based approach with strong elements of composition.
Musically there are traces from folk, country, Indian ragas contemporary music and more, resulting in an original and highly intriguing blend of instrumental approaches.

"Low Tide Digitals II" is the sequel to this duo's acclaimed 2001 debut album of the same name (RCD 2019).Visit product page →
The Wire called it sensual, thrilling and mysteriously moving while Muzik said a beautiful and strange combination of elegantly understated guitar, cello and drifting electronics.
As with the debut, this is an extremely fine-tuned mix of acoustic instruments and electronic elements.
An album of sensitive, electronically-tinged free improvising, it's the work of Italian guitarist Luigi Archetti and Swiss cellist Bo Wiget.

Strictly limited vinyl LP edition. 500 copies only. Extra thick (350g) sleeve.
Hot on the heels of their recent 7 here is the third long player from our favourite noise spastics.
The Wire called the single an extremist hybrid between free improv, gutter electronics and darkwave scuzz and they have elsewhere simply been proclaimed the future of Norwegian rock.
We stand by our suggestion that they now appear slightly more structured in their music making, but don't let that lead you into thinking they have lost any of their unhinged fire and creative spark. This rocks!

Ole-Henrik Moe (1966) is a composer and musician of extraordinary talent and originality who has never really found his place inside the various music scenes in Oslo and Norway.Visit product page →
Too extreme even for the most openminded in academic music circles, his likeminded will most likely be found among followers of sound artists like Deathprod, Maja Ratkje and Lasse Marhaug or composers like Scelsi, Feldman and Varese.
This double cd contains some of the most extreme solo violin music ever written, performed and recorded. Two pieces lasting 40 and 43 minutes, both pushing the performer to the edge when it comes to endurance and concentration.
For the recording of these pieces the composer, himself a more than capable violinist, was happy to leave the difficult task to Kari Rønnekleiv, an accomplished player perfect for this kind of challenge.
Liner notes by Cecilie Ore and Rolf Wallin. -
Commuter Anthems is the second album from Eivind Opsvik and Aaron Jennings.Visit product page →
Opsvik is from Oslo, Norway, but has lived in New York since 1998 where he's playing bass in several cutting edge groups. Guitarist Aaron Jennings is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but moved to New York after college.
As with many of our releases Commuter Anthems is difficult to categorize. Both players come from a jazz background, but that's only a small part of the picture.
Folk and country influences provide the album with a rural, almost relaxed feeling as guitars, double bass, drums, concertina, pump organ, lap steel, banjo, and various recording techniques and software manipulations creates a filmatic musical story being played by a dreamy experimental pop orchestra.

Recorded Live at the 2008 Meltdown Festival at the Royal Albert hall, London.
Never before had the Meltdown banner seemed more suitable than on the night of June 24, 2008, when Primal Scream shared a bill with the MC5 at the much-revered event held annually at the Royal Festival Hall. The festival has seen many strange, unique and wonderful events, but few as incendiary, or even historic, as the fusion of Primal Scream & the MC5.
Maybe surprisingly, this was at the behest of Massive Attack, Bristol's uncompromising slow-mo dub-charged colossus who curated this event. Michael admits to being bowled over to discover the Primal Scream's support for his old band, but was shocked when Massive Attack requested their appearance in their Meltdown line-up. 'It is so cool that the Massive Attack guys even know who we are. I'm a fan of theirs too, so I guess that for me it makes perfect sense. They are true originals, and really creative. I am honoured that they would have us!'
For many, it was a dream match, not least for Primal Scream, who have made no secret of their devotion to the Detroit demons since day one. 'I never thought I'd even see them play live,' reflects Bobby. 'I used to take magic mushrooms or acid and listen to the MC5, imagining that I was in the Grande Ballroom. Then, here we are [40 years later] up on a stage playing with them. I found a ticket from that gig the other day while I was clearing out some cupboards, and started thinking about it. It was amazing...' To the Scream's delight, the feeling turned out to be mutual, bassist Michael Davis stating, 'The Primals tear it up. I was really proud that they wanted us.'
Primal Scream pile into the likes of 'Accelerator' & 'Miss Lucifer', before a stretch of new songs including bell-strewn title track, 'Suicide Bomb, mesmerizingly atmospheric 'Uptown' and gorgeously melancholic 'Beautiful Summer', augmented by Melanie Draisey's poignant violin. A pummelling 'Kowalski' gets the crown on their feet, before the cathartic motoric of 'Shoot Speed Kill Light' & surging sirens of 'Swastika Eyes'. Davis, Wayne Kramer and drummer Dennis 'Machine Gun' Thompson were joined by second guitarist Adam Pearson and singer William DuVall from Alice In Chains. Cutting a dapper figure with his stars 'n' stripes guitar, Kramer's first opening salvo kicks off 'Ramblin' Rose'.
He is the consummate showman, strutting and interacting with the front rows. Thompson looks like he's about to pulp his kit, but exhibits that effortless fingertip-powerhouse style. These songs sound tracked America's punk-predating political counter culture: 'Kick Out The Jams', 'Come Together', 'Motor City Is Burning' plus Back In The USA highlights including 'Call Me Animal' and 'American Ruse'. Scream fave 'Sister Anne', from third album High Time, follows next, Kramer's harmonica replacing the original's brass. Duvall makes a charismatic natural to front them. Like the Scream, the Five have got to the point where their spirit lives larger than the human beings who still carry it.
Then a collective shudder of delight ripples through the crowd as two singers, four guitarists, two bassists, two drummers and a piano-player look at each other and, after Bobby has referenced Jim Morrison's 'Is everybody in?' The ceremony is about to begin', kick into the blazing garage crank of early Five song 'I Can Only Give You Everything'.
Primal Scream's locomotive 'Skull X' and a 'Movin' On Up' swell into one glorious, spine-tingling testimonial, with the whole hall singing and going crazy. 'I've been waiting 25 years for this,' declares Andrew Innes. This was more than just token encore jamming, when like minds clamber up and plug in, the connection is made! -Kris Needs.

Free collective improvising is one of the most demanding ways of making music: the pitfalls are many ' self-absorption, incoherence, certain standardized gestures of free jazz, lack of dynamics, humourlessness ' but Spunk are alert to the dangers.Visit product page →
Bold, sometimes witty, always alert, they make engaging music, and keep the sound of surprise alive.
They have no fear of bringing the music to the brink of anarchy - they are interested in extremes as well as subtleties - but their instincts as composers-in-action also serve them well. Most of all, perhaps, Spunk convince by the force of their own convictions.
As Maja Ratkje says:
Music has to be strong. It deals with communication in an extremely direct fashion, within its own language. This is something that makes it vulnerable, but also, potentially, a bearer of great poetic power.

For her solo debut Susanna Wallumrød has written the 12 highly personal songs that make up this beautiful and quite extraordinary album.
In these fast and restless times of instant entertainment and shortways to possible success, it's a rare treat to witness a young and genuinely talented singer and writer that operates to such a degree outside trends and fashions. We are delighted with this lovely addition to the catalogue, a work of uncompromising dedication inviting us to reflect and to listen.
Susanna plays piano and guitar, guests include her brother Christian Wallumrød (piano), Magical Orchestra partner Morten Qvenild (piano, synth), Big Bang leader Øystein Greni (guitar), Ola Fløttum (guitar) from The White Birch, Pål Hausken (drums) from In The Country, Helge Sten (guitar, mellotron), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass), Barbara Buchholz (theremin) and Giovanna Pessi (harp).

True story, as told by Per Henrik Svalastog himself:
Tracklisting:
I found an old Norwegian zither laying around my grandfather's barn in the mountains. It appeared that he had been a fiddler before he lost all his fingers at the sawmill and convertet to become a hardcore pietist setting down a prohibition against music, dancing, card-playing and television. That made me want to convert as well, from digital medias to real playing.
From electronica to folk music. Back to the sources. Heritage and environment. So it goes that Per Henrik is playing and improvising on archaic folk instruments like the ram's horn and harpeleik, which is a Norwegian zither.
He is then processing it all in the computer, resulting in a detailed and accomplished but soothing and quite hypnotic music. Taking the music out of the city and into the Norwegian woods, and not the arctic regions, as is the popular image if you come from Tromsø and is associated with electronic music.
Per Henrik Svalastog is also a member of Information who released the excellent Biomekano (RCD2024) on Rune Grammofon in 2002. The previous year he did a stunning SPUNK remix for their Filtered Through Friends collection (RCD2022), a track that is also available on the Until Human Voices Wake Us And We Drown vinyl box set.
