    Hey Colossus 'Four Bibles'

    £9.99

Coming out of London and the South West of England, Hey Colossus are one of Europe's great live bands. Since 2003 the 6-piece has been driving around the continent with their 'pirate ship' backline of broken amps and triple-guitar drang, elevating audiences in every type of venue imaginable; a doctor's waiting room in Salford, an industrial unit in Liege and a vast field next to a river in Portugal. Wherever they may roam.

Four Bibles is their twelfth studio album and the first to be released by London label ALTER, whose sole proprietor (the electronic producer Helm) encountered the group at their first gig in 2003. Recorded by Ben Turner at Space Wolf Studios in Somerset, it's their most direct album yet and follows a well-documented trajectory of evolution that began (in the truest sense) with 2011's RRR for Riot Season and continued across three albums for Rocket Recordings.

Lead vocalist Paul Sykes sounds more in focus than before, dialling down the effects and using reverb / delay to carry his lyrics rather than smother. The band has also fine-tuned to leave some room for extra depth. Piano, electronics and violin (by Daniel O'Sullivan of This is not This Heat / Grumbling Fur) all find a way in amongst a familiar mesh of interlacing guitars, wrapped round a taut rhythm section. Like every other Hey Colossus record before, the line-up has altered and the sounds reflect this.

From the weight of 'Memory Gore', to the subtlety and swag of 'It's a Low', via the sonic extremes of 'Palm Hex/Arndale Chins' this is exactly as the band are live; raging & rail-roading but somehow in control. Grooves for those who want to dance or for those who want to hug a wall and nod...bleak dystopian imagery submerged in relentless rhythms and low-end rattle. The songs breath life and soul - Hey Colossus have never sounded fresher or more on point.

There is a book release to coincide with the album written by bass player (and founding member) Joe Thompson. It's part of a new series called 'Sleevenotes' by Pomona Publishing and the first four are out this year. Joe's book sits alongside other contributions by Bob Stanley (St Etienne), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees/Solo), David Gedge (The Wedding Present) and contains a diary of the years leading up to the release of this record.

Touring with bands Sumac and Grey Hairs through Europe, recording the album, line-up changes, the band's history and the big question is answered: Why?

You could call them an all-female British heavy metal band but that doesn't really do them justice. Because while this is certainly true, they transcend gender and nationality, being one of the most significant, uncompromising and celebrated hard rock/metal bands of the past four decades. It all started in Wandsworth, South London during 1977.

Featuring Jody Turner (guitar/vocals) and her younger sister Julie (drums). At the time, they were 13 and nine years old, respectively. But guided by their father/manager John, a respected name on the London music scene, they immediately proved there was real talent, ambition and intent in their vision for a cogent band.

With a line-up completed by bassist Tracey Lamb (a school friend), the trio began to get noticed. They briefly flirted with the idea of adding a second guitarist to the line-up - both Donnica Colman and Jackie Apperley - but it was as a three-piece that Rock Goddess worked best. And after a landmark appearance at the Reading Festival in 1982 (on a bill headlined by Iron Maiden and also featuring Gary Moore and Blackfoot), they got a record deal with A&M.

A year later, the band's self-titled, debut was released, charting at number 65, and showing that they had the quality and power to compete with any of the NWOBHM bands making an impact at the time.

Produced by Vic Maile (who had previously recorded a demo with the band, and had also worked with Motörhead and Girlschool), the album had influences from The Runaways, AC/DC and the aforementioned Motörhead, but it was obvious that here was a band who had their own style. Songs like the anthemic 'Heavy Metal Rock 'N' Roill' and the more compact 'My Angel' (which got to number 64 in the UK singles chart) proved there was class and grit about this lot.

Later that year, Dee O'Malley replaced Lamb. She also brought a keyboard sensibility to the band, which gave them an extra dimension (again, they had thought about adding another guitarist, with Kat Burbella taking the role for a short time). This came through on second album 'Hell Hath No Fury'.

Produced by Chris Tsangarides, it was released in October '83, hitting the Top 100 in the UK, as the single 'I Didn't Love You (Till I Saw You Rock And Roll)', which made it to number 57 in the British chart. The band definitely retained their crucial edge, but showed they were maturing as musicians and songwriters.

This also came through at the end of the year, when Rock Goddess co-headlined a hugely successful British tour with label mates Y&T. And this was followed by tours across Europe supporting both Iron Maiden and Def Leppard.

There was little doubt by now that the band were not merely consistent, quality performers, but were moving forward and had the respect of peers and fans alike. In 1986, as they prepared for an American tour, O'Malley - now pregnant - left. In her stead, bassist Julia Longman and keyboard player Becky Axten were brought in to the line-up. However, O'Malley was featured on the band's third album, 'Young And Free'.

This was released in France during 1987 by JID, following Rock Goddess' departure from A&M. It was co-produced by Paul Samson and Jo Julian and recorded in '85. But later in '87, the band split up, due to various problems. But there was never any doubt about the band's legacy. In anything, in their absence the reputation grew. And in March 2013, the classic trio of the Turner sisters and Lamb officially reunited; there had been talk about this happening four years earlier, but this didn't materialise in the end.

If anybody had doubts of the sense in the band getting back together, then some barnstorming live performances totally dispelled these. The band not only appealed to those diehard fans from the '80s, but also proved they could attract a new, younger audience, In May 2017, the first new recording from this threesome in 34 years was released. This was the EP 'It's More Than Rock And Roll', which came out through Cargo.

The three songs here underlined what the Goddess had to offer the modern era, being brash, thunderous and full of attitude - the band had not only lost none of their old drive, but added a 21st century sparkle. In July 2018, Lamb left the band due to 'unforeseen personal circumstances', and after a rigorous search and audition process, Jenny Lane was confirmed as the band's new bassist in October the same year. Now it's all gearing up to the eagerly anticipated new album from Rock Goddess.

'This Time' will be put out through their own label Bite You To Death Records in conjunction with Cargo on March 1st, 2019. Mixed and mastered by Wes Maebe (Robert Plant, New Model Army, Praying Mantis), it will feature Lamb's bass parts, despite her recent departure.

Rock Goddess have already contributed so much to the history of hard rock and metal. Their place among the elite has long been assured. Now, they are ready to take it.

Whoosh is a silly word,' says Gus Lord of the Stroppies. 'There is something completely nonsense about it, especially when removed from any kind of context. For me it conjures up images of something absurd and transient - two things fundamental in the experience of listening to or making good pop music.'

Whoosh may indeed be a silly word but it almost onomatopoeically captures the sound and essence of The Stroppies first proper debut album, one that breezes along with boundless energy, a refrained pop strut, infectious grooves and the sort of jangling guitar melodies that sound like a prime-era Flying Nun band.

Between them, the Melbourne-based band - currently comprising of Gus Lord, Rory Heane, Claudia Serfaty and Adam Hewitt - have been in countless bands such as Boomgates, Twerps, Tyrannamen, Primetime, Blank Statements, The Blinds, White Walls, See Saw and Possible Humans.

The band formed together around a kitchen table in 2016 with a heavy focus around the essence of collaboration and a DIY ethos. This led to an acclaimed cassette release of lounge room recordings, which was then pressed onto vinyl to more acclaim. The Stroppies next step was then taking their DIY approach to home recordings into the studio to make a transitional leap to what would become their proper studio debut.

'Whoosh is our first concerted effort to make something with a bit more sonic depth,'says Claudia Serfaty (the bands other primary songwriter). It's a record that possesses all the spunk and gusto of a young band hurtling forward yet also knowing when to take their foot off the accelerator. It's an album that simultaneously feels young and fresh but wise beyond its years. 'Whoosh is the most robust sounding release we have ever recorded,' Serfaty says.

Combining taut post-punk rhythms, indie jangle, seamless melody and sugary pop, it's a record that Lord says is influenced by: 'All sorts of things - life, work, relationships, old cartoons and the last 60+ years of guitar-based pop music in some form or another.

This includes everything from Bill Fay to the Clean to Stephen Malkmus.' We utilised whatever was on hand to pull sounds, including but not limited to vintage synths, rain sticks and an old door frame that we used for percussion.'

This was done with Zachary Schneider, a friend of the band, budding producer and established musician who is most notable for his guitar work in bands such as Totally Mild, Free Time and Full Ugly.

'With his latest incarnation a hefty dose of voodoo has been stirred into the pot of Jones'own particular sonic gumbo, and it's a heady brew.'

    - The Arts Desk

Hot on the heels of 2018's successful reunion with garage-psych testifiers Thee Hypnotics, singer/guitarist Jim Jones returns to give 2019 the kick-start that it so urgently needs with his current band, Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind, and the release of their incendiary second album, CollectiV.

Rising from the ashes of The Jim Jones Revue, Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind paint from a broader sonic palette. Incorporating elements of chain gang chants, mutant soul and gospel, and psychedelia, Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind are fervent torchbearers for rock'n'roll at its most primal, feral and elemental.

Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind's debut album, Super Natural, was rightly showered by the kind of hosannas most bands merely dare dream of, while their legendarily highly-charged live shows have left audiences breathless across the UK and Europe.

Often found in the thick of the action, Jim Jones has worked his mojo through memorable performances on Later with Jools Holland and Late Night with David Letterman, as well recording radio sessions for the likes of the BBC's late, great John Peel, and Marc Riley. A seasoned veteran of the road, he's shared bills with The Stooges, Jack White, The Cult, The Cramps and Grinderman and many more. And he's also spread the gospel of rock'n'roll with his own shows on 6 Music and Boogaloo Radio.

A rock'n'roll singer and guitarist of rare distinction, Jim Jones is a raconteur with one hell of a story to tell. You should hear it.

Pop music for those outside of pop music. Songs for those still bedevilled by one liners and abrasive melodies. Thematically succinct tales of puppet people, vampires and the walking dead juxtaposed with discerning love songs and eternal affection.

When London's Teeth Of The Sea set about recording their fifth album, there seemed to be more than just the familiar spectres of the band's collective and overactive imagination at their disposal - the unruly morass of 80s horror and sci-fi movies, industrial ballast, 2000AD terror, 70s-damaged experimental brinksmanship and atmospheric grandeur that they'd somehow conspire to sculpt into coherent structures - instead, these ghostly interruptions - or wraiths - were of a distinctly otherworldly nature.

In Soup Studios, located in the liminal zone of East India Dock on the Thames under the auspices of Giles Barrett, all such influences contributed to form a collection of tracks that represented a fearsome and transporting marriage of the ferocious and the melancholic.

Alchemised trash, kitchen-sink surrealism, out-of-order intensity and ritualistic overtones collides and colluded into a monstrous hybrid - this was a world where Tetsuo-The Iron Man would happily share space with Judee Sill, and where the acid guitars of Helios Creed would happily conspire with the Acid Rock of Rhythm Device.

Meanwhile, Erol Alkan helped sculpt a mixture of mariachi elegy and electro euphoria at his Phantasy Sound studios, whilst Valentina Magaletti (Tomaga/Raime), Chloe Herington (Knifeworld/Valve) and Katharine Gifford (Snowpony/ Stereolab) also willingly entered the fray to assist this unholy assemblage of inspiration, irreverence and otherworldly infiltration.

Who knows where these voices and visions arrived from, yet we can only hope the resulting sounds help them gain safe passage into the beyond. Ladies and gentlemen, pray silence for the Wraith.

Fire re-issue Bardo Pond's eponymous eighth studio album from 2010, their debut for Fire from way back when. A lysergic brain wrestler in which the Pennsylvanian drone outfit perfect their modal sound. Teasing the artistry of LaMonte Young and Terry Riley into a guitar shaped cauldron, the album's compulsive reverbed guitar shapes slowly simmer behind Isobel Sollenberger's esoteric vocals 'Like hearing a tannoy at a station in the voice of Jesus.' • Elsa Hewitt 'Becoming Real Trilogy Compilation I' Vinyl LP

    ERH

Elsa Hewitt 'Becoming Real Trilogy Compilation I' Vinyl LP

    £6.99

The Becoming Real Trilogy Compilation is comprised of 13 of the most popular tracks from Elsa Hewitt's three albums of 2017: 'Cameras From Mars', 'Dum Spiro Spero' and 'Peng Variations'. From ambient, to hip hop, to downtempo, to lofi techno, garage and house, all shades of Hewitt's early days of diverse beatwork is represented in this compilation. With a natural ear for texture, subtlety and rhythm, her personal yet scholarly approach to blending electronic production with many years of experience as a songwriter and lyricist is the magic potion that culminated in this unique and beautiful brand of music. The tracks selected for this compilation have been remixed and remastered initially to be optimised for vinyl pressing, but the finished product admittedly sounds even better digitally.

Following numerous plays on numerous radio stations such as 6music, RTE, Triple J and Worldwide FM; support from Tom Ravenscroft, Bandcamp, Spotify, Stamp The Wax, Brownswood, PRS Foundation, HMUK, Jay Scarlett, Lefto, Tim Shiel, and many more, it was sensical to create a compilation for Hewitt's debut vinyl release, celebrating an astounding year of productivity and success despite being a total newcomer to the professional music scene at the start of it.

To sum up, this body of work represents the start of a long and fruitful career that is well worth following. In 2018 Elsa released her first ambient EP Quilt Jams'as well as several mixes, several stunning remixes, some highly impressive commissioned work for the Open Music Archive and the Jazz Cafe, many continuously developing live sets, a new single set for release on November 2nd via Saffron Records, and most significantly, she has completed a new album- Citrus Paradisi'set for release in 2019. • Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard 'Yn Ol I Annwn'

    New Heavy Sounds

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard 'Yn Ol I Annwn'

    £8.99

First pressing is a double vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with 2 colour variants.

Variant 1 in Green/Blue marbled vinyl.

Variant 2 in Amber and red disc vinyl.

Each variant includes is a free download of the entire album.

Main CD package is a 4 panel digipack with booklet.

Titled Yn Ol I Annwn', Welsh for Return To The Underworld', it is the third part of the trilogy of albums that began with Noeth Ac Anoeth'in 2015 and 2017's Y Proffwyd Dwyll'.

The final phase of the band's first intergalactic voyage if you will.

The eight songs that comprise thes album, sees the band delve deeper into their collective influences, embracing full on space rock, atmospheric film soundtracks, melancholic acoustic interludes, psychedelia, cosmic moogs and percussion, moments of introspection and light - ¦ and of course, large helpings of doom. The fat riffs, big hooks and endless space grooves are all present and correct.

And once again Jessica Ball's voice glides over it all, both sweet and melancholy, yet this time more assured. A myriad of stacked harmonies and layered vocals weave in and out of the tracks, adding an other-worldly'melodicism to the songs.

In fact the album as a whole, is very much a sonic journey into some cosmos on the edge of forever. Just turn off the lights, turn up the volume and be transported to dance at the end of time.

The band's music has developed and been honed over the previous two records, but there is no doubt that they have distilled the essence of MWWB into this one. Previous comparisons to WindhandYobSleep. or whatever, are rendered completely redundant with Yn Ol I Annwn'.

No one else is pushing the boundaries of heavy like MWWB.

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard sound like Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, full stop.

MWWB are: Paul Michael Davies, Jessica Ball, Wes Leon, James Carrington, Stuart Sinclair.

  • SO.Crates, Nelson Dialect, Alnitak Kid 'Sunset Cities' Vinyl LP

    Bedroom Suck

SO.Crates, Nelson Dialect, Alnitak Kid 'Sunset Cities' Vinyl LP

    £23.49

When was the last time you watched the sunset? Sunset Cities is a new musical project created to explore this and many other questions concerning one's own presence, spiritual essence, belief, love, and mindfulness while in rotation around the life light.

The group is comprised of two emcees and two producers; four human perspectives judging the light and the dark of life, maneuvering between the two while the fundamentals of hip-hop culture and psychedelic soul simmer on the coasts of South Australia.

Last year in Adelaide over a plate of Ethiopian food, MC's Nelson Dialect and Cazeaux O.S.L.O. crafted the basic principles for waxing poetic over two distinct sonic dimensions - a record made up of two sides, the first produced by Melbourne beatmaker Skomes (known for his work with Caseaux O.S.L.O under the moniker SO.Crates) and the second by Adelaide resident Alnitak Kid.

The record follows the cycle of the sun, no beginnings and no endings, just answers to this and many other questions using the voice, the drum and the body electric. When was the last time you watched the sunset?

  • Sandra Kerr & John Faulkner 'The Music from Bagpuss'

    Earth Recordings

Sandra Kerr & John Faulkner 'The Music from Bagpuss'

    £11.99

Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss, Old fat furry cat-puss, Wake up and look at this thing that I bring, Wake up, be bright, Be golden and light, Bagpuss, Oh hear what I sing. 12th of February, 1974, and for an audience of small children at 1:45pm, a life irrevocably coloured by the wayward wonderings of one saggy cloth cat. Some 44 years later and Earth Recordings opens the door to Bagpuss & Co. once again, revealing for the first time the original music in all its newly-mastered splendour.

The 32 tracks that make up the main body of the compositions are - like all good folk music - a patchwork of traditional pieces, half-remembered tunes and pure improvisation. It's testament to Sandra Kerr and John Faulkner's musicianship that the recordings work so well, not only within the context of the television episodes, but as an album in its own right. Of the recording, Oliver Postgate (in his exquisite autobiography 'Seeing Things') says: "Between them Sandra and John could play every sort of instrument from a mountain dulcimer to an Irish fiddle.

They knew and could sing every tune in the world and didn't bother with written music, except as a last resort. They were exactly suited to Gabriel the Toad and Madeleine the Rag Doll and in those roles were happy to play whatever music and sing whatever songs would be needed."  Those songs manifested themselves as reworkings of familiar tunes ('I Saw A Ship'; 'Row Your Boat'; 'Bucket's Burning'), takes on traditional ballads ('Brian O'Lynn'; 'The Frog Princess'; 'Weaving Song'; 'The Old Woman Tossed Up in a Basket') and delicious flights of fancy ('The Bony King of Nowhere'; 'Turtle Calypso'; 'Uncle Feedle').

The counterpart to Madeleine and Gabriel's more polished ditties are the interludes from the mice; a raggle-taggle chorus that accompanies the creatures' efforts of help (with the mice once famously going on strike when they were not permitted sang as they worked). Again, Postgate muses: "Once I had worked out a few episodes I would make a very rough list of the bits where I though music would be appropriate. I would send it to [Sandra and John] to think about.

Then we would borrow a fairly silent room in a remote house and, taking the various articles that we intended to celebrate with us, would spend a happy day with a tape recorder, thinking up and recording whatever songs and tunes came to mind."  The outtakes provide an intimate - and often very humourous - insight into the trio's work ethic, if it can be called such a thing. (By all accounts they sound as though they're having a very jolly time indeed.) Highlights include alternative opening words and end music, as well as Postgate sound-checking in character as Bagpuss.

This never-before heard audio provides a real treat for fans (and indeed those new to the Smallfilms stable) - affirmation again to the enduring quality of these special recordings, and the beloved programme that inspired them.  "An accidental classic of the folk-roots underground that we never dared hope we'd hear with such clarity."Stewart Lee.. And so their work was done.

    Sleaford Mods 'Eton Alive'

    £14.99

Sleaford Mods are one of the most important, politically charged and thought-provoking duos currently making their mark on the UK music scene and beyond.

They are now poised to release their fifth studio album entitled Eton Alive'in February 2019.

The new album, which features 12 new tracks from the prolific artists, was recorded in Nottingham. The record will be the first release on Jason and Andrew's newly formed label Extreme Eating'and their first album since parting ways with Rough Trade Records.

'Eton Alive speaks for itself really. Here we are once again in the middle of another elitist plan being digested slowly as we wait to be turned into faeces once more. Some already are, some are dead and the rest of us erode in the belly of prehistoric ideology which depending on our abilities and willingness, assigns to each of us varying levels of comfort that range from horrible to reasonably acceptable, based on contribution.

So after the digestive system of the Nobles rejects our inedible bones we exit the Arse of Rule, we fall into the toilet again and at the mercy of whatever policies are holding order in the shit pipe of this tatty civilisation. It is here our flesh regenerates as we rattle into another form, ready, and ripe for order'.  - Jason Williamson Eton Alive'
