  • Transmaniacon feat Lydia Lunch and Maya Berlin 'The Strange World Of Suzie Pellet'

    New Heavy Sounds

Transmaniacon feat Lydia Lunch and Maya Berlin 'The Strange World Of Suzie Pellet'

    £8.99

Limited to 300 copies. In 2 colour Transparent Green/Mustard half and half vinyl. Included is a free CD of the album and free download.

Main CD package is a 4 panel digipack with booklet.

A heavy rock concept album featuring the dark tale of future street dweller Suzie Pellet. A feisty survivor in a ruined world.

Suzie is the brainchild of Ian Miller, fantasy/horror artist and novelist.
Not unlike Michael Moorcock guiding Hawkwind, Transmaniacon bring Miller's vision to sonic life, alongside the outstanding vocal deliveries of punk poetess and avant rocker Lydia Lunch (a hind-sighted Suzie) and Maya Berlin (a future 'present-day' Suzie).

Sci-fi and space rock, hard and heavy riffing guitars, overdriven Hammond Organ and synth are all in there. The twin heavyweights of Blue Oyster Cult and Mountain loom large, but this time with the added groove of an an organ-driven Frumpy or Black Mountain.

Transmaniacon have taken and expanded Miller's vision into a story in which Pellet herself, describes the dark, underworld, its characters and situations, friends and foes, all in grisly-spoken and sung diary-like, excerpts.

Lydia Lunch's world weary rasping syllables bring a frightening authenticity and drama to the older Suzie's memories and give an almost cinematic intensity to the imagery.

The young Suzie is sung by Maya Berlin, vocalist with Cold in Berlin. Delivering equal parts Punk, Doom and Goth, Suzie gives her the opportunity to expand her vocal (and theatrical) talents in Grace Slick or Julie Driscoll or even Chelsea Wolfe directions.

Ian Miller has once again provided his macabre vision for the sleeve art. But here his style has mutated into a vivid and creepy marriage of photo montage and the inky etched characters for for which he is known.

A new vision of Suzie, perhaps a Hogarth or Durer painting for the 21st century.
Step into the nightmare world of Suzie Pellet.

    Great Waters

    Dusty Stray 'Estranged'

    £11.49

The Upside Of Down: Dusty Stray's Fifth Album Estranged Started In The Highlands And Finished In The Lowlands Since the release of the previous Dusty Stray album A Tree Fell And Other Songs in 2015, Jonathan Brown - the man behind the music - moved from the flat Netherlands to mountainous Colorado, USA and back again.

Living in the fatherland for the first time in 20 years had its ups and downs. Among the downs: at the very first Dusty Stray concert in Colorado he was  asked by the club owner to leave after the first set explaining that the music was too much of a 'downer' for a Saturday night.

Among the ups: he had the opportunity to play and record with some exceptional musicians who are now featured on the new Dusty Stray album Estranged. A combination of recordings with these musicians in the US and recordings made with regular collaborator and legendary producer Kramer (Low, Ween, Galaxie 500), Estranged takes the listener on a gentle meander through fourteen songs in the Dusty Stray tradition of 'delightfully dark' (Americana.uk): songs about aging, unrequited love, untimely death, childhood nightmares and writer/illustrator Edward Gorey.

As far as the sound, expect the trademark Dusty Stray acousticdriven music with the occasional lap steel guitar, banjo, ukulele accompanied by lightly psychedelic undertones. There's also one cover of a classic by the late Leonard Cohen, master of 'downer' songs.

Laurent Jeanneau 'Music of Southern Laos' Vinyl LP

    £24.99

    Release Date: 05/10/2018

Akuphone presents a collection of recordings of various musical practices from the Laotian provinces of Champasak, Attapeu, Sekong and Saravan. These documents are a perfect introduction to the traditional music of South Laos minority groups.

Popular modern music is widely spread but visitors are barely ever exposed to ancient acoustic practices from villages. The most famous and typical one is the molam Lao, an art of singing accompanied with the khene, a mouth organ which is the symbol of Laos.

This collection compels one to discover the Brao gongs, the Triang bamboo flutes, the Lao, Ta Oy, Alak, OI, Pacoh or Nyaheun mouth organs as well as the powerful singing accompanying these instruments.

Caught on the spot, these outstanding testimonies were collected between 2006 and 2013 by Laurent Jeanneau, aka King Gong. Through his researches, this self-taught ethnologist has gradually become one of the specialists of the field, building up a collection of complete and fascinating sound archives which contribute documenting parts of this immaterial heritage.

MUSIC OF SOUTHERN LAOS brings some light on a region of South East Asia still largely unknown from the general audience as well as the recently reborn ethnographic musical industry.

This compilation will delight both molam lovers and beginners unused to South East Asian sounds.

Big Joanie recorded SISTAHS'over several sessions from November 2017 to January 2018 at Hermitage Works Studio with producer Margo Broom. The album title derives from the band's belief in sisterhood and female friendship. The album cover features Steph's mum Joan, whom the band is named after, and her aunt on holiday in Wales. Outside of the band all three members are involved in communitarian activities whether running the festival for punks of colour Decolonise Fest, volunteering at Girls Rock Camp, or leading the Stop Rainbow Racism campaign which works to stop racist performances in LGBT venues. • Jlin 'Autobiography (Music from Wayne McGregor's Autobiography)'

    Planet Mu Records

Jlin 'Autobiography (Music from Wayne McGregor's Autobiography)'

    £7.99

By now, the story of how Jlin went from working in a steel factory in Gary, Indiana to being one of the most widely appreciated electronic musicians is well known.
'Black Origami' was one of the most reviewed and lauded albums last year.

Seriously prolific and seriously hard-working, she has toured constantly since its May 2017 release and despite being involved in a wide range of projects, still manages to find a balance and 'do some personal healing and growing.'

Here we are over a year later with 'Autobiography,' the score for her collaboration with renowned British choreographer Wayne McGregor arranged by Unsound. This isn't technically her third album (that's due to arrive in 2019 or 2020), but the soundtrack stands up on its own with all the emotional peaks and troughs of a well-sequenced longplayer.

For Jlin, making music for dance is the fulfillment of one of her lifelong dreams - and remarkably, Company Wayne McGregor's performance was the first show she'd ever seen. She describes the process of working with Wayne: 'We first met face to face in October 2016 in a downtown Chicago hotel, talking for about a solid two hours. Immediately, I saw Wayne was very friendly and energetic. He's brilliant, witty, and knows exactly what he wants; an absolute gem to work with.

Before I even started composing for Autobiography, Wayne told me so gently that he trusts me completely with my direction of creating the score. That was the best feeling in the world. I would wake up at two in the morning and work until six in the evening until I completed all the pieces. We were both very happy with the outcome. Creating the score for an impeccable piece of work such as Autobiography changed my life as an artist.' 'Autobiography' is a highlight in an evolving and growing career.

During the last year, Jlin has also become an in-demand remixer, securing her place among a roster of music heavyweights. Unsurprisingly, given her positive and outgoing nature, she also developed friendships with the artists she has remixed such as Björk, Max Richter and Ben Frost. Jlin will be touring with Company Wayne McGregor performing 'Autobiography' this year in addition to completing a commission for the Kronos Quartet titled 'Little Black Book.'

She still approaches every performance 'with the same attitude of doing my best to execute a good show, no more, no less. Doing my best is what's most important to me.' She also still lives in Gary, Indiana, which keeps her grounded. She notes with her typical humility, 'The local community is a little more knowledgeable of me now. But I don't mind my community taking its time.'

    Planet Mu Records

    Ital Tek 'Bodied'

Follow up to his acclaimed 2016 album 'Hollowed'. Stepping in a different direction from that album, It's as if Hollowed's detailed world has been fleshed out and filled with the spectre of human voices.

As on his last album, the sounds on 'Bodied' are highly designed, but this time barely a whisper of dance music remains. Instead it's built around acoustic elements and ghostly choral arrangements, refracted and transformed into atmospheric, alien forms which are given the time to settle and transform. Rhythm is used only as a tool to give his world a sense of dark, mechanical momentum.

    Alan explains:
"After completing 'Hollowed' I had over a year away from writing any of my own material. I was working, composing music for a video game and a number of different projects. I needed to find a way back in and I rediscovered the joy of music being a release as opposed to a job. I was getting up really early and sketching out lots of ideas very fast, squeezing in quick bursts of writing at the beginning or end of long studio day spent working on other musical projects."

"It was important for me to define the world that the album was going to inhabit before taking it any further, so I put a much greater focus into the sound design and palette than I had before. I wanted to make the music sound very physical, geometric, and monolithic, as if it inhabited a physical space."

"On 'Bodied' the music focuses on the interplay between the minuscule and the vast, beauty and brutalism. With this album I was much more concerned with dynamics and the discipline of holding tension; the use of space and silence to provide a counterpoint to the intensity."

"Most importantly, I was keen for there to be a human acoustic foundation, so I did a lot of live recording of cello, violin, harp and guitar - anything I could get my hands on. I was certain that I wanted there to be a greater vocal presence - nothing lyrical or at the forefront but to give it an underlying organic quality - to impart some humanity into the music.

"As Ital Tek moves further from his roots, he's creating new sounds and spaces in which his music can exist. It's up to the listener to decide what kind of world 'Bodied' evokes, but it's certainly one that's beautiful and rewarding to spend time in.

Rabbit Island 'Deep in The Big' Vinyl LP

    £16.99

Winter 2018 will see Perth's angelic Rabbit Island release her newest album; Deep in The Big . A culmination of the music Amber Fresh is known and adored for in her hometown, Perth/Fremantle, and beyond, Deep in The Big is a pure experience that will take listeners somewhere beautiful and new. Amber is an artist who cannot create anything un-beautiful.

In Deep in The Big she uses piano, guitar, organ, voice and a swag of effects to build a rippling, oceanic work. Part of the Perth/Fremantle psych-renaissance, but treading her own path, Rabbit Island shoots for her own constellation of sound, lands there, and doesn't look back.

Deep in The Big was recorded in Melbourne and Ocean Beach (Wurundjeri and Whadjuk land) in 2015 in the soft wooden rooms of Soundpark Studio and by the sea at producer Aden Senycia's Soft Machine studio.

Mastering was done at Poons Head with Rob Grant (Tame Impala, POND, Jeff Martin, Death Cab for Cutie, Melody's Echo Chamber). Aden Senycia recorded the album (Nathalie Pavlovic assisting) and mixed it with Amber.

Amber's friend and collaborator Nicholas Allbrook joins on guitar and voice in some tracks, and a few other friends (Tristan Parr, Benjamin Witt, Peter Bibby, Leonie Brialey) dip a sound, a conversation, or a cello in too.

Deep in The Big is healing music from Perth's angel of experimental lo-fi romantic spiritual songs, Amber Fresh.

SUDDEN INFANT is a Swiss Industrial-Dada-Noise-Rock band based in Berlin. Their 2014 album "Wölfli's Nightmare' on Voodoo Rhythm Records was produced by Roli Mosimann (Swans, The Young Gods, Wiseblood) and was very well received by critics and audiences.

In the past Sudden Infant toured with Sleaford Mods and played alongside Wolf Eyes, Ben Frost, Merzbow, Derek Bailey, Jim O'Rourke, Thurston Moore and many others.

The brand new 2018 album - žBuddhist Nihilism' coming in August on Harbinger Sound (Harbinger189) will consolidate the bands ability for bizarre and intense compositions full of left field humor, powerful rhythms and twisted structures. Brilliantly mixed and mastered by Martin Siewert (Radian) in his Vienna studio.

"Buddhist Nihilism, the new Sudden Infant album is a real fistful of sturm und drang, a real departure for the band. The new record leaves some of the noise and industrial elements behind and sees the band streamlining its approach. The barebones, minimal throb recalls fellow travelers The Ex and Suicide, with your somewhat unstable downstairs neighbor screaming at the daily horrors flashing on the television screen.' - Daniel Blumin / WFMU

    Heavee 'WFM' Vinyl LP

    £11.99

The 8 track album features new collaborations with DJ Phil, Gantman, DJ Paypal, and Sirr Tmo, and a previously unreleased classic from 2013, co-written with DJ Rashad. WFM will be available in Vinyl and digital formats on September 7th 2018.

Listening to WFM, the first thing that jumps out at you is Heavee's masterful use of synthesizers and sound design. You get the sense that these elements have been lovingly crafted during countless hours of sonic experimentation and invention in the studio.

As Heavee explains, the primary focus on synths represents a departure from his usual creative process: 'Usually in my method of production, synths or sounds come somewhat close to last, likely after I find structure or rhythm. Basically, it's not something I particularly go for first, but this time around they became the building blocks'.

Heavee has made a conscious decision to challenge himself, adopting a different approach to his past productions. In doing so, he moves away from the familiar sampling techniques which characterised his earlier work: 'I am a child of the last days of ghetto house culture as it shifted into juke/footwork. My parents, aunties, and uncles played house and ghetto house music at family functions, BBQs and house parties. That's my roots and where I came from.

However, on this record, I chose to stray away from vocal samples, to give myself room to grow in different areas.' Heavee finds his voice in emphatic fashion on Cloud Ride feat. DJ Phil. His lyrical content and flow are on point as the track flips seamlessly from hip hop to footwork and back again. DJ Phil features on 3 tracks in total, a reflection of Heavee and Phil's close friendship and musical connection.

As Heavee explains: 'Phil's studio is a safe space for me. Whether he is in the room or not, I don't feel weird about trying something that might be silly, taking it to the next level, or coming from a place of pure inspiration. Phil has historical, musical and cultural knowledge relevant to Chicago.

He shares a lot of invaluable knowledge with me' WFM features It's Wack a classic collaboration with DJ Rashad that still sounds fresh today. Heavee remembers how Rashad would always stay connected, even during his relentless touring schedule: 'We'd get calls no matter where he was. We would talk about everything!

He ALWAYS had new info; what new music was popping, scenes that were really accepting or supportive of what we were doing, blends that made the party go off, sites, adventures and just fuel us with support from him and give us living proof of the global support that was to come and the journey that was ahead of us.' Although Heavee makes music with the dancefloor firmly in mind, the sheer quality of his music transcends that space.

So sit back and enjoy the next chapter in the Teklife story. All that remains is for Heavee to sign out with a message for the worldwide Teklife family: 'First, Thank you to everyone who supports what I do as an Individual, and Teklife Music as an entirety. You don't understand how much your support means to us, it literally keeps us moving.

The takeover is far from over! Second, thank you to everyone involved in this project, I couldn't have made it without you. This process taught me so much about what it takes to become the person you want to be. It starts inside of you, and you have to really work for it, you can't wait and wonder. I feel beyond blessed to present this gift to the world, walking this journey of self -discovery through music with you!!!'

  • Factory Floor 'A Soundtrack For A Film'

    Heart Of Data

Factory Floor 'A Soundtrack For A Film'

    £9.99

Factory Floor were originally commissioned by curator Chris Bell of London's Science Museum, to write a live score for Fritz Lang's 1927 silent cinematic landmark, Metropolis.

Widely regarded as a pioneering work of science fiction, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future where a city's downtrodden, exploited underclass of workers secretly plot a revolt.

The 150 minute brand new score was first performed at the Science Museum's IMAX on 28th April 2017, coinciding with the 90th anniversary release of Metropolis and as part of the acclaimed Robots exhibition and event series. Following the success of the London Science Museum event, Factory Floor took to the studio to record the score in its entirety.

Mixed by Nik Void except for Heart of data and Babel which was mixed by award-winning producer Marta Salogni. The box set includes the entire 2.5 reimagined score on four 12". Artwork by British artist Haroon Mirza adapted and arranged by Nik Void in collaboration with illustrator Sam Moore.

Factory Floor are Gabriel Gurnsey and Nik Void, whose electronic improvisational style of performance has seen them at home in gallery spaces like Tate Modern, to clubs like fabric and Berghain to a remote volcanic Island of Stromboli in collaboration with artist Haroon Mirza.

Their critically acclaimed second album 25 25 was released in the summer of 2016 on DFA Records.

  • Harmony Rockets with Special Guest Peter Walker 'Lachesis/Clotho/Atropos'

    Tompkins Square

Harmony Rockets with Special Guest Peter Walker 'Lachesis/Clotho/Atropos'

    £12.99

    - ¦this small town (Woodstock), housing as it did so many maverick talents, fostered a scene of damage and dysfunction that endures to this day. It pulled in all manner of wannabes and hangers-on, alcoholic philanderers, dealers in heroin and cocaine, and left at least one generation of messed-up children with no direction home." - from 'Small Town Talk' by Barney Hoskyns.

Longtime Woodstock resident, guitarist Peter Walker recorded two albums for the Vanguard label in the late Sixties in a style best described as American folk-raga. He studied with Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, and was Dr. Timothy Leary's musical director, organizing music for the LSD advocate's 'celebrations.'

He was also a close friend of fellow Woodstock resident, the late folksinger Karen Dalton, and helped produce 'Remembering Mountains : Unheard Songs by Karen Dalton' (Tompkins Square), which features unrecorded Dalton compositions brought to life by Sharon Van Etten, Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams and others.

Rediscovered by Tompkins Square in 2006 after decades out of sight, Walker has remained active into his 8th decade, recording for Jack White's Third Man label, and now, collaborating anew with fellow Upstaters, Harmony Rockets.

Joined in a mighty super-session with Harmony Rockets (Mercury Rev), Martin Keith, Nels Cline (Wilco), and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), 'Lachesis/Clotho/Atropos' is a mind-melting inter-generational collaboration that could only have coalesced around the wool-sweaters, warm teacups and moldering bookstores of "Old Old Woodstock", both the real and mythologized versions.

    Awesome Tapes From Africa

Jess Sah Bi & Peter One 'Our Garden Needs Its Flowers'

    £11.99

    Remastered to original quality.

In the 1980s, Abidjan's Jess Sah Bi & Peter One became one of the most popular musical acts in not just the Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), but broader West Africa, eventually performing with a full band to stadium-sized audiences at home and throughout Benin, Guinea, Mali and Togo.

Although they'd been popular radio and television performers for several years prior, the catalyst for Jess and Peter achieving this new level of stardom was their debut album, Our Garden Needs Its Flowers, recorded and released in 1985. In contrast with the heaving funk, disco and reggae sounds of the day, Our Garden Needs Its Flowers was a lush fusion of traditional Ivorian village songs and American and English country and folk-rock music.

Jess and Peter sang in French, English and Gouro, delivering beautifully harmonized meditations on social injustice and inequality, calls for unity across the African continent, an end to apartheid in South Africa and the odd song for the ladies, all set against lush guitar riffs, rustic harmonica and rollicking feel-good rhythms. Surprisingly, it's the first time the album has been re-released in a high-fidelity, legally licensed form.

Jess and Peter had shared experiences of loving and drawing inspiration from the traditional and ceremonial songs they remembered their mothers singing in their respective hometowns of Barata and Ono. In addition, hearing imported country and folk-rock music over the radio in the early 70s was a lightbulb moment for both of them.

Jess recalls DJs playing Kenny Rogers, Don Williams and Dolly Parton on the radio in the morning, while Peter notes the significant presence Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Creedence Clearwater Revival had in his listening life.

Country music and folk-rock weren't very popular with the general public. But interest was bubbling up within the growing student population, who connected with the protest sentiments expressed by many English and American artists of the era and loved the sound as well. 'It's very nice music, with very nice harmonies, and it's different from what you hear every day,' Peter says.

'The language was a big barrier though. You had to learn English to understand the songs, and the students were the ones learning English.' Having access to education along with their awareness of growing social and political inequality and injustice made students the perfect audience for folk music in Ivory Coast.

  • Immersion 'Sleepless' Vinyl LP

    Swim

    Immersion 'Sleepless' Vinyl LP

    £18.99

Immersion are Malka Spigel and Colin Newman. Although best known for their work with, respectively, Minimal Compact and Wire, the duo's work as Immersion provides an outlet for their ongoing fascination in crafting enthralling, unique musical soundscapes.

'Sleepless' is Immersion's latest album, a suite of ten distinctive, unpredictable instrumentals that effortlessly encapsulate a range of emotions and energies. It follows 2016's Analogue Creatures Living on An Island, which saw the duo return to the studio after a lengthy hiatus.

On release, the album received unanimous praise from reviewers:

'A collection of seductive instrumentals that's as sensual as it is hypnotic' (Drowned in Sound)

'Achieves a kind of hypnotic power' (Mojo)

'Full of infinite wonder.' (The Quietus)

Sleepless is at once a logical development from Analogue Creatures and a huge leap forwards. Although the influence of German krautrock pioneers like Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh is still detectable, Immersion have evolved their own far more personal sound.

Their amalgam of fascinating textures and limpid melodies gives their compositions an irresistible appeal. While warmly percolating analogue synths remain at the heart of Immersion's sound, Sleepless finds their sonic palette broadened to encompass guitars, drums and bass.

There's a guest appearance from Matt Schulz of Holy Fuck, too, and a collaboration with Gil Luz and Asi Weitz of EBM band Hexenschuss.

For a duo who once titled an album Low Impact, this is most definitely Immersion in high-impact mode.
