    Lutto Lento 'Legendo' Vinyl LP

EGENDO is a work of sonic weird fiction. A pulp fantasy. A descent through the cracks in reality, punctuated by bizarre encounters and freaky transformations. It oozes an odd mixture of wonder and fear, a fascination with whatever might be lurking around the next unlit corner, met with relentless excitement and leading towards ghastly discoveries. Like a vision of a new mythological age, one that aims more at subverting and making fun of itself than educating towards any kind of morality.

Or a self-conscious fantasy RPG turning into a full-on immersive experience. The author, Lubomir Grzelak AKA Lutto Lento, arranged this eccentric narrative as a follow up to his previous LP, the ominous Dark Secret world, while also settling out to subvert the atmosphere of that record. In his Haunter debut he embraces his own quirkier side, delving further into eerie derision and surreal trickery.

He achieves that by remodeling his penchant for heavy bass and gloomy dub into a kind of otherworldly folk music, drawing in deterritorialized string instruments, cheeky digital sound design, Coil-ian horror synths, and drums that remind as much of heavy metal as of Hollywood neo-classicism. It is by pushing the envelope on the most contradictory elements that LEGENDO ascends to a form of mocking poetry.

Many weird characters are encountered through the narrative: from the various musicians that contributed to the music (such as vocalist John Glacier, guitarist Adam Repucha and koto player Katarzyna KarpinÌska), but also many fringe fascinations that hail from Grzelak's native Poland: from the 1897 painting Skarby Sezamu' by Stanislaw WyspianÌski that inspired the track of the same name, to the delirious paganism of outsider artist Stanislaw Skukalski, to the lullaby referenced in Iskiereczka'.

These entities all dwell inside LEGENDO and conduct its chapters, rendering the liminal dimension of its sound as real as it is in its creator's mind.

Giorgio Di Salvo signs a new chapter in his Advanced Audio Research: a blast of free-form junglish mayhem, once more released in coproduction with Haunter Records. This time ripe with the furthest experimentations and most far-out cuts coming out of the AAR headquarters.

That's right, we're dealing with some serious freakishness : using the same generative process and wicked arsenal of tools as his previous oblation, Di Salvo managed not only to top its rave-ready madness, but also to venture far beyond, arranging the gnarliest noises into wild, crooked beats and mocking melodies.

AAR's music is still closely related to the heaviest dance music paradigms like breakcore and flashcore, tho it maintains such a unique character and such a distinctive sonic palette that makes it stand within that musical world in a truly refreshing manner.

  • Jesse Osborne - Lanthier 'Left My Brain At Can Paixano' Vinyl LP

Jesse Osborne - Lanthier 'Left My Brain At Can Paixano' Vinyl LP

    £26.99

Haunter Records is proud to present Left My Brain @ Can Paixano (La Xampanyeria) OST, the follow-up to Jesse Osborne-Lanthier's As The Low Hanging Fruit Vulnerabilities Are More Likely To Have Already Turned Up (Halcyon Veil); Unalloyed, Unlicensed, All Night! (raster-noton) and Absolute Garbage EP (Haunter Records via United Standard). A project five years in the making, unapologetically grandiose, dotted by contributions from dear friends AsaJesse Osbornel Robitaille, v1984 and Marie Davidson; Left My Brain - ¦ is Osborne-Lanthier's most ambitious work to date.

Musically, Osborne-Lanthier looks to the material composition techniques of grime, rap, modern classical, sound art, heavy metal, and more, to create something that is readily unique and oddly accessible in its singularity. Above all, Osborne-Lanthier maintains a taste for intensity as a tool for immersive engagement. The tracks on Left My Brain... are tactile and elastic, morphing rapidly from uncanny-valley EDM tropes to vast, sweeping expanses of sincere choral synths. The LP provides stark contrasts at every turn; sometimes heavily structured or freely fluid; symphonic or dissonant; minimal or intricate.

Left My Brain - ¦ is in many ways an elegaic record. Largely composed and produced in the shadow of his mother's passing, Left My Brain - ¦ is the result of countless hours of work and numerous stops and starts; it was deemed finished and set to be released three separate times before arriving at this final version. Buried deep in the material history of the record is an elegy of another sort, too, which begins in 2015, when Osborne-Lanthier was on a European tour.

The first recordings for this album took shape during a stay in Barcelona, where Osborne-Lanthier made daily visits to La Xampanyeria for a sandwich and cava. At the time his interest was in academic music, and the work he turned out was overly serious and stiff. Over the following years he started self-consciously warping these recordings, adding musical derangements to them, making fun of them. Initially, these functioned as technical challenges and were used as comedic interludes for his live sets, but eventually they were left behind.

In 2016, Osborne-Lanthier's mother passed away. After a long mourning period, nostalgia drove him to revisit a body of old recordings where he discovered something new: the sarcasm, self-effacing humour and proficient technicality he'd found so funny originally was now just a mask for insecurity and sadness. The music's journey from academic pomposity to lowbrow cynicism eventually revealed something that Osborne-Lanthier had been working at for a long time: a music that was more than the sum of its parts; a story only he could tell. He set out to rework those recordings, reprocessing them over and over until their structures completely changed, until they'd gained such texture and depth they were no longer recognizable as themselves. Years after beginning this project, its scope and scale had finally become clear ' the fruiting body of a fungus born from the nutrients of dead plants: an opus born from trash.

All these odds and ends were recollected and reworked over years in professional studios, and the final arrangements were made in Montreal with the help of long-time collaborator AsaJesse Osbornel Robitaille. Much of the compositional complexity of the record is attributed to this process ' a richness is gained from remodelling, re-editing and rebuilding over and over again; every new result has a trace of its origins. There's a widescreen romanticism to these compositions reminiscent of a vivid dream. The record smacks with a wet nostalgia that soaks into the concrete dryness of Osborne-Lanthier's sound design, musical references gallop by at a breakneck pace like a virtuoso running scales. But the gestalt of the record is the result of a singular voice ' there's not a note or sound left untouched or untrammelled. Osborne-Lanthier sees the album as something of a concept cemetery; an overgrown plot that slowly filled to the brim with dead ideas; a mycelial network of thoughts and plans that never came true.

Left My Brain... is a deeply meaningful record to Osborne-Lanthier, from the reference to his favourite Barcelona restaurant in the title to the multi-layered backstory and instantly-identifiable musical voice. The virtuoso technicality and wild, unpredictable musicianship of the compositions is accompanied by the micro-literary song titles; from 'What Dreams Are Made Of' to 'Godlike Paywall' to 'Besetting Fugue.' The record's heart is grounded in these phrases, snatches of flickering thought that are both evocative of a stranger's interior life and deeply familiar to one's own. Every record's story is an indelible part of the record itself, but on Left My Brain..., Osborne-Lanthier elevates the backstory several atmospheric levels past the realm of meta-commentary. What results is an album that is uniquely personal: more than the soundtrack to the last five years of the artist's life, this is the soundtrack to the last five years of his DNA. It's clear that for Osborne-Lanthier, Left My Brain... is a record for, and of, himself.

For all of its absurd alien beauty, this is as much a record about being a musician as it is a record about making fun of music; as much an expert-level exploration of technical chops as it is an assault on the stupidity of technicality. Beautiful film-like ambient passages flow directly into weapons-grade riffs, fluid whirlpools drain into chattering synths and shrieking frequency envelopes. Ugliness and immaturity are not only preserved but elevated, club tracks have the structure of orchestral symphonies, a multiplicity of genres bleed into each other effortlessly. The result is Osborne-Lanthier's most finely-honed record to date ' a reflection of what it is to be human: divinely uncategorizable.

Black Spiders - Those Trusted And True Sons Of The North Are Back. 'We knew the new album had to be special. We've been away for a while. The first album was a straight shot, the second on the rocks, with this new one we had to kick down the brewery doors!' Pete Spiby

Back in June of 2017, Sheffield rock beasts Black Spiders waved goodbye to an army of loyal fans with some sonically charged shows before retreating into the shadows.
And then, in November of last year, with the world in the grips of the Coronavirus pandemic and after a long year of very little fun from out of the silhouettes they returned with Fly In The Soup', the first new Black Spiders music in 6 years. Exactly the feel-good shot in the arm the world needed, while we await that other vaccine.

The seeds of the Black Spider return were actually planted last summer, when singer and guitarist Pete Spiby began taking to guitarist Ozzy Lister to start writing new material and before they knew it, they had amassed the best part of 40 songs in a very short period of time which they whittled down. And then the pandemic hit.

'It's certainly been a strange process, in unfamiliar territory,' explains Pete. 'We started to look at how we could do it, given the restrictions and the fact that lead guitarist Mark Thomas was isolated on a boat, in the Mediterranean and would have to record his parts remotely!! Not only that, but we had to replace our original drummer too. For us and probably most other bands, we would usually take a riff or song idea to a rehearsal and thrash it out till we either had something or it ended up in the song graveyard! This time around we couldn't do that, so myself, Ozzy and on occasion Adam Irwin (bass player) started to send ideas back and forth until we had something to work with in GarageBand. We got to a point where we had enough song ideas with basic structure to go into a studio. It was at this point when we had to look for a new drummer.'

With former drummer Tiger'Si Atkinson unavailable to play, with a week or two of grooming, the band took a chance on Planet Rock DJ Wyatt Wendels to occupy the drum stool. 'I've never joined or worked with a band in this way EVER,' laughs Wyatt. '2020 certainly made it surreal.

'A Pete/Ozzy writing session at the beginning of the year had produced some promising results, but it felt like barriers were popping up everywhere,' explains bassist Adam Irwin. 'We started talking about how we could use technology such as GarageBand to help, and slowly but surely the song writing gathered pace. It was time to hook up with our old producer Matt Elliss and try these new songs out in the studio.

'Heading into the studio to record songs we'd written but never played together, with a drummer that we'd never met, is one of the stranger experiences I've had while being in a band. Thankfully, Wyatt has turned out to be an excellent addition, who despite his faults (loud, southern) has fit right into the band dynamic. Covid has made life really tough for so many of us in our industry. And yet, this new way of song writing has been liberating, this is the most consistent and prolific we've ever been, and I am immensely proud of this album.'

Against all of the odds, Black Spiders have crafted an album that features 13 tracks of high-energy, feel-good rock n'roll contrasted by demonic doom that despite the disjointed, isolated way it was recorded. It sounds like a band, firing on all cylinders.

'We had to dig down deep to pull out some gems and what would we want from Black Spiders,' questions Pete. War, vengeance, mental health, death, conservation & climate change, where are we from? Relationships, friendships, our flaws. Where are we going? Alien life and Mother Earth - some of which made the record.'

Kicking off with the aforementioned Fly In The Soup'single, this 3rd ST long-player wastes no time in grabbing you by the scruff of the neck and dragging you through an album where good times, hooks and riffs are not in short supply, but the doom-drenched likes of Wizard Shall Not Kill Wizard'and the psychedelic groove of album closer Crooked Black Wings'give us an album of many moods and dynamics and a reason to be cheerful in 2021.

And why does the album have no title? 'It wasn't hard picking a title for the album, as we decided that the focus should be on the band, not the album title, so we decided not to have one. Let the music do the talking...

    Gant-Man 'Distorted Sensory' Vinyl LP

    £15.99

Legendary Chicagoan General Juke aka Gant-Man returns with Distorted Sensory, his brand new acid house adventure. A longtime veteran who's been behind the decks since before he was even a teen, he's been an essential part of Chicago dance music history since the Dance Mania days in the mid 90s, and a major pioneer in jumpstarting the juke movement that followed.

This new single, and his debut solo release on the Teklife imprint explores the time honored tradition of jacking, channeling the very essence of house music though a modern lens. Employing an enigmatic 303 bassline that mutates and breathes as if it were alive, Gant plays malicious melodies that run up and down octaves in a freaky, hallucinatory manner. Squelchy synth movements are met by eerie FM tones, reminiscent of Cajmere's classic Chicago staple the Percolator. A rugged 909 drum kit bangs the track along in true jacking fashion, making it the perfect tool for shaking the floors of dark, sweaty warehouses.

In addition to the original, two of the UK's finest contribute remixes as well. Hyperdub boss Kode9 puts things into overdrive with his 160 BPM warped vision of Gant's acid, sliced up to appeal more to the footworkers and fans of psycho tempos. Dubstep pioneer Loefah strips back the original percussion and lets the 303s float over a cloud of deep sub bass, adorned with lovely splashes of rolling snares and micro percussion.

With an array of stone cold classics under his belt, from ghetto house anthem Juke Dat Girl to his brilliant collabs with the late DJ Rashad Heaven Sent and Juke Dat Juke Dat, Gant-Man is a true renaissance man.

For over 20 years, he's consistently shown the world the complexity that makes up his city's dance culture, never sticking to one area or tempo.

Distorted Sensory is a beautiful celebration of Chicago house music, a return to its true raw design, and a reminder of just how timeless an art form it really is.

    Slick Shoota 'Function' Vinyl LP

    £16.99

    Release Date: 08/01/2021

Montreal-based producer & DJ Slick Shoota brings us Function, his debut LP and first solo release on the Teklife imprint. A native of Norway known for his renowned Oslo club night Ball Em Up, he's been a member of the elite crew since 2015, contributing tracks to the label's compilations such as On Life Vol. 2 and VIP Trax.

Using a unique palate that combines both traditional footwork drums and eclectic otherworld sonics, this album expands on the signature sound he's been brewing during the course of his career, celebrating his longtime love of the Chicago soundscape, with a healthy helping of UK rave, jungle, and vibes from other fast paced club realms. Slick starts the record off with Hovercraft, a big burly mutant rap beat riding a glowing titanic wave of jungle subbass, with vicious hi-hats stabbing through the mix.

Desire Path follows with hysterical horns cruising along a stampede of erratic Chicago percussion. A glitchy, malfunctioning computer meets drumline stomps on See Me Flex, resulting in a psychotic, yet psychedelic sci-fi soundscape.

Ultra-distorted hardcore kicks open up Jellyneck, dropping straight into a dungeon of ghostly vocals and headlong toms. Warehouse 2K opens up the B-side with R&B chops and lasers floating on a charming cloud of pulsating pads. Mad doppler sirens loop around your head on Delahaze, as distant clangs and crashes fight an impatient, throbbing bassline.

Classic rave atmospheres are met with Slick's elegant sound design on MTL Hardcore, his ode to his adoptive city. The album closes off with Special Tek, channeling the signature quirky drum sounds of the late DJ Rashad over a pounding, fast paced house beat, a wonderful nod to the Windy City and its influential sonic culture.

Carving out his own sound from the legacies of Chicago, the UK, and other underground club hotspots, Slick Shoota has found his own recognizable voice within these realms of dance music, and this LP serves as documentation of that solidified voice. Years of studying the masters and immersing himself with their work has clearly paid off, and he's respectfully taking these sounds he loves in exciting new directions.

Bridging gaps both historical and geographical, Function marks a pivotal point in his career, and is clear evidence that Slick Shoota is vital member of the legendary Teklife family.

    New Heavy Sounds

    MWWB 'The Harvest'

‘The Harvest’ is MWWB’s fourth album, and is a record shot through with the trademark heavy MWWB sound. The chugging riffs and haunting melodies of Jessica Ball are all there, however it also sees the band adding more experimentation, a progressive approach, and going a bit more left field conceptually.

With ‘The Harvest’ MWWB have refined and honed their sound from their previous three records. 'The Harvest' is a carefully crafted distillation of ideas, written, conceived and sequenced to be listened to in its entirety (preferably in one sitting). MWWB have always loved film scores and this new album is in many ways, the soundtrack to a film. MWWB provides the musical narrative (the song titles also provide a pointer) and the listener's imagination does the rest.
To some extent, it shares similarities with Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’. Not only by having the mix of experimentation and melodicism as that seminal record, but also in the way that it has been engineered and constructed as a seamless piece.

Nine tracks flowing into one another. Space age riff monsters segueing into shorter musical interludes, where John Carpenter rubs shoulders with Pink Floyd and a maelstrom of moog and mellotron. There are surprises, and of course a bucketload of heavy shit.

Kudos here must go to producer Chris Fielding, who has masterminded an epic sound world, with a much more close up ‘in your face’ mix. Meticulously bringing out every nuance, from soft and atmospheric, to expansive and crushingly heavy. The band have never sounded better.

VERY limited edition of only 300 copies in see-through orange vinyl. GET THEM WHILE THEY LAST! WDE, noted for their unpredictability and wild guitar sound, featured on the covers of NME, Melody Maker, and The Catalogue (the Indie version of 'Music Week'), among others, back in the day.

Their one studio album sustained a top three Indie Chart position, and was the number one new entry on US college radio playlists at the time of its release. Regarded as an influence on DAVID BOWIE's 1989 project 'Tin Machine', Bowie invited the band to support Tin Machine on their UK tour that year. Later in 1989 'Go Dominator' was recorded and co-produced in London by Bowie's bandleader and collaborator, Kevin Armstrong.

However, drummer Digger's new friends at the Jehovah's witnesses disapproved of some of the lyrics. Digger refused to play on the song, and soon after quit the band. The song was never properly finished or released until now. 'GO DOMINATOR' is pinned to a bouncing hip hop beat. The INFECTIOUS chorus, destined to become a chant for the rising throngs of human rights protesters across the globe, is punctuated by the clanky rock 'n'roll guitar break from HELL. While in between Dobson totally does his nut about some (presumably important) shit. In July, 2020, WDEcorp Records was formed.

WDE's first 2 tracks from the unfinished archive, Paint the Curtains'and Trashing'Around', were unleashed, and were well received, marking up thousands of digital plays on BandCamp alone, as well as some radio plays. On 14th August, the album Let's Play Domination'was re-released across all online digital platforms. A new vinyl remaster release of Let's Play Domination is scheduled for April, 2021.

'The most exciting show I've ever EVER seen' (Simon Reynolds, Melody Maker, 1987).

'This is probably the heaviest album of the 1980s. Nobody has produced a more fucked-up guitar sound than Keith Dobson's on the Let's Play Domination'LP. Pettigrew [Alt-Press editor-in-chief] will concur.

'WDE indulged in a stylistic promiscuity that reanimated funk, dub, hip hop and Birthday Party-esque blues rock.' (Dave Segal - The 99 best albums of the 1980s - Alternative Press anniversary edition, 1995).

'Asbestos Lead Asbestos clang merchants are back'back'back'after a lengthy absence spent at home watching detergent adverts' (Jon Doran, the Quietus, July, 2020).

World Dom continue to enjoy the support of fans in high places. Go Dominator'will surely see them voicing their approval once again.

Gwenifer Raymond 'Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain'

    £12.99

Welsh musician Gwenifer Raymond's 2018 debut album, You Never Were Much of a Dancer, introduced a new voice on acoustic guitar, receiving 5 stars in The Guardian, big spreads in MOJO and UNCUT, and airplay on multiple BBC programmes. This led to months of touring on the European festival circuit.

Her latest, Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain, finds Raymond ranging into unexplored experimental territory, drawing from her Welsh roots. In her own words : My new album, 'Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain', has eight songs in it. All were recorded in a basement flat in central Brighton, locked-down amidst a global pandemic. I recorded them myself and neither I, nor any of the songs saw said outbreak coming.

Coronavirus may have dictated the circumstance under which the album was recorded but it did not otherwise inform any of the compositions that run through it; like I said, we didn't see it coming. Growing up in Wales was not a theme strongly present in my first record (perhaps not too surprising in an album of 'American Primitive'), but I feel as though my memories of that time have started to insinuate themselves in the tunes here. In my opinion, landscape does a lot to shape a community's folk music; from my childhood I recall tall, spooky trees, black against the grey sky, breath misting in cold air, and I have tried to take something of Welsh folk horror to make my own 'Welsh Primitive'.

Whilst this isn't the only theme present in the album, childhood memories do form the background for a couple of tracks: coal trains steaming along the foot of our garden, rattling the glasses on the kitchen table; and the titular 'Strange Lights...' dancing above the peak of the mountain which loomed over the house where I grew up. Dead men also feature prominently, as well as personal tragedies and the madness of touring.

It's possible this album is leaning more into the left-field than the first - the songs are longer and more 'compositional' for lack of a better word, rather than deriving so heavily from the folk and blues traditions, though, they're still there - all of those dead men are hard to shake. Some parts go fast and others go slow.

Sometimes I play more aggressively than I intend to and other times I play exactly as aggressively as I intend to. I still say it's punk music and I have no idea what key the last tune is in.

For fans of Erik Satie, Master Wilburn Burchette, and Ruben the dog.

    Six By Seven 'Dream On'

    £20.49

Chris Olley from six by seven started recording the Dream On project in December 2019 at Rockfield studios. Everything was recorded live and improvised and later edited and overdubbed in his own Batcave Studio with extra drums being recorded at JT Soar Studios in Nottingham.

As Covid 19 approached, an initial internet-only CD was lreleased and then followed by a double CD in a metal tin. SInce that time, six by seven fans have continued to support Olley via his Bandcamp site and he has now released 9 'virtual' albums of the Dream On Project.

At the conclusion of the project Olley asked the fans to come up with a tracklisting for a limited edition vinyl release. Dream On is this vinyl album. It is very much in the spirit of Neu's second album, featuring lengthy krautrock grooves and experiments in blissed out sound with songs of subtle piano and guitar sounds as well as dark and heavy experiments. It sounds a bit like Talk Talk and it sounds a lot like a typical six by seven record; emotional, melodic, uplifting, groovy and dark, but above all, different.
