    Sex Swing 'Type II'

    £11.49

Since their foundation in 2014, this malevolent rogues gallery of luminaries of the UK underground have consistently proven to be capable of projecting vibrations that transcend and usurp any idea of the sum of their component parts.

It is true that they've clocked up notable experience sparking tinnitus with everyone from Mugstar and Bonnacons Of Doom (bassist Jason Stoll) to Dethscalator (vocalist Dan Chandler and drummer Stuart Bell) and from Earth (guitarist Jodie Cox, who also introduced keyboard player Ollie Knowles to the melee) to a dizzying variety of endeavours from the paint-stripping skronk of Dead Neanderthals to the righteous ire of Idles (all via saxophonist Colin Webster).

Yet Sex Swing represents less a group of disparate musicians pooling their resources, and more a peculiar spark of collective chemistry, with all forces gravitating towards the pursuit of the same dissolute and mysterious goal. Type II 'is that goal reached in effortless style and amplified to intimidating aural vistas.

This mighty monument of swagger and malice also sees fit to add a certain amount of glitter to the trademark gri t this time around. Just as the artwork from long-term collaborator Alex Bunn boasts a luminous sheen absent from the unsettling abjection of the sleeve of their 2016 debut, so the rolling grooves and mantric hypnosis here boast a new-found structure and a feline sleekness fresh and unusual for this pugilistic outfit.

Nonetheless, this remains a band fundamentally obsessed with the expression of decadence and wrongdoing through the mediums of repetition and overloaded frequencies. Type II 'is more than the mere machinations of a rock band - it's a howl of malfunction rendered terrifyingly visceral.

It's the lightning flash and unearthly roar of the primeval battle between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla that provokes awe and disquiet in the realm of fantasy, It's the haunted clangour of the faullty air conditioning unit that lurks in the anonymous office building yet lends it eerie ambience.

It's man vs machine where discord becomes harmony, and it's a fearsomely invigorating spectacle to behold.

Inverted LP version on white vinyl with different black and white artwork. Limited to 250 copies.

Container is the project of American noise veteran Ren Schofield, originally from Providence, Rhode Island, and now based in London. Container first appeared at the turn of the decade with a slew of freakish tapes for various small labels.

In wake of these releases, Editions Mego offshoot Spectrum Spools - run by old friend John Elliott of the band Emeralds - took the punt to release his debut LP, a collection of mutated Techno tracks simply titled LP'.

The record gained attention quickly in the Electronic music scene largely thanks to Schofield's unique production style that separates him from forms of conventional dance music. Whilst the music of Container sits perfectly fine within the genre and is functional enough to blow apart the walls of any club, years on the US noise circuit have given Schofield's brand of techno a rawness and direct intensity that stands out in the club and crosses over into other sub-sections of the underground.

His modest set up of Roland MC-909, a four-track porta studio and an array of pedals allowed him to hone his scuzzy and bewildering beat music over the years, leading to three more well received, and literally titled, LP's.

Over this time period Container also released some EPs on Morphine, Liberation Technologies and Diagonal, did a variety of remixes for acts like Four Tet, The Body, Panda Bear and Fucked Up plus maintained a healthy touring schedule that reached over every continent.

His exhilarating live show has hit pretty much every major electronic music festival and club in Europe, as well as tours and gigs with a diverse range of acts such as Wolf Eyes, Zola Jesus, Daughters, Pharmakon and Ryley Walker.

Almost a decade since his debut, Container arrives on ALTER with his first non-'LP' titled album called Scramblers'. The title taken from both a Baltimore street drug and a Rhode Island Diner he used to eat at with his father.

    Schofield elaborates:
'The juxtaposition between these two Scramblers is a great one. I wanted to pay homage to a nice name that lends itself to both depraved and wholesome contexts and do my part to carry on the tradition.'

The eight tracks have their origins in live performance and a more high-octane delivery is noticeable when compared with previous Container albums. Mottle'sits in a mysterious zone between the productions of EVOL and early Ruff Sqwad. Fierce electro cuts like Trench'and Nozzle'work alongside the nauseous slink of Duster', which in typical Container fashion morphs into a frenzy in no time.

A frenzy which may be linked cosmically to the fact that Scramblers'was recorded, mixed and mastered in one day, reinforcing further his unorthodox and fun approach to club music.

The Lovely Eggs 'I Am Moron'

For the last two years, The Lovely Eggs have sat back and watched England and the rest of the planet slowly eat itself. Their new album I am Moron'is the result of their observations, a relentless analysis of a modern culture that is bringing the world to its knees. 'I am Moron' is the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2017 album 'This is Eggland'. It is their second album co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Tame Impala) and continues their journey through Eggland into the unknown.

Throughout their 13 year career, TLE have embraced isolation. Both metaphorically and geographically the married couple have chosen to shun the social conventions of normal life and dedicated their band and their life to the pursuit of what feels right. Operating out of their hometown of Lancaster TLE are lonely pioneers and self confessed kings of idiocy.

Working in an industry whose currency is money, success and nepotism, TLE want none of it. They call out everything fake and plastic about the music industry and demand you to re-evaluate on their terms. They're undoubtedly the most real band in Britain, operating in a world when true authenticity is hard to find.

They have also spent more time on hold to the Working Tax credit hotline than any other band on the planet. 'I Am Moron' was self recorded by the band in Lancaster ('The Twin Peaks of Northern England') between Lancaster Musicians Co-op and their home.

During the recording, Lancaster Musicians Co-op was threatened with closure so the band put their album on hold to fight the eviction. Continuing the heaviness of 'This is Eggland' 'I am Moron' brings more depth to their sound bringing with it a mix of heavy psych, pop and strangeness. Some songs flicker between an earthly realism and the otherworldly loneliness of a one way space mission.

While in contrast, Insect Repellent launches a gonzo-style attack against the middle classes and Bearpit questions the essence of working class freedom. With no booking agent, manager, record label or publisher TLE are truly independent. And support for them is snowballing.

They are selling out bigger and bigger venues and more eggheads are joining them in their crusade against bullshit. TLE say it how it is. They've never been afraid to swim against the current and now they've got an army of fans behind them. Don't miss out on the most collectible record of the year!

    Motorpsycho 'Here Be Monsters'

Hold tight, for this is the zenith of the band's motorpsychodelic tendencies, with emphasis on the blissful and melodic, but still an intense rollercoaster ride all of its own.

Here Be Monsters started life as a commission for the centennial jubilee of the Norwegian Technical Museum in November, 2014. The music was written for the expanded version of Motorpsycho that features everyone's favourite keyboardist StÃ¥le Storløkken (Elephant9, Supersilent, Terje Rypdal, etc.).

Performed just once, this music clearly had more life in it, and while StÃ¥le's commitments meant he had to pass on making an album out of it, Bent, Snah and Kenneth have turned it into a full-blown Motorpsycho project.

There are five of their own compositions, from the tantalising piano intro (Sleepwalking - and its equally brief reprise Sleepwalking Again) to the expansive and stunningly scenic 17-minute adventure - another rollercoaster! - of the closing Big Black Dog, via the serene beauty of Lacuna/Sunrise and Running With Scissors, and the pulsing, pounding I.M.S. Motorpsycho also felt it was the perfect occasion to record one of their favourite psych nuggets of old; their take on HP Lovecraft's version of Terry Callier's Spin, Spin, Spin adds a new, slightly sinister vibe to the old folk tune, which offsets and complements the grandiose cinematic sweep of their own songs.

Co-produced, engineered and mixed by long-time co-conspirator and fellow sonic explorer Thomas Henriksen, who also plays keyboards on the album, Here Be Monsters is Motorpsycho's most hi-fi, headphone-friendly music yet, taking you closer to the songs'themes.

Evan Parker & Joe McPhee 'What / If / They Both Could Fly'

    £12.99

On a sultry July evening on an intimate stage at Kongsberg Jazz Festival, Norway, two elder statesmen of improvised music - one wearing a grey shirt, the other sporting a T-shirt with the legend Thunder Pussy' -  stepped up to the platform.

What followed resembled an in depth conversation between two old friends and sparring partners - one that ranged from the amicable to the argumentative, from hush to harmony.

'What/If/They Both Could Fly' is only the second time this titanic pair have appeared as a duo on record. Their paths have crossed sporadically over the years: Evan has guested in Joe's  Survival Unit III group, and they have frequently made up a trio with saxophonist Daunik Lazro. But their only release together has been 'Chicago Tenor Duets', back in 2000, praised in Jazz Times for its mixture of lyricism and complexity.

Evan Parker was 68 when this concert was recorded and by now music just seems to beat within him, sure as his own heartbeat. McPhee, at 73, is the elder here, but his zaps of energy on the tiny pocket trumpet, and his thoughtful, exploratory lines and throbbing soprano sax overtones are played as vigorously as a man half his age. Listen to the amazing zigzags of interlocking sound about six minutes into opening track What'.

Hear the microtonal mayhem swarming at the start of They Both Could Fly'. The duo never seek to dazzle with virtuosity, but their total mastery of their instruments allows them to dance around each other and match each other's moves point for point and blow for blow. Play this and you'll believe two men can fly.

  • James Plotkin & Paal Nilssen-Love 'Death Rattle'

    Rune Grammofon

James Plotkin & Paal Nilssen-Love 'Death Rattle'

    £12.99

'Death Rattle' is the noise of two forces of nature in collision. Like a pair of clashing typhoons, Philadelphia based avant guitarist James Plotkin and Norwegian free jazz drummer Paal Nilssen-Love generate chaos, disturbance and a terrifying beauty in their first ever collaborative recording.

Free jazz and metal-edged rock never chimed so exhilaratingly together before. Paal's precision and constant invention/reinvention is mind-blowing, only matched by its intensity,'James enthuses. There's a very fluid feel to what he's doing despite the ferocity.

Instead of trying to match the chaos, I opted to build a more solid foundation of repetition and melody for him to launch from. I really appreciated the role reversal of drummer and guitarist!'

James Plotkin's distinctively extreme, aggressive guitar sound has been a constant presence in underground music since the late 1980s, when he founded the metal/industrial band OLD. As a solo artist and as a member of outfits such as Scorn, Khanate, Phantomsmasher, Khlyst and most recently Jodis, he has plotted a nomadic trail through new metal, dark ambient, industrial, noise, grindcore and drone rock.

Sought out by Michael Gira, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Franz Treichler, Francisco LÃ"pez and many more, he has also remixed a wide range of artists from KK Null and Sunn O))) to Pelican, Earth, Nadja and Neu!. I've wanted to work with Paal for the better part of a decade,'comments James. Stephen O'Malley had played one of Scorch Trio's discs in the van during a Khanate tour and I could hardly believe it was only one drummer at work.'

Paal Nilssen-Love is one of the most intense drummers working on the planet right now. He grew up in Stavanger, west Norway, where his parents ran the city's thriving jazz club. In theory he's now based in Oslo, but there's a huge global demand for his percussive threshing machine. He's often travelling on a relentless round of musical projects and festival appearances - notably with Mats Gustafsson in The Thing, his Chicago trio with Ken Vandermark and Ab Baars, the Hairy Bones group with Peter Brötzmann and Toshinori Kondo, a trio with Massimo Pupillo and noise artist Lasse Marhaug, plus duos with Peter Brötzmann, Terrie Ex, John Butcher and others.

Bushman's Revenge 'Jazz, Fritt Etter Hukommelsen'

    £6.49

They've been called the missing link between Albert Ayler and Black Sabbath and a Marshall amp version of John Coltrane's Interstellar Space.

With this, their eighth album, they go all the way back to their humble beginnings some twelve years ago and for the first time do what can loosely be dubbed a "proper" jazz album.

Hence the album title which translates  "Jazz, From Memory" in English. The goal, according to guitarist Even Hermansen, is still to explore the link between the Shorter/Coltrane world on one side and electric blues/Hendrix on the other, but without having to turn everything up to eleven.

Sporting four originals and two cover versions - McCoy Tyner's "Contemplation" and Albert Ayler's "Angels" - this is easily their most confident, spiritual, heartfelt and fully realised album so far.

"Gamle Plata Til Arne" originates from the first ever jam session they had before starting the band all those years ago and the album closer "Lola Mit Dem Gorgonzola' is an elegant slice of Scandinavian summer melancholy, in a jazz tradition first explored by legendary Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johanson in the mid 60s.

Sten Sandell & Paal Nilssen-Love 'Jacana'

    £5.49

The best improvisors are the ones that seem to invent and uninvent their instruments right in front of your eyes and ears. Swedish pianist Sten Sandell and Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love are two musical champions with a long experience of doing exactly that. 'Jacana', the latest in our occasional series of unusual duo combinations, features the pair's sparky improvised set captured at the 2013 Kongsberg Jazz Festival in southern Norway.

'Jacana''s three tracks find the players flying close to the limits of their comfort zones, sometimes resembling the strange formality of Asian court music. It's savage and ritualistic, spiky yet flowing, arhythmic but surging with understated pulses.

Sandell breaks into vocal overtones on Kauri', like some tranced-out Mongolian shaman. He pokes around in the guts of Nilssen-Love's rough surgical cuts and, at the start of the track Jacana'itself, pulls out some ear-bogglingly rubbery notes from his piano's deep innards.

At the end of Curvature'they break off from their instruments and simply clap for a while. Two men getting down to the essentials of what humans can do with wood, strings and skin. T

his is simply a stunning display of improvisation on the highest level from two musicians at the peak of their powers and in complete control of their instruments.

Anneli Drecker's ethereal voice first became known through the music of her band, Bel Canto, back in the late 80s. Only 17, Anneli left her Arctic hometown of Tromsø with band members Geir Jenssen (aka Biosphere) and Nils Johansen, for the pulsating indie scene in Bruxelles.

Signed to the legendary Belgian label Crammed Discs, Bel Canto captured the zeitgeist of European electronic music. Their first two albums, "White Out Conditions" and "Birds Of Passage", were released internationally and won the Norwegian grammy award three times.

With her characteristic singing style, often compared to other wonderful singers such as Lisa Gerrard and Liz Fraser, Anneli has collaborated with artists such as Hector Zazou, Jah Wobble, Gavin Friday, DJ Krush, Tim Simenon, Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins, Guy Sigsworth and Ketil Bjørnstad. She also joined a-ha on two world tours as their guest singer and has toured the world for more than 10 years singing with Røyksopp and co-writing a number of songs with them.

"Rocks & Straws" is a homecoming album, an ode to her native town and region. The songs, all composed by Anneli, are based on lyrics by cult poet Arvid Hanssen and translated to English by artist and writer Roy-Frode Løvland.

Hanssen's poems are strongly influenced by the mysterious and powerful nature of this arctic region, like the writings of Knut Hamsun, born only a few miles from Hanssen's birthplace. "Rocks & Straws" is also very much an acoustic record based on recording techniques from the 70s.

The music is played live, with some of Norway's finest musicians: Guitarist Eivind Aarset, drummer Rune Arnesen, bassist Ole Vegard Skauge and The Arctic Philharmonic, Tromsø's acclaimed orchestra.

Apart from singing Anneli plays the piano and organ, and has produced the record.

In young Maesa Pullman The Last Hurrah!! mastermind HP Gundersen has found the perfect singer for this ever developing project that is so dear to his heart.

After exploring the possibilites of the drone guitar on their debut "Spiritual Non-Believers" and the slightly more song-oriented follow-up "The Beauty Of Fake", HP is back with a third album that dives straight into the heart of classical song traditions and vintage production values, blending elements from country and Americana, classic British pop, psychedelia, blues and a pinch of soul.

Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke notes in his liner notes that "you may think have heard all of this before. But you haven't heard it like this".

HP Gundersen has been a central figure on Bergen's vibrant music scene for more than three decades, as producer, composer and mentor for many of the city's artists.

As a producer he discovered and nurtured the career of a very young Sondre Lerche, and he has produced over 50 albums, including folk legend Tim Rose's final album "American Son".

Also a songwriter, guitarist and pianist, Maesa Pullman performs frequently with different musical constellations in Southern California, being a profiled presence in the local roots community. Her cousin Rosa Pullman sings lead on two tracks, "You Ain't Got Nothing" and "Those Memories".

Among the musicians we find some of Bergen's finest as well as American guests such as Marty Rifkin (Springsteen, Petty, etc) on pedal steel, John Thomas (Captain Beefheart) on Hammond organ, Kiel Feher on drums and Jason Hiller on bass.

Fire! is a Swedish trio comprising Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), Johan Berthling (Tape) and Andreas Werliin (Wildbirds & Peacedrums) that came together with the idea of a fresh approach to improvised music, with a number of influences from free jazz, psychedelic rock and noise.

Fire! is also their vehicle for rekindling their instrumental skills and playing outside their comfort zones, or collaborating with prestigious guests such as Jim O'Rourke (Unreleased?, 2011) and Oren Ambarchi (In The Mouth A Hand, 2012).

A parallel but no less powerful project is their gargantuan Fire! Orchestra, previously a 30 piece behemoth (now scaled down to a mere 18 piece) of a band that convened for the first time in January 2012 for a memorable concert. Their third album is expected later in 2016.

Recorded in the sparkling acoustic of Oslo'™s legendary Rainbow Studio by Jan Erik Kongshaug, it'™s an album with closer ties to Nordic folk and contemporary, minimalist chamber music than any of Arve'™s previous releases. At the same time it features some of the most melodic and seductive music he has recorded.

The trumpeter had planned to make an album with a string quartet for many years but never quite found the right formula. Finally, a special commissioned tour brought him together with violinists Nils Økland and Gjermund Larsen, cellist Svante Henryson and double bassist Mats Eilertsen, all of whom now appear as the central planks in "The Nature Of Connections".

This young, semi-improvising power trio - Tom Hasslan (guitars), Axel Skalstad (drums) and Jørgen Mathisen (saxophone) - typify a new and invigorating movement currently sweeping across the Nordic region: hard boiled improvisation and strong instrumental personalities bolted onto rock beats and driving rhythms.

Equally powerful on record and on stage, Krokofant pull no punches, sounding off like some unholy three-way marriage of early 70s jazz rock (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Terje Rypdal, Ray Russell), the sprawling progressive odysseys of King Crimson and Henry Cow, and the fierce heat of Peter Brötzmann's harsh free jazz ensembles.

If last years debut was a fresh breath of youthful energy, this follow-up shows a trio very confident of their abilities. They ally a strong discipline with wide, exploratory arcs, Tom's agile guitar and Jørgen's snaking sax are always fighting to break out, just held in check by Axel's tough, rhythmic tumble. Only 22 years old, the young drummer is something of a sensation, combining pure energy with superior technical skills.

This is a trio where you can hear the individuals pushing each other to new hights while keeping the solid group foundation intact.

From Original Press Release 2015 'Key Markets was a large supermarket bang in the centre of Grantham from the early 1970's up until around 1980,' explains Jason Williamson.

'My mum would take me there and I'd always have a large coke in a plastic orange cup surrounded by varnished wood trimmings and big lamp shades with flowers on them. Beige bricks with bright yellow points of sale and large black foam letters surrounded you and this is why we called the album 'Key Markets'.
It's the continuation of the day to day and how we see it, the un-incredible landscape.'

'The album was recorded in various periods between summer 2014 through to October of that year. We worked fast as we normally do, the method was the same as the other albums and like the other two, the sound has naturally moved itself along.

'Key Markets' is in places quite abstract but it still deals heavily with the disorientation of modern existence. It still touches on character assassination, the delusion of grandeur and the pointlessness of government politics. It's a classic. Fuck em.

Combining electronic frames, reverberated guitars, keyboards and tight drum machines, "20 YEARS" unfolds in spectral explosions and dark but colorful tensions.

"Strange to see how your instincts always lead you to the same place. The «cave» was the place for the 3 members of SURE : a fantasized dancefloor where Post-Punk's grim could seamlessly mix with mainstream pop, and where hardcore fans could dance on a catchy beat.

But that frame was too precise to stand the test of time. Shades and balance changed the cave's space, as the tracks echoed in it's damp vaults. What if the cave wasn't just a den of iniquity, but a real shelter ?

The choice of words can also reveal a different meaning than what you had in mind. The words of SURE thought they were talking about a present absurdity, while their mind was relentlessly heading towards a catastrophic future awaiting with open arms. Thank god, the initial vision was failed.

  • Carly Paradis 'Nothing is Something' Vinyl LP - Cream

    Muted Piano

Carly Paradis 'Nothing is Something' Vinyl LP - Cream

    £16.99

LIMITED CREAM VINYL EDITION - Hugely acclaimed and globally respected composer, Carly Paradis has revealed details of her third album, Nothing Is Something'is a collection of powerful, emotive songs which enraptures the listener from the moment it begins. Sometime collaborator with Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated film composer Clint Mansell (Black Swan), Carly Paradis has composed an album of staggering beauty; from start to finish the album takes the listener on an unforgettable, euphoric journey with brooding lyrics and soaring strings capturing every emotion along the way.

The first track on the album - 'The Crushing Weight of History' (Feat. Jonas Bjerre) is about the urgent warning call we need to face ourselves in order to survive the future -  a call to arms of human consciousness to wake up and do the right thing in order to not self destruct our planet and ourselves. And the album as a whole is not a chapter but a book from Carly's life - the last track is the moment between closing one book and opening the next. Reflective, hopeful, fearful and necessary.

Carly has collaborated with an incredibly talented and eclectic mix of artists on the album, including Mew's Jonas Bjerre, EERA, singer songwriter Douglas Dare, US composer/singer-songwriter Tamar-Kali, Polarbear, and Netflix's Stranger Things composer, Michael Stein amongst many others.

Carly Paradis is a world renowned, international composer whose heart stopping score for number-one BBC drama series Line of Duty, once again entered the lives of millions of households in the UK this year.

Creator, Jed Mercurio says "Carly Paradis is a brilliantly talented composer whose music can shred your nerves or break your heart".

The album also includes the haunting end credits theme to the hugely successful Netflix original series The Innocents, featuring EERA and the London Contemporary Orchestra, which was 2018's winner of the Hollywood Music In Media Awards (HMMA) for Best Original Song for TV Show/Limited Series.

Carly says: 'It was an honour to work with so many talented singers and artists I adore, and see how they interpret my work.

For me, the different voices embody the concept that life's essential growing pains and feelings are not just mine but shared by everyone, and when you think there's nothing, it's actually something. Whether the space in the sky above us, or the feeling of hopelessness, it's still something, and I find that comforting and universal'.

All music and lyrics are by Carly Paradis except on I Can't Wait To Get Things Started'where the lyrics were written by Polarbear

Nothing Is Something'is produced by Carly Paradis and mixed by Satoshi Noguchi in New York and Olga Fitzroy in London.
