Espen Eriksen Trio 'End Of Summer'

    £12.99

After the highly successful "Perfectly Unhappy" album with Andy Sheppard, the trio is back with a new album featuring seven brand new songs from the pianist.

Captivating and lyrical, always melodic, often melancholic and uplifting at the same time, these are all real tunes. After 10 years, four albums and regular touring on four continents, the trio is tighter than ever and have reached an almost telepathic level of interplay.

"End Of Summer" was recorded in Oslo in April during lockdown. After getting all their concerts cancelled because of the pandemic, Espen says it was very inspiring to still be able to meet in a recording studio to make new music and keep it all alive.

This being their first recording in five years as a trio, Espen is also keen to stress that the collaboration with Andy was not a one-off and that the plan is to "continue working together for a very long time".

Elephant9 'Arrival Of The New Elders'

    £12.49

After a solid run of five studio albums and 2019's two double live albums, Psychedelic Backfire I and II, Elephant9 had taken their groovy mix of high energy rock and power jazz as far as they could.

In this respect Arrival Of The New Elders comes as a welcome and most timely addition to their recorded output. More varied, mature and reflective, they are as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented, with the longest tracks clocking in around the seven minute mark.

Having built a solid live reputation even before their brilliant 2008 debut Dodovoodoo, the trio boasts what is probably the strongest rhythm section in Norway, complemented with keyboard magician extraordinaire, the one and only Ståle Storløkken. And boy, does he excel himself on this album, notably with more focus on the Rhodes than before. That said, this is nothing if not another strong group effort from what has been a very tight unit straight from the outset.

Seven brand new compositions from Storløkken and one from Hængsle make way for what we consider to be their finest and most cohesive album to date.

Arrival Of The New Elders was recorded by trusted stalwart Christian Engfelt, with early Dungen producer Mattias Glavå handling the mixing duties.

Elephant9 blends the virtuosic precision of King Crimson and Yes with the jazz-fusion explorations of electric Miles, Weather Report and the Tony Williams Lifetime. Key and time signatures change constantly as the quartet helters and skelters between tightly composed sections, driving kosmische interludes and bucolic Canterbury excursions. Rolling Stone (US)

This sums it up pretty well when it comes to reference points, but it's also necessary to add that Elephant9 have developed quite a personal and identifiable style - through previous albums, touring and close collaborations with Reine Fiske and Terje Rypdal.

On this, their fifth studio album, they are back to the core trio of their two first albums, with Ståle Storløkken (keyboards), Nikolai Hængsle (bass) and Torstein Lofthus (drums).

"The Greatest Show On Earth" displays some truly astonishing playing and is a more dynamic, structured and focused album with all tracks clocking in between five and seven minutes.

Elephant9 with Reine Fiske 'Silver Mountain'

    £12.49

It's not often a "jazz" band take the big step from the club scene to a 1300 capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band, often being named as Norway's best live band - surely quite rare for an instrumental band - they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles.

On this, their fourth studio album, Elephant9 once again join forces with Reine Fiske - the quite excellent Swedish guitarist from Dungen and The Amazing - for an epic slice of mindblowing modern rock'n'jazz prog psychedelia.

"Silver Mountain" is their finest album so far, where all the parts fall into place. The core trio is still Ståle Storløkken, Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen and Torstein Lofthus, three of Norway's finest musicians.

Guest Reine Fiske brings another dimension to the band and is now so integrated that he might as well be considered a permanent member. "Silver Mountain" is an epic double album containing five tracks between 10 and 22 minutes, four tracks being originals in addition to the most spaced out version of "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" you're likely to encounter.

Needless to say, this comes highly recommended!

    Hedvig Mollestad 'Tempest Revisited'

    £12.49

Hedvig Mollestad must surely be one of the hardest working musicians on the Norwegian music scene at the moment, with 'Tempest Revisited'? being her third album in a mere 18 months, all at a consistently high artistic level. Her first solo album, 'Ekhidna'? (2020), received a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy), appeared on several jazz and rock best of the year lists and got her into Downbeat's '25 for the future'? selection.

'Tempest Revisited'? draws lines back to 1998 and the very beginning of Rune Grammofon. This was the year we released 'Electric'?, the collected electronic works of Arne Nordheim, one of Norway's greatest composers. It was also the year when parts of 'The Tempest'?, possibly his most cherished and well-known work, was chosen to be performed at the opening of Parken, the new cultural house in oelesund, birthplace of Hedvig Mollestad.

To celebrate 20 years, the culture house was ready for a new storm, and the first name that came to them was Hedvig, a local artist that was already making waves on the international scene with her power-trio. Hedvig took inspiration from the front of the house, adorned with Nordheim's score for 'The Tempest'?, at the same time making a direct connection to the sometime heavy weather conditions of this coastal area in the northwest part of Norway.

One could say it's a big paradox that over all this might be Hedvig's most lyrical and less aggressive collection of music. On the other hand it's quite a dynamic record, lots of light and shade and enough sonic parts at work to evoke the elements, the mighty Gran Cassa drum only one of them.

The music included here was adapted from the initial performance in 2018 and produced by Hedvig in the studio the following year for this album release.

The musicians included are old friends Marte Eberson from the Ekhidna band, Ivar Loe Bjørnstad from her trio and Trond Frønes (Red Kite) on bass as well as a horn section of three.

Yet another triumph in a more than impressive discography.

Widely praised from Rolling Stone to Downbeat, Mojo to Wire and Jazzwise; electrifying guitarist Hedvig Mollestad hits us with a multifaceted and dynamic progressive jazzrock monster high on fierce riffs, rich textures, vibrant solos and strong melody lines.

In May 2018 Hedvig received an invitation from Vossajazz - the much loved annual festival established in 1973 - to write the commission work for 2019. This came at the right time, she had been thinking about writing for a bigger group than the trio, and this would be a good opportunity.

To make it suitable for album release the full festival version was edited, sharpened and recorded from scratch in Amper Tone studio in Oslo. In addition to Hedvig on guitar, the line-up includes powerhouse drummer Torstein Lofthus (Elephant9) and percussionist Ole Mofjell, the youngest member, but with solid experience from the European improvisation scene. Keyboard duties are handled by Marte Eberson, probably most known from her five years with Highasakite, and Erlend Slettevoll (The Core and supergroup Grand General, Rune Grammofon 2013).

Hedvig first met trumpeter Susana Santos Silva in Mats Gustafsson's NU-ensemble. Ekhidna is a figure from Greek mythology; half woman, half snake. Hevig is keen to stress that it's not a concept album as such, but loosely tied to themes of human struggle and being a mother in times when our increasing inability to live in harmony with nature paints a bleak picture.

  • Hedvig Mollestad Trio 'Ding Dong. You're Dead'

Hedvig Mollestad Trio 'Ding Dong. You're Dead'

    £12.99

Only nine months after her momentous debut solo album Ekhidna, the guitarist is back fronting her trio. With their previous album, Smells Funny, this explosive and expansive trio experienced a breakthrough of sorts, having gone from strength to strength through five albums since their 2011 debut Shoot!, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps.

With the hypnotic title track, the spacious ballad 'Four Candles'?, and a generally more varied mood, Ding Dong. You're Dead. is the trio's most dynamic album to date.

That said, there's still enough solid and creative riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, as well as the jazzheads, as they further explore the free and open landscapes most notably started with their Black Stabat Mater album and continued with Smells Funny.

As recent performances have shown, online and in the flesh, this trio radiates confidence and have become a surefire hit on the Norwegian live scene. And while we rightly praise Hedvig's exceptional abilities, let's not forget how important the rhythm section is to make it all work so well.

Ellen Brekken is an accomplished bassist, driving the band just as hard on the electric bass as on the acoustic.
Then there's Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, not your regular rock drummer, not your regular jazz drummer, but in possession of just the right amount of loose swagger.

With four studio albums under their belts in less than five years this explosive trio have gone from strenght to strenght gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps and receiving vivid praise from the likes of Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke and veteran writer Richard Williams, who started his report from the Berlin Jazz Festival with "a late-night gig last week persuaded me that Hedvig Mollestad Trio have found a way to make headbanging feel good". Although there is enough riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, with "Black Stabat Mater" the trio are venturing into more free and open landscapes with Mollestad truly coming into her own as a solo guitarist as well as a riffmeister previously compared to the likes of Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page. It's also notable that extensive touring has given them a confidence boost, and once again the tracks have been laid down live in the studio with only minor overdubs.

One would think that after the 'Gullvåg Trilogy'? - two double and a single album in a mere three years - this ultra productive trio might be in need of a break of sorts... but on the other hand, riding a golden wave like never before in their 30+ year existence, why stop now? Especially when constantly upping their own quality standards.

The bulk of the album was recorded in France back before the pandemic, but was added to, expanded, tweaked and eventually finished last year. The initial idea was to collect big riffs on one album and do a pure hard rock record, but the objective changed along the way as they rediscovered their folkish bent and how this lighter touch gave it all a nice contrast. That said, the main musical thrust is pretty full-on, even by Motorpsycho standards.

Kingdom of Oblivion was mixed by Andrew Scheps and produced by Bent Sæther.

Reine Fiske guests on several tracks.

A double LP and double CD set, The All Is One features music from two sessions that took place in 2019, the first at Black Box Studio in France, with Reine Fiske (Dungen), and the second at Ocean Sound Studio in Norway with Lars Horntveth (Jaga Jazzist) and Ola Kvernberg (Steamdome). This last session gave birth to a 42 minute, 5 part piece of epic proportions, inspired by paintings, alchemy and the tarot. Buckle up, folks! There is also a selection of shorter songs, loosely clocking in between 3 and 10 minutes. This is simply Norway's finest at their sprawling best, stretching the rock format as out of whack as they can while travelling their own path in their own tempo, seemingly oblivious to outside pressure or expectations.

The album is produced by Bent Sæther, mixed by Andrew Scheps and mastered by Helge Sten.

Durutti Column 'Paean To Wilson (Deluxe Edition)' Vinyl 3xLP Clear/Gold/Black

    £40.99

    Release Date: 12/11/2021

Paean to Wilson is still arguably Vini Reilly and the Durutti Column's most important and consistent piece of work since the demise of the original and seminal Factory Records in the early 1990's.

On this release we have the F4 Heaven Sent tracks released on vinyl for the first time. They first appeared in 2005 via Wilson's project F4, as being the fourth version of Factory Records. Originally it was download-only release, Heaven Sent (It Was Called Digital, It Was Heaven Sent).

A six track CD of personal dedications by Vini ironically the last piece is titled Anthony. Originally this was commissioned for the MIF (Manchester International Festival) where it was premiered in July 2009. Vin had already composed pieces for Tony to listen to whilst he was ill in hospital and it was from here that the project developed.

This release belatedly coincides with the new Paul Morley Biography Manchester with Love: The Life and Opinions of Tony ... Ever critical of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the late Tony Wilson would surely appreciate this instrumental tribute by The Durutti Column. Near the beginning of the final night of the Durutti Column's 70-minute international festival tribute to Tony Wilson, A Paean to Wilson, guitarist Vini Reilly announced that he wouldn't be singing: "So you won't have to put up with my awful voice and schoolboy lyrics." If Wilson was with us, he would have chuckled.

The Granada presenter-turned-Factory Records boss spent years urging his first signing to stop singing, and concentrate on the virtuosity that led Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante to call Reilly "the greatest guitarist in the world". Two years after his death, Wilson got his way, one of many lovely touches in a very personal, emotional and often warmly funny musical tribute.

Wilson signed Joy Division and Happy Mondays, yet never gave up on this cult band he adored, working with them even after his legendary label went bankrupt. A complex man, Wilson was an academic thinker who revelled in Steve Coogan's affectionate, Alan Partridge-style send-up of him.

And this tribute was no different. At one point, Reilly known for melancholy launched into something resembling an Irish jig. "Tony loved to laugh," he explained. "He loved absurdities." After the humour came exquisitely mournful music. With Reilly and drummer Bruce Mitchell augmented by bass, keyboard, violin, electric piano, drum machine and trumpet, the band's beautiful pieces reflected Wilson's love of rock and classical.

Reilly's plangent guitar work showed grief's emotional spectrum, from sadness to overdriven anger. As in life, Wilson had the last word, his recorded voice expounding thoughts on socialism with an eerie echo. Silence followed as Manchester pondered the loss of one of its truly larger-than-life characters. Then everybody cheered.'  Dave Simpson The Guardian 20/7/09

    Fu Manchu 'A Look Back - Dogtown & Z-Boys'

    £9.99

A Look Back - DogTown & Z-Boys is the first short documentary by legendary artist/photographer Glen E. Friedman.

The film looks back on an essential period in the history of skateboarding, but more directly on how the original award winning documentary affected the original surviving members of that influential team (Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Peggy Oki, Wentzle Ruml and others) and what they thought about the original film itself, 20 years after its release.

Fu Manchu provided the entire soundtrack for the film with the songs personally curated by Glen E. Friedman. This official soundtrack recording release features all 9 tracks featured in the film in the order that they appear.

The music spans the band’s entire career from “Free And Easy (Summer Girls)” from the band’s 1994 debut album, No One Rides For Free, to “Il Mostro Atomico” featuring Alex Lifeson of Rush, from their most recent full length album, Clone Of The Universe.

This is the only release from the band that features two instrumentals: “Out To Sea” from 2004’s Start The Machine and “Hanglider,” which was originally released on the Japanese version of 2000’s King Of The Road.

This limited edition double LP run is pressed on one purple and one green vinyl and features an etching from legendary skater, Lance Mountain. The gatefold jacket features rare photos from Glen E. Friedman including an incredible shot of the late Jay Adams across the inside. All tracks were remastered specifically for this vinyl release.

Debut album from Wyndow, Laura J Martin and Lavinia Blackwall's (Trembling Bells) new Kosmiche-Psych-Folk project.

Woven from threads sent across the wires, Wyndow strikes new ground. Following the success of their first two singles 'Take My Picture' and 'Two Strong Legs' Wyndow (Laura J Martin and Lavinia Blackwall) return with their eponymous debut album.

The project was ignited by a love of Robert Wyatt and an off hand idea of collaborating on a version of his song 'Free Will and Testament'. In a time of weird interludes the self examination of the song's lyrics opened the pathway to themes examined throughout the record, that of being and wanting and the battle between knowledge and knowing.

Who am I and do I see myself the way others see me? What follows is an exploration of the uncertain and the impermanent. According to Martin, they are tunes for whacked out worriers lifting weights in the worry gym, where feeling uneasy never felt so easy." Reflections flit between two pendulums as each wrote and recorded remotely and exchanged these dog eared musical postcards to see each others' response.

Eschewing the band in a room aesthetic out of geographical necessity they focussed on maximising the sonic palette of each song, doing exactly what each piece demanded without thinking about who had to play each instrument. The songs on Wyndow exist in the space between waking and sleeping, hazy tales that unfurl and engulf the listener in a slightly uncanny sense of familiarity.

Album standout 'All Cameras Gone' is a paean to the dust and crackles of the analogue age and the shadows of a lonely projectionist leaving the booth and memories for the final time. 'Pulling On A String' is based on the feeling of walking familiar routes and wishing they took you elsewhere, the duality of holding on to the familiar yet pulling yourself nearer to the beyond and the unknown.

Taking inspiration from the atmospheres and repetition of ecstatic minimalism and the joyful experimentation of Penguin Cafe Orchestra, songs were built from small fragments and loops, recorded spontaneously and sent to each other across the wires.

Recorded and produced in Liverpool with Iwan Morgan (Euros Childs, Gruff Rhys, Cate le Bon) and in Clydebank with multi instrumentalist Marco Rea (Euros Childs, Alex Rex) new textures with copious analogue synthesis and treated acoustic instruments were mined, even fretless bass was not off limits.

Recalling the tender pulse of Cluster on 'Take My Picture' and the late night hues of La Dusseldorf on album closer 'Tidal Range', Wyndow strikes a new path for both artists. On 'Pulling on A String' the close foregrounding of both voices call to mind The Roches, another key touchstone for the sound of the record.

The result is a melting pot of influences with both artists at the top of their game, reflecting on the smallest human experiences set against a galactic sonic canvas.

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Jayan Bertrand, bassist Josh Ewers, electronic drummer Josue Vargas and guitarist Dion Kerr have coined new genre “Caribbean Jazzgaze” to describe their wholly unique combination of jazz, shoegaze, rock, hip hop, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms that is Seafoam Walls.

Seafoam Walls caught the attention of cultish music and art communities around South Florida with a soundtrack befitting of their dark tropical paradise, and have remained a Miami secret since 2016.

Bandleader Jayan began his journey as a musician listening to metal and classic rock. His first formal lessons after a year of self-taught practice came from a family friend and talented jazz guitarist, Bemol Telfort. Although jazz wasn’t his first love but opened his heart to explorations of free improvisation which led to an introduction to Dion, Josh, and Josue — all active members on South Florida’s jazz scene.

Seafoam Walls released their first EP, titled R-E-F-L-E-C-T in 2018 and ROOT in 2019 via Bandcamp. The band recently attracted international rock n roll consciousness following a secret all-ages matinee in the gardens of North Miami’s Centre for Subtropical Affairs with DC hardcore photographer Susie J (Teen Idles, Minor Threat, et al.) and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore front row centre.

The Miami indie band completed the eight-track album entitled XVI earlier this year. Norwegian sound artist Lasse Marhaug mastered the work, and the band will stream three singles through the summer and autumn months before releasing the complete album at the end of 2021 on seafoam-green coloured vinyl via Daydream Library Series.

Harmonics of the Night' is the third in what he conceived of as a trilogy of recordings from guitarist Andy Summers.  Following on from 'Metal Dog' and 'Triboluminescence', 'Harmonics of the Night' began its life as a guitar improvisation for a museum installation of Andy's own photos.  He did not like the music they had chosen in the gallery so sat down and recorded some guitar improvisations.

Summers says that he built this set out from there. These songs and the photos that inspired them have become a staple of his solo guitar shows. Stand out tracks: 'A Certain Strangeness', 'Harmonics of the Night' and 'City of Crocodiles'. The album will be released by Cargo Records on October 15th (to accompany a new exhibition of his photos at the Leica Gallery, Mayfair starting on October 21st) Andy explains more about the album - The music for Harmonics of the Night came from a real-life situation, which was the occasion of a retrospective exhibition of my photography at the Pavillion Populaire in Montpellier.

I was able to visit the museum in advance of the opening and decided this time( instead of the usual unsuitable music being played by the whatever gallery! ) that I must make a music installation to accompany the photography on the wall, a piece that could be looped and thus provide a continual musical counterpoint to the visual. I made a twenty minute single guitar improvisation. A Certain Strangeness .

This piece put a certain approach in my in my head and pointed me in the direction of eleven more tracks. It was the guiding spirit. These pieces which vary from minimalist approaches to African influenced dance pieces and are what I consider the sonic parallels to the photography.

The vinyl version of ‘A Certain Strangeness’ is 19:20 whereas the CD version is 11:00.

Kinematik 'Ensemble 1: Al Jadi' Vinyl LP

    £28.49

Kinematik is a Lebanese post-rock ensemble hailing from the village of Reyfoun in the Lebanese mountains. Formed in the summer of 2014, Kinematik recorded its debut album Ala'in the spring of 2017, and released it later that same year with Lebanese indie label Ruptured.

This was followed later that year by a string of performances in Lebanon, as well as a number of European dates as part of a tour organized by Beirut & Beyond International Music Festival. Both Ala' and its follow-up Murur al Kiram were recorded and co-produced by Fadi Tabbal from renowned Lebanese recording studio Tunefork.

Murur Al-Kiram was released by Ruptured in the winter of 2020, in the early days of the bloody Lebanese uprising and the Covid-19 pandemic.  Kinematik spent the best part of 2020 under lockdown, trying to come to grips with Lebanon's and the world's new realities, battling societal, economical and sanitary hurdles and obstacles.

In November 2020, upon receiving an invitation from Irtijal Festival in Beirut to perform in its 20th edition, the former trio evolved into a full-blown ensemble, comprising a total of 6 musicians - the core line-up of Anthony Sahyoun, Rudy Ghafari and Akram Hajj was joined by modular synth players Jad Atoui and Ziad Moukarzel, as well as drummer Teddy Tawil.

The Irtijal performance laid the roots for a series of recording sessions, that coalesced a few months later into the long-form, elaborate compositions that make up "Al Jadi", the band's third album - 4 slabs of brooding, elegiac post-rock, recorded and mixed by Fadi Tabbal, mastered by Harris Newman of Greymarket fame, and packaged in a superb sleeve courtesy of Studio Safar's head of design Hatem Imam.
