Fire! is a Swedish trio comprising Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), Johan Berthling (Tape) and Andreas Werliin (Wildbirds & Peacedrums) that came together with the idea of a fresh approach to improvised music, with a number of influences from free jazz, psychedelic rock and noise.

Fire! is also their vehicle for rekindling their instrumental skills and playing outside their comfort zones, or collaborating with prestigious guests such as Jim O'Rourke (Unreleased?, 2011) and Oren Ambarchi (In The Mouth A Hand, 2012).

A parallel but no less powerful project is their gargantuan Fire! Orchestra, previously a 30 piece behemoth (now scaled down to a mere 18 piece) of a band that convened for the first time in January 2012 for a memorable concert. Their third album is expected later in 2016.

She Sleeps, She Sleeps is the trio's fifth album and displays an intriguing cocktail of dark and brooding, hypnotic slowcore jazz.

For 20 years Rune Grammofon have made a habit of releasing music that is beyond easy classification, in later years typified by Swedish trio Fire!, consisting of Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin.

All three are highly accomplished musicians, but Fire! music is not "difficult" in the sense that jazz and especially free jazz is often perceived. Very much a tight knit unit with three equal players, Fire! has been likened to powerful guitar led trios such as Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but with Berthling's heavy, doom laden basslines being such a typical identifier, we can't help but thinking of Black Sabbath's debut album when it comes to hypnotic impact.

    The Hands
is the trio's sixth album and once again displays a totally uncompromising and intriguing mix of (mostly) heavy, dark and intensely burning music whether one decide on calling it jazz or rock.

The album closes on a quiet and reflective note with the appropriately titled "I Guard Her To Rest. Declaring Silence".

And we say it's easily their best so far.

After successful collaborations with prestigious guests like Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi and the widely acclaimed Fire! Orchestra release earlier this year our Swedish friends are back as a trio, lighting up a sonic blaze of rock based riffs and hypnotic jazz-psychedelia.

As far from noodling instrumentals as it's possible to get, the tracks are spontaneously combusting rituals with a clear sense of purpose.

Each of the three members is gifted with a formidable technique and arsenal of tricks and effects on their respective instruments, and the album also sees acclaimed saxophonist Mats Gustafsson boosting his already versatile skills, by swapping to Fender Rhodes and electronics on selected tracks.

The oddly cut-up titles are lifted and inspired by Smog founder Bill Callahan's letters to Emma Bowlcut, recently published in a volume by Chicago label Drag City.

The strategy gives an insight into the broadminded frame of reference of this eclectic trio. With all three members pulling in elements from free jazz, ambient improvisation and electronic music, their music has reached a new confidence and intensity.

Mats Gustafsson: Saxophones, electronics, fender Rhodes Johan Berthling: Double bass and el. bass, el. guitar, Hammond  organ Andreas Werliin: Drums and percussion We are delighted to present the debut album from this excellent Swedish trio, something of a supergroup with members from already wellknown quarters. And they don't sound anything like the groups they are normally associated with, which is exactly the way it should be. With their hypnotic, psychedelic jazz of sorts they don't sound like much else at all come to think of it. Sax player, improviser and composer Mats Gustafsson was born in Umeå in 1964.

Possibly most know from powerjazztrio The Thing, he has also played more than 1500 concerts and participated on around 150 records with musicians like Peter Brötzmann, Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Jim O'Rourke, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee and a host of others simply too many to mention here. Johan Berthling was born in Stockholm 1973.

After studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Stockholm he has worked freelance with jazz, improvised music and more. He is a founder member of the great trio Tape and founded Häpna, one of our favourite labels. Among his current other groups are Animes with David Stackenäs and Raymond Strid and Sten Sandell Trio with pianist Sten Sandell and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love.

Andreas Werliin, drummer extraordinaire in Wildbirds & Peacedrums, studied improvisation at the University of Gothenburg. He formed the W & P duo with another student of music, Mariam Wallentin, and they have subsequently released two acclaimed albums of modern bluesy folk music  with Heartcore and The Snake and toured extensively in Europe. The CD edition includes a 16 page colour booklet, as always masterly and beautifully designed and assembled by Kim Hiorthøy.

Fire! is a Swedish trio comprising Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), Johan Berthling (Tape) and drummer Andreas Werliin (Wildbirds & Peacedrums).

Fire! is where they go to stretch their instrumental skills and try playing outside their comfort zones, or collaborate with prestigious guests (see their previous Rune Grammofon releases You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago (2009), Unreleased? with Jim O'Rourke (2011), and In The Mouth A Hand with Oren Ambarchi (2012).

Fire! Orchestra takes the project to the next level: a sonic behemoth comprising 31 members that should be unmanageable, but turns out to possess the elegance and lucidity of the righteous free jazz big bands of the past.

Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra. Carla Bley's Escalator Over the Hill. Centipede. Sun Ra's Space Is The Place. Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath. Freddie Hubbard & Ilhan Mimaroglu's Sing Me A Song Of Songmy.
All these classic landmarks come to mind as you listen to their monumental Exit!.

Exit! was recorded in January 2012 at the headquarters of Fylkingen, the legendary Stockholm avant garde music centre. But before you go thinking this is an impenetrable free jazz meltdown, listen again. Exit! follows in these mighty footprints, but it's also an odyssey that takes its own route, with post-rock/krautrock diversions along the way. There is a way in to Exit!, and the way out is clearly signposted.

Fire! is all about burning up tradition and blazing new paths and fresh approaches in improvised music ' approaches informed equally by garage punk, electroacoustics and the noise of heavy industry. Throughout both long halves of Exit!, Mariam Wallentin and Sofie Jernberg chant ritualistic lyrics written by Arnold de Boer of Dutch avant rock institution, The Ex.

The text, he explains, is about concrete and non-concrete space, 'and about the possibility of improvising in actual space, and the ties, ropes and teachers in many online spaces and programs. ¨It's up to the various sorts of fire to define the real, irreal, surreal and unreal.'

Exit! might be a monotonous monolith of repetitive beats, or a tornado-eye of wild solos, but it has a point to make.

As brilliant as their previous album "Enter" is, with "Ritual" they have outdone themselves and produced a beast of beauty and power, extremely well executed, beautifully recorded and produced from only two days in the studio. Free improvisations, spontaneous horns, keyboard frenzy, abstract electronics, guitar mayhem and not to forget; those glorious twin voices of Mariam Wallentin and Sofia Jernberg. It's about mysteries and rituals; in music and in life.

Fire! originated as the trio of Swedish improv masters Mats Gusfasson (sax), Johan Berthling (bass) and Andreas Werliin (drums). None of them are what you could call jazz purists; they all play in many different groups and contexts, including The Thing (Gustafsson), experimental folk-electronica outfit Tape (Berthling), and skewed blues-pop unit Wildbirds & Peacedrums (Werliin).

Sofia Jernberg and Mariam Wallentin have been on board since the beginning, the same goes for horn players Niklas Barnö, Jonas Kullhammar, Mats aleklint, Per oeke Holmlander and Anna Högberg. Basically a Swedish ensemble, the orchestra now also counts Norwegian, Danish and French players.

Members of Fire! Orchestra share a wide background, combining jazz, improvised music, contemporary music, rock, garage, psych, and what have you. As they proclaim on their site: "Please make up your own genre and mind - listen freely - don't buy our labeling attempts... labeling sucks". A sentiment that basically sums up Rune Grammofon as well, so we couldn't agree more.

Now down to the duo of Iain Ballamy and Thomas Strønen, Food looks to be more active than ever. This, their fifth album, was recorded by Jeremy Cox over a period of two years and mixed by Ashley Slater, who also contributes on three tracks.

Maria Kannegaard plays Fender Rhodes on five tracks. Strønen, considered to be one of Norway's most inventive drummers, was always an important writer in Food and it's fair to say that a good amount of their earlier output was written as opposed to improvised.

Molecular Gastronomy, however, is mostly improvised, much in the same way as the music of Strønen's other duo Humcrush. Given the new set-up and a fresh approach, it's also natural that Ballamy, without doubt one of the great British sax players of his generation, gets more room for his excellent playing.

Finally, this is also a great sounding album!

Heavy and melodic prog/jazz/rock from new group consisting of some very prolific musicians from the Norwegian scene. Having played a few sensational gigs as Kenneth Kapstad Group this impressive line-up is now ready with a more fitting name for their debut album.

With gifted violinist Ola Kvernberg, who won a Norwegian Grammy for his album 'Liarbird', on board it's difficult not to think of the Mahavishnu Orchestra when trying to place Grand General in a musical perspective.

The interplay between the soloists is superb and with this rhythm section you can't go wrong. However, as gifted as these musicians are and as accomplished the music can be, you never get the feeling that they play to show off their instrumental skills, but to serve the music.

Widely praised from Rolling Stone to Downbeat, Mojo to Wire and Jazzwise; electrifying guitarist Hedvig Mollestad hits us with a multifaceted and dynamic progressive jazzrock monster high on fierce riffs, rich textures, vibrant solos and strong melody lines.

In May 2018 Hedvig received an invitation from Vossajazz - the much loved annual festival established in 1973 - to write the commission work for 2019. This came at the right time, she had been thinking about writing for a bigger group than the trio, and this would be a good opportunity.

To make it suitable for album release the full festival version was edited, sharpened and recorded from scratch in Amper Tone studio in Oslo. In addition to Hedvig on guitar, the line-up includes powerhouse drummer Torstein Lofthus (Elephant9) and percussionist Ole Mofjell, the youngest member, but with solid experience from the European improvisation scene. Keyboard duties are handled by Marte Eberson, probably most known from her five years with Highasakite, and Erlend Slettevoll (The Core and supergroup Grand General, Rune Grammofon 2013).

Hedvig first met trumpeter Susana Santos Silva in Mats Gustafsson's NU-ensemble. Ekhidna is a figure from Greek mythology; half woman, half snake. Hevig is keen to stress that it's not a concept album as such, but loosely tied to themes of human struggle and being a mother in times when our increasing inability to live in harmony with nature paints a bleak picture.

    Hedvig Mollestad 'Tempest Revisited'

Hedvig Mollestad must surely be one of the hardest working musicians on the Norwegian music scene at the moment, with 'Tempest Revisited'? being her third album in a mere 18 months, all at a consistently high artistic level. Her first solo album, 'Ekhidna'? (2020), received a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy), appeared on several jazz and rock best of the year lists and got her into Downbeat's '25 for the future'? selection.

'Tempest Revisited'? draws lines back to 1998 and the very beginning of Rune Grammofon. This was the year we released 'Electric'?, the collected electronic works of Arne Nordheim, one of Norway's greatest composers. It was also the year when parts of 'The Tempest'?, possibly his most cherished and well-known work, was chosen to be performed at the opening of Parken, the new cultural house in oelesund, birthplace of Hedvig Mollestad.

To celebrate 20 years, the culture house was ready for a new storm, and the first name that came to them was Hedvig, a local artist that was already making waves on the international scene with her power-trio. Hedvig took inspiration from the front of the house, adorned with Nordheim's score for 'The Tempest'?, at the same time making a direct connection to the sometime heavy weather conditions of this coastal area in the northwest part of Norway.

One could say it's a big paradox that over all this might be Hedvig's most lyrical and less aggressive collection of music. On the other hand it's quite a dynamic record, lots of light and shade and enough sonic parts at work to evoke the elements, the mighty Gran Cassa drum only one of them.

The music included here was adapted from the initial performance in 2018 and produced by Hedvig in the studio the following year for this album release.

The musicians included are old friends Marte Eberson from the Ekhidna band, Ivar Loe Bjørnstad from her trio and Trond Frønes (Red Kite) on bass as well as a horn section of three.

Yet another triumph in a more than impressive discography.

Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen is a guitar heroine for our times. Born in the Norwegian town of oelesund in the early 80s, she first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at the age of ten. As an exploratory teenager she dug deep into her father's jazz and rock record collection and translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project.

Then she was given an electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present, and never looked back. But there's nothing pious about her music. Her molten, overdriven guitar sound is forged in the same fiery furnace as Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, then plunged into a steaming vat of free jazz in the Sonny Sharrock/Fred Frith mould.

In tracks like 'The Rex' and 'Lake Acid', you'll hear the megalithic riffology of Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' and 'Rock 'N' Roll', but with an agility and intensity peculiar to the dark Northern regions where she and her bandmates were raised.

Her drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad grew up in a Norwegian hillbilly town where the kids taste moonshine before they've started school. And bassist Ellen Brekken was raised on a farm and is extremely fascinated by trains ' which, given her impeccable timekeeping, seems highly appropriate. 'Now we are kind of married', says Hedvig.

All Of Them Witches follows the Trio's previous Rune Grammofon release, Shoot! (2011) and, like labelmates Elephant9 and Grand General, represent a thrilling new progressive wave of Norwegian avant rock/free metal energy. This latest batch of electrifying instrumentals was recorded live in the island environment of Ocean Sound studio, a grass-roofed wooden barn on the edge of the Norwegian Sea fitted with state of the art equipment, where the Trio could swim in the freezing waters before breakfast and stretch their gaze out to the horizon in mid-take.

It's no surprise that such widescreen surroundings shoul1st d give rise to epic concepts, and the title of first track 'Sing, Goddess' takes its name from the opening line of Homer's Iliad. Inspired by the wide open skies, 'Shawshank' and 'Ghrá Rúnda' are more reflective pieces, bathed in controlled feedback. 'We have named our pieces of music after things we care for, matters we think about, or feelings that we carry,' says Hedvig. 'Some of them are dedicated to people we love, art we like, experiences we have had.

Some of the titles are humorous and with one specific meaning to us, and some are more connected to the title All Of Them Witches, like 'Achilles' and 'Code Of Hammurabi' ' the ancient law that, among other things, describes how witches should be treated.' Witches have historically been victims of persecution, but as Hedvig reminds us, black magicians can also hold the reins of power. 'There is so much change in the world,' she says, 'and this is nothing new for our age. There are always people screwing up, for reasons we don't understand, driving their country and its people over the edge.

Too many people have too little, because a few people need to have much more than enough. Witches now are the state leaders that let their people suffer; witches then were both the ones thrown into the sea by law, and the very ones throwing them.'

With four studio albums under their belts in less than five years this explosive trio have gone from strenght to strenght gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps and receiving vivid praise from the likes of Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke and veteran writer Richard Williams, who started his report from the Berlin Jazz Festival with "a late-night gig last week persuaded me that Hedvig Mollestad Trio have found a way to make headbanging feel good". Although there is enough riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, with "Black Stabat Mater" the trio are venturing into more free and open landscapes with Mollestad truly coming into her own as a solo guitarist as well as a riffmeister previously compared to the likes of Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page. It's also notable that extensive touring has given them a confidence boost, and once again the tracks have been laid down live in the studio with only minor overdubs.

Only nine months after her momentous debut solo album Ekhidna, the guitarist is back fronting her trio. With their previous album, Smells Funny, this explosive and expansive trio experienced a breakthrough of sorts, having gone from strength to strength through five albums since their 2011 debut Shoot!, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps.

With the hypnotic title track, the spacious ballad 'Four Candles'?, and a generally more varied mood, Ding Dong. You're Dead. is the trio's most dynamic album to date.

That said, there's still enough solid and creative riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, as well as the jazzheads, as they further explore the free and open landscapes most notably started with their Black Stabat Mater album and continued with Smells Funny.

As recent performances have shown, online and in the flesh, this trio radiates confidence and have become a surefire hit on the Norwegian live scene. And while we rightly praise Hedvig's exceptional abilities, let's not forget how important the rhythm section is to make it all work so well.

Ellen Brekken is an accomplished bassist, driving the band just as hard on the electric bass as on the acoustic.
Then there's Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, not your regular rock drummer, not your regular jazz drummer, but in possession of just the right amount of loose swagger.

Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke is a certified fan and it's easy to see why.

Double-tracked with a ghostly haze of background fuzz, Hedvig Mollestad's lightning-rod guitar blazes a trail that comes in the wake of the heaviest guitar giants - there's Hendrix and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Led Zep's Jimmy Page swirling around the cauldron, but also the exploratory, disciplined freeplay of Pete Cosey, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana buzzing out of her fingertips.

Together with drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad and bassist Ellen Brekken, her Trio capture the full force of heavy rock and electric jazz and turn it to demonic purposes.

It can be sledgehammer sludge, stoned to a crawl as on Arigato, Bitch'. Or it's nimble as a phantom on Rastapopoulos', a dizzying churn that's named after the archvillain of Hergé's Tintin cartoons. And for the Mollestad Trio at its intuitive, ESP-connected finest, check Liquid Bridges'.

With "Smells Funny" being their sixth album in seven years, this explosive and expansive trio have gone from strength to strength, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortabel in jazz and rock clubs.  The new album sees Mollestad truly coming into her own as an amazing lead guitarist as well as a dependable riffmeister.

The last ten years have seen a thrilling new progessive wave of Norwegian avant jazz'n'rock and free metal energy combos like labelmates Elephant9, Bushman's Revenge, Krokofant and Motorpsycho - especially in the form of their Roadwork live albums. And let us not forget the mighty Scorch Trio - led by Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim - who can be said to have started it all some 15 years ago.

But it could very well be Hedvig Mollestad Trio that defines it all with their ability to turn the full force of heavy rock and electric jazz to demonic purposes. Hedvig first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father's jazz and rock record collection as a teenager.

She translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project and was given her first electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present. The members of the trio are from the districts, but Hedvig met Ellen Brekken and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad at the Music Academy in Oslo. Hedvig asked them to join her after she received the Jazz Talent Of The Year Award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009.

Neither a jazz album nor your typical melancholy Nordic singer songwriter album, let's say it's pop music with a twist, quite a few twists come to think of it, inviting the listener to a dramatic, beautiful, mysterious, seductive, dark, intricate and quite simply different sounding and fascinating musical ride.

The second album from the duo that is Thomas Strønen (Food) and Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent), now simply calling themselves Humcrush, after the title of their debut from 2004.

Hornswoggle is an alltogether more developed, varied and subtle collection of tracks, going from downright funky to abstract grooves from Thomas while Ståle is in his most melodic and atmospheric mood. Comparable to Supersilent's most structured and accesible moments, this is an excellent addition to the catalogue.

Ha! is the fourth Humcrush album, this time with the most welcome addition of singer Sidsel Endresen. Having toured together for a couple of years, they finally recorded some shows last year.

This album was beautifully recorded in concert at Willisau Jazzfestival and is a great example of the duo's seamless interaction as well as Endresen's ability to improvise, listen, react, adapt and surprise, fully showing that we are dealing with one of the world's leading vocal improvisors, coming from years of experience from solo work and collaborations with musicians like Bugge Wesseltoft, Helge Sten, Christian Wallumrød, Rolf Wallin, Jan Bang, Håkon Kornstad and Stian Westerhus.

And Humcrush is still Ståle Storløkken (keyboards) and Thomas Strønen (drums and electronics).
