Born on June 3, 1956, in Houlton, Maine, under the name Daniel Thomas, Danny Wilde moved with his family to California at a young age. He grew up immersed in West Coast music culture and was influenced by iconic artists such as Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and the Everly Brothers. He began learning guitar at the age of eight, and during his teenage years, he played in several local bands around Los Angeles, where he developed his songwriting and vocal skills.
In the mid-1970s, Wilde launched his professional music career by joining The Quick, a Los Angeles-based power-pop band known for its energetic sound and theatrical performances. The band released the album Mondo Deco in 1976. Although The Quick did not achieve mainstream success, it built a cult following and helped establish Wilde within the local music scene.
In the early 1980s, Wilde formed Great Buildings with fellow musician Phil Solem. The duo signed with Columbia Records and released the album Apart From the Crowd in 1981. The album received positive reviews for its catchy melodies and polished production. Despite the favorable critical reception, Great Buildings disbanded in 1982, prompting Wilde to pursue a solo career.
Between 1986 and 1989, Danny Wilde released several solo albums. He first signed with Island Records and released The Boyfriend in 1986, with the single Isn’t It Enough bringing him moderate recognition. In 1988, he moved to Geffen Records and released Any Man’s Hunger, which included the song Time Runs Wild, gaining wider attention after being featured in the film Dream a Little Dream.
His third solo album, Danny Wilde (1989), was critically appreciated but remained more of a cult success than a commercial breakthrough. Finally, in 1989, Wilde reunited with Phil Solem to form The Rembrandts. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1990, featured the hit single Just the Way It Is, Baby, which became a major international success and marked the commercial peak of Danny Wilde’s career.
