    Kuedo 'Slow Knife'

It's been five years since his acclaimed debut Severant'and time has proved it prescient; its futuristic trap influence is now ubiquitous. Slow Knife seems to return to where Severant'left off, but with the intricate sound design of last year's haunting EP Assertion Of A Surrounding Presence'subsumed into the compositions, making them more exacting and beautifully crafted.

Between albums Kuedo has been working as a sound designer and composer for hire and the application of intent and widescreen rigour that commercial work requires has definitely found its way into the new album. Slow Knife'has the subtlety, ambition and pacing of a brilliant soundtrack - a sense of an album of scenes, that easily lends itself to an impressionistic narrative. But, as with Severant', the title suggests relationship unease, with the slow knife being a metaphor for the building resentment in any close relationship.

Slow Knife'is almost two albums; the first half, according to Kuedo, invokes the seduction of the city, taking the music of Michael Mann's Manhunter'as a cue, with the latter half being inspired by the bloody starscapes and voodoo wilderness of films such as Angel Heart', Night Of The Hunter'and more recently the True Detective'series.

Both halves of the album are also in thrall to Mica Levi's inspiring Under The Skin'soundtrack, especially in the turbulence of the mid-section. The songs of the albums first half are synthetic and seductive, a gelatinous veil with shades of the pseudo-sophisticated trance of Enigma, of all things, underpinned with dusky unsettling shadows and atmosphere.

In Your Sleep', perhaps surprisingly, features the vocals of Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts, who settles his dark, whispered vocals into the moonlit shadowy atmosphere. Floating Forest'is the first track to allow back some of Kuedo's experimentation with the Southern rap template, which he explored before it became commonplace, with echoed drum splashes and a sinister repetitive motif, ending with a haunting growl.

The second half of the album enters wilderness territory with Approaching's slow descending notes, before Broken Fox - Black Hole'throws the record into the cathartic darkness, as undulating chords play hide and seek with riotous reeds and scratchy strings grown from challenging collaborations with cello player Koenraad Ecker (from Lumisokea).

Breaking The Surface'shivers and coils, before metal and strings dominate while In Your Skin'feels like being lost in a vast hinterland before Warmer Light'introduces some memories of sunshine, with its plucked bassline and spiralling dub. Halogen Light'opens with the sound of crickets and a clear piano, cleansing the soul before Lathe'brings things down to earth with a short, yet powerful coda.

Something wicked this way comes. Something dark, menacing, fathomless. Shadows within shadows. Electricity from other planets. This is the heavy weather sound of Minibus Pimps: a perfect storm of crystalline chimes, low end rumbles and slow-blowing galactic hurricanes.

Minibus Pimps is a duo featuring John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin's legendary multi-instrumentalist), and prolific electronic musician, improviser and producer Helge Sten (Deathprod, Supersilent), which has existed since its first performance in 2011. This unique and unconventional UK/Norwegian collaboration is named after a track discovered on a compilation of Chinese experimental music (a street recording of people who work the crowd to fill taxis in Beijing).

The debut album Cloud To Ground contains seven tracks all recorded live at different venues, from London's Café Oto to venues in Norway and Denmark. The secret of Minibus Pimps'colossal sonic gas giants is their use of the Kyma computer system (created by Symbolic Sound). Instruments such as guitar, bass and violin are fed into the system and radically transformed by self-designed digital instruments and processors until their sources are barely recognisable.

I would say that the music contains composed and improvisational elements on an equal scale,'says Helge Sten of the pieces on Cloud To Ground. With titles referencing what scientists call remarkable luminous phenomena in nature', the tracks are scintillating exercises in bending timbres and refracting sound signals. Black Aurora'is an electronic suite in four movements, pulsing and hovering like some collapsing dark star. The title track is a monstrous duet for icicles and cathedral organ, and the other pieces are masses of sound and noise explored in different densities.

A prolific session musician in the 1960s, John played, arranged and recorded with artists including Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, The Rolling StonesJeff Beck, Françoise Hardy and many others until co-founding Led Zeppelin with Jimmy Page in late 1967.

Following Led Zeppelin's unparalleled career he has collaborated, produced and arranged for a range of artists including Diamanda Galás, REM, Foo Fighters, Peter Gabriel, Merce Cunningham and many more. In 2009, he formed Them Crooked Vultures'with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. He is currently writing an opera based on The Ghost Sonata by August Strindberg.

Helge Sten has been making electronic music since the early 90s, both under the name Deathprod and, since 1997, as one of the improvising group Supersilent. One of Norway's most innovative and uncompromising artists, his audio virus'has spread across the music of many collaborators including Motorpsycho, Susanna, Biosphere and more. Supersilent first teamed up with John Paul Jones at the Punkt festival in Kristiansand in 2010, a fruitful meeting that eventually spawned Minibus Pimps.

Cloud To Ground is a giant step by two fearless sonic cosmonauts.

Highly acclaimed and recommended album from Susanna.

Susanna's first soloalbum since 2012, and her eleventh album in total, is a mastodont of a singer/songwriter release. Near 70 minutes of intensely expressive, deeply felt and spiritually probing lyrics, presented and performed in layers of voice, electronics, effects and programming together with instruments as piano, violin and tuba.

The artist known for  personal interpretations of songs by Joy Division, Leonard Cohen and AC/DC among others but also her strong originals , has dissected her own musical expression, collaborations and projects, and put the pieces together again creating a unique and diverse world for her songs.

Triangle'is composed, arranged, played, recorded and produced by Susanna. Musicians from Norwegian bands like Supersilent, Broen, Moskus, Splashgirl and Sudan Dudan participated alongside americans Alison Chesley (Helen Money) and Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang).

Even in this golden age for female singer-songwriters, Susanna stands out. Her vocal has become ever more versatile and fluid, recalling at times Kate Bush, the Laurel Canyon balladry of Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro, or the acrobatics of the Cocteau Twins'Liz Fraser. But it's always recognisably her own: calm and determined in the face of enormous forces and looming fears.

On the terrifying This / Phenomena'it's distorted into a digital mush, while on We Don't Belong'it's multitracked to a lush and enveloping chorus. Muted electro track Hole'features Anja Lauvdal and Heida Mobeck from rising art pop group Broen besides Skrap, Skadedyr and Moskus  - not since Prince in the mid-80s has an existential religious crisis been so beautifully expressed with the tools of electronic pop.

Triangle is soul music for lost souls.

Susanna And Ensemble neoN 'The Forester'

    £12.99

The CD comes with a 8 pages booklet, and the LP is cut from the original 24/96 masters on 180 gr vinyl.

Barely one year after the Rune Grammofon-release of critically acclaimed 'Wild Dog', Susanna returns with a new album. Released on her own label SusannaSonata on CD, vinyl and download in September 2013.

Susanna is known for both her own songwriting, with songs such as Believer'and her huge range of highly personal interpretations of other people's songs. She is an intensely arresting performer; holding audiences captive with her hypnotizing vocal timbre and the powerful, all consuming sound of her band, her concerts are truly magical.

Active for more than a decade, through eight albums so far asSusanna and the Magical Orchestra/Susanna/Susanna Wallumrød, the Oslo based artist has recently been taking great steps towards greater independence and autonomy, while increasing the range of her considerable talents as a songwriter, vocal interpreter and producer.

Combining the antique notes of the Baroque theorbo, woodwinds and strings, and Susanna's sparse piano, The Forester' - a co-production with the Norwegian Ensemble neoN - features Susanna's strongest songwriting to date.

The Forester'began to take shape when composers Julian Skar and Jan Martin Smørdal requested some material from her to arrange for the Norwegian contemporary music group Ensemble neoN. Picking from new tracks and several already released songs, the composers made new arrangements suited to the eight-piece group, and extended the title track into a fifteen-minute, three-part suite in which dark woods shroud a wanderer in a symbolic landscape of searching and loss. Being lost, or deliberately straying from the chosen path, are recurring themes on The Forester', whose subject matter ranges from disturbing natural environments to alien visitors, painted on an eerily exquisite canvas that recalls Mark Hollis, Tim Buckley, Kate Bush and Claude Debussy while remaining uniquely Susanna's soundworld.

Recorded entirely live in one single, emotionally intense day at Oslo's legendary Rainbow Studio, produced by Deathprod and Susanna and engineered by Jan Erik Kongshaug.

    Memetune

    Wrangler 'White Glue'

    £18.99

Wrangler's White Glue features new nine new tracks, recorded with the 3-D depth of analogue (the ancient synthesizers in Benge's MemeTune Studios have never sounded so good) but there's less geek and more funk; more Mod than Modular in the new album's tailored, minimalist design. Stephen Mallinder's vocals are a surreal joy, smeared with effects and electronics as they change, chant and shift around the jump-cut lyrics.

The opening trio of Alpha Omega', Stupid'(Mallinder in a new mutant funk-falsetto) and Clockwork'(a nod to Kraftwerk who famously name-checked Cabaret Voltaire as brothers in popular electronic music') sets up White Glue with the crisp crack and thud of sequenced rhythms and lush synthesizers.

Dirty'starts like something from Forbidden Planet, pauses for a moment and then slams into a compelling funk beat with a bristling guitar riff courtesy of Julie Campbell (LoneLady). Mallinder delivers one of the most memorable vocals of his career - venting, sliding and punching through the layers of noise with real urgency and bile.

He employs his voice-instrument to more measured effect on Stop'but it's no less hypnotic - a feverish guilt-mantra of out-of-control consumerism: Stop spending money that you don't have/Stop buying shit that you don't need.'As the synths wail like sirens, you can picture Winter and Benge swaying to the beats, heads-down, lost in the propulsive, (artificial) hand-clapping groove.

The white-light-techno-rush, triggered synths and chopped-up, multi-layered vocals of Real Life' - surely deserving of its own 12 inch vinyl release at some point - is followed by Days'which slowly loops in and then flicks off the safety catch with heavy bass and moody synth lines.

Mallinder offers another striking vocal which seems to self-describe his own writing methods - moving pictures come in flashes.'Superset'is a late highlight as the band coax the rhythm into life before hitting hard with a lovely, deep groove. Colliding'is the spacey Krautrock closer, a beautiful, nuanced semi-instrumental song which exits with dreamy, abstract vocoder sounds and ambient synths.

'Superseeder marks a return to the sort of extended raga-like acid rock workout that typified early Bevis Frond releases.. the whole album is excellent.' Allmusic

Released on Nick Saloman's label Woronzow in 1995, The Bevis Frond's Superseeder'arrived after Sprawl'.

At this point, Nick began releasing albums annually compared with his earlier recordings that would see multiple releases per year. Soaring and melodic rock workouts prevail with a notably strong rhythm section making this record another favourite.

Eastern tinged opener Superseded', I Can't Cry'and 17-minute House Of Mountains'are exemplary workouts whilst the garage-punk of Dolly Bug'takes a different tone as do Golden Walks Of London'and Queen Of May'which have more traditional British influences.

  • Explosions In The Sky & David Wingo 'Manglehorn: An Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' - Cargo Records UK

Explosions In The Sky & David Wingo 'Manglehorn: An Original Motion Picture Soundtrack'

    £11.99

Major motion picture score for new David Gordon Green movie starring Al Pacino & Holly Hunter

The vinyl format for Manglehorn is limited to 2,500 copies, pressed onto 100% virgin black vinyl, and packaged in a deluxe screen printed jacket w/ full-colour, heavyweight inner sleeve. Following their inspired collaboration for Prince Avalanche ' the understated, underrated 2013 film directed by David Gordon Green ' iconic experimental rock band, Explosions In The Sky, and renowned film composer David Wingo return with the score to another Green film, Manglehorn.

Written by long time friend, Paul Logan ' and starring Al Pacino and Holly Hunter ' Manglehorn is beautifully crafted and steeped in symbolism. The performances are subtle and charming, the scenery is eclectic, and the cinematography is strikingly beautiful.

The soundtrack reflects that same spirit, shaping abstract sounds into playful and poignant score. With barely a hint of guitar on the entire soundtrack, Explosions In The Sky forego the primary instrument in which their stirring scores for Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor were built upon, opting to harness that same emotional resonance from an array of percussive instruments.

David Wingo brings the same mercurial magic to Manglehorn that made his scores to Mud and Take Shelter so profoundly affecting. EITS and Wingo are inspired collaborators, composers whose music is so perfectly suited to the soundtrack format that listening to them makes your own life feel like a film unfolding in front of your eyes. In Manglehorn, it backs the story of an old man coming to terms with his past and slowly resolving his deep-seated anger and discontent.

It could just as effectively add a sense of wonder and grandeur to your commute to work, impromptu road trip, or lazy Sunday stroll.

Scandinavian psych-rock outfit The Wands pinned themselves at the forefront of the European psych stage long ago with their previous efforts but the new Faces EP is certain to keep them sitting there comfortably.

Dining on an influence of Nuggets-era rock and roll and Eastern acid-rock this is psychedelic music as it should be, underpinned by a nostalgic yearning but wholly innovative and equally addictive.

Their latest cut is a much more dynamic and vivid effort and it's immediately evident that The Wands are back with a clearer vision than ever with their vibrant and infectious psych.

Whilst the groovy fuzzed-out guitars, otherworldly solos and tremulous vocals still echo a tripped out ode to the 60s and 70s psychedelic forefathers, the cosmic swell of synths and organs propel it with a contemporary and ethereal vigour.

Legendary, once lost third album! 14 tracks.

Dubs of the band's third album, which had been mysteriously unaccounted for, were found in a cardboard box in drummer Danny Taylor's attic.

The remarkable reunion of the original duo of Simeon and Taylor hadn't been planned. After 27 years apart, they were reunited when a disc jockey at New Jersey's legendary WFMU radio station received a phone call from Taylor for the station's pledge drive.

Taylor had been out of the music business for years, and his call put the pieces in place for Simeon, who was known at WFMU, to forge a renewed excitement for the Silver Apples' earliest recordings.

The recordings included seven complete songs from 1969 and seven drum instrumentals by in 1968. Taylor's 1968 drumming demos were blended with Simeon Coxe's 1998 "Noodle" efforts. ALLMUSIC

SILVER APPLES new album, 'Clinging to a Dream', the first in 19 years, features 11 new songs and was recorded at the ChickenCoop studios in Fairhope, Alabama, USA and was produced by Graham Sutton in London, UK. These new songs carry on the tradition begun in 1967 by Silver Apples of merging pure, raw electronic sounds with melodic poetic content and represents 40 years of polishing and refining this experiment.

The result, as usual, is surprisingly original. ChickenCoop Recordings is Silver Apples own imprint, the same name given to the backyard studio in Alabama by Simeon Coxe, founder and surviving member of Silver Apples.

The new album release on ChickenCoop, is part of a larger worldwide deal with Cargo Records, which sees back catalogue titles, 'The Garden', 'Beacon' and 'Decatur' re-issued on all formats, with Beacon and Decatur for the first time ever available on vinyl and digital download.

The Garden was the once legendary, lost', third album that luckily turned up in 1998 during the reunion of Simeon and Danny Taylor, who at the time hadn't seen each other for 27 years! The story appears on the sleeve artwork.

First released on the now defunct, Whirlybird', label in '98 (CD only) then on now defunct Canadian label, Bully Records', in 2006. Beacon was, the come back album in 1997 and was recorded with Steve Albini. It's what Simeon now refers to as the trio days', as Simeon initially recruited Xian Hawkins (keyboards) and Michael Lerner (drums) for the reactivation of Silver Apples.

Decatur was also released in 1998 on the back of Beacon and is, as the sleeve notes say, A voyage of pure exploration beyond the broad established horizons of electronic music. It is an adventure into the perceptions of an unparallel universe all it's own'.

In a culture obsessed with content, saturation, and continual exposure, it's rare to find artists who prefer to lurk outside of the public eye. Thomas Pynchon is perhaps the most notable contemporary recluse'a virtually faceless figure who occasionally creeps out of hiding to offer up an elaborate novel steeped in history and warped by imagination'but for the crate digging audiophiles, guitar mystics, and third-eye visionaries, Sweden's enigmatic rock outfit GOAT may qualify as the greatest modern pop-culture mystery. Who are these masked musicians? Are they truly members of a remote tribe in the Arctic community of Korpilombolo? Are their songs actually a part of their communal heritage, passed down through generations in their isolated homeland? Their third studio full-length, Requiem, offers more questions than answers, but much like any of Pynchon's knotty yarns, the reward is not in the untangling but in the journey through the labyrinth.

Western exports may have dominated the consciousness of international rock fans for the entirety of the 20th century, but our increasing global awareness has unearthed a treasure trove of transcendental grooves and spellbinding riffage from exotic and remote corners of the planet. GOAT's previous albums World Music and Commune were perfect testaments to this heightened awareness, with Silk Road psychedelia, desert blues, and Third World pop all serving as governing forces within the band's sound. But GOAT's strange amalgam isn't some cheap game of cultural appropriation'it's nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact origins of the elusive group's sound. Whether or not the enigmatic collective truly claims Korpilombolo as their home, the fact that they pledge allegiance to a spot on the periphery of our maps'a spot so distant and off the grid that it feels fictitious'bolsters the nomadic quality of their sonic explorations. With Requiem, GOAT continue to rock and writhe to a beat beholden to no nation, no state.

GOAT's only outright declaration for Requiem is that it is their 'folk' album. For the initiated, such a proclamation seems almost unnecessary'GOAT has always vacillated between electrified exuberance and unplugged tribalist hymns. But Requiem does find GOAT focusing more on their subdued bucolic ritualism than on the psilocybin freakouts. Opening tracks 'Djorolen/Union of Sun and Moon' and 'I Sing in Silence' both set the stage for GOAT's rustic approach, with the guitars laying down simple chord progressions and pan flute providing the primary hooks. From those very first notes, the piper leads us down a path where GOAT relies less on acidic guitar lines and more on sun-bleached psych-pop. 'Trouble in the Streets' carries all the jubilance of classic African highlife. 'Try My Robe' bares the group's signature ceremonial hip-shaking rhythms, but eschews guitar for a mandolin line that would make John Paul Jones proud. But GOAT hasn't completely foregone their fiery charms'tracks like 'All-Seeing Eye' and 'Goatfuzz' conjure the sultry heathen pulsations that ensnared us on their previous albums.

Perhaps the most puzzling aspect of Requiem comes with the closing track 'Ubuntu'. The song is little more than a melodic delay-driven electric piano line, until we hear the refrain from 'Diarabi''the first song on their first album'sneak into the mix. It creates a kind of musical ouroboros'an infinite cycle of reflection and rejuvenation, death and rebirth. Much like fellow recluse Pynchon, GOAT doesn't offer up any explanations for their strange trajectories. But like Pynchon, they have managed to create a world of their own where the line between truth and fiction is so obscured that all you can do is bask in their cryptic genius.

ZIÚR is a female Berlin-based producer and she's bringing some future club industrial vibes to Objects with her Deeform EP.

In 2015 she started BOO HOO', a night dedicated to the queer community, along side Joey Hansom.

Bookings are inclusive, having female identifying and people of colour on the bill with a core friendly and accepting space for people to party. Ziúr first made stirs when she remixed Peaches 'How You Like My Cut" from the totally NSFW but incredibly fun Rub'LP. She then Exploded on to the scene with her debut club vibe Taiga EP on Infinite Machine earlier this year.

Ziúr has come a long way from her experimental noisy punk band Sissters'. Punk vibes still run through the dark and bass-heavy sound of Deeform EP though. Her use of environmental noises, dogs barking and the like, are evocative of cityscapes and dimming lighting when the streets meet dusk. 'My testing ground [for my own music] is when I work at a venue and I do a sound check,' she explains. 'If people freak out, then I know that it's a good track.'
