The first thing that hits you is the voice. Alex Lipinski's caressing sympathy, full-throated resentment, and the raw rockabilly excitement of earliest Elvis have grabbed unwary listeners from the West Country to Krakow, Berlin and New York, since he first left Somerset to become a crucial habitué of Soho's legendary, lost 12-Bar Club.

He has followed in the footsteps of his hero Dylan to write in the Chelsea Hotel, and sung Elvis songs in the home of an admiring Liam Gallagher, who responded with a roaring 'Acquiesce'.

With older brother and fellow musician Adam Lipinski by his side at Newcombe's residential studio in Berlin, Alex'basically took six hours. 'Anton put a lot of time and energy in. I recorded with an old guitar, because he wanted to capture the effortless, timeless 60s records that he had in his mind. We had initially planned to be in the studio for three or four nights.

The first evening we rattled though the songs, a take or two of each and in those six hours everything clicked. By midnight we were done. We ended the evening by going to a great bar called 8mm.

Anton set up a gig there the following night and played old folk records, then we played a live set. We added small overdubs on the record later. But the album captures the character of the songs live with no frills. The slight imperfections add to the feel. Anton taught me about perfect mistakes.'

Birdstriking and the other bands coming out of China right now are enthusiastic to explore and find out what's their own music. And so that's a new energy in the same way that rock 'n' roll was new'young people finding their youth culture and expression," says A Recordings founder and Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe.

Like Joy Division forming at a Sex Pistols gig a couple of generations before, Birdstriking was born when guitarist He Fan and drummer Wang Xinjiu met at a Carsick Cars show at Beijing's legendary, now-shuttered rock club D-22. From Birdstriking's first time on that same stage in 2009, the band quickly established itself on the Beijing indie rock scene, becoming one of the leaders of a new generation of rockers born after 1990, growing when China was fully open to the West and now as likely to cite as influences homegrown talent like Carsick Cars and P.K. 14 as imported music like Nirvana and Joy Division.

Birdstriking's relentless live shows masterfully blend tuneful hooks, calculated psych-noise meltdowns, precision rhythmic structure, and brash lyrical frankness. He Fan's impassioned wails are youthful and politically angled, as on 'Monkey Snake', when he chokes out, 'You can control the media, but you can't control my mind.' In fact, the band's charged lyrics mean their debut album, released in 2012 on local label Maybe Mars and produced by P.K. 14's Yang Haisong, was never officially distributed in China.

In 2011, CNN named Birdstriking one of the best young bands in China, and last year the band opened for the Brian Jonestown Massacre in the UK and headlined Hong Kong's Clockenflap festival.

The Blue Angel Lounge sign to Anton Newcombe's (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) label 'A' Recordings (Dirty Beaches, Dead Skeletons, KVB) 2014 sees the return of The Blue Angel Lounge with their 3rd studio album A Sea Of Trees, released on May 2nd. Since the release of their previous album 'Narcotica', the band have been garnering international acclaim, touring the US, UK and France with the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and also making appearances at the Austin Psych Fest and Roskilde.

A Sea Of Trees sees the band blossom into its own, incorporating the experimentation of their most recent EP and Single releases (Ewig 2012, Walls 2013).From the very first moment of 'A Sea Of Trees', the epic opening track'Winter' wastes no time sonically detailing where the band has been. The bands weapons of choice, guitars coupled with harmonium and singer Nils Ottensmeyer's powerful Nico'esque vocals culminate in genre-bending territory belonging to them alone.

The album marks the bands first worldwide release via Anton Newcombe's (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) 'A' Recording label. Mr. Newcombe joined The Blue Angel Lounge on stage in support of their last record, and most recently invited them to support them on The Brian Jonestown Massacre's 2012 American tour to rave reviews. The Blue Angel Lounge formed in 2006, after meeting at school in their German village Hohenlimburg near the Rhine River. Led by singer Nils O. Ottensmeyer and Dennis Melster, the band took their name from the club in New York City that in the 1960's offered Nico her first live performances in America. Nico and The Velvet Underground would remain an underlying influence on the band.

'A Sea Of Trees' was recorded between 2013 and 2014 at Funkhaus-studio and Studio H1-3 Nalepastrasse, Berlin. Mixed at A Recordings Studio, Berlin. Produced, recorded and mixed by Fabien Leseure and The Blue Angel Lounge.

A trans-pacific nomad and genre hopping sound smith, his past releases include: drone instrumentals, films scores, and his fascination with dissecting popular american music like blues, rockabilly, soul, RNB, and hip hop, often rendering them to the point where its no longer recognizable.

His latest release WATERPARK is a film score written for Director Evan Prosofsky's same titled film, and explores the neutral element of sound in a massive indoor water park located in west Edmonton Mall, in the province of Alberta. A vacation home to countless stranded Canadians with no vacation in sight.

The instrumentation of oscillators, heavily reverberated strings, mellotron/chamberlain, and experimental electric guitar sets the mood for this bizarre plastic tropical paradise thats within a shopping mall.

Gunman and the Holy Ghost  is another music project created by Hákon Aðalsteinsson (The Third Sound).  The songs were written in Berlin during the coldest months of the winter then recorded and mixed next spring time. Now available on 180 gram vinyl.

From a review by JJ Baker: When I started listening to Gunman & The Holy Ghost it actually made me laugh. Such misery! This is melancholy with gristle! This album is barefaced in it's misery-it doesn't resist it, it uses it.

Song titles like I Don't Believe In Love Anymore and Oh Lord, Let Me Die In Pain are pretty good indication of what we're in for here, though there's great variation on this deliciously dark album. Opener The Eight To Five Train To Nothing snared me right in the lip and I was willfully dragged up through that ink black water and onto the good ship Gunman.

A relatively upbeat tune, it has some sad, sad lyrics:I would want you here but you're nowhere near so I just keep steaming on; Into the wilderness and unhappiness right back where I came from Lines like this are so damn dark, they bring a smile to my face¦

This is the debut album release from L'Epée , the band are Emmanuelle Seigner (Ultra Orange & Emmanuelle), Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) & Lionel & Marie Liminana (The Liminanas) . It is very rarely that a musical project lives up to the billing of being a supergroup'. However, the exception to this rule comes in the shape of L'épée.

A stellar combination of the talents of The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe, cinematic femme fatale Emmanuelle Seigner and ice-cool pop provocateurs The Liminanas (Lionel and Marie Liminana), L'épée transcend artistic and traditional borders.

'We are living in very culturally insular times, so it feels really good to be swimming against the tide,' says Anton of the band's bi-lingual, cross-continental approach.'There's something really positive about branching out, collaborating and taking risks.' Far from being defeated by a world seemingly regressing into turmoil, L'Epée's strength comes from a long history of challenging the status quo.

From Anton's legendary battles with The Man'with The Brian Jonestown Massacre to Emmanuelle's eclectic screen career to The Liminana's community-minded ethos- setting up their own record shop, L.G.D.C, and promoting gigs by the cream of the world's garage rock scene (New Bomb Turks, Oblivians, Fleshtones, Revelators) -they share a fierce intelligence and an outsider aesthetic which, over the decades, has been sharpened to a razor's edge.

Fitting, then, that their name translates as The Sword. 'It came to me in a dream,' explains Anton. 'I woke up and there it was, The Sword'. Someone told me there had already been a band with that name so I flipped it into French. It suits the band because we're united in a common cause.' This pent-up creative energy has been channelled into their extraordinary debut album, Diabolique. Named in tribute to Mario Bava's 1968 cult classic Danger: Diabolik', it's a musical masterclass where elements of garage, ye-ye, sleaze rock, cult soundtracks, sci-fi, spaghetti westerns and girl-group pop noir are combined with the cut-and-thrust zeal of a band bursting with ideas and energy.

All delivered by Emmanuelle in a sultry Gallic drawl which will send a frisson of recognition through anyone familiar with her iconic roles in, among many others, Frantic, Venus In Fur and Bitter Moon (all directed by her husband, Roman Polanski). 'I've loved rock music since I was a kid,' she says, namechecking Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground and The Stooges as key influences.
'I always wanted to be a musician, but it wasn't so easy in France as I couldn't meet the right people. Then I became a model and then very quickly after that I did Frantic and became an actress. It worked for me, but in my heart I always wanted to do music.'

Having asked close friend Bertrand Belin to provide lyrics for three further tracks (Grande', On Dansait Avec Elle'and Lou'), the trio set to work at The Liminanas'studio in Cabestany, Southern France, in November 2017 -with Emmanuelle, ever the perfectionist, fine-tuning them the following February.

Satisfied with the results, the trio flew to Berlin to hook up with Anton and (Liverpudlian engineer) Andrea Wright at his Cobra Studio in Berlin Utilising a treasure trove of vintage equipment ('I've got way more 60's gear than The Beatles and The Stones had, I'm mad for that stuff', explains the BJM man), Anton set to work, re-recording the drums with Marie and adding -and deleting- tracks so that the shifting layers of sound suited the mood of each individual track.

'I've got plenty of other ways to express myself, so I really enjoyed taking a backseat, creatively,' he explains. 'Lionel is such a great composer. There's a very visual sense to his songs and I was very conscious of not stepping on his intentions too much. There were some really interesting sonic things I would add, like a track of the craziest feedback, to give a song a weird ambient quality. It's the role that Brian Jones had in the Stones, or Warren (Ellis) has in Nick Cave's band. Musically, they're all over the map, but they make things happen.'

'It was so inspiring to see Anton work,' says Emmanuelle of seeing him in action.
'When we sent the songs to him they were good, but they were nothing like how it ended up. He's so talented, like a genius. He made the whole thing darker, more interesting and more psychedelic.'

After 2014 which saw the band supporting Goat & the Brian Jonestown Massacre on their European tours .

This 4 track EP runs at over 24 minutes .

Their new EP is Stockholm Death Star which is recorded in the band's own studio in Sweden's capital and consists of four new tracks. Those of you who are already familiar with the group will probably recognize their trippy spacerock over pulsating motorik beats from their earlier releases, and their feel for melodies is still very much present in the four songs.

Produced by the bands guitarist, singer and main songwriter during the dark months of the Scandinavian winter, the music still has an ethereal light glimmering through the blissfully stoned vocal harmonies and chiming twelve string guitar riffs. " If you live in a dark and cold city covered in snow and the times around you are dark as well, you have to look extra hard and try to find a little spark of light inside yourself" as Joakim æhlund puts it.

Three of the tracks have that typical almost danceable groove that we have come to expect from this band and there's even a sort of ballad ending the EP, the almost dubby, seven and a half minutes long, spaced out "Vapour RIP", which though its rather dark lyrics deal with a misspent life and futile regrets, ends in an uplifting almost religious crescendo with fuzz guitars and mellotron strings.

February 2014 saw the band release their Back To Bagarmossen EP on London/Stockholm indie label PNKSLM Recordings. The 10 vinyl received huge praise both internationally and at home, even picking up mainstream TV coverage on  Sweden's TV4.

Following the EP, Les Big Byrd unleashed their debut full length release, They Worshipped Cats, on Anton Newcombe's A Records, Anton has co written & plays 2 tracks on the album, they are supporting the Brian Jonestown Massacre on their European tour.

When Anton recently visited Stockholm with his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the guys accidentally ran into each other at a local record shop, and started talking about music. Anton invited the band down to his studio in Berlin to record and jam for a few days and it was there that a big part of "They Worshipped Cats" was conceived and recorded. The album is filled with beautifully melancholic melodies, poems of time-space continuum read through vocoders, cosmic clouds of filtered stringmachines, motorik krautrock drums, 12-string .

Les Big Byrd was formed in Stockholm by Joakim oehlund and Frans Johansson a couple of years ago.
Joakim was brought up in the late seventies by an immigrant mom in Bagarmossen, a Stockholm suburb where kids sniffed glue in the concrete basements, and the local smalltime gangsters did drive-by's long before Sweden even knew what the phrase meant. At the same time, Frans grew up in the very north of Sweden in a small town with 9 months of winter and darkness every year.

They each eventually joined different rock bands that brought them out of Sweden and into a different world, and took them across Japan, England, Europe and America. Frans' band Fireside, got signed by Rick Rubin to his label Def American and Jocke had a taste of international success with 60's-influenced garage-pop outfit Caesars, as well as his other, more electronically flavored project Teddybears.

Years later, Frans and Jocke met up again after both Caesars and Fireside had crashed and burned due to drug-fueled intrigues, road-weariness, bad management or complete lack thereof.

They decided that they still - in spite of everything - had their love for music intact, and the dream in common to get the perfect band together and give it one more shot. They recruited Jocke's former bandmate, drummer Nino Keller and keyboardist Konie and started jamming and rehearsing.

Joakim had been running a recording studio in Stockholm, writing and producing for Swedish and international artists, including Robyn and Håkan Hellström, and had also directed music videos for prominent Swedish exports such as Bob Hund, Refused, Broder Daniel and The International Noise Conspiracy. Keyboardist Konie also runs a studio in Stockholm, where he's been recording a number of film scores as well as many of Swedens most interesting black metal acts.

Formed in August 2015, the band has kept their shit together enough to have shared the stage with a bunch of talents including Kadavar, The Underground Youth, and Die Nerven, to name a few.

They also self-released a four track EP on cassette in 2016, this is their debut album coming out on 'A' recordings . Like a drunken driver, LeVent swerves up over the curb, drives straight through the garage and total their ride somewhere out in a goat farm.

Bleating at it's most danceable, they carry listeners far away to get lost in nice nonsense, stuck in heavy forgetting, and transfixed on what was, leaving you thirsty for more.

Heike from the band says 'When someone comes up to you after a concert saying, - žI'm going to make you a record' you are stoked for the moment, but you don't reckon it will happen... Half a year later Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre called LeVent in to his Cobra Studio in Berlin.

On hearing the tracks Anton quickly asked the band to sign to his label which they did in 2011.

Magic Castles are a band from Minneapolis Minnesota that was abruptly formed in 2006 by Jason Edmonds, with the help of guitar-ace Jeremiah Doering and a rotating cast of players and friends.

Lyrically concerned with trolls, golden birds, and other creatures conjured from the lands of the mushroomed mind, the band takes a journey-is-better-than-the destination approach.

Inspired by Spacemen 3, Skygreen Leopards, Galaxie 500, the band combines warm Farfisa drones with hazy guitars and bright vocal harmonies to create something similar without sounding redundant.

Magic Castles are a five-piece psychedelic rock band from Minneapolis MN. Their sound has been described as minimalistic, dream pop & neo-psychedelic rock. Drawing from a myriad of influences, combining the hazy, "floaty" atmospherics of bands like Spacemen 3 and Galaxie 500, with the organ-drenched psych of the mid/late 60's--particularly American west coast folk-rock, Magic Castles continue to create an altogether unique sound.

Since their 2012 release on Anton Newcombe's imprint they have toured consistently, building a solid reputation for wall-of-sound live shows, stretching out their songs to new dimensions. The Magic Castles were the supporting act for BJM's east coast tour in 2012. Thrasher Magazine recently used their song "Big Sur" in a skate video alongside Kurt Vile. On April 20th 2014, BJM released a beautiful 12" split single with The Magic Castles for Record Store Day.

"Sky Sounds was recorded at The Old Blackberry Way Studio in Minneapolis, MN by Neil Weir. Produced by Neil Weir, Jason Edmonds, "Sky Sounds sees the band reaching new heights. The album is dense with lush arrangements, jangling backward guitar sweeps, ever deepening melodic layers, symphonic Farfisa tones, and bright vocal harmonies. A host of guest musicians were included on select tracks, adding cello, viola, flute & trombone.

    3. Dragonfly

Magic Castles are a five-piece band from Minneapolis MN.

They are now undertaking their first European Tour .'Armed with an endorsement from The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe, a Farfisa organ, and enough psychedelic drones to zonk out an entire cast of lava lamp - worshipping retro-delia music fans, Magic Castles tilt toward the windmills of our minds with a style reminiscent of The Massacre, Spacemen 3, and many other hardcore stoner bands. - itunes review

Available on 180 gram vinyl Minneapolis psych-rockers Magic Castles are back with a new LP, 'Sun Reign', making an exciting return after founder and songwriter Jason Edmonds'suffered a near fatal car accident in November 2019.

Magic Castles are well-versed in the ways of psychedelically-inclined folk-rock. Edmonds'smooth vocal harmonies float above the guitars, creating a lush, almost Byrds-esque soundscape. The layered arrangements incorporate Farfisa organ, synths, and dreamy string arrangements.

Sun Reign is the band's fourth release on Anton Newcombe's label A'Recordings Ltd. Ironically similar to BJM, the Magic Castles have been plagued by lineup changes over the years. Due to this and other factors, in 2016, Edmonds, a single father, decided to take a short hiatus from regular live shows and touring to focus on his family.

During that time, (2016-2019) Edmonds, an introverted multi-instrumentalist, continued to record new material in his studio, and also record with a new band at Neil Weir's studio Blue Bell Knoll, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The results of these sessions are the current release, 'Sun Reign'.

    Tracklisting:
    1. Sunburst
    2. Lost Dimension

Mirror Travel's limited edition UK 10' release of 'Mexico' features four songs from their 2013 full-length debut of the same name.

Anton Newcombe approached the Texas-based three piece about releasing their brand of swirling psych-rock on his Berlin based A Recordings Ltd. after catching the band's blistering set during Austin Psych Fest.

The songs of 'Mexico' were recorded in the small desert town of Marfa, TX and the result is loose, grungy garage at its finest.

Each song travels at such an unhurried and hypnotic pace that you may feel you've driven across the desert yourself. Mirror Travel are 'garage dwelling daydreamers' [SPIN] who 'know psych rock and aren't afraid to drench your ears in it'[Indieshuffle].

    Side A:
    1. Mexico
    2. Parties
