Various Artist 'The Reverb Conspiracy Volume Six'

    £8.99

Available on double 180 gram White vinyl. The ethos of London-based indie label Fuzz Club is a desire to uncover and celebrate the best in fuzz, reverb and drone from every corner of the globe. As well as via their extensive back-catalogue and their Fuzz Club Eindhoven festival, one such particular medium through which they do this is their annual Reverb Conspiracy compilation albums.

Where the first five volumes were hailed as a Nuggets-like documentation of the European psych scene, Reverb Conspiracy Vol 6 - due for release [date] - sees the compilation go global: bringing together bands from South Africa, Australia, the USA, Germany, Brazil, the UK, Italy and Russia.

Amongst a number of the label's own bands - including Medicine Boy's shadowy noise-pop (DE) and Nest Egg's motorik 'mood music for nihilists' (US), plus Steeple Remove's dub-inflected post-punk (FR) and Crimen's heady, repetitive psych-rock (IT) - there is Aussie garage-psych outfit Nice Biscuit, an exclusive cut of Bikini Kill-meets-Oh Sees noise from Julia Robert (SA), as well as lo-fi garage-pop from Super Paradise (UK) and the double-barreled psych-blues wig-outs of Frankie & The Witch Fingers (US).

In the compilations darker moments, though, there is the hypnotically face-melting 'space-surf' of Japanese Television (UK), goth-tinged post-punk from Float (UK), murky psychedelic stoner-rock from Brazil's Firefriend, relentlessly driving krautrock courtesy of Verstärker (USA), the heavy space-rock drones of Psychic Lemon (UK) and Moscow's Selbram, who deal in a jagged alt-rock sound that takes its cues from No Wave, psych and the 'pulse and noise' of city life.

    Hedvig Mollestad Trio 'Smells Funny'

With "Smells Funny" being their sixth album in seven years, this explosive and expansive trio have gone from strength to strength, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortabel in jazz and rock clubs.  The new album sees Mollestad truly coming into her own as an amazing lead guitarist as well as a dependable riffmeister.

The last ten years have seen a thrilling new progessive wave of Norwegian avant jazz'n'rock and free metal energy combos like labelmates Elephant9, Bushman's Revenge, Krokofant and Motorpsycho - especially in the form of their Roadwork live albums. And let us not forget the mighty Scorch Trio - led by Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim - who can be said to have started it all some 15 years ago.

But it could very well be Hedvig Mollestad Trio that defines it all with their ability to turn the full force of heavy rock and electric jazz to demonic purposes. Hedvig first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father's jazz and rock record collection as a teenager.

She translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project and was given her first electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present. The members of the trio are from the districts, but Hedvig met Ellen Brekken and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad at the Music Academy in Oslo. Hedvig asked them to join her after she received the Jazz Talent Of The Year Award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009.

They have stayed together since, and all previous albums have been released on Rune Grammofon; "Shoot!" (2011), "All Of Them Witches" (2013), "Enfant Terrible" (2014), "Black Stabat Mater" (2016) and "Evil In Oslo" (2016), all to wide international acclaim.

Guitarist and composer Terje Rypdal (1947) is probably as close as one gets to a living legend in Norwegian music. Born in Oslo on 23rd August, Rypdal was already a star at home in his teens with pop-rock group The Vanguards.

This was followed by the timely and inevitable passage through psychedelia with quartet The Dream, releasing their only album, Get Dreamy, in 1967. In 1968, still only 21 years old, Rypdal released Bleak House, the first, quite extraordinary album under his own name, fully showing what direction he was moving into.

Min Bul, his trio with Bjørnar Andresen and Espen Rud, followed with their only album two years later. Rypdal and fellow Norwegians Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen were quickly picked up by Manfred Eicher, starting his ECM label.

The quartet released Afric Pepperbird in 1970, only the seventh album on ECM, and Rypdal would follow with Terje Rypdal the year after. The four of them would soon establish themselves as pillars of a progressive jazz movement in Norway and indeed Europe.

Rypdal was at an early age also drawn towards contemporary composers like Ligeti and Penderecki, and would later write a number of symphonies and genre-crossing orchestral works. He would also revisit his rock roots on several occasions. Terje Rypdal has received a number of awards, including three Norwegian Grammies (Spellemannpris), the last being the honorary award in 2005.

Sky Music is a humble and heartfelt celebration of an inspirational artist and truly unique guitarist that hasn't fully received the due credit and recognition he deserves for over 50 years of music making. Initiated by the experimental  US guitarist and lifelong Rypdal fan Henry Kaiser, we put together a Rune Grammofon all star band including keyboardist and long time Rypdal side-kick Ståle Storløkken (Elephant9, Supersilent), bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (Scorch Trio, The Thing), drummer Gard Nilssen (Bushman's Revenge), guitarists Even H. Hermansen (Bushman's Revenge) and Hedvig Mollestad, Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim (Scorch Trio) and Swedish guitarist Reine Fiske (Dungen).

Kaiser also played and produced while Hans Magnus Ryan (Motorpsycho) added bits and pieces and Jim O'Rourke beamed in his exquisite contributions to "Sunrise" from Tokyo. Bill Frisell, Nels Cline and David Torn delivered their solo interpretations, Cline with the aid of cellist Erik Friedlander.

Sky Music is their birthday present to Terje Rypdal at 70.

  • Motorpsycho 'Begynnelser' Vinyl 2x10

    Rune Grammofon

Motorpsycho 'Begynnelser' Vinyl 2x10" + CD + DVD

    £37.49

The music on this album was written for a project Motorpsycho was invited to be a part of by Trøndelag Teater in early 2015. It eventually ended up as the play "Begynnelser".

The play was directed, designed and dramatized by the independent theatre group De Utvalgte based on a new text written by Norwegian author Carl Frode Tiller. It was produced and performed at Trøndelag Teater in Trondheim with a cast drawn mainly from their ensemble.

Motorpsycho played live at every performance with an expanded line-up that included "utility psychos" Pål Brekkås or Tos Nieuwenhuizen. The play ran for six weeks in September and October 2016. Not all of this music was eventually used in the play.

The band also wrote a lot more during preparations and rehearsals. It was a long process and most of the music was tweaked in a big way to fit the flow and feel of the play. It was also played live every night, so what you would have heard during the performances would in most instances have sounded very different from this album.

The music is not sequenced in the order it was used in the play, and a lot of the music that eventually was played in the performances is missing from this album, so this is perhaps best described as 'a version of what it might have been' more than a document of what the soundtrack eventually ended up becoming.

The included DVD contains a complete 2 hour filmed performance of the play for those who want to see it and hear the final and complete music score performed in context. So all in all you get a lot of new, original Motorpsycho music.

The play itself is reallly good with great visual presentation including some stunning video work. And English subtitles! The DVD also includes a fine documentary.

Angel-Ho is known as one of the founders of Non Worldwide, alongside Chino Amobi and Nkisi. Highly regarded as a DJ and electronic music producer, on Death Becomes Her she shifts things up to another level.

Pulling on inspiration from her flamboyant favourites from Lady Gaga, Missy Elliot, and Bjork through to Kanye West, this ambitious, artful and sometimes radical album of neo-pop pushes the pop framework even further, often teetering on the brink of vertiginous chaos and dissonance, whilst slowly revealing its depth and grandeur once you settle into its sound world.

Alongside a cast of collaborators that include French producer Nunu, South African producer Baby Caramel, Asmara Maroof from Nguzunguzu, Bon and Gaika, Angel re-orientates the usual trans-atlantic pop sound to encompass a brace of experimental, diasporic producers to create beats that alternate between angular, propulsive, murky, loose, abrasive and breezy.

On top of these often advanced rhythms, she also raps and sings for the first time with lyrics about love, sex, glamour and struggle, universal fantasies, treated with an ambiguity that restructures the narrative within a trans-identity.

Her choice of guest MCs also reflects this energetic queering with K-$ and Qweezy from Cape Town, plus underground Asian American rapper K-Rizz laying down assertive bars.

On Death Becomes Her', Angel-Ho carves out a new space with her unique take on contemporary pop. Overflowing with charisma, sometimes reminiscent of Grace Jones, this album is fiercely sassy and celebratory. It feels like the start of something very exciting.

    Motorpsycho 'The Crucible'

2019 marks 30 years since Motorpsycho's humble beginnings in Trondheim. Teenage metal heads Bent Sæther and Hans Magnus Ryan had met at high school a couple of years earlier, agreeing that Rainbow Rising was the finest album ever, but it was only after a record hunting trip to London that Motorpsycho was born.

Wilfully autonomous and as artistically searching as ever, while loving the ambitions and masterpieces of both the prog genre and other related esoteric musical styles, and indeed in their own way joyously stretching the rock format as out of whack as they can, Motorpsycho neither can nor will align themselves fully to any scene or genre.

Too gnarly for prog nerds and too musically unwieldy for punks, they never called themselves a grunge band back in the early 90's, a post rock band a decade later, or a stoner rock band a decade ago. Still proudly falling between all the cracks, stools or chairs one might think of putting in their way, they will never want to be a member of any club who would want them as a member and are as ever travelling their own path in their own tempo, whatever anyone calls it or them at the moment.

It might take longer to get anywhere, but that is just fine when it's the journey itself that is the point.

Both visually and musically, The Crucible starts where The Tower ended, but it soon takes on its own hue, and it is clear that it cannot be called a sequel' as such: this is very much a step further out than anywhere the band ventured on The Tower. While it is broader lyrically speaking, it is even sharper focused musically and, if possible, even more idiosyncratic and insular than ever: unarguably a Motorpsycho album.

There aren't many traditional song structures or pop format platitudes on display, and there is indeed hardly any respect paid to any trad rock song conventions on the whole album, but that's not really what one listens to Motorpsycho for anyway, is it?

From the most Neanderthal of rock riffs to the most rhythmically oblique polytonal solo sections they've ever recorded, this album musically seems to sum up the extremes of the band's current interests and concerns.

The Crucible was recorded at Monnow Valley Studios in Wales in August 2018 by Hans Magnus Ryan (guitars, vocals), Bent Sæther (bass, vocals, sundry) and Tomas Järmyr (drums), with co-producers Andrew Scheps and Deathprod.

Scheps mixed the band's last two live recordings (A Boxful of Demons and Roadwork vol. 5), and in that process made himself a logical choice to record the next studio album.

The band's psychedelic/kraut/prog-leanings hadn't taken them as far as jazz yet, not to mention the Ornette Coleman style free jazz stuff The Source were playing, but they were game.

This is the result; some 70 minutes of metal overkill, early 70s crypto funk, analog synth hell and some pretty freeform, out there escapades.

Composed, performed, mixed and produced by Maja S. K. Ratkje Based upon Ratkje's music created for the ballet 'Sult' ('Hunger") by profiled director Jo Strømgren for the Norwegian National Ballet, this is a departure from records and live settings normally associated with Maja S. K. Ratkje, as we find her placed behind a modified, wiggly and out of tune pump organ, singing songs and improvising.

Metal tubes, PVC tubes and a wind machine were built into the organ; guitar strings, a bass string, a resin thread, metal and glass percussion and a bow are also utilized. With little or no previous experience, she had to learn to play the thing live, using both hands and feet at the same time as singing.

Maja played live on stage during every performance, but later modified and recorded the music especially for this record, with Frode Haltli co-producing. It's a freestanding document, an entity of its own, but the atmosphere is very much the same as in the play: the dusty city of Kristiania in the 19th century, the street noises and the sounds.

'Hunger' is Norwegian author Knut Hamsun's breakthrough novel from 1890.
Partly autobiographical, it describes a starving young man's struggle to make it as a writer in Kristiania (now Oslo). It has been said that the whole modern school of fiction starts with "Hunger", with it's themes around mental states and the irrationality of the human mind.

The titles are quotes from the novel, and these are our attemps at translating.

Easter / Bromide 'Doubt Rings/I'll Never Learn' Vinyl 7"

One friend. Two bands. And so it was that Manchester's 'Easter' and London's 'Bromide' met in their mutual pal Dave Armes's address book (he of Last Harbour, LCR Records and A-Sun Amissa sidekick repute). Soon after Easter were on their way down t'smoke to play at Bromide's place, namely the Birds Nest in Deptford. And verily did they smash it! So much so that Bromide singer Simon immediately thought about putting something out on his Scratchy Records label.. and why not keep the threads twisting and make it a joint release!

Especially as both bands share a love of alt. sounds from across the pond back in dem 90s days. Easter feasting on Buffalo Tom's heavier riffs, Yo La Tengo and San Francisco's 'Swell', while Bromide reminded Easter's mainman Tom of 'Nada Surf and Big Star and that New Zealand power pop stuff..' So the split-single was born.. Easter taking the A with 'Doubt Rings', a propulsive guitar-lashed gallop thru the relationship forest with Bromide on the AA offering 'I'll Never Learn' from last year's 'I Woke Up' album on Scratchy, an up/downbeat reflective tale that dries solid on the choruses when the fuzz kicks in. Easter - 'A welcome throwback to the wry, self-lacerating alt.rock of the early 90s'Uncut Bromide -if you like Dinosaur Jr and The Replacements, you'll love this'MusicOMH

And there's more..! Easter had a whole EP ready to go so punters who buy the vinyl will get a free download code for the extra tracks. Then early next year both bands will be heading out fora few gigs to plug the single, joined by Southend's own fabulous guitar reverb-drenched 'Dark Globes' - who've also got wares to plug in the shape of newly released album 'Somewhere To Land'.

Limited edition transparent Sea Foam Green vinyl with a free download.
The Compact disc is a 4 panel digipack with lyric booklet.

Sky Valley Mistress are 4 young upstarts from Blackburn, Lancashire, full of spit and vinegar who have delivered a ferocious, two fingered hello to rest of the world with their debut album 'Faithless Rituals'.

Eight tracks of fierce passion and spirit, blistering stoner rock 'n' roll with huge riffs, buckets of fuzz and hooks guaranteed to nail you to the wall from the get go. Couple that with inciendiary playing one of the best female vocalists around ... you have one helluva debut album.

In fact, SVM could easily hold their own against the likes of Jim Jones, Rival Sons, Royal Blood, BRMC or any other rockers greasy or otherwise.
Still only in their mid 20's, you can only assume, on listening to their debut, that these young turks made that journey to those legendary crossroads and did the dirty deed with the dark one himself, such is the level of musicianship and vocal prowess on show here.

The album was recorded at the legendary Rancho De La Luna, Joshua Tree, California, and co produced by, and featuring Dave Catching (Queens Of The Stone Age, Eagles Of Death Metal and Mojave Lords amongst others) and like all great rock 'n' roll it has vibe and attitude in spades.

    Sky Valley Mistress are:
    Kayley 'Hell Kitten' Davies (vocals),
    Sean 'Starsky'Berry (Guitar),
    Russell 'Russell' Russell (Bass),

    BOT Music

Beans On Toast 'The Inevitable Train Wreck'

    £11.99

Beans on Toast's new album, The Inevitable Train Wreck, is something different for the cult songwriter - an upbeat, old-school rock 'n' roll record about the worryingly bleak future of the human race, recorded solely on vintage, analogue equipment by Kitty and Lewis Durham.

Taking inspiration from musical icons such as Chuck Berry and Otis Redding, as well as modern thinkers like Noah Yuval Harari and Greta Thunberg, the album is a collaborative project between Beans and Lewis & Kitty Durham from the much-loved family band, Kitty, Daisy and Lewis.

Beans wrote the collection of songs and brought them to Lewis and Kitty, who then rewrote the music behind the lyrics and produced the record in their studio, Durham Sound Studios, changing the sound from acoustic folk to the wonderful piece of work we present to you today.

The intention of the project is probably best illustrated by the opening number, 'World Gone Crazy', a fast paced, classic rock 'n' roll tune with lyrics that claim On the brink of extinction in the age of anxiety everywhere you look is another catastrophe. Not one computer was used in the recording, mixing or mastering of the album, which is oddly fitting for Saying Thank You to Robots; a ska-tinged song about the rise of artificial intelligence.

Elsewhere on the album, you'll find a blues number about the wars of the future, Rich vs Poor, and a Kinks style jam, Extinction No.6, about the worries faced by new parents leaving a wrecked planet for their children.

The album has an overarching theme, but it's by no means a concept album; it's simply a case of what's been on Beans on Toast's mind this year. There's even a song about the day he lost Martin his faithful guitar and, of course, a love song about his muse and wife, Lizzy Bee.

The album closer, On & On, takes us back to a more familiar Beans sound - he's back on the acoustic guitar and back searching for hope with an optimistic smile.

Yes, these are troubled times we live in, so it's more important now than ever to celebrate what we already know to be good.

Life is ridiculous, it is hilarious, it can be dangerous and sometimes even tedious. But it's resilient and it is beautiful and I believe in it. Long may it continue.

  • The Mountain Goats 'Goths' Vampire Red Vinyl 2xLP + Green 12

    Merge Records

The Mountain Goats 'Goths' Vampire Red Vinyl 2xLP + Green 12"

    £43.99

Deluxe 3LP is limited edition & pressed opaque red (LP1 & LP2) + tracklight green (bonus 12'), all vinyl cut at 45 RPM. 2LP gatefold black vinyl + LP3.

The theme this time around is goth, a subject closer to my heart perhaps than that of any Mountain Goats album previous. And while John writes the songs, as he always has, it feels more than ever like he's speaking for all of us in the band, erstwhile goths (raises hand) or otherwise, for these are songs that approach an identity most often associated with youth from a perspective that is inescapably adult.

Anyone old enough to have had the experience of finding oneself at sea in a cultural landscape that's suddenly indecipherable will empathize with Pat Travers showing up to a Bauhaus show looking to jam, for example.

But underneath the outward humor, there is evident throughout a real tenderness toward, and solidarity with, our former fellow travellers'the friends whose bands never made it out of Fender's Ballroom, the Gene Loves Jezebels of the world'the ones whose gothic paths were overtaken by the realities of life, or of its opposite.

It's something we talk about a lot, how fortunate and grateful we are to share this work, a career that's become something more rewarding and fulfilling than I think any of us could have imagined. We all know how easily it could've gone the other way, and indeed for a long time did. Peter Hughes.

The New Wave of Brutality and Hardcore Massacre has arrived. Tokyo punks KRIEGSHÖG are back with their first full length. After 3 7”s that we love at LVEUM they finally went for the album. Thirteen tracks of extremely bass driven hardcore destruction. The recording is relentless, full of energy and distorted. Yet moving from the ultra blown out recording of their earlier output. This is the band’s most dynamic recording so far and in our humble opinion is destined to be a classic and genre defining album. Second Press released in time for Static Shock Weekend 16 where KRIEGSHÖG played their first ever European show. Second Press LP comes housed in a heavy duty paste on board sleeve with heavy weight inner sleeve. Overall a top quality packaging for a top quality record.

Originally released in 1996, Foolish turns 25 in 2019. Special 25th anniversary edition LP. LP is black vinyl in uncoated jacket with foil stamp detail+ LP3 coupon.

From Mac McCaughan: Our original idea for an all-acoustic album was for it to be a selection of songs from all our albums, played in the style of an acoustic performance in a record store or a radio station, which we have done quite a bit of over the years (and documented on the first of our “Clambake” series in 2001).

But with 2019 being the 25th anniversary of the Foolish album, it seemed weirder and more interesting to record an acoustic version of one whole album. I didn’t want this to sound like “acoustic demos recorded 25 years after the fact” or a band trying to “rock out” except on acoustic guitars, though to be fair we do some rocking out.

Once we got into the process of learning how to play the songs on acoustic guitars—some of which we had never performed at all—it made sense to make this record its own thing altogether. When Foolish came out, people kind of freaked out that all the guitar sounds weren’t as distorted as they had been, and it was treated as a radical departure from what we had been doing. Which is funny listening to the original album now because it pretty much sounds like our other records.

But I started thinking about the acoustic version of the album as “what Foolish would have sounded like if it were as different as people acted like it was.” So—we have guests, we have strings, we have piano, we have a saxophone! The songs themselves, extracted from the drama of the moment and what people wanted to write about then, are more applicable to Real Life than I thought they would be.

Without the embarrassing angst of the 25-year-old, they are just songs about transitions, holding grudges or trying not to, letting go of things that aren’t healthy, moving through difficult situations and relationships and trying to be “normal” in the course of all that, even though there’s no such thing.

We are lucky to have Allison Crutchfield, Matt Douglas, Peter Holsapple, Owen Pallett, and Jenn Wasner lend their great talents to the record and also lucky that Jon has an arsenal of small bells and a vibraslap.

Acoustic Foolish recorded live by John Plymale at Overdub Lane Strings by Owen Pallett on “Like a Fool” & “In a Stage Whisper”. Guest vocals by Allison Crutchfield (of P.S. Eliot, Swearin’) on “The First Part” Guest vocals by Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes) on “Keeping Track” Piano by Peter Holsapple (of the dB’s) on “Stretched Out” & “Driveway to Driveway” Saxophone by Matt Douglas (of the Mountain Goats) on “Saving My Ticket” and “In a Stage Whisper”…
