    New Heavy Sounds

    BlackLab 'Abyss'

    £8.99

Abyss was recorded under a full moon over three intense days, and has the off the leash'abandon of Fun House'era Stooges'.

Sonically, it's a fat dose of doom meets slowed down hardcore punk; filled with loud, ultra distorted guitar, and yet, a surprising amount of melody as well.

In fact, Yuko has said that the band's name is a combination of Black Sabbath and Stereolab, well here on Abyss'is where that strange mix begins to make musical sense.

The band haven't lost their love of lo-fi or Riot Grrrl'attitude.
Vocals go from shoegaze melodic to hardcore screams. The guitars are loud and heavily gnarled to the point of chaos, and underneath all this, the drums rolling and tumbling thunder amidst the riffs.

Yes there is a smattering of Sabbathy Wizarding'of course, but submerged within dark, deep fuzz and punk rock crank and grind.

In truth the vibe is closer to both the arty heaviness of early Boris, and the sweet savagery of My Bloody Valentine, than any kind of doom'tropes. It's a sound that is undoubtedly BlackLab's own.

Jono El Grande 'Melody Of A muddle Mason'

    £5.49

"Melody Of A Muddled Mason" is the natural successor to "Neo Dada", Jono's masterstroke from 2009. Some of Jono's finest writings can be found here, and he has refined his already considerable arranging skills to perfection, just listen to Bach's Beach and the title track for evidence.

Jono lists movements like Rock in Opposition and the Canterbury scene and artists and composers like Frank Zappa, Stravinsky, Magma, Henry Cow and Gentle Giant as sources of inspiration. With his releases and stage shows he has now established his own signature, with mature compositions, refined arrangements, improved guitar playing and the introduction of subtle vocals.

"Melody Of A Muddled Mason" is the sound of a composer and producer at the peak of his powers. The mint green vinyl and Kim Hiorthøy's strikingly original artwork completes this extraordinary release.

Norwegian jazz is as vital as ever and one can but wonder where it all comes from. With ”Night Owl”, their second album for Rune Grammofon, pianist Eyolf Dale (29) and sax player André Roligheten (29) are already five albums into their career and showing a maturity in writing and playing that is betraying their age considerably.

Their previous album, "Tree House" with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, also showed that they can write for a large ensemble, this being a commissioned work from Molde International Jazz Festival in 2013.

"Night Owl" was recorded at Fattoria Musica in rural Osnabrück, Germany, a studio that has hosted many famous musicians and is known for its top quality equipment and ambiance.

The music can be described as contemporary jazz with threads to both American and European traditions - highly original, structured compositions paired with improvisation; playful and melodic, modern and accessible.

    Hedvig Mollestad Trio 'Enfant Terrible'

Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke is a certified fan and it's easy to see why.

Double-tracked with a ghostly haze of background fuzz, Hedvig Mollestad's lightning-rod guitar blazes a trail that comes in the wake of the heaviest guitar giants - there's Hendrix and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Led Zep's Jimmy Page swirling around the cauldron, but also the exploratory, disciplined freeplay of Pete Cosey, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana buzzing out of her fingertips.

Together with drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad and bassist Ellen Brekken, her Trio capture the full force of heavy rock and electric jazz and turn it to demonic purposes.

It can be sledgehammer sludge, stoned to a crawl as on Arigato, Bitch'. Or it's nimble as a phantom on Rastapopoulos', a dizzying churn that's named after the archvillain of Hergé's Tintin cartoons. And for the Mollestad Trio at its intuitive, ESP-connected finest, check Liquid Bridges'.

Stian Westerhus & Pale Horses 'Maelstrom' Vinyl 2xLP

    £18.99

Stian Westerhus is best known as one of Northern Europe's most fascinating abstract guitar stylists. His recent album Didymoi Dreams with vocalist Sidsel Endresen was a unique pairing of extreme guitar abuse with gibbering vocal explosions.

As well as collaborations with Puma, Nils Petter Molvær, Jaga Jazzist, the Britten Sinfonia and others, he has released three acclaimed solo albums on Rune Grammofon since 2009.

In Pale Horses, an electronic rock trio formed with keyboardist Øystein Moen (Jaga Jazzist) and drummer/percussionist Erland Dahlen, songs are given the freedom to ebb, flow, elongate and contract, much like a more improvised set.

Breaking out of a verse-chorus mould, debut album
Maelstrom is a deluge of fluid and highly emotive tracks that rely on the superb musicianship and unforgettable vocals of the leader, who proves himself capable of expressing pain and joy in equal measure.

Perhaps the most obvious similarities -  surprisingly -  are with the experimental side of Radiohead and Coldplay, but you'll also hear traces of Scottish bedroom romantics The Blue Nile and the psychedelic solemnity of late Talk Talk.

A track like Bed On Fire', which rises from subtle digital textures to a full-on guitar solo, fully reveals these players'exploratory backgrounds; while Chasing Hills'might have sat comfortably on Radiohead's leftfield-swerving
    Kid A.

    Krokofant w/Storløkken & Håker Flaten Flaten 'Q'

    £12.99

As David Fricke points out in his liner notes, this is not just another novelty guest-project, the Krokofant on "Q" is like a brand new band. In fact, all the involved are so happy with this album that there's bound to come more, with a bunch of new material already written.

After three albums in a little over three years they felt a need to try something new, taking the band one step further. Especially Tom Hasslan, guitarist and main composer, felt an urge to expand the canvas and sonic possibilities of his writing and playing.

Hasslan's tunes are perfect vehicles for keyboard player Ståle Storløkken (Elephant9, Supersilent, Terje Rypdal) to present the full scope of his playing; from sheer pastoral beauty to full on jazz skronk.

The same can be said about Mathisen, who is given ample room for soloing. The tunes are rich in harmonic structures and melodic hooks, and with the distinctive sax/organ combination it's difficult not to occasionally think of Van der Graaf Generator in their prime.

By introducing Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (The Thing, Scorch Trio, Atomic) on electric bass, work was lifted from Hasslan's shoulders and a "proper" rhythm section was born, Skalstad and Flaten instantly bonding.

As Fricke also notes, ""Q" is their best album, the fullest expression to date of their original design - a drawing of the past forward - with a new strength in numbers".

Espen Eriksen Trio with Andy Sheppard 'Perfectly Unhappy'

    £12.49

Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and released their first album in 2010.
Since then they have released two more records on Rune Grammofon, and toured in 16 countries across four continents. The music relies on highly melodic tunes and a 'less is more' approach often credited for its unique voice within today's jazz scene by the international press.

To quote BBC in their review of the trio's second album:

'A wonderfully plaintive jazz record, abandoned to the lost art of melodic minimalism, stripped back and beautifully near bare. No smoke and mirrors, just the graceful chemistry of superb musicians at the top of their game'.

The aptly named "Perfectly Unhappy" features eight new songs by the pianist, all written with this collaboration in mind. These are enchanting and lyrical tunes, often melancholic and uplifting at the same time and will surely speak to followers of both the trio and Sheppard and attract many new ones.

With a career spanning over four decades, working together with the likes of George Russell, Gil Evans and Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard is truly one of Europe's leading saxophonists. He is currently an ECM recording artist with his own quartet.

"I knew from the first time I heard the trio play that I would fit right in. I loved the melodic sense and vibe and was thrilled when I was invited to guest with the trio in London in 2016. Espen wrote a set of fantastic tunes for the recording session in Oslo. They played themselves and we had a ball recording, everything clicked and in two days we had made a very special album". The debut album from this Norwegian-American trio consists of two long tracks that move between intimate lyricism and hardcore expressionism, shaping one of the strongest free jazz offerings we have heard for quite some time.

Filipino-American Jon Irabagon has topped both the Rising Star Alto Saxophone and the Rising Star Tenor Saxophone categories in Down Beat's critics polls and been named one of Time Out New York's 25 New York City Jazz Icons.

Among the seemingly endless praise we can read:

"stalwart technique and a deep understanding of avant-garde vocabulary" (JazzTimes),

"a musician of intense concentration who wants nothing more than to indulge a spirit of play, emphatic and unreserved" (New York Times),

"some of the most galvanizing jazz of the past few years" (Time Out New York)

"one of the strongest, most flexible, and daring saxophonists at work today" (Peter Margasak).

A founder member of Mostly Other People Do The Killing, he is also an integral member of the Mary Halvorson Quintet, Dave Douglas Quintet and Barry Altschul's 3Dom Factor and has taken part on a vast number of records.

Guitarist John Hegre and drummer Nils Are Drønen have both been central on the fertile music scene in Bergen for many years, Hegre possibly most known for his long partnership with Lasse Marhaug in Jazzkammer and Jazkamer, while Drønen has played in a number of project and groups including The Last Hurrah!!.

They met up with New York resident Irabagon during one of his many visits to Bergen where he has established a deep musical friendship with The Last Hurrah!! founder HP Gundersen.

    Ruptured / Beacon Sound

    Kinematik 'Murur al-Kiram' Vinyl LP

Murur Al-Kiram marks a departure from Ala', both sonically and musically. Mixing the pastoral and the industrial, the record relies on techno-based percussion beats, nostalgic melodies, intricate double drum interplay and ambient soundscapes, deconstructed and reconstructed time and time again.

The tracks are subtle in their angst as well as their joy, celebrating small victories in face of great defeats and echoing the band's conflicted mindset towards life in their country and community.  The record was recorded over a period of two months, and features Teddy Tawil (aka TEDTEDTED) joining the band as second drummer.

Whereas Ala'saw Kinematik's four core musicians confining themselves to one instrument and/or role within the overall sonic construct of the band, these new compositions see each musician playing and equally at ease with several instruments, adding intensity, cohesiveness and a sense of fluidity to the proceedings.

The intent was to make a record that would sound like a single travelling shot, beginning with the musicians'childhood in their hometown, to their enduring the horrendously corrupt state of political affairs Lebanon finds itself in today, until they are buried back in their place of birth; realizing in the process how slight and remote Lebanon is, as a country; and how little they, as individuals and a community, are.

To some extent, Kinematik have consistently felt like aliens in the midst of Lebanon's contemporary music scene, and this statement holds true for a large segment of the country's alternative scene nowadays.

With recent civil rights campaigns, counterfeit elections and dire social conditions, the sense of existential dread has intensified and the question of 'what the hell are we doing?' that generally occurs at the time of recording took on a more general dimension, as in is there a purpose for trying to accomplish anything at all in Lebanon today, whether artistic or otherwise? In the end, it was the salutary presence of Sary (the newborn son of synth player Rudy Ghafari) that became the 'raison d'être' of the record.

Murur Al-Kiram is the story of an important chapter in the band's history, one marked by uncertainty and hesitation, yet solid and vibrant in spite of the latter.

HP Gundersen is moulded in classic songwriter traditions, with emphasis on chord structures, arrangements, delicate details, small twists and turns and above all; The Good Melody. With The Last Hurrah!! - his longest serving musical vehicle by far - he has delivered his finest songs through three albums, and 'Los Angeles', the fourth, is no exception.

It shows why HP Gundersen is considered one of Norway's major and most consistent songwriters. While HP is responsible for the music, all lyrics were written by Maesa Pullman for this album.

"Los Angeles" started out as a commission work for the Vossajazz festival, and was performed in the scenic village of Voss in western Norway in March 2018. A far cry from Los Angeles, but to mastermind and founder HP Gundersen there are no boundaries in music and such differences are only sources of inspiration and natural parts of his vast musical universe.

For the previous album "Mudflowers" HP Gundersen "found" and recruited the perfect singer in Maesa Pullman, daughter of famed actor Bill Pullman. Coming from a musical family, she performs frequently in different musical constellations in Southern California, being a profiled presence in the local roots community.

Since the release of "Mudflowers", bass player, recording engineer and co-producer Jason Hiller has come onboard as a permanent member of the trio that currently serves as the core of The Last Hurrah!!. Despite the formidable trio, the album would not have been possible without the stellar contributions from the Norwegian and American musicians you hear on the record, each of whom contributed more than just music.

Originally seen as a one-off project, it soon became clear that the chemistry between the three went much deeper and far reaching than the Americana influences that dominated parts of "Mudflowers".

Anneli Drecker 'Revelation For Personal Use'

    £12.99

"Breathtakingly beautiful", "magical", "epic", "magnificent" and "instantly memorable" were among the words used in reviews of her much applauded comeback album "Rocks & Straws" from 2015, her first in 10 years. Brimming with memorable melodies, subtle arrangements, evocative lyrics, strong musicianship and a vital album production, it showed a mature and confident artist moving in a somewhat surprising direction, given her background in electronic music with Bel Canto, Röyksopp and her first solo efforts.

It would be no mean feat to follow up the huge artistic success of "Rocks & Straws", but to our ears "Revelation For Personal Use" is an improvement on all accounts. It is also very much a follow-up, an ode to her native town and region, and again with all the songs being based on lyrics by local cult poet Arvid Hanssen and translated to English by artist and writer Roy-Frode Løvland.

Anneli has written the album's eight lovely songs, plays piano and keyboards and has produced the album. It largely moves in the same musical landscape as the previous album, with the Arctic Philharmonic present on six tracks and string arranger Sindre Hotvedt, guitarist Eivind Aarset and drummer Rune Arnesen on board again. If anything, a couple of the tracks show a slightly sharper rock edge than its predecessor.

Kjetil Mulelid Trio 'Not Nearly Enough To Buy A House'

    £12.49

Following in the footsteps of In The Country and Espen Eriksen Trio, Kjetil Mulelid Trio is the third piano trio to appear on Rune Grammofon.

Although they can be placed in the same musical landscape, it's also fair to say there are certain obvious differences. There is a solid dose of youthful playfulness and curiosity at work here, at the same time they show an assured maturity that belies their age (26, 26 and 29).

The music is based on compositions by pianist Mulelid - inspired by everything from psalms to free jazz - but there is also room for collective improvisation. It can be energetic, rhythmically complex and harmonically rich, but also intimate and with a beautiful melody.

They work purely with acoustic sounds and timbres and are constantly reaching for new ways to express themselves within these frames.

Previously released by Henriksen himself as a digital album only, we quickly came to the conclusion that this is simply too fine an album to float aimlessly in the digital domain, and that every fan should have the oportunity to own this gem as a proper album in a physical format.

Recorded at the same Rainbow Studio sessions, and with the same top musicians and legendary engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug, this can only be seen as the rightful twin companion to "The Nature Of Connections" from 2014.

One can easily understand how Arve must have found it difficult to select tracks for "The Nature Of Connections", leaving these on the shelf.

"Composograph" is standing rock solid as a top notch Arve Henriksen album. Interestingly enough, the track "Gathering In Vågå" features Arve on rather brilliant, freeflowing saxophone (for the first time on record?).

There are the typical folk music ties, courtesy of fiddlers Nils Økland and Gjermund Larsen, contemporary chamber jazz, nods to avant free music and atmospheric tone poems.

All in all, twelve exquisite originals from one of the world's leading trumpet players.

"The Height Of The Reeds" started as a commissioned work to the city of Hull, Great Britain's cultural capital 2017. Composed by Arve Henriksen, Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang, the work celebrates the longstanding seafaring relationship between Hull and Scandinavia.

It was originally the musical companion to a sound walk that took place in April, May and June 2017. Those who took part could listen to the music on headphones while crossing the Humber Bridge.

Initially intended for April only, the arrangement proved so popular it ended up with selling out three months, a total of 15.000 tickets. Whether it will be repeated in the future remains to be seen, but at least the evocative music can now be experienced on this release. Only minor adjustments have been done to justify the transition from sound walk to album.

Other than Henriksen, Aarset and Bang, the work includes important contributions from Hull sound artist Jez Riley French, providing field recordings from the bridge itself: the river below, the noise of engines, the creaking of steel wires, wheels against asphalt and the song of the reeds in the wind.

Opera North's choir and orchestra provides the necessary musical space for the soloists, and two actors and a child are reading from translated poems by Norwegian poet Nils Christian Moe-Repstad.

This is a beautiful addition to Arve Henriksen's large and fast growing discography, and sits well with his very popular Jan Bang contributions "Chiaroscuro" (2004) and "Places Of Worship" (2013).

Arve first collaborated with the pair on the much loved and highly praised 'Chiaroscuro' (2004), Arve's second album, and later on 'Cartography' (ECM 2008) and 'Places Of Worship' (2013).

Also an important part of the line-up is Eivind Aarset, the ECM associated guitarist extraordinaire. 'Towards Language' is Arve's ninth album (eight on Rune Grammofon and one on ECM) under his own name, in addition he has collaborated on records with artists like David Sylvian, Jon BalkeTrygve Seim and Trio Mediaeval, as well as a dozen albums as founder member of free noise trio Supersilent.

Arve has never been short of praise when it comes to expressing the importance his collaborators and musicians have on the creative process. Asked to comment on his new album, and its title, here's what he has to say: 'To express something on your own can be quite challenging at times. I have for years been in creative collaborations with musicians and producers that have ecouraged and inspired me. With this help and inspiration to discover new sounds and music I have struggled and made my way to gradually be able to create some sort of language and a way of telling stories with my trumpet and singing.

They have all coloured and gradually transformed me through different artistic timezones that I have passed through. All the information, concerts, discussions and impressions have had a significant impact on the process of gradually coming closer towards the core of communication through music.

With this recording, the good help and inspirational artistic contributions from Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang at the recording session in Oslo has led to these selected tracks. Music that has a connection to 'Places of Worship', but this time recorded 'live' in the studio in a chamber music like approach inspired by contemporary elements from composers like Toru Takemitsu and Manuel de Falla, to traditional organ music, and at the end of the album bringing in a traditional 'kven' (ancient Nordic song tradition) theme from the roots of my family from the North of Norway, sung by Anna Maria Friman of Trio Mediaeval.
