    On-U Sound

    2Badcard ‎'Hustling Ability' CD

    £8.99

This is the story of the sometimes occasional but nevertheless long standing collaborations of Carlton Ogilvie, most commonly known as "Bubblers", with Adrian Sherwood. The pairing can be traced back to the end of the 1970s and the very beginnings of On-U Sound when the massed members of the fluxional On-U crew would convene to hang out together, smoke, make music and from time-to-time consign their efforts to record for posterity, but more immediately at the time perhaps, to help pay the rent.

Bubblers' entry into the On-U Sound sphere almost certainly came about through Anthony "Crucial Tony" Phillips, who in the 1970s and early 1980s was a member of Creation Rebel, the records of whom Sherwood regularly had a hand in releasing if not also producing and mixing, firstly via his Hitrun label and then later by On-U Sound itself.

From the early days and onwards Bubblers' On-U output has largely been identified only from his small print record sleeve credits. Usually this has been in the guise of keyboard supremo for the likes of reggae supergroup the Singers And Players, Dub Syndicate, Bim Sherman, more recently for Gary Clail, Little Roy, the Barmy Army and Little Axe, and up to date on Ghetto Priest and Adrian Sherwood's own solo material.

    Undivided Roots' 'England Cold' single
    Undivided Roots' "England Cold" single
As a musician and producer in his own right, at the start of the 1980s he also formed, along with Crucial Tony and Kenton "Fish" Brown, the nucleus of Undivided Roots, not only a recording, free standing reggae band but also a rhythm section for visiting Jamaican performers of the day to the UK, including Dennis Brown, Big Youth, Freddie McGregor and Culture. Other notable members have included, at different times, Don Campbell, Jazzwad (later also to work with Sherwood) and Trevor Fagan.

In fact an early single by the group, "England Cold" (AAP DP1), was produced by Sherwood and Crucial Tony and formed ultimately the only release on their Well Crucial label, made possible by the support of On-U. Despite their longevity and output Undivided Roots never quite managed to gain the critical acclaim they deserved; Bubblers also continuing to work as a studio-man-for-hire, for example with Maxi Priest in the late 1980s.

    The 'Hustling Ability' album
    The "Hustling Ability" album
Bubblers' most prominant work for On-U Sound to date came in the mid 1990s, announced by a track called "Sergio Mendes (Part 1)" which appeared on Virgin's Macro Dub Infection Volume 1' compilation in 1995, with press adverts of time crediting the track simply to 'Mr Bubblers'. An album's worth of music under the name 2 Badcard (sometimes Two Badcard) and titled "Hustling Ability" (ON-U LP78) followed soon after, with Bubblers finally taking a rightful central position in the creative hot seat, flanked ably by Sherwood. The album was well received and is still considered a high spot of its era by many an On-U Sound devotee today.

The mellowed-out track "Weed Specialist", reminding the masses that there is more to appreciating the herb than just being a 'chemical head', went on to be mashed-up and re-issued by Audio Active to a radically different, but equally compelling effect ('ON-U DP41'). A series of live shows were also planned to follow the album's release but in the end they never materialised, 2 Badcard seemingly hibernating as a performing unit as quickly as it had been conceived.

Several years of sporadic appearances by Bubblers followed as On-U went though a lull in both general activity and output. Then, in 2002, the label's re-launch saw a new 2 Badcard track, "Noise Polluters" [Rhythm 140], appear on its 'Chainstore Massacre' compilation (ON-U CD1002(1)), and in 2003 "Tabu Riddim" [Rhythm 139] featured on the 'Dub Solidarity' compilation (both tracks being re-workings of Ghetto Priest riddims from around same time). The arrival of a new album, 'Salvation Sounds', was announced and a catalogue number allocated (ON-U CD1004), but like so often at On-U Sound, it then all went quiet, and nothing of the eagerly-awaited follow-up has been heard ever since.

Meanwhile with 2 Badcard on indefinite hold, Bubblers and Crucial Tony are now part of North London's Ruff Cutt Band, an in-demand aggregation of session musicians and producers of today's and tomorrow's UK reggae stars.

African Head Charge 'Voodoo of the Godsent' CD

    £12.99

‘Voodoo Of The Godsent’ is the first new recording in five years from African Head Charge, and marks the beginning of an extensive series of new releases and classic reissues celebrating the 30th Anniversary of On-U Sound.

Formed in the early 80s by On-U head man Adrian Sherwood and percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, African Head Charge have established a unique reputation over the years for producing exceptionally beautiful and deeply strange music.

This is their first release since 2005’s ‘Visions Of A Psychedelic Africa’ and finds Bonjo once again joining forces with long time On-U stable-mates Skip McDonald, Crocodile, and The Crispy Horns, together with contributions from legendary bassist George Oban, Dancehall pioneer Jazzwad and electronic wizard Adamski.

All the elements of a classic African Head Charge album are present; a triumphant mix of dub, psychedelia, trance, afro and tribal rhythms that have given them their own unique place in contemporary music.

‘Voodoo Of The Godsent’ will be followed in April by the re-release of three seminal On-U Sound albums : Creation Rebel’s ‘Starship Africa’, African Head Charge’s ‘Off The Beaten Track’, and The New Age Steppers’ eponymous debut album, which was the first ever LP release on the On-U Sound label.

2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Adrian Sherwood’s mighty On-U Sound imprint, and the next 12 months will see the label’s busiest schedule of new releases in more than half a decade. Leading from the front comes ‘Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa’, the first new studio album in 15 years from the seminal spiritual roots collective African Head Charge.

With interest in AHC given renewed life by the recent re-issue of their classic 1991 album ‘Songs Of Praise’, new fans and the group’s legion of dedicated followers alike will be eager to submerge themselves in this latest deep collection, produced entirely with Adrian Sherwood at the controls. Without doubt, their patience will be rewarded, the passage of time having caused no dimming of the light in Bonjo’s truly mesmerising and booming vision.

AHC leader and chief protagonist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah was born and raised in a Rasta community in the Jamaican hills, and after many years of international travel, in the mid-90s he followed the Rasta dream and relocated to Africa, making his home in Ghana. Returning to London to rehearse for some live shows with Asian Dub Foundation, he teamed up again with longtime collaborator Adrian Sherwood, and ‘Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa’ is the remarkable result.

Originally inspired by a comment made by Brian Eno in a 1981 interview discussing ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’, this album is African Head Charge at their very best, rich in varied percussion and spritual chants, set over hypnotic and transcendent layers of African rhythms, trippy and bubbling dubbed-out effects, and trademark pounding bass. Contributing musicians from the extended On-U family include Skip McDonald (guitar), Crucial Tony (guitar), Keith leBlanc (drums), Charles ‘Eskimo’ Fox (drums), and Doug Wimbish (bass).

A shimmering brew of extraterrestrial dub reggae and club music influences.

Audio Active debuted in the UK with On-U Sound in 1994, with the Sherwood produced album, Tokyo Space Cowboys. The album went to No.14 in the UK indie album charts and the single “Free The Marijuana” went to No.1 in NME magazine DJ chart. “Free the Marijuana” also drew heavy radio play in Australia, being released around the time the marijuana laws were up for revision.

Using a mix of programming and live instrumentation Audio Active created a dense, dub-inspired world of sound. References to outer space and time travel interests fostered by sci-fi films and animated TV shows like Time Bokanabound in their English lyrics.

However, it’s their love of the ‘erb that is impossible to ignore and sets them apart on the Japanese music scene, where controversy is anathema. Titles such as “Weed Specialist”, “Kick The Bong Around”, “Psycho Buds”, and the “Hempire Strikes Back” are just some of the many tributes to their favourite medicine contained in their records.

The band have amongst their influences Jimi Hendrix, Sun Ra, Fela Kuti and Lee Perry and they have collaborated and done countless remixes, for artists as diverse as Haruomi Hosono (Yellow Magic Orchestra), Asian Dub Foundation and Carl Douglas.

Audio Active has toured Europe six times, earning a reputation as a fantastic live band. Appearances include Glastonbury, Big Day Out, Roskilde and other major festival dates, as well as the States, various Asian cities, and performing in a total of sixteen foreign countries.

In their home country of Japan, the band are acknowledged for their reputation as innovators and have played major festivals, including Fuji Rock and the Tibetan Freedom Festival.

ON U SOUND Presents LEE SCRATCH PERRY Nu Sound and Version contains reworked, remixed and reinterpreted versions of 11 Adrian Sherwood produced Lee Perry Classics.

He would return to the label in 2008 to release The Mighty Upsetter and the accompanying Dub Setter. The Tracks on this album see Lee Perry receive some of the most radical treatment of his work. Producer Adrian Sherwood and Ari Up, the lead singer of the formative British all-female punk group The Slits, first met in 1978. As Sherwood put it, “Ari really stood out in the crowd partly for her appearance but more so for an almost unhinged enthusiasm for the music.”

Sherwood and Ari Up would go on to form a long-lasting friendship and musical partnership. Ari Up featured as part of the original On-U collective which recorded under the guise of New Age Steppers in 1980. Their eponymous debut album formed one of the cornerstones of On-U Sound, both as a record label and as a musical production house for the next three decades.

Whenever Sherwood and Ari met up in the UK, they worked together on a then-untitled album. The first of the recordings for that album began a few years ago with the song ‘Conquer’, then in 2008 Ari Up was diagnosed with the cancer from which she would die just two years later at the end of 2010. With her unquenchable passion for music, she maintained that she and Adrian would finish the album they had begun. And they did. Sherwood flew to Jamaica where they completed the recordings for what now named ‘Love Forever’.

The album’s title is the name of a track on the very first New Age Steppers album from 1980; often when Ari signed anything it would read “Love Forever...Ari”. Other On-U Players taking part in the sessions include Denise Sherwood, N. Coplowe, Skip McDonald, Dave Wright, Filipe Tavares, Ghetto Priest and Adamski. In addition to lead vocals, Ari Up is also credited with  drum programming, bassines, and keyboards.

All tracks produced by Adrian Sherwood. This latest offering from New Age Steppers is the culmination of 30 years of friendship and love between two of Britain’s brightest and creative cult talents. Fittingly, it is also the first release of the 31st year in existence of the mighty On-U Sound imprint, still as proudly independent now as the day it first sprang to life.

Limited Edition 12" Single on Green Vinyl!

This is going to be Mixmag dub step single of the month for November courtesy Joe Muggs. Sherwood & Pinch is the ongoing collaboration between Adrian Sherwood, the magisterial dub innovator and owner of the seminal, cutting edge label, On-U Sound, and Pinch, the brains behind the Tectonic label and master of darkly filtered bass science.

Since dropping their first single, “Bring Me Weed” (June 2013), Sherwood and Pinch have continued to devastate the dance floors at events around the world with their deeply psychedelic, bass-driven, futuristic dub wizardry. The second vinyl offering from this hugely

exciting project is an up-tempo, surging, floor- killer entitled “Music Killer”. It once again showcases the sound clash between these two producers who operate in the outer reaches of dub mastery and it’s legacy in contemporary electronic music.

“Music Killer” is the result of the experimental and dynamic approach that the pair have applied to their !erce live performances and serves as a further taster of what is to come in 2014. Released as a strictly limited edition on beautiful green vinyl. Produced by: Sherwood and Pinch, Engineer: Dave McEwen. Artwork by Sam Whiffing.
