Bill Fay Group ‎'Tomorrow Tomorrow And Tomorrow' CD

    £8.99

With the renewed interest in Bill Fay's past work, the reissue of his first two albums, Bill Fay and Time Of The Last Persecution, and recently made-available pre-Decca demos (From The Bottom Of An Old Grandfather Clock), it's surprising to discover that twenty new songs have remained unreleased for over two decades.  Fay has been portrayed as a mysterious figure who somehow created two brilliant albums and then vanished. But as Fay himself has said, "It wasn't me who left the music, it was the music business that left me."

With no contract or record company support, he continued to write, rehearse and play occasional shows, which is how he met, in 1977, guitarist Gary Smith, electric and bowed bass-player, Rauf Galip, and drummer Bill Stratton, also known as improvising trio The Acme Quartet. A mutual interest in and respect for each other's work led to the decision to collaborate as The Bill Fay Group. Tomorrow, Tomorrow And Tomorrow continues Fay's tradition of writing thoughtful, life-affirming songs that, this time, benefit from extended studio sessions and input from three equally committed musicians.

This CD does not consist of demos, out-takes or "alternative" versions of previously recorded songs. It was planned and recorded as Fay's follow- up to Time Of The Last Persecution. It is The Bill Fay Group's third, previously unreleased, album, recorded between 1978 and 1981.

Chris Connelly ‎'Forgiveness & Exile' CD

    £5.99

Forgiveness and Exile is Chris Connelly's ninth solo work, the follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed The Episodes. The album is again produced by Tim Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc), Ben Vida (Town and Country, Terminal 4, Bird Show), and Connelly himself, and the musicians comprise the same jazz and improvisational band that played on The Episodes.

This time, however, Connelly's group is augmented by the addition of four of his oldest friends: David Miller (Fini Tribe), Shirley Manson (Garbage), David Tibet (Current 93), and actress Torri Higginson (The English Patient, Stargate Atlantis).

Apart from the opening song, "Arran," Forgiveness and Exile is basically one long piece divided into sections, an ever-changing and evolving meditation on war, displaced peoples, families shattered by corrupt governments, wrongful imprisonments, and torture. This impressionistic view is characterized through improvisation, dramatic change in dynamics, disparate imagery, ruined landscapes, and cities illustrated by Connelly's poetry.

The subject matter here is of course extremely dark, and it has not been taken in any way lightly by its author. In an attempt to move toward easing the plight of the millions of victims of torture the world over, all monies generated by Connelly for this project will go directly to the Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture, providing medical, mental health, emergency, and other support services to help survivors overcome trauma so that they may start new lives.

A native Scotsman, former member of Ministry and The Revolting Cocks and founding member of Fini Tribe, Connelly has collaborated with Cabaret Voltaire, Killing Joke, Robert Fripp and Jah Wobble, among many others.

After fronting some of the era’s most popular and influential Industrial acts, he embarked on a very unique solo career in the early ‘90s. His music, drawing on orch-pop, glam, and classic singer-songwriter influences, has been compared to the likes of David Bowie, Scott Walker, and Robert Wyatt. The Episodes, Connellys eighth full-length solo work, was produced by Joan of Arc’s Tim Kinsella and Town & Country’s Ben Vida.

The album is timeless and unique with radical arrangements and a crack band culled from Califone, Joan of Arc, Town & Country, US Maple and other Chicago jazz and improv luminaries.

Matmos contributes two remixes as well, most notably a take on “The Beautiful Dancing Dust,” a spare song that features the unmistakable vocals of Antony (of Antony & the Johnsons).

Michael Cashmore is an English composer and musician currently living in Berlin. His first involvement in music began in the early 80’s when he started experimenting with tape machines, acoustic instruments and super 8mm film. Around that time he founded the group Nature And Organisation who made several live performances, and later in the 90’s released several recorded works.

After becoming a member of Current 93 in 1990 Michael began writing music almost exclusively for the group. Since moving to Berlin several years ago, aside from his work with Current 93, Michael began recording albums under his own name - the first of which “SLEEP ENGLAND” was originally released in 2006

Stunning 5 track mini album from Michael Cashmore (Current 93) with all vocals sung by Antony Hegarty of Antony & The Johnsons.

This is Antony's first new material since 2005's Mercury Award- winning `I Am A Bird Now' which catapulted him into the hearts and minds of the mainstream. In stark contrast to his well received debut CD from 2006, the entirely instrumental `Sleep England', `The Snow Abides' mixes fully orchestrated music composed by Mr Cashmore with lyrics and texts specially written by David Tibet and sung by Anthony.

The results are as lush, celebratory and melancholy as you could hope for... `The Snow Abides' is also Michael's most accomplished and poignant work to date, solo or otherwise.

Heart Of The Sun is a remix album based on original Pantaleimon material from Andria Degens' 2007 album Mercy Oceans.

The list of remixers ranges from the extremely well known to the downright obscure, but all contributors manage to preserve the essence of the original music to some extent, even if structurally the songs themselves might be radically re-imagined or thoroughly overhauled. Former Wolf Eyes member and present-day stadium rocker Andrew WK kicks off the album with a reworking of 'At Dawn (Vogel)'. In every respect it's a long, long way away from 'Party Hard'.

Staying very much within the parameters of Pantaleimon's droning doom-folk sound, he weaves a blend of ominous synth tones and soft, layered vocals. Next Colin Potter delivers a fresh take on 'The Sun Came Out (Dawn Porous)', sounding all very harmonious and almost Cocteau Twins-like, only for fellow Nurse With Wound contributor Andrew Liles to opt for a slightly more minimal approach on 'All The Birds (Melting Canvas)', resulting in a sparse, very aloof and detached sounding ambience.

Other highlights come from Stephen O'Malley, Fovea Hex, Plinth and CarterTutti, all of whom stay within the parameters established by Pantaleimon's own mixes – two of which ('Today For Shore' and 'Another Day Tomorrow') appear here. Boomkat

"What I know about Pantaleimon is that it serves as a moniker [name she most likely borrowed from St. Panteleimon - whose name means "all merciful"] used by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Andria Degens. What I also know is her music pours out onto the page like a bleeding heart. Music she holds within her was only released after she took an extended trip around the world. It was then she realized the need to give birth to what we can now all take part in. I've not followed her musical whereabouts since the beginning. But, all is not lost as her latest batch of releases confirms she is someone whose endearing, restrained talent is something to cheer about".

"Her second album "Mercy Oceans" is a sort of catharsis that one needs to undergo during ones lifespan. It's music that is whispered. Notions are suggested while Degens' heart bleeds all over the speakers. This is as naked as music gets - where the soul is left barren, where possibilities exist for a better and greater tomorrow. One would like to believe that people will start their own private revolution upon hearing these songs. Degens has a keen ability to hold ones attention.

Each phrase is uttered with utmost attention to details. Each breath is filled with meaning and holds weight. With each minute, one gets a sense of floating mere inches above a large body of water in a state of weightlessness. Every time she strikes the dulcimer, plucks the mandolin, or adds drones to the mix, one is struck by the wonder of it all. With guests such as Baby Dee [harp], Isobel Campbell [cello, piano, glockenspiel and vocals], Keith Wood [guitar], the music takes on the aura of near hallowed beauty. "We Love" comes across as one of the most striking examples of Degens at her peak.

The vocals are sung with graceful lift, while the whispering dulcimer and cello melodies send shivers down the spine. Later, on "Born Into You", the string instruments and drones add up to bliss as Degens sends waves of shimmering cascades from her mouth. The crowning peak comes on "I Am", where the vocals are austere, dulcimer particularly hypnotic and the piece ends with dead silence. "Mercy Oceans" is a hill of peace and calmness spread across time and space".– Tom Sekowski
