Side One features the pounding disco soundtrack to TROUSER BAR, composed, recorded and produced by musician and writer Stephen Thrower. The film was directed by gay porn legend Kristen Bjorn, produced by esteemed author and screenwriter David McGillivray, and written by ‘A Gentleman’.
Side Two features Thrower’s music commissioned by the BFI for two silent films by Peter De Rome: Encounter (1971) and The Fire Island Kids (1971). In contrast to the disco fever of Side One, these tracks reside upon the stranger shores of Thrower’s work with Cyclobe and UnicaZürn.
Thrower first gained attention in the 1980s, as a member of the queer esoteric group Coil. He formed Cyclobe in 1998 with his long-term partner Ossian Brown: they have released numerous albums, including Wounded Galaxies Tap at the Window, Sulphur-Tarot-Garden (soundtracks to the super 8 films of Derek Jarman), and The Visitors.
Cyclobe have performed live at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall (at the invitation of artist Anohni) and the Punkt Festival in Norway (at the invitation of Brian Eno). Thrower also works with David Knight as UnicaZürn: their recent album Transpandorem was released by Touch.
He has written music for films by Derek Jarman (The Angelic Conversation, 1985), Ben Wheatley (Down Terrace, 2009) and Lucile Hadzihalilovic (Evolution, 2015), and scored Pakistan’s gore film, Zibahkhana (2007).
In 2012 he was commissioned by the BFI to write soundtracks for three silent films by Peter De Rome: Encounter (1971), The Fire Island Kids (1971) and Brown Study (1979), selections from which can be heard on Side Two of the Trouser Bar soundtrack LP.
In addition, Thrower is well known in cult film circles for his books on cinema: Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci (1999/2017); The Eyeball Compendium (2003); Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents (2007) and Murderous Passions: The Delirious Cinema of Jesu´s Franco (2015).
"10/10 - Thrower scores a pulsating and hypnotic disco suite, comprised of shifting moods that span an epic 20 minutes – imagine the more inspired moments in the music of Bobby O, Cerrone or Patrick Cowley. To accompany, Thrower has programmed new commissions for two silent films by the “grandfather of gay porn”, Peter De Rome. These tracks, in contrast to the A-side, share the same haunting and experimental tropes as his work in Cyclobe and Coil. Essential." - Jonathan Burnip (DJ Mag).
