    Bedroom Suck

    Hamjam 'a/s/l?'

    £16.99

Perth duo Hamjam is made up of best friends Hamish Rahn (Ham) and James Ireland (Jam), two creative individuals who make music they describe as 'blissed out sadness'. Distinguishing themselves as a band, and not a type of bizarre type of food yet to be invented yet, the result is a melting pot of psych and electronica.

Ever the opportunists, Rahn and Ireland started recording together upon gaining access to a studio after hours. Seeing that there was plenty of potential within those late night sessions,Hamjam was born and continues to remain a sporadic, yet crucial part of the two musos'lives.

After first gaining attention with the track Cooked'which was added to triple j rotation, and clocking 80,000 plays on Spotify with the track Love', the duo are now ready to unveil their latest release, the cleverly titled EP a/s/l'.a/s/l?'is an earnest and unassuming collection of tracks that muses on feelings of inadequacy, unrequited love and insecurities in a remarkably upbeat manner.

Steered by synths that exhilarate on certain tracks and dazzle on others, the band's hazy instrumentation conjures thoughts of warm summer nights and the thrill of being young, naive and little lovelorn. Pushing sonic boundaries and enveloping the listener in their universe, HAMJAM are here to soundtrack your existential crisis.

When they're not creating brain melting compositions together as Hamjam, Rahn and Ireland tourthe world with fellow Perth troubadours Methyl Ethel and Pond respectively.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Luciferian Towers'

    £11.99

Luciferian Towers is a heavyweight 180gram audiophile pressing from Optimal (Germany) and comes in a gatefold jacket printed on uncoated paperboard with a printed inner dust sleeve and a 24"x24" pull-out poster that re-caps all four of the artwork panels created by Godspeed You! Black Emperor for the gatefold jacket. Also includes a DL card for 320kbps MP3 album.

This, this long-playing record, a thing we made in the midst of communal mess, raising dogs and children. eyes up and filled with dreadful joy - we aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward. we recorded it all in a burning motorboat.

    (context as follows:)

    1. UNDOING A LUCIFERIAN TOWERS - look at that f**king skyline! big lazy money writ in dull marble obelisks! imagine all those buildings much later on, hollowed out and stripped bare of wires and glass, listen- the wind is whistling through all 3,000 of its burning window-holes!

    2. BOSSES HANG - labor, alienated from the wealth it creates, so that holy cow, most of us live precariously! kicking at it, but barely hanging on! also - the proud illuminations of our shortened lives! also - more of us than them! also - what we need now is shovels, wells, and barricades!

    3. FAM / FAMINE - how they kill us = absentee landlord, burning high-rise. the loud panics of child-policemen and their exploding trigger-hands. with the dull edge of an arbitrary meritocracy. neglect, cancer maps, drone strike, famine. the forest is burning and soon they'll hunt us like wolves.

    4. ANTHEM FOR NO STATE - kanada, emptied of its minerals and dirty oil. emptied of its trees and water. a crippled thing, drowning in a puddle, covered in ants. the ocean doesn't give a sh*t because it knows it's dying too.

Finally and in conclusion; The 'luciferian towers' L.P. was informed by the following grand demands:
+ an end to foreign invasions
    + an end to borders
+ the total dismantling of the prison-industrial complex
+ healthcare, housing, food and water acknowledged as an inalienable human right
+ the expert f**kers who broke this world never get to speak again

With Bardo Pond's RSD trilogy coming to an end, last year's acclaimed Acid Guru Pond brought Bardo, Acid Mother's Temple and Guru Guru together. The Philadelphia groups output for Record Store Day have been some of the most exciting and rewarding releases in recent years. Now they return with yet another special release, this time side project Curanderos'.

Formed by the improvised journeys of the formidable Bardo Pond and experimental ensemble Kohoutek, these compositions take you on a cosmic voyage through kosmiche, drone, noise, prog and free jazz.

Purveyors of psychedelic rock, Bardo Pond have the outward specifications of a rock band but the rivers that converge into the band's oneiric flow have their headwaters in the outlands of ecstatic jazz, free noise and the avant-garde.

It feels like someone left the light on in the studio and it all just ran itself, there had been a funky human input earlier in the day but, by a Darwinian machine-led kind of osmosis, the tracks recorded spent the wee small hours self-reducing and simplifying themselves. Marinated in music.

'I believe more in the scissors than I do in the pencil,' said Truman Capote. 'Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,' opined Leonardo da Vinci much earlier in proceedings. Yes, it's the space around the object, what you leave out that makes what you leave in so important. ESG know this. Sure they can play the game but it's the swagger of the groove and the minimal topping - like an anti-cup cake - that makes this unique New York sisterhood so appealing on Keep On Moving'.

Sampled on TV ads, lauded by critics and swooned over on the dancefloor, ESG's post-punk took out the grunge and polished the basics. Cut them open and 'less is more' is written all the way through. Keep On Moving'was released just over ten years ago to much praise (Q said it was 'even better' than 2002's much loved Step Off').

ESG had been sparring partners for PiL and early hip hop and four years after the Off', they were onto something new - rhythm as core, reflective storylines about relationship management, sensuality and insanity gather around the bass fix but they're much blurrier than the incessant beats. Inadvertently they unmask techno and glitch and leave out any kind of superfluous fluff. It's hard and temple throbbing. Turn it up. And keep moving.

'If there's one tune which sums up ESG's enduring lust for life, it's the beautifully-judged Black Flag/early techno crossover of the closing 'Gimme A Blast'.' The Guardian 5/5

'This album's every percussive aspect has been honed to impart the maximum amount of pleasure.' The Observer

'When musicians have this intensity in them, they often get to it sooner and stay put. Ms. Wolfe sounds like she's using it by choice, not disposition; she can use different kinds of darkness as colour or tincture." - NY Times

'The reigning dark priestess of goth-scarred art rock.' Rolling Stone

Hiss Spun is Chelsea Wolfe's sixth album. Following her acclaimed 2015 album Abyss, Hiss Spun is at once dynamic, heavy, and raw. NPR shared the song '16 Psyche,' saying, 'Wolfe has always possessed a talent for dynamic song writing, particularly concerning the theatre of the soul. But the masterful "16 Psyche" is a full-on ride, and one that finds her at her most commanding and climactic yet."

Recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the album was conceived as an emotional purge, a means of coming to terms with the tumult of the outside world by exploring the complexities of one's inner unrest. 'I'm at odds with myself,' she explains. 'I got tired of trying to disappear. The record became very personal in that way. I wanted to open up more, but also create my own reality.' Hiss Spun features prominent guitar contributions by Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure) and a guest spot from Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, SUMAC).

Digging beneath the mess of the world to find the beauty underneath is perhaps the most consistent theme in Chelsea Wolfe's expansive discography. 'I wanted to write some sort of escapist music; songs that were just about being in your body, and getting free.' 'You're just bombarded with constant bad news, people getting fucked over and killed for shitty reasonsl, and it seems like the world has been in tears for months, and then you remember it's been fucked for a long time, it's been fucked since the beginning. It's overwhelming and I have to write about it.' Hiss Spun was recorded by Kurt Ballou. While past albums operated on the intimacy of stripped-down folk music or the throbbing pulse of supplemental electronics, Wolfe's latest offering wrings its exquisiteness out of a palette of groaning bass, pounding drums, and crunching distortion. It's an album that inadvertently drew part of its aura from New England winter, though the flesh-and-bone of the material was culled from upheavals in Wolfe's personal life. Aside from adding low-end heft with gratuitous slabs of fuzz bass, long-time collaborator Ben Chisholm contributed harrowing swaths of sound collages.

The album opens with the sickening bang of 'Spun', where a lurching bottom-heavy riff provided by Chisholm and Troy Van Leeuwen serves as a foundation to a sultry mantra of fever-dream longing and desire.

The first third of Hiss Spun'whether it's the ominous twang and cataclysmic dynamics of '16 Psyche', the icy keyboard lines, restless pulse and harrowing bellows of Aaron Turner on 'Vex', or the patient repetition and devastating choruses of 'The Culling'all carry the weight of desperation, lost love, and withdrawal. Wolfe's introspection and existential dread turns outwards to the crumbling world around us with 'Particle Flux', an examination of the casualties of war.

The electronic thump of 'Offering' serves as an ode to the Salton Sea and the encroaching calamities stemming from climate change. The obsession with white noise and global destruction carries over into 'Static Hum', where the merciless percussive battery of Wolfe's current drummer Jess Gowrie helps deliver the dire weight of a sonnet dedicated to a 'burning planet.'

By the time the album closes with 'Scrape', Wolfe has come full circle and turned her examinations back inward, reflecting over her own mortality with arguably the most commanding vocal performance in her entire oeuvre.

Every Chelsea Wolfe album is cathartic, but never before has both the artist and her audience so desperately needed this kind of emotional purging.

Bundle with Purple 2xLP + 'Snowflake' 7" available.

Purple vinyl - Infamous Nymphs front woman Inger Lorre celebrates how vital her songs still sound today, with a live recording of a sold-out show at the legendary Viper Room.

The set includes classic Nymphs tracks, ‘Sad & Damned’, ode to a serial killer ‘The Highway’ and the mourning swirl of ‘Imitating Angels’, with the addition of a cover of Siouxsie & The Banshees ‘Monitor’.

This live album is raw and primal; tribal, glamorous, witch-y, grunge-y, punk. Inger states, “These songs are the sound of me walking through fire…” Lorre’s cult following has grown in strength of late, with the seminal self-titled debut album re issued by Rock Candy Records and 2 new songs released for Record Store Day. Encouraged by the interest she is recording a new album, tentatively planned for an autumn release.

Often seen as musician’s musician (once dubbed by Jeff Buckley as ‘The Patron Saint of Fucked-Over Musicians’) and having worked with the likes of Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins, sadly Inger’s notoriety often eclipsed her darkly beautiful music. Haunted by the infamy of a band that burned brightly all too briefly, before imploding in a devastation of bereavement, addiction, mental health issues and misguided record company dealings. No one will ever forget the desk pissing incident.

Inger Lorre is a music industry legend. These days Inger Lorre has mostly conquered her own demons - exorcised through art, music and time to heal. What comes next will no doubt be unique as the women herself.

“Inger retains her strength as a songwriter and performer without losing any of her sensitivity, fragility and danger. I always look forward to what she does, it never disappoints” – Henry Rollins

"The Nymphs were a very original underground band with a unique sound and GREAT songs" - Iggy Pop

  • Artefact 'Votive Offering' - Cargo Records UK

    Adagio 830

Artefact 'Votive Offering' Vinyl LP + DL Card

    £16.99

You might have previously chanced upon Artefact if you've got your ear to the ground of the fertile, exciting DIY punk circuit in the UK. Equally, they might be brand new to you, but there's no shame in that game. Release-wise, the four-piece have gone straight from a demo to a debut LP - a step-up that, Votive Offering', the long player in question, justifies in a half-hour blaze of elegant, alluring gothic punk grandeur. (Noel Gardner).

Artefact assembled in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, around late 2014 and debuted in early 2015 with a seven-song demo cassette. Featuring Hannah Saunders on vocals, Matthew Green on guitar, Jon Mohajer on bass and Danny Parsons on drums, members'musical CVs span indiepop (Joanna Gruesome), post-hardcore (Facel Vega), emo (Plaids), garage punk (Twisted) and slowcore (Mars To Stay).

This collective experience has certainly informed Artefact, in terms of how they operate and conduct themselves, but it should equally be seen as a clean break, and a chance to indulge their tastes for postpunk, goth, deathrock and the darker side of the tracks in general.

Saunders - the only one of the quartet to be playing in a band for the first time - is a great and mercurial presence at the microphone, ramping up the drama and emotion running through Votive Offering'. Her lyrics are suitably, poetically intriguing, heavy with alliteration and wordplay and spiked with literary and historical references. They meet their perfect match across these ten songs: rolling rhythms built from tom-heavy drums and punchy basslines, waves of ear-ringing chorus-pedal guitar, an ability to switch tempos from a brisk clip to a funereally slow march.

Votive Offering'is boosted by a recording (at North Wales'Foel Studios) which gives each sonic element the spotlight it deserves, while retaining Artefact's serrated edge, and mastering by prolific punk platter polisher, Daniel Husayn of North London Bomb Factory. The striking sleeve art comes from inside the mind of Scott Young, an American artist who has also fashioned covers for bands including Gag and Strutter. And it's being released by German punk label Adagio830 (Diät, Dark Blue, Ranx/Xerox, Rat Columns) as a result of label owner Robert Schulze stumbling on an Artefact live set while on tour, and falling in love.

Anyone whose tastes include foundation stones of goth such as Siouxsie & The Banshees or Bauhaus; The Mob, Part 1 and other names from the gloomier end of 1980s anarcho punk; or contemporary burners of the flame like Belgrado, Arctic Flowers or Anasazi - ¦ Artefact have made an album for you to fall in love with too. • The Bomber Jackets 'Kudos To The Bomber Jackets' - Cargo Records UK

    Alter

The Bomber Jackets 'Kudos To The Bomber Jackets'

    £14.99

Kudos To The Bomber Jackets' is the horrifically wry new album from The Bomber Jackets. Following on from 'Lister,' their debut for Alter, 'Kudos To The Bomber Jackets' has a restlessness that takes broader strokes. It finds and holds a register of meandering hope by setting the perverted detail of domestic minutiae against an acutely self-conscious melancholy that cynically daydreams its way into an awkward middle-ground between profundity and platitude.

Following the stop-start formation that plagued the group's early days, the three-piece of Russell Walker, Daniel Bolger, and Sian Dorrer remain intact. Both Walker and Bolger will be familiar from the ticklish post-punk of The Pheromoans, whilst Dorrer has a varied CV with groups such as Plug, and Ravioli Me Away, and with involvement across London DIY nodes. At times they give it a bit of a desaturated garage bump, other times there's the throb of marching mono-synth wave.

'Deranged Sauce Mum' comes off as a chopped and screwed hardcore, though with Walker's vocals it's less gurning glee and more furrowed brow, it should be said. There are very many disparate elements across 'Kudos To The Bomber Jackets' that come to give the new album a kind of uneasy grace, which is perhaps the groups singular force, the unchaining of an ingenious familiarity that's dizzyingly bizarre and equally bleak.

Lyrically and musically their new album contains the traces of many surfaces both interior and exterior. Its dream-like qualities are formed through a kind of musical frottage, always preserving the trace of the hand, arriving at its surreal heights through fidgety non-sequiturs of an aesthetically acerbic persuasion. In this way it never quite replicates anything that you feel to be present in its parts.

'Kudos To The Bomber Jackets' indexes petty despondency for better days, imagining some unforeseen and unremarkable circumstance that makes up for it all. Welwyn Garden City's former shredded wheat factory is on the cover. Redevelopment plans for the site are in progress.

  • Astral TV 'Chrystal Shores' - Cargo Records UK

    El Paraiso

Astral TV 'Chrystal Shores' Vinyl LP - Transparent Blue

    £18.99

Astral TV is a new project from Causa Sui synth- and electronics-wiz Rasmus Rasmussen and fellow inner-space traveller Keith Canisius. On 'Crystal Shores' they create fluctuating aural landscapes, ranging from subtle and earthy to celestial and downright paranormal. Inspired in part by classic synth-scores, vintage European 'kosmische' and modern drone, the duo has created the soundtrack for a heady, sonic trip.

Like with the best new age music these sounds can provide solace and regenerative energies in the listener, but ultimately the moods the duo are creating are too open and ambiguous to be neatly categorized. The bright analog synths and delicate Stratocaster notes occasionally conjures images of rushing water, slowly passing cumulus and weightless, orbiting satellites.

But there are more mysterious undercurrents in this music as well - periodically pulling it into peculiar, hypnagogic realms, where ghostly digital presences awake. 'Crystal Shores' is awash in layers of tonal perfection, and while it constantly evolves, there's a unified feel to each of its gorgeous vinyl sides.

The duo has that rare ability to create a sense of familiarity without feeling like a retread. Fans of minimalism, ambient and vintage synth scores will find much to delight in in these multicoloured, rich-sounding grooves.

2nd album from Danish synth-improv duo Videodrones, dives deeper their brand of throbbing synth themes from the goriest movies that never was. It's easy to hear the starting point of Videodrones: From italian composers such as Fabio Frizzi, Marcello Giombini, Riz Ortolani - or even Morricone & Alessandroni at their most industrial.

But Videodrones adds a touch of previously unheard madness to their Giallo-themed synth-gasms. Based largely on improvisation, Videodrones tosses and turns - it's like the thing is ALIVE: leaving slimy trail of electronic musical styles in their wake: there's toxic levels of italio disco, german kosmiche musik, new age, even some stabs at holy grails of 70's and 80's pop.

The record culminates in a Synth-proto-doom track - Nattens Hævn (Revenge of the Night): too weird to live, yet too rare to die. Videodrones improvisations are far from boring: chopped into smaller bits the album is of a suite-like nature - keeping the odd, jagged energy of improvisation, every part adds to a whole, larger narrative.

The result is a suite-like walkthru, often changing pace, dropping notes or drifting in scale. The images Videodrones convey is collectedly strangely solemn - almost uplifting at times, in their maddening state of constant synth flux.
