£16.99This is an album that isn't just stunningly bleak, it's got the sort of incredible balls and skull melting torment that makes for endless listening. There are few black metal albums that so perfectly sum up the inherent horror of black metal as a genre, this one goes beyond the pale, serving to rip us limb from limb and remind us why we got here in the first place.Visit product page →
The ominous trudge of Cinereous Incarnate is the result of years of honed efforts. This is the bands third full length and perhaps the most fully and elegantly conceived to date. Abstracter's ability to conjure up incredible and death defying atmospheres is impressive to say the least. Not only that though but there is something with the guitar tone that almost suffocates the listener.
You find yourself drowning under a sea of volume and loving every oppressive minute of it. Yet despite how abstract this record can be and the familiarity with the scene needed to 'get it' there are some undeniable grooves that make it easy to sink in to what's been painted here. Abstracter crawl forward, covered in their own filth and loving every minute of it.
The magical devastation of a song like Wings Of Annihilation is not to be underestimated and is a clear indicator of the bands songwriting talent. Cinereous Incarnate is not just a masterful release - it's symbolic of all that black metal can be. It is mesmerizing and cruel, over the top and punishing, and this is why I can't help but to admire it.
Alienating and wonderfully deep, I'm excited to delve once more into this rabbit hole. (two guys metal reviews)

£13.99The side project of Solbrud guitarist/vocalist Ole Pedersen Luk, Afsky makes a big impression on its debut LP.Visit product page →
Afsky covers a lot of ground and treads the line between traditional black metal, atmospheric black metal and depressive black metal, with some additional influences seeping in to provide some subtle nuances.
It sometimes has that abrasive second-wave tonality and riffing that wouldn't sound out of place on a Taake record, while on the other hand it alternates between icy assaults and slower atmospheric/depressive sections that have a lot of depth to offer listeners.
It's a strong first showing for this new Danish black metal project.

Hailing from Leipzig in Germany, ANTLERS are a punk and shoegaze-influenced black metal band driven by solemn and vast riffing soundscapes, inconsolable mid-tempo rhythms, and eerie melodies and moods. Their songs unfold slowly, taking the listeners by the hand across vast plains and soaring great distances, guiding them through a desolate and charred landscape where hope and destruction eternally fight in complete solitude a final battle for survival.
Antler's music is grim and atonal, but overtones of hope and redemption seep through their walls of furious tremolo picking and endless waves of blast beats. There is some kind of celestial and glowing energy in this music, something that makes it luminous and reassuring, even in its stark and torrential aggression. (CVLT NATION) "This is the forest primeval, an ecosystem in a state of primal balance.
There are the hunters and the hunted. Life feeds on life, and the cycle coils forever onward, subject only to the whims of the eldritch gods who carved this alien landscape as a sacred temple wholly separate from the contrivances of modern man.
ANTLERS reign supreme in this pantheon, doling out harsh justice to unwary interlopers in the form of chthonic growls that reek of aeons of rot, electric bolts of blackened riffs, and austere, stately drumming. This is a testament to the wild, dangerous, foreboding, and captivating." (W.)
Mastered by Chris Fielding of Conan.
£13.99"Tyndir, a norse word for fallowed ground, speaks of the tension between nature and man and the realization that nature will ultimately reclaim all that man claims sacred. Realizing their doomed black metal style struck a chord, the trio began demoing material and playing live. After two self-released demo releases, a blistering and massive two song contribution to a split release with ANICON, and a limited edition EP, BELUS forged a bond with Vendetta Records to release their latest and most shuddersome offering to date.
Apophenia delivers seven new songs packed to the brim with merciless, rippling, and suffocating atmosphere. Each song is crafted with authentic, proficient guitar and bass work that focuses on massive riffs without studio trickery. Ritualistic and steadfast guitar and bass tones speak their own languages as they slither throughout Apophenia.
Clever and intuitive drumming drive merciless triplet-blasted fervor into each song and pumps life into the bleak and dark pulse of the world. Apophenia brings agonizing, indignant, and thunderous anthems of unwavering whispers of dissonance through an immortal storm.
The unrelenting, bleak aura of Apophenia puts forth an acrimonious pall while reaching for serenity.

£16.99Haunter's debut album, Thrinodia delivers forty-six and a half minutes of aggressive, filth-encrusted Black/Death Metal, heavy on gritty, grating nihilism and grim, sombre melody, without mercy or compromise. That being said, the surprisingly solemn, slow-burn introduction to 'Perinatal Odium Dilute' (complete with some captivating bass/guitar interplay) reminds me quite a bit of the dearly-departed Ludicra, although the savage torrent of blackend venom and vitriol which follows is several shades darker and several times more vicious.Visit product page →
The two bands do share a similar penchant, however, for interweaving hellishly hooky riffs and subdued, shadowy melodies into the mix, as the eerily headbangable finale to 'Perinatal Odium Dilute' and the sublime second half of the savage 'Untitled' so aptly demonstrate.
The vocals of Bradley Tiffin are unflinchingly bestial throughout, and are frequently employed more as simply another instrument in the collective cacophony, rather than as something separate in their own right, rising from a rumbling, blast-furnace roar to a chalkboard-scraping shriek, sometimes reaching a level of apoplectic fury (see the barnburning 'Vial' for proof) which renders them nearly indecipherable.
'Thus My Undertaking, to Reject Stagnation, and to Liberate Fervency' may have a knowingly pretentious title, but it just so happens to be one of the album's best (and most varied) songs, transitioning from its haunting, minimalist intro into a raging torrent of scorched-earth guitar work and lithe, limber bass lines, before running through a violent sequence of of straining, strangling tremolo runs, chaotic blast-work, and dreary, disconsolate melodic interludes, with barely a pause for breath.
Following the surprisingly atmospheric (yet still shockingly intense) strains of 'Apnoeic (Polarized in Retrospective Contempt)' - which is, by the way, another real stand-out - the album concludes with its fourteen-minute title-track, which, despite its extravagant run-time and the sheer density of its sonic assault, still manages to work in a number of brutally effective hooks and eerie melodic touches along the way, before finally culminating in a drawn-out finale of gloomy ambience and brooding distortion.
So, while this album isn't perfect (the raging chaos of it all doesn't always seem fully under the band's control, and the unrefined density of their sound doesn't always do them any favours), it's still perfect for all of those with a jones for something ugly and uncompromising, something which doesn't pull its punches, and which offers no excuses. Three tracks and 34-minutes of cosmic doom metal was just what the doctor ordered. Hexer's surprisingly tactful use of melody, nuance and feel drifts beneath cataclysmic slabs of sludge and doom, creating an intriguing sonic landscape that retains the listener's interest for the majority.
Despite a rather tedious closing act, the occasional lack of clarity in the mix during heavier moments, and that elusive musical equivalent of 'wow, that was awesome,' Hexer are a band that oozes atmosphere and immersion.
A bit more fine-tuning and identity-finding and Hexer will continue to grow. Long live cosmic doom! Hexer is a four-piece outfit from germany, combining doom and black metal with oriental tunes, repetetive riffs, drone and atmospheric soundscapes.
