    Hyperdub

Kode9 & The Spaceape 'Black Sun'

    £5.99

It has been five years since the release of kode9 and the spaceape's searing first album 'memories of the future'.

On this new recording, named after kode9's influential 2009 single 'black sun', the intensity and themes of their debut remain, but the delivery is more rapid and with greater clarity, the beats more jagged and restless. starting as a dense onslaught, 'black sun' proceeds to expand and contract its galaxy, sucking you into its orbit, and daring you to come and bathe in the warmth of its toxic glow.

Kode9 and the spaceape explore an accelerated sonic fiction with this album. Spaceape verbally conjures up a world under a titular 'black sun'; his lyrics intimating an unknown time resonating strongly with the present, after an unclassified radioactive event has transformed the planet, much of which is now on fire. Spaceape sends radio transmissions from this irradiated, scorched zone. his demeanour has changed. Kode9 has tuned into him on a different frequency.

Both formats arrive in high quality packaging. the heavyweight double vinyl set is housed in a dense board gatefold jacket, and digipack cd is accompanied by 16 page artwork booklet.

Lyric reproduction and illustration in the classic graphic novel style is inked by Raz 'Badawi' Mesinai.

  • Hedvig Mollestad Trio 'All Of Them Witches' - Cargo Records UK

    Rune Grammofon

Hedvig Mollestad Trio 'All Of Them Witches'

    £12.99

Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen is a guitar heroine for our times. Born in the Norwegian town of oelesund in the early 80s, she first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at the age of ten. As an exploratory teenager she dug deep into her father's jazz and rock record collection and translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project.

Then she was given an electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present, and never looked back. But there's nothing pious about her music. Her molten, overdriven guitar sound is forged in the same fiery furnace as Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, then plunged into a steaming vat of free jazz in the Sonny Sharrock/Fred Frith mould.

In tracks like 'The Rex' and 'Lake Acid', you'll hear the megalithic riffology of Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' and 'Rock 'N' Roll', but with an agility and intensity peculiar to the dark Northern regions where she and her bandmates were raised.

Her drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad grew up in a Norwegian hillbilly town where the kids taste moonshine before they've started school. And bassist Ellen Brekken was raised on a farm and is extremely fascinated by trains ' which, given her impeccable timekeeping, seems highly appropriate. 'Now we are kind of married', says Hedvig.

All Of Them Witches follows the Trio's previous Rune Grammofon release, Shoot! (2011) and, like labelmates Elephant9 and Grand General, represent a thrilling new progressive wave of Norwegian avant rock/free metal energy. This latest batch of electrifying instrumentals was recorded live in the island environment of Ocean Sound studio, a grass-roofed wooden barn on the edge of the Norwegian Sea fitted with state of the art equipment, where the Trio could swim in the freezing waters before breakfast and stretch their gaze out to the horizon in mid-take.

It's no surprise that such widescreen surroundings shoul1st d give rise to epic concepts, and the title of first track 'Sing, Goddess' takes its name from the opening line of Homer's Iliad. Inspired by the wide open skies, 'Shawshank' and 'Ghrá Rúnda' are more reflective pieces, bathed in controlled feedback. 'We have named our pieces of music after things we care for, matters we think about, or feelings that we carry,' says Hedvig. 'Some of them are dedicated to people we love, art we like, experiences we have had.

Some of the titles are humorous and with one specific meaning to us, and some are more connected to the title All Of Them Witches, like 'Achilles' and 'Code Of Hammurabi' ' the ancient law that, among other things, describes how witches should be treated.' Witches have historically been victims of persecution, but as Hedvig reminds us, black magicians can also hold the reins of power. 'There is so much change in the world,' she says, 'and this is nothing new for our age. There are always people screwing up, for reasons we don't understand, driving their country and its people over the edge.

Too many people have too little, because a few people need to have much more than enough. Witches now are the state leaders that let their people suffer; witches then were both the ones thrown into the sea by law, and the very ones throwing them.'

Recorded live at Grand Sport Studio, november 6-7 2007.

Excellent new trio consisting of Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Humcrush) on keyboards, Nikolai Eilertsen (The National Bank, Lester) on bass and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums.

Storløkken mostly concentrating on organ and electric piano gives the album a late sixtees, early seventees flavour with traces of rock, jazz, prog and psychedelia. The rock solid rhythm section gives it all a contemporary edge and we get an extremely tight little unit with a high degree of great musicianship as well as pure joy in their playing.

Already a firm live favourite on the Norwegian scene for a couple of years due to a handful of highly energetic and enthusiastically received concerts, they have transfered their live promise to the recording studio with ease. The album was recorded live to analogue tape in Grand Sport Studio, Oslo.

    Motorpsycho 'Still Life With Eggplant'

How do you follow up such an artistically and commercially successful venture as The Death Defying Unicorn? First of all by just being Motorpsycho, a band that for close to 25 years have done whatever they want to without considering trends, career moves or expectations.

For Still Life With Eggplant they assembled some 20 songs of what Bent Sæther calls other music, simply songs from the last three years that didn't suit the Unicorn but refused to be ignored. In October the band entered Brygga Studio in Trondheim for the first time in many, many moons, this being the studio where they recorded a few of their first albums (Soothe, Demon Box and Timothy's Monster) some twenty years ago.

This time the core trio was augumented by guitarist Reine Fiske. Best known for his work in Swedish psych-combos Dungen and The Amazing, Reine is an old acquaintance of the band, and his recent exploits with Ståle Storløkken's Elephant9 made the pairing seem like a potentially interesting one for Motorpsycho as well.

The fruits of Reine's involvement, as presented on this album, speak for themselves: his fingerpicking dexterity on the acoustic guitar provides both Barleycorn and the old Love chestnut August with a solid organic bed for the musical escapades of the other three, and on The Afterglow his tasteful guitar shadings and mellotron work adds immensly to the mood of the song.

On their fourth album, counting the limited vinyl only '?Live At The BBC'?, Elephant9 join forces with Reine Fiske, the quite excellent Swedish guitarist from Dungen, The Amazing and Träd, Gräs och Stenar, for yet another heavy slice of mindblowing modern rock'n'jazz psychedelia.

Writers have called upon names like Tony Williams' Lifetime, Deep Purple, Brian Auger, Emerson Lake & Palmer and early seventies Miles Davis to describe the music, pointing to the fact that Elephant9 are comfortable in both rock and jazz. Reine Fiske makes his entrance on the title track, the long intro section almost sounding like it could have come off an early Terje Rypdal album.

No coincident considering Fiske is a big Rypdal fan and Storløkken being Rypdal's keyboard player for well over a decade. His guest spot ends with the final thirteen minute tour de force and its heavy funk intro reminiscent of another guitar great and his Band of Gypsys.

'Atlantis' was recorded at Stockholm's legendary studio with the same name, mixed by Christian Engfelt in Oslo and mastered by Brian Lucey at Magic Garden Mastering.

Fire With Oren Ambarchi 'In The Mouth A Hand'

    £6.49

Mats Gustafsson: Tenor sax, live electronics, Fender Rhodes, organ Johan Berthling: Electric bass Andreas Werliin: Drums Jim O'Rourke: Guitar.

We are yet again proud to present a new album, their third, from this excellent Swedish trio, something of a supergroup with members from already well known projects. And again it's a  collaboration, this time with the extraordinary and prolific guitarist Oren Ambarchi.

With their heavy, hypnotic, psychedelic rock'n'jazz explorations they have carved out a different sound than any of the groups they are normally associated with. Sax player, improviser, composer and fervent record collector Mats Gustafsson is possibly most know from powerjazztrio The Thing, he has also played more than 1500 concerts and participated on around 150 records with musicians like Peter Brötzmann, Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee and a host of others simply too many to mention here.

Johan Berthling has worked freelance with jazz, improvised music, pop, folk and more. He is a founder member of the great trio Tape and founded Häpna, one of our favourite record labels. Among his current other groups are Animes with David Stackenäs and Raymond Strid and Sten Sandell Trio with pianist Sten Sandell and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Johan is also working as a record producer. Andreas Werliin, drummer extraordinaire in Wildbirds & Peacedrums, is Fire!'s youngest member and one of the most interesting and acclaimed new percussionists in the creative music scene of Scandinavia.

He has developed an exceptionally personal way of playing and is known for his strength and creativity. With Wildbirds & Peacedrums he has released two acclaimed albums of modern bluesy folk music and toured extensively in Europe. Oren Ambarchi is a true explorer of the guitar, re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it's no longer easily identifiable as itself as The Wire once wrote. Born in Sydney, Australia, Oren started out as a drummer playing free jazz before starting to experiment with a guitar laying about in the rehearsal room, one thing leading to another.

He has a number of albums to his name on labels like Tzadik, Touch, Häpna, Southern Lord and Black Truffle and has collaborated with Fennesz, Keiji Haino, John Zorn, Jim O'Rourke, Keith Rowe, Evan Parker, Merzbow and Sunn 0))) to mention just a few.

Volcano The Bear 'Golden Rhythm/Ink Music'

    £5.99

The vinyl edition includes voucher for free MP3 download of the whole album.

We are thrilled to present the brand new studio album from Volcano The Bear, the band that have, in the words of The Wire magazine, produced some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record and on stage. Or, as Losing Today puts it, no one sounds, has sounded, or will ever sound quite like Volcano The Bear. A calculated hysterical melting pot of This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Faust and The Residents, of musique concrète and ethno-folk, all seen through a prism of theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces.

Formed in 1995, and after several self-released tapes and CD-Rs, VTB so excited Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton that he brought his United Dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, The Inhazer Decline, in 2000. Since then they've released music on such labels as Misra, Beta Lactam Ring, Textile, Digitalis, Pickled Egg, Alt Vinyl as well as their own imprints Volucan and Volfurten with the exceptional Classic Erasmus Fusion from 2006 being a possible highlight.

On record VTB offer stark and stunning absurdities in the most bizarrely beautiful way. Recycling and recontextualising their material is an innate habit, and the variety of recording options they might chose (be it a highly equipped professional studio or a second hand dictaphone) allows their craft to be formed in a myriad of different ways. VTB have toured extensively throughout Europe and North America and in concert they are the duo of Daniel Padden and Aaron Moore. Third member, Clarence Manuelo, no longer performs live but his inimitable sounds and influence are still very much a part of a VTB performance.

In their unique, often chaotic live shows, the adrenalin and invention drips from their earlobes as they thrust spectacular oddities in the faces of their audiences, always aided by their sublime multi-instrumentalism. Absurd humour and eclectic ways of producing sounds are characteristic of their live performances and their extensive knowledge of the traditions of experimental and folk music makes the band difficult to categorise.

The band record everything they play and will often use these recordings as raw material for their albums. VTB have released a number of records since the start, often mixing studio, live and home recordings. Golden Rhythm/Ink Music is their first more or less proper studio album since Amidst The Noise And Twigs back in 2007.

Largely based on the sonic fault-line between Aaron Moore and Daniel Padden, it's also the most focused and driven of VTB's prolific output so far, showcasing the duo's unique musicality and interplay, whilst retaining their trademark eccentricity and humour throughout. It presents rock music as seen through VTB's skewed eye, featuring more of Padden and Moore's drum/guitar combination than on previous albums.

Taking the bizarre energy of their live duo performances into a studio environment, and combining it with VTB's eclectic instrumentation and Clarence Manuelo's singular audio-work, GR/IM shows VTB making their most vital work to date.

El Doom And The Born Electric 'Soundtrack'

    £5.99

Debut album from young veterans of the Norwegian heavy and progressive scenes, fronted by singer, guitarist, writer and producer Ole Petter Andreassen. This is classic, heavy, guitardriven and melodic progressive rock, the playing and production being top notch with a natural mix of solid riffs, intricate instrumental passages and great hooks.

The core of the band, apart from Andreassen, is Hedvig Mollestad on guitar and Hammond organ and brothers Brynjar and Haavard Takle Ohr from El Cuero on lead guitar and drums respectively. Guests include Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen from Elephant9 on bass, Ståle Storløkken from Elephant9 and Supersilent on Hammond, Mikael Lindquist on Hammond and Mellotron and veteran Jon Eberson on guitar.

Jazz guitarist Eberson, now 60 and more vital than ever, arrived at the studio, insisted on not hearing any music, plugged in, burned his way through It's Electric and The Hook and was home in time for an early dinner. Eilertsen and Storløkken is widely reckognised to be two of Norway's top instrumentalists in any category and Håvard Takle Ohr is probably the best rock drummer in the country at the moment, to watch him live is a revelation.

All the material is written by Andreassen, with some help on four of the tracks. He has been involved in around 20 albums and most notably been a member of Thulsa Doom and The Cumshots but this is the first album where he is in total control. He is also owner of Caliban Studio, home to many great sounding Norwegian albums. He has been nominated for four Norwegian Grammys and won two.

Ambitious, epic and grand in scale, In The Country's previous album Whiteout was an artistic triumph. Always a very powerful and exciting live act, it was only natural that a concert album should come at this stage of their career, after three studio albums and a number of Norwegian, European and US tours.

Originally planned as a concert dvd, In The Country invited video director Claus Arthur Breda-Gulbrandsen to bring a crew to film a couple of Norwegian shows in October 2010.

Claus had previously directed two videos for Morten's other band, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra. Not content with merely filming these shows, Claus (and the band as well) had bigger ambitions for a more expanded type of film, of which you can see the quite stunning results on the accompanying dvd, with its mysterious Tarkovsky-like dream sequences mixed with Hipgnosis type of images.

We consider this to be one of the finest music films ever produced in Norway and a treatment rarely given to a jazz band of any origin. Looking like something with a much bigger budget, It needs to be said that this is a labour of love from all involved, and especially the director.

Also watch out for the hidden video after the film has ended. In the meantime, we also decided to make it a part of an ordinary CD and LP package, believing this will actually mean that more people will be able to see and enjoy it.

Apart from selections from all the studio albums, there are three new tracks here including a beautiful interpretation of Mark Knopfler's Brothers In Arms.

Morten Qvenild formed In The Country with fellow music students Roger Arntzen and Pål Hausken at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo in 2003.
They have released three albums, all on Rune Grammofon, This Was The Pace Of My Heartbeat (2005), Losing Stones, Collecting Bones (2006) and Whiteout (2009) to much critical acclaim.

Downbeat called their debut one of the finest and most arresting albums to come out of Europe that year, Mojo said startling,  Straight No Chaser said fantastic and a host of others followed.

Tracks: Afraid, Whiteout, Slow Down, How To Get Acquainted, Kung Home, Brothers In Arms, Torch Fishing, Tree Canopy Walkway.

We are delighted to introduce you to this truly excellent debut album from Phaedra, a new voice on the Norwegian music scene. In fact, we have not been so taken by a debutant since the appearance of Susanna and her magical orchestra back in 2004.

Phaedra is Ingvild Langgård (32), singer, songwriter and artist. Educated from Oslo National Academy Of The Arts in 2006, she has also worked with film, photography, field recordings, installations and vocalbased performance, and her works have been shown in several Norwegian cities as well as in New York (Norwegian Art Now).

Co-produced by Madrugada's Frode Jacobsen, The Sea is the kind of classic, timeless music that doesn't come often these days, a mix of folk and psychedelia with a dash of blues and soul; sacred death hymns and shimmering atmospheres hand in hand with enchanting melodies and crystalline vocals all shrouded in a dark veil of mystery. Maybe the sort of record Joe Boyd would have produced some forty years ago...

The Sea is the first album in a trilogy that constitutes a lyrical and musical cycle, fragments of homegrown mythology, physical and spiritual metamorphosis, death, the other side and losing your soul.

Phaedra was among the first artists confirmed for the esteemed Øya festival 2011.

Ultralyd can be said to operate in a sonic landscape that has as much in common with modern contemporary music as wiith drone metal.

While their vinyl only release Renditions on The Last Record Company label in 2009 and their contribution to our recent Twenty Centuries Of Stony Sleep compilation can easily be described as belonging to the former, Inertiadrome introduces a more rhythm based, rough edged sound.

What you get is an instrumental album of ensemble playing, practically free of soloing, largely driven by Olsen's relentless drumming and Brandsdal's monster heavy bass.

Fourth album from the free spirited power trio that UK magazine The Wire described as a group whose scope of improvisational ideas is breathtaking.

To be able to both listen and react at this level of intensity is a rare gift. Scorch Trio should need no further introduction by now, apart from the significant fact that Chicago based drummer Frank Rosaly has taken over the drum stool from Paal Nilssen-Love and is doing a remarkable job in both keeping the group sound intact while bringing new blood and energy to the proceedings.

Guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten are also on top form in a group that never looks back but continue to explore the possibilities of the classic trio format.

As with the previous albums, Melaza was recorded live in the studio with a minimum of overdubs, this time by Robert Mussi at Bill Laswell's New York studio.

    £5.99

Half Nelson Courtship is the third album and the first on Rune Grammofon from this young trio who musically started out as the younger cousins of Supersilent.

The new album shows a group with a stronger identity, clearer focus, more mature and fully developed musical ideas and directions.

It's actually not so easy to compare them to anyone, but certain aspects of the 1973 period King Crimson concert improvisations wouldn't be too far off the mark. But Puma is first and formeost a contemporary and progressive unit making their own path on the ever growing Norwegian experimental scene mixing improvistaion, jazz, electronics and free rock.

Puma is Øystein Moen (synthesizers and electronics), Stian Westerhus (guitar and electronics) and Gard Nilssen (drums). Recorded and mixed by Jørgen Træen.

Vinyl edition includes voucher for free MP3 download of the whole album.

The music on the long awaited follow-up album to the successful covers only album Melody Mountain has a retro-futuristic edge to it, being darker and more electronic.

The instrumentation and the arrangements are more evolving and varied, the words reflecting upon topics such as inner conflicts, human relations, outer space, stars and planets, journeys to unknown galaxies and more.

In addition to eight brand new compositions there's also room for an absolutely stunning interpretation of Roy Harper's beautiful love song Another Day and Rush's dark Subdivisions. Mariam Wallentin from Wildbirds & Peacedrums is among the guests.

The limited edition double 180g vinyl is cut at 45 rpm from the original 24/96 masters for best possible audio performance.

Ambitious, epic and grand in scale, In The Country's third album Whiteout qualifies to be called their magnum opus. Most of the music was performed and written as a thank you, as is the tradition, after leader Morten Qvenild was awarded Kongsberg Jazzfestival's prestigious Musician Award.

Other receivers have included notables such as Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft and Sidsel Endresen. Qvenild is already established as a writer with a strong signature, original and melodic with elements from many genres of music.

His playing is rich in detail and dynamics but never dominant, and together with bassist Roger Arntzen and drummer Pål Hausken's sensitive and inventive contributions we are in for a treat when it comes to trio interplay. These eight compositions are all between seven and twelve minutes and are given time to develop, much like the best exploratory jazz and progressive rock music.

Another triumph from the band whose previous effort was dubbed one of the finest and most arresting albums to come out of Europe this year by Downbeat.
