Walls Of Dada is Chris Olley from SIX BY SEVEN and Peter G Holmström from The Dandy Warhols. It's a Transatlantic coldwave pop album which has all the analogue warmth and cold war atmosphere of a record coming out in 1982. Chris and Pete first met in 1998 when The Dandy Warhols asked Six By Seven to support them on their first UK tour.

They have been in contact with each other and remained friends ever since and over the years had always talked about making some music together. About a year ago, after hanging out at a Dandy's gig in Nottingham, they made a plan to get something started.

For Chris, and his aversion to making music using computers, the idea from the outset was to create something by simple means so as not to get bogged down by technology and end up sending myriad files and stems across the internet from one computer to the other. In his studio in Nottingham Chris put a drum machine through an amp and synced and sequenced an analogue synth to it and recorded the sounds onto an 8 track recorder.

After adding vocals a Stereo Mix was bounced down and sent over to Portland, Oregon. There, in his home studio, Pete added guitars, bass, synths (and a banjo) to the mix and topped and tailed the songs and sent his own stereo mix back. That was it. No more overdubs were added and there was no heavy mastering or compression or loudness wars were entered into.

A lot of vintage guitars and pedals and synths were used in the process and everything was recorded through amps. This was a throwback to the days of the early eighties when bands started to record on the first commercially available four track recorders and portastudios made by Fostex and Tascam. Because there were only four tracks, a lot of bouncing had to be done and this resulted in hard decision making at an early stage of the recording process and a 'no-going-back' recording, which meant you were committed to something you couldn't change.

This is the process which Chris and Pete wanted to tap into to make Walls Of Dada have that unusual edge that bands these days just don't have anymore because the digital world now provides unlimited space and tracks.

After working on roughly 20 songs across the year the result is an album that sounds like it could have been made in a cold Sheffield or Manchester basement or bedroom back in 1982.

Recorded in Nottingham in Bendigo Thompson's old sparing gym - first heavy weight champion of the world!

This is a psychedelic post rock Anglo- Kraut album laced with heavy beats and jarring guitars and melodic vocals. It has a refreshing open sound as no computers or plug ins were used at any point in the recording process. It's an analogue record made in the same spirit as Neu! or Can made their greatest albums in the 70's.

So much music today is 'fixed' in the computer and over processed in the mastering stages. Not so with this album, it bounces and has dynamics and feels fresh and alive.

six by seven KluBMix33 is a unique album. In April 2013 Chris Olley started his website MuZiK KluB, which was a way of funding and being able to artistically manage his own vision for his musical and creative output. Every month Olley would sell his demo's and his stories and photographs in an exclusive artistic package, handmade and individually signed and numbered to each buyer.

During this period Olley released over 60 songs and several mini albums before re-recording and mixing tracks to compile an album which he felt captured the dark and intense uplifting sound he was looking for, a sound which was to be reminiscent of a setlist from the 80's Blitz Club.

"I wanted to feel lonely and detached when I wrote the music for this record, so it felt like I felt when I was 15, when I first fell in love with music properly. The music of that time was all the early synth stuff and it felt cold and industrial but pure and melodic too. It was real punk. I forced myself into solitude so I could get on with the task of self examination. I wanted it to be six by seven but I wanted it to be free from six by seven and free from the temptation to just follow on from what had gone before. I wanted detatchment, detatchment and tranquility and songs that reminded me of just being who I am, not what people want me to be." CHRIS OLLEY

This record is six by seven firing on all cylinders, albeit with a new sound. They are in a dark basement club, jamming with Bauhaus and Fad Gadget and early Kraftwerk. At times the record is Krautrock and psychedelic at other times sparse and beautifuly melodic and with tracks like the 9 minute 'Stealth Wind' and the gargantuan 8 minute 'Master Race' it is as heavy as or even heavier than any six by seven record before.

And... as promised, everyone who bought a MuZiK KluB release was given a credit on the album as executive producer.

This is a conceptually tight piece of work featuring 8 melodic, super charged brooding epics.

This is an intense, guitar driven album with lyrics inspired by an episode of a BBC TV programme called ‘The Trap’, exploring the concept and definition of freedom, specifically how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, almost robotic, creatures led to today's idea of freedom.

The band recently reformed with original line up which made 2000’s cult album, ‘The Closer You Get’.

Six.By Seven's main man Chris Olley releases the second album in his 'TWELVE' electro/analogue side project.

Originally started in 2000, it was intended to be a concept involving 12 songs released as 6 singles.

However, with an offer of a deal, it became a debut album, released in the US and available only as import to the UK since 2001 via Cargo. 'Be Careful What You Don't Wish For' sees the project taken a step further and features 15 tracks of neo krautrock and post rock comedown.

This album see's Chris getting in touch with his German roots and has everything from beautiful melodic Eno-esque cello and piano instrumentals, through to Georgio Moroder's electronic repetition, krautrock inspired by 70's German bands Harmonia and Cluster, whilst also featuring some of the songwriting Chris was known for in Six.By Seven.

The songs on peveril were written between november 2002 and summer 2004 and never made it onto the 4th studio album “04”. Some of the songs were deemed unsuitable for that album others were mixed differentley and some just didn’t fit in terms of space and content.

Debut solo album from Six.bySeven vocalist and songwriter Chris Olley now at cheap low price for a £5 retail deal.  During Chris Olley’s time in six.byseven he had already released numerous albums under the monkikers of  ‘Twelve’ and ‘’Fuck me USA.’ These were largely experimental and instrumental albums but perhaps now the time had come to release something under his own name. “ It’s all very well making music, hiding behind a project or band name but when you do it under your own name it’s a completely different thing.

To quote Neil Young, I had to at last go about making a solo album, ‘just to see if I could make one.’ " Chris went back to the start, quite literally, “I didn’t have a band and I was going to find it hard to convince new people to begin a new journey to travel down a road of rock n roll road of doom. I picked up an acoustic and tried to find out who I was within music, I didn’t really care if it was right or wrong, good or bad, it just had to be me, whatever that was.” Lyrically and musically this is an open and honest album with clearly defined songwriting steeped in the traditions of American Folk, sometimes dreamy, sometimes tetchy, often feeling solemn and yearning but always cathartic.

Recorded mainly in basements, front rooms on portastudios and various studios over a 6 month period without the use of computers or a single snare drum, the album relies heavily on the sound of vocals, guitars and mellotron. Chris says “Lyrically I was coming to terms with losing my Mother to alcoholism and making the choice to jettison so many friends and change my life for a new start whilst still reflecting on and trying to understand the past. Simple, stripped down and from the heart that’s what these songs needed to be. Whatever they are, I believe they are a piece of my life and me at this time.

Nottingham’s six. by seven, released their first album, The Things We Make to rave reviews in 1998.

Five Peel Sessions followed, an appearance on ‘Later With Jools Holland’ and much touring. The band gained a strong underground following, and released four more albums.

Lead singer and creative force, Chris Olley preferred to shun the limelight, releasing internet only albums of wide ranging music and building valve distortion boxes for a number of famous bands with fellow guitarist, Martin Cooper.

In 2011, Olley formed the drummerless version of six. by seven, macabrely named ‘The Death Of Six By Seven’ with long time original member and Hammond Organ player, James Flower and ex-six. by seven bass player, Pete Stevenson as well as Martin Cooper on guitar.

Gigs followed and so did five singles and an album. After a wrong phone call to a music shop and a chance meeting in London, Olley found himself having a beer with ex Placebo / Boo Radleys drummer Steve Hewitt.

It turned out to be a magical and divine coming together as Hewitt said, “There’s nothing for it, I should throw my drums in the car and come up to Nottingham and get you rocking again.” What followed was four months of rehearsing old songs Olley had written over the last five years, before the band recruited producer, Dan Austin (Massive Attack, Doves, Biffy Clyro) and recorded 9 tracks at the legendary Moles studio in Bath.

This July sees the release of what is arguably six.by seven’s most accomplished album.  Nine songs of pure drumming dynamite, feral guitars, and a string of songs dealing with the human condition and its broken dreams. It’s a new start by a band that refuses to lie down and stop rocking.
