    “Pure psychotropic madness.”

“A screaming head on fire penetrated my chest, jolting me from the universal plane back to earth.” Guitarist/Singer/Sonic Alchemist Dave W’s vivid fever dream ignited The Revenge of Heads on Fire, WHITE HILLS’ latest release, which harnesses the energy of ferocious, hedonistic rock with blissful passages of dark ambience. Exploring themes of mortality, transformation and rebirth, the band reveals a spiritual depth unparalleled in previous works. The roar of fire, swirling of oceans and hallucinogenic visions can be heard throughout the 75-minute journey. From the intrepid prelude “The Instrumental Head” to the closing punk blaze of “Eternity”, the album ebbs and flows, smoldering and seething in the middle with the 21- minute mammoth opus “Don’t Be Afraid”.

“’Don't Be Afraid’ alone makes this an essential listen for fans of contemporary psychedelia.” -All Music

The Revenge of Heads on Fire consummates Dave W’s prototype for the 2007 release on Rocket Recordings, Heads on Fire, later picked up by Thrill Jockey. Six rediscovered songs accompany re-mixed versions of the original material, fulfilling the master arch of the pyre lit long ago. Recorded during the band’s tumultuous early years, the music vibrates with the energy and volatility of a sonic boom. The album will be released on Heads on Fire Industries, distributed worldwide via Cargo Records.

Batteries is the self-titled debut solo album by Steven Clark (professionally known as Sci-Fi Steven) from Glasgow's Punk/Disco legends bis.

An exercise in short, sharp new-wave snappiness, Steven has ramped up the guitars and latent aggression to create a new sound which has already been compared to Devo playing Queens of The Stone Age or vice-versa.

Nagging melodies abound with some darker twists and a cynical sense of positivity informs the lyrics.

There's plenty of pop hooks for the bis faithful, but Batteries is an angrier beast. Contains anthemic lead track "Batteries" and the viciously wonky pop of "Human Requirements.

Tachys is a new duo consisting of Tobias Wilner (Blue Foundation, New York United, Ghost Society, Bichi) and Jonas Bjerre (Mew, Apparatjik).

Equal parts pop and experimentation, their sound incorporates a unique blend of genres. With their catchy songwriting, Tachys uses their melodies as a guideline through a mix of modular synthesis exploration, quasi-psychedelic pop, synth/chillwave, and nostalgic swirling shoegazey guitars. It all progress into a blossoming dream-pop, filled with layers of textural electronics, catchy melodies and driving beats.

Tachys eponymous debut album is the culmination of roughly two years of work. Tobias Wilner and Jonas Bjerre, two childhood friends who have collaborated oftentimes in the past, but never in this capacity, found themselves having studios right next to each other during a period of lockdown in Copenhagen. Having talked about doing a project together for years, they finally found the time to do so.

Creating this album has been something of a musical journey, in which the only rule was artistic exploration and experimentation. It’s a versatile album, with songs coming together in different ways, from cutting up things made on old PCs with software that was never released in alpha versions, to using modern production tools, recording strings, flutes, piano, modular synthesizers, shoe-gazy guitars through long chains of effect pedals and processing found sounds. The result is hard to box in. Sometimes eerie and soundscape-y, sometimes joyful and direct. The two of them take turns singing lead, adding harmonies to each other, embellishing on each others stories and experiments, and on occasion singing in unison.

Most everything on the album is handled by themselves, with the exception of drums on the song ‘I Wish I Could Have Known You’, featuring avant-garde drummer Frederico Ughi, known for his work with Daniel Carter, William Parker, and New York United. And the song ‘You Can Be My Guide’ features LA-based Malaysian singer Yuna, a phenomenal pop- and RnB artist.
Yuna is mostly known for her work with Usher, Pharrell, Tyler, The Creator and Jhene Aiko.

Jonas Bjerre is most well known for his work with Danish alternative rock band Mew, but also does work as a composer for film and television. He is also in Apparatjik, a music and art collective consisting of himself, Magne Furuholmen of A-ha, Guy Berryman of Coldplay, and producer and songwriter Martin Terefe. As a vocalist, he has featured with many artists, including Duran Duran, Kimbra, Purity Ring, Blue Foundation, Silo, Molina, RAC, and Carly Paradis. He also works in visual art and animation.

Tobias Wilner best known as bandleader, producer and lead vocalist from the band Blue Foundation and his several other musical projects like New York United, Ghost Society and Bichi. He has performed and recorded with Mark Kozelek, Erika Spring (Au are our Simone), Trentemøller, Jonas Bjerre, Daniel Carter, Federico Ughi, DJ Krush, Mew, Sara Savery, Sonya Kitchel, Findlay Brown, Apparatjik, and others.

His music and songs has been sampled and covered by artist like Young Thug, French Montana, Machine Gun Kelly, Zeds Dead to name a few. Tobias Wilner also work as a visual artist and film composer.

  • Gant-Man 'Distorted Sensory' Vinyl LP

    Teklife

    Gant-Man 'Distorted Sensory' Vinyl LP

    £15.99

Legendary Chicagoan General Juke aka Gant-Man returns with Distorted Sensory, his brand new acid house adventure. A longtime veteran who's been behind the decks since before he was even a teen, he's been an essential part of Chicago dance music history since the Dance Mania days in the mid 90s, and a major pioneer in jumpstarting the juke movement that followed.

This new single, and his debut solo release on the Teklife imprint explores the time honored tradition of jacking, channeling the very essence of house music though a modern lens. Employing an enigmatic 303 bassline that mutates and breathes as if it were alive, Gant plays malicious melodies that run up and down octaves in a freaky, hallucinatory manner. Squelchy synth movements are met by eerie FM tones, reminiscent of Cajmere's classic Chicago staple the Percolator. A rugged 909 drum kit bangs the track along in true jacking fashion, making it the perfect tool for shaking the floors of dark, sweaty warehouses.

In addition to the original, two of the UK's finest contribute remixes as well. Hyperdub boss Kode9 puts things into overdrive with his 160 BPM warped vision of Gant's acid, sliced up to appeal more to the footworkers and fans of psycho tempos. Dubstep pioneer Loefah strips back the original percussion and lets the 303s float over a cloud of deep sub bass, adorned with lovely splashes of rolling snares and micro percussion.

With an array of stone cold classics under his belt, from ghetto house anthem Juke Dat Girl to his brilliant collabs with the late DJ Rashad Heaven Sent and Juke Dat Juke Dat, Gant-Man is a true renaissance man.

For over 20 years, he's consistently shown the world the complexity that makes up his city's dance culture, never sticking to one area or tempo.

Distorted Sensory is a beautiful celebration of Chicago house music, a return to its true raw design, and a reminder of just how timeless an art form it really is.

Rudolf de Borst: Vocals, Bass, Keys, Guitar / Ben Cole: Drums, Percussion, Vocals / Christian Livingstone: Guitars, Keys / Philip Somervell: Guitars, Vocals - Six years hath passed since the last release action from NewZild's most noted crafters of classic rock.

A lengthy period of quiet has been broken, with a stash of fresh riffing & renewed wailing. What change might have come to bear in a half dozen years? Is the DATSUN tribe more world weary, more savvy, more learned...? Is all this on evidence in the capturing of the newly birthed sonic heft and hooks? Have these geezers still got what it takes?

The exhibit - Album No.7 - "Eye to Eye". The stylistic grasp of these 11 tunes wrap the locomotive chug of classic Ian Gillan/Ritchie Blackmore helmed Deep Purple, seasoned nicely with generous servings of Jon Lord keyboard surge, to some updated glam boogie power chord-age, in a manner not dissimilar to the production shenanigans Josh Homme (that QOTSA fella) applies to his various projects.

Has Datsun vocal main man Dolf de Borst always come across like some bastard offspring of Marc Bolan and Alice Cooper? There's some otherworldly fantastical floating folk glam vocal melodies wafting in & out of this selection of tracks. And the Cooper sneer & snarl rears its head, in those tunes of a more heart pounding nature...

The guitar effects and greater keyboard dosage have peppered this clutch of new tunes with more flavours on the menu. Lest us not ferget the master of the cabin fever mongrel pedal electronic mechanics, and frequently featured lead Datsun instrumentalist, Christian Livingstone. It can be imagined the man has been labouring intently, in a wintry lock downed Northern hemisphere, fine tuning freaked fuzz frequencies, sci-fi squeal & spazz, and a host of other soaring dogfighting & dive-bombing tones, fer the instrumental breaks and beds for this album. The inherent rok dramatics and attack are the responsibilities Mr Livingstone bears.

The dynamics and tempo rest in the mitts of them other Datsun three. "Windmill" Phil Somervell gets to bring his rhythmic geetar chops & noted arm flailin', to underscore the light & shade of the riffage, knowing whens to slash or slug, pinch or punch. Ben "Poundin' Soul" Cole machine guns the rolls, and hits the timing twists & turns when required.

Master de Borst locks in his bass walkin', & talkin', stuttering & strutting w/his fellow rhythm men.. An album entrenched in the past, remodelled for the future, one unknown & uncertain more than ever.

Is Let it Burn the greatest Goat track the band have ever made? The band think it is the best song they have written. The label have not stopped going on about it since they heard it. And now you can listen to Let it Burn when it is released as a ltd edition 7' single on 25 May.

Let it Burn was written specifically for the climatic scene in the short movie Killing Gävle, a The Guardian produced film directed by the very talented Joe Fletcher about the famous Gävle Goat in Sweden which every year local custodians of Gävle try to protect a giant straw goat that is built for the town every Christmas being burnt down by mischievous pagans.

Obviously Goat's music was the obvious to soundtrack the film - their back catalogue is used throughout the film but up to now it was the only place you could hear a segment of the 6 minute+ fuzz groove of Let it Burn but now thanks to Rocket Recordings it can be heard in all its glory.

Not only that, but you get a brand new b-side, and like most recent Goat b-sides it reveals another exploratory sound to the bandsworld music'. Friday Pt.1 is a 4 minute excerpt from an organically evolving, cosmic-jazz, studio jam.

Goat play two shows this summer, supporting Foo Fighters at Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium on 5 June and they will be headlining Stage 2 at London's Citadel Festival on 15 July.

    Fortuna POP!

The Spook School 'Try To Be Hopeful'

    £9.99

The Spook School return with their brand new album. Try To Be Hopeful is brim full of noisy, tuneful and triumphant queer pop songs about identity, sexuality and being awesome.

The Spook School are Anna Cory (bass/vocals), Adam Todd (guitar / vocals), Nye Todd (guitar / vocals) and Niall McCamley (drums). Since forming in 2012 they've become increasingly involved with the DIY queer punk scene, taking inspiration from the passionate, like-minded people they've met along the way, and from bands such as Martha, Joanna Gruesome, Trust Fund and Tuff Love. Citing influences including Buzzcocks, T-Rex and the noisier end of C86, the new album is louder, bolder, fuller-sounding and captures more of their live sound'aided and abetted by producer MJ of Hookworms. It follows The Spook School's critically acclaimed debut 'Dress Up' which received plaudits from the Guardian, Uncut ('a rewarding, multi-layered debut') and Loud and Quiet ('this is music for the young and disillusioned, but identifiable to anyone who's ever been frustrated by the grievances of identity and growing up.')

The Spook School have since seen their music used on TV, having recorded the theme tune for BBC 3 series 'Badults'. They have also toured the US, where they became the subject of a Rolling Stone documentary and met Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! Lyrically, its more direct than their debut, exploring issues around gender and identity, the destructive stereotypes that are generally accepted as the norm, and the difficulties of fighting them and building alternatives. Nye was undertaking his own personal journey during the making of the record too, beginning to really embrace his trans identity and starting testosterone therapy, a side effect of which meant that his voice kept changing throughout the recording process. The Spook School are a band in the most communal sense of the word. Songwriting is split between all 4 members, giving a different perspective and energy to each song. 'Richard and Judy' talks about conservatism and how easy it is to accept that this is what 'normal' is and how schools are 'such horrible little places of enforced heteronormativity'.

The opening track, 'Burn Masculinity' (on a new Plan-It-X Records comp), is an empowering anthem for our time that challenges male privilege. The first single proper, 'I Want To Kiss You', captures the excitement and anticipation of meeting someone, thinking they're the most interesting person ever and not wanting to wait to see them again. 'It's totally about kissing people,' concludes Nye. Perhaps the standout track is 'Binary', a song about questioning gender norms, something that Nye's experience of coming out as being trans has forced him to think about..'I'm so proud and fortunate to know quite a few amazing people who openly identify as non-binary, genderqueer or other non-binary identities - they exist in the world on their own terms and consistently challenge something that so many people just take as read. This song has quickly become a live favourite, prompting massed choruses of the 'I am bigger than a hexadecimal' line.

Try To Be Hopeful is the sound of a band growing up, embracing their identities, and taking charge at the world. The Spook School are the shot of optimism we've been hoping for.

Scott Hill, lead vocals/guitar of Fu Manchu comments: "Playing Roadburn back in 2003 was a blast! It was the year before we put out "Start The Machine' and we played a couple of songs from it live for the first time on that tour.

One of the songs that's on this live record, 'I Wanna Be,' is a different arrangement than what ended up on the final studio release. We're stoked that the show was recorded and that people will get to hear it.

Cold In Berlin 'Rituals Of Surrender'

First vinyl pressing is limited to 500 copies in Transparent Red and Black smoke vinyl. Included is a free CD and download of the whole album.

Main CD package is a 4 panel digipack.

London rockers, Cold In Berlin return with their new album 'Rituals Of Surrender'. Nine slabs of fuzz laden, goth infused doom crossed with post punk attitude and vibe.

Over nine songs you are submerged into the dense, heavy sounds of their fourth album: A witch crawls from the ocean as the world is born looking for a new life, a woman recalls the painful love she needed to feel alive, a man cracks wide open looking for secrets, and love burns two desperate lovers - the songs are filled with heroic and overwhelming loss wrapped in the hope of what comes next.

Produced with gritty clarity and volume by Wayne Adams (Green Lung - Woodland Rites) Rituals of Surrender opens with the grinding, hypnotic pulse of The Power and the apocalyptic rise of Dark Days, the record twists and turns as guitars crash, tempos warp and vocalist Maya stalks your thoughts with her mesmeric vocals. The rituals continue to build through Avalanche and Monsters, an edgy industrial throb and a sweeping prayer. Side A closes with Frantic a frenetic shard of fractured shellac.

When the cut-and-thrust dies down, the album reveals the band at their most fragile. The haunting schadenfreude of Your Body//My Church is a beautiful, desperate love song nestled between the ceremonial Temples and the stoner trip of Shadowman. The album-closer Sacred Ground soars from a place of Lovecraftian foreboding towards an explosion of cinematic-doom.

Their grandest and most poignant piece to date.

‘We’re the oldest new band in the world,’- Chris Buck, Guitar / Cardinal Black

They say that good things come to those who wait. A little over a year after their launch, you could say that Cardinal Black are testament to the power of patience, thought and persistence.

A debut #1 single and E.P.; a first gig to a hometown capacity crowd at Cardiff Castle; back-to-back sold-out Academy tours with Myles Kennedy, then The Struts; a highly-anticipated debut album due this Autumn, heralded by a live set recording in the Beatles’ legendary Studio Two at Abbey Road in London. An eventful 12 months for any band. It takes years, so the saying goes, to become an overnight success...

Rewind to 2010 and the Welsh-born trio of Tom HollisterChris Buck and Adam Roberts were riding a wave of hype, hotly-tipped by some of the biggest names in rock - most notably Steve Winwood who invited the band to record at his storied Wincraft Studios.
A triumphant live set at Sonisphere was followed by a flight across the Atlantic to begin work on their first record, with veteran manager Alan Niven (Guns N’ Roses) at the helm. The lure of the U.S. proved irresistible to the nascent trio but, as is often the case, expectation rarely mirrors reality and the band struggled to adapt to the new country, culminating in singer Tom Hollister unexpectedly calling time on the band before returning to the U.K. “We tried to do the acrimonious split; creative differences and all that. We then quickly realised we were fairly reliant on one another,” says Buck.

In the decade that followed, the lifelong friends cut their own individual paths whilst remaining close. Most notable has been the well-earned rise of guitarist Chris Buck, named in 2019 as ‘Best New Guitarist in the World’, who has forged a reputation as one of the most inventive and recognisable guitar players in music; winning plaudits from peers and the industry’s most iconic players alike.
Drummer Adam Roberts found work as a first-call session player, whilst vocalist Tom Hollister moved into tour management - the three maintaining their musical connection by sporadically meeting up to perform together. It was just a matter of time then, before they were ready to make new music again.
The writing and recording of new material began in 2020, under the name Cardinal Black, bolstered by the arrival of bassist Sam Williams.

After announcing themselves with debut single ‘Tell Me How It Feels’ in May 2021, it was less than 24 hours before the track toppled Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds to take the #1 spot in the iTunes Rock Single Chart.

Their 4-track eponymous E.P. followed that summer, also claiming the #1 spot on both the iTunes Rock Album Chart and Amazon Rock Best Sellers Chart within 12 hours of its release. The E.P. would also go on to break into the Top Ten of the iTunes Album Chart, peaking at #8. They may have taken the scenic route but Cardinal Black are finally here, and they've got plenty of stories to tell.

  • Tuk Smith & the Restless Hearts 'Ballad Of A Misspent Youth'

    MRG/Gypsy Rose Records

Tuk Smith & the Restless Hearts 'Ballad Of A Misspent Youth'

    £8.99

Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts is an American rock band from Nashville founded and fronted by former Biters leader Tuk Smith, originally from Atlanta, now living in Nashville. The band released their debut single "What Kinda Love" on January 10, 2020 and were also added as an opening act for The Stadium Tour with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe on the same day.

Then came the onset of Covid 19. “When the pandemic hit, it was like hitting the reset button on my music career” recalls Tuk, “everything got taken away…album campaign, stadium tour, record deal. The world was in lockdown, and the only way to escape was to throw myself into writing. My thoughts began exploring the past, and the inspiration for the songs just came in tidal waves.”

The new collection is a rock ‘n roll silver lining that came out of the solitude and reflection of the pandemic. Ballad Of A Misspent Youth is the new single (and subsequent album of the same name) released summer of 2022 on Tuk’s new record label MRG, through Virgin Music.

Tuk explains, “I decided to make a rock and roll record for me and what I like because there was no label, there was no committee involved…just me and my stories. I wanted to create a setting and an authentic feeling about everything. I reunited with long-time friend Dan Dixon and recorded these songs in his garage studio, and there is a purity to the work that came from all the circumstances of that time.”

Growing up as an outsider in rural Georgia, Tuk found solace in hardcore punk acts like Black Flag and The Exploited. From there, Smith branched out into exploring seventies New York bands like The Dead Boys and New York Dolls, which lead him across the sea where he embraced first-wave British acts like The Buzzcocks and the Clash. Smith wasn’t just a casual fan of these acts, he was obsessed with them and traced their lineage with fervent dedication. “I was always into the Clash growing up and Mick Jones’ favorite band was Mott The Hoople, so through the years I ended up developing a love of the first wave of British glam, power pop and things like that,” he explains.

Soon Smith was forming his own acts, touring relentlessly and building a following with his high-energy live shows, including his tour of duty as lead singer for the Biters, who he fronted for nearly a decade. He offers “Then after being on the road for years, I had a reckoning about where I was at and the future ahead. …I realized the only way to achieve something meaningful was to be a good songwriter…that clicked. I went on a musical diet where I stripped the obscure stuff away, and I really started focusing on the greats. When I started clicking that it was just about the songs, things changed. I had already put my 10,000 hours in the van to play in the dive clubs, but then I put my 10,000 hours into figuring out how to write. I also started working with other songwriters. I humbled myself… it was an education, like going to school.”

Tuk elaborates, “I wanted to kind of branch out musically and do different things, and I figured to go solo would be better. My manager actually suggested I call my new band “The Restless Hearts” and that's what he would call me all the time. It was the title of a Biters song that people loved and I’d seen a few restless hearts tattoos at our shows along the way… and so Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts was born. I was in a period where I changed everything including the way I lived my daily life. I experimented with different ways to tap into positive/creative energy…it was an evolving overall process (and still is).”

Tuk summarizes, “Things used to be about debauchery, and now they’re more about dedication. I mean, I was always driven, but I was sometimes focusing on the wrong things. Now I focus on the music and the craftsmanship of writing and producing and performing.“

    Fortuna POP!

    Evans The Death 'Expect Delays'

Evans the Death return with their second album Expect Delays in March via Fortuna POP! (Europe) and Slumberland (USA). Recorded again with producer Rory Atwell (Test Icicles, Warm Brains), the album bristles with an underlying tension and veers from rip-roaring noise to quiet contemplation, underpinned by Katherine Whitaker's extraordinary voice.

Still barely out of their teens, there's a tremendous sense across Expect Delays of a band coming in to their own, honing a plethora of influences to make a sound that is uniquely them. Each song on the album has a different feel to it: some of them are melodic and pretty; some of them heavy and dissonant; and some of them are, to quote guitarist Dan Moss, 'a bit strange'. While retaining the post-punk and 90s alt-rock inspired elements that peppered their debut, the music is more expressive, heavier and more experimental, and the lyrics more nuanced, the sense of despair leavened by sharp wordplay and humour.

The unsettling undercurrent of melancholy and hopelessness that pervades the record has its roots in the last three years, spent eking out an existence on the poverty line in Cameron's Britain. On the cusp of finishing school when their debut was released, the band rejected the opportunity of higher education in favour of focusing on music, a decision that backfired when the album failed to take off in the way they'd expected, leaving them with a succession of minimum wage jobs and unemployment benefits interviews. As guitarist Dan Moss relates, the album is about 'being in London and feeling hopeless and a bit lost. Not having any money, relationships falling apart, things just not connecting or going anywhere and getting absolutely wasted all the time.'

Named after the undertaker in Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, the band's 2012 eponymous debut saw critical acclaim from the likes of Q, Uncut and Artrocker as well as radio play on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music and XFM. Following the departure of bassist Alanna McArdle to Joanna Gruesome and drummer Rob Mitson the band regrouped around the core of brothers Dan and Olly Moss and singer Katherine Whitaker for the recording of Expect Delays. Previously songwriting duties had been the preserve of the elder Moss brother, Dan, but with Olly now bringing his own songs to the table, the brothers resolved to switch between guitar and bass on a song-by-song basis. Drummer James Burkitt was recruited from Leeds'band The ABC Club to complete a new lean and taut four-piece.

Exploding into life with live favourite Intrinsic Grey, its incessant rhythms and squalling guitars a feral cry from the heart, Expect Delays contains more than its fair share of heart-stopping moments. The ebullient Sledgehammer is following by Idiot Button (named after the buttons at street crossings that don't actually do anything) and what is perhaps the key lyric on the album of 'I can't explain these gaps in my employment record / I'm an idiot for trying'. As if they were demonstrating their virtuosity and versatility the Stereolab-esque title track Expect Delays is followed by the grunge-heavy Enabler, which in turn is followed by the achingly beautiful ballad Waste Of Sunshine, while elsewhere the (late) Beatles-y Don't Laugh At My Angry Face deals with alcoholism and a relationship at its absolute bitter end. The album ends with a 'secret' track Don't Beat Yourself Up ('we would have listed it but I didn't want to have 13 tracks' - Dan), written on the night Lou Reed died.

More ambitious and focused than their previous record, whilst sacrificing none of their spontaneity and vitality, Expect Delays is a supremely inventive and intelligently crafted album from a band who have suffered for their art, and used that experience to inform and nourish their work. Expect no more delays, Evans The Death have arrived.
