Limited edition 180g red vinyl LP. 'The missing link between Free and The Black Keys' Paul Elliott, Q Magazine

Mojo Magazine : This is the sound of Sweet Crisis. Formed in Cambridge in 2015, after decades of friendship, they have drawn from years of shared experience and a well of hundreds of songs to create the debut album Tricks On My Mind.

Sweet Crisis seek to balance all their inclinations and influences - like Free or Lenny Kravtiz, nothing is off the table if music sounds right. The key influences for Sweet Crisis are wide-ranging, from the classic rock and soul music of the '70s - The Rolling Stones, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Donny Hathaway, Humble Pie - to The Verve and Massive Attack, The Black Keys and Jack White.

The iconic 70s sound combined with modern pioneers shape and inform this modern rock band's sound. And with this wide-ranging DNA incorporating just the right amount of funk, soul and pop along the way, their album celebrates both modern and classic vibes.

Leo and Piers write all of the songs for Sweet Crisis and have recently swelled their ranks with Matt Dudurym on bass, Dom Briggs-Fish on keyboards and Joe Taylor on drums - Now a well oiled machine that's been running since early 2019 - together they've created a timeless and energetic record. Teklife Records are ready to drop their third release: New Start by Taso. The 7 track LP features collaborations with DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn, Gant-Man, DJ Tre, DJ Manny, DJ Taye and DJ Earl. New Start follows on from a highly coveted vinyl edition, critical acclaim and strong DJ Support for Open Your Eyes by DJ Earl.

Once again, the spirit of collaboration is a key element: Teklife is a closely connected group of friends, working together harmoniously, and pushing each other to greater heights and depths through a shared love of footwork music. Smoke Dat Green, Taso's collaboration with DJ Earl, was featured on Open Your Eyes, and now Taso himself takes centre stage for the next instalment, presenting unreleased classics alongside brand new footwork sounds.

An accomplished DJ and MC, Taso frequently appears alongside Spinn at Teklife showcases all over the world. But despite a busy touring schedule, Taso never stops making beats. A multi-instrumentalist with a degree in audio engineering, Taso fuses raw musical talent with technical expertise. Since January this year, he has released an impressive 8 volumes of the Cold Heat EP series, bringing together a whole range of musical styles and moods through his MPC at 160 BPM.

This versatility and willingness to draw inspiration from different sources is evident throughout the New Start LP. The title track is sultry and soulful, with Rashad and Spinn's masterful influence clearly present. Don't Get Mad provides a stark contrast: a dancefloor-orientated hype track featuring an on point vocal by Gant-Man. Bussin featuring DJ Manny and DJ Tre sounds like a love letter from footwork to jungle music.

Over on the flip side, we start off with AM Track: another beautifully crafted classic featuring DJ Rashad and Dj Spinn. In the Green Room featuring Dj Taye is a muscular, speaker-rattling West Coast jam, and Murda Bass takes its cue from golden era UK Dubstep. The heavily - filtered final notes of De Capo Al Coda featuring DJ Earl round off a diverse but consistently high quality outing from Taso and the Teklife family.

Message from Taso: 'Thank you and much respect for supporting Teklife music. Without you there is no us. This record is dedicated to DJ Rashad and his family.'

  • Cosey Fanni Tutti - Original Soundtrack Recordings from the film 'Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes'

    Conspiracy International

Cosey Fanni Tutti - Original Soundtrack Recordings from the film 'Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes'

    £12.99

Cosey Fanni Tutti has announced details of a new album, Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes, her original soundtrack recordings for Caroline Catz’ acclaimed film about Derbyshire. Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally on 16 September 2022 via the artist’s own label, Conspiracy International.

In 2018, Cosey Fanni Tutti was commissioned to write the soundtrack to director and actor Caroline Catz’s acclaimed, intimate portrayal of the composer, musician and sonic experimentalist, Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001).

Best known for her groundbreaking work on the 1963 Doctor Who theme tune, Derbyshire was instrumental in giving easy access to and rewiring a nation’s attitudes towards electronic music. Working within the often-stifling confines of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, her experimentalism - which saw her manipulating magnetic tape, found sounds and electronics - is only now being given full credit for the immeasurable impact it has had on the way we hear the world.

The new album includes the audio explorations and experiments that lead Cosey Fanni Tutti to the final soundtrack for Catz’ film. From the 4-minute long ‘Cornet Lament’ to the humorous ‘Snuff Chorus’ (which references an addiction that Derbyshire had for snuff), the album is a journey through both Delia and Cosey’s practise – Fanni Tutti spent time researching Derbyshire’s archives (both musical and the more personal ephemera of her life) to create an audio world for Catz’s depiction of the artist to inhabit.

Fanni Tutti explains, “The compositions are inspired by my research of the Delia Derbyshire audio archive, Delia's original compositional notes and techniques which in combination with my admiration and love of Delia’s work provided a way to integrate her style and approach to music with my own. An alliance of our sensibilities.”

The new album follows the release of Cosey Fanni Tutti’s new book, RE-SISTERS: The Lives and Recordings of Delia Derbyshire, Margery Kempe and Cosey Fanni Tutti which is due to be published on Faber on 18 August.

The book and the soundtrack recordings are intrinsically linked – Cosey’s research into Derbyshire coincided with her discovery of Margery Kempe and while working on the film, she found herself struck by how Derbyshire, Kempe and Fanni Tutti’s own life experiences felt intertwined. In the book, for the first time, Cosey Fanni Tutti explains her own processes creating music, an invaluable insight her artistic life.

The music was composed, performed and produced by Cosey Fanni Tutti in Twickenham Studio 3, London and Studio 47 in Norfork, with vocals by Cosey Fanni Tutti and Caroline Catz, alongside the voice of Delia Derbyshire.

Musician, artist and author Cosey Fanni Tutti has continually challenged boundaries and conventions for four decades. As a founding member of the hugely influential avant-garde band Throbbing Gristle, as one half of electronic pioneers Chris and Cosey, and as an artist channelling her experience in pornographic modelling and striptease, her work on the margins has come to reshape the mainstream.

Her first solo album, Time To Tell (1983) was followed by 2019’s Tutti and her debut book, Art Sex Music, was published in 2017.

    Limb 'Terminal'

    £13.99

Deluxe LP package. 180g transparent white and cosmic purple haze vinyl, gatefold sleeve, printed lyric inner and free download. Strictly limited to 500 copies.

Terminal'follows hot on the heels of Limb's self-titled debut of 2014, but takes an enormous leap forward. Perhaps it's the result of playing across the UK on tour with labelmates Black Moth, and the introduction of new drummer Tom Mowforth (ex Uncle Acid) but Limb are now more explosive than ever before. Where the debut showcased their thick, loping, and stripped-down sound, 'Terminal' cranks up the sonics, mashes the grooves, and ups the filth quotient to truly corrosive levels.

In their quest to take things to the next planet, Limb hooked up with legendary extreme metal producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, Evile, etc.). A bold move, but together they've created a monolithic statement of intent. 'Terminal' is a down-tuned and dirty barrage of monumental riffs, in fact it sounds like worlds exploding.

Keeping all the mammoth groove that is Limb's trademark, Terminal'ups the tempos and infuses it all with a thick, stoner vibe.

The guitars are all roiling fuzz. The bass is low, warm and weighty. The drums pound, and vocalist Rob Hoey's roar resounds through it all, guttural but articulate. This album is guaranteed to blow your ears, speakers, and minds.

Recognising Limb's love of both stoner dirge and glam stomp, Russ Russell has described the band's sound as GoatSlade', and we can see why. Buried in the dirt is a cosmic boogie, which pays more than a nod to the decade of stacked platform boots without ever feeling retro.

Right from the opening double whammy of 'Three Snake Leaves' and 'Ghost Dance', you're propelled into a maelstrom that never lets up. The riffs come layered, thick, and fast, from the fuzzy throb of Dawn Raiders'to the off-kilter groove of Spoils of a Portrait King', marking the halfway point with its monstrous, doomy outro. The second half of the album contains Limb's take on a traditional murder ballad, Down by the Banks', as well as the chaotic hardcore of Mortuary Teeth'. The whole thing ends with Cocytus', the soundtrack to a voyage across the eponymous river of dead souls that encircles Hell, complete with a hypnotic riff ending.

It's an album which can easily hold it's own against Yob's, Conan's The Swords'  of this world at the same time as ploughing its own singular furrow.

Thematically the album addresses the prospect of absolute destruction and the possibility of life thereafter, which is echoed in the album's artwork, a startling retro-futuristic collage by Cur3es (responsible for the art of FuManchu's Gigantoid'). It conveys the album's mood perfectly: the familiar juxtaposed with the unknown, a world where nothing is quite as it should be.

Watch the skies. Terminal is set to land on September 11th.

Available on Heavyweight Vinyl LP  + MP3 Card and CD.

Recorded at Soup Studios with producer Simon Trought at the helm, and inspired by the psycho-geography of walks in North London woods and in the forgotten grey hinterland of the city's back streets, Comet Gain's seventh album Paperback Ghosts comes soaked in autumn melancholy. Tender-hearted but not miserable, defiant but not angry, it maintains the delicate balance that has always been Comet Gain's strength.

The album is about ghosts: the half-forgotten spectres of lost loves; the people who live inside their own sepia-tinted memories; the mystical phantom presence of previous owners retained by used books, the paperbacks haunted by old fingerprints. Blending psychedelia, folk-rock, garage muscle and 4am sadness, the songs draw on the esoteric that lies behind the ordinary. All contain a hope or sweetness. Sad Love and other Short Stories is about being haunted by memories of a lost, unrequited love, while in An Orchid Stuck in Her Throat a living ghost reflects on a life of missed chances. Stranger still is Confessions of a Daydream, wherein a mystic mod magician wanders Limehouse conjuring up the ghosts of Margaret Thatcher and flame haired 50s witch goddess Marjorie Cameron to wage a perpetual psychic war in the phantom back streets of broken London, before the defiantly undead John McKeown (The Yummy Fur / The 1990s) pops up at the end to intone some words of wisdom.

Comet Gain are David Charlie Feck (vocals, guitar), Ben Phillipson (guitar), Rachel Evans (vocals), ex-Morrissey/The Meteors drummer Woodie Taylor (percussion), Anne Laure Guillain (keyboards) and new recruit, Clientele bassist James Hornsey ' a motley group of like-minded romantics, taking pride in an abject failure to care about the normal band model. Inspired at times by early Creation Records, Television Personalities and mod culture, drawing from the same ideals as Dexys, The Style Council and Vic Godard and from the lineage of The Velvet Underground, The Byrds and the 13th Floor Elevators, their mystic anarchist principles blend French New Wave with English kitchen-sink heart. For years they have drifted through scenes picking up people and emotional ties - from Riot Grrrl to acid punks, C86 to lo-fi - yet somehow outliving their peers and in turn inspiring a younger generation of DIY musicians like The Cribs, Love Is All, Veronica Falls, and Crystal Stilts.

On each album they record, Comet Gain bring together their myriad of influences, creating a cohesive aesthetic between sound, artwork, liner notes and ideas. "Paperback Ghosts" is no different, offering us a glimpse into a haunted half-world with its strings, yearning harmonies, 12-string acoustic guitars and half-focused vision of pianos in reverb, while remaining at heart a pop record, a richly textured affirmation of Comet Gain's twenty-year anti-career.

Teenage Waitress 'Love & Chemicals' Vinyl LP - Violet Transparent 180g

    £20.49

Love and Chemicals is the debut album from Southampton based singer / songwriter Teenage Waitress aka Daniel J. Ash.

In Daniel's own words 'Love and Chemicals plays like a collection of short stories or vignettes. I wanted to create something of a musical patchwork quilt with all sorts of different textures, styles and emotions. I had been writing music for a guitar - based indie band for many years but these songs were my first written with a computer.

I loved the freedom of being able to write and experiment with a whole range of different instruments from the accordion to drum machines, from the kazoo to the spoons - they're all in there somewhere and can really help with setting the scene with some of the stories on the album.

I really wanted to work outside my comfort zone both musically and lyrically.  It's by far the best thing I've ever done and I'm very excited to see where I can go next.'

A 12 track raw explosion of contagious synth based indie pop.

This colourful album features the previous singles I Don't Like This Party', The Mess You Made Me Make'You Ain't Got It Bad (feat. Blue Canary)'and I'm Leaving Berlin', songs which have all enjoyed recent praise and airplay from the likes of Radio X and BBC London.

    Barrie Cadogan
has fronted Nottingham's inspired garage-surf-soul outfit Little Barrie since 1999, and, after moving to London in 2000 to work in a Denmark Street guitar-shop, has developed a reputation as the premier go-to alt-rock guitar wing-man for the likes of Primal Scream, Johnny Marr, Morrissey, Edwyn Collins, Damo Suzuki, Paul Weller (Little Barrie were the backing band on his '22 Dreams'album), Spiritualized, Anton Newcombe and The Chemical Brothers, amongst many others.

The Cobra Lamps is Barrie's first solo project and the self-titled EP . Word of The Cobra Lamps reached Anton Newcombe, singer of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and owner of his own A'Recordings label. 'I loved the way, not just the records he does, but the way he puts them out and the way they're presented, the packaging and the artwork,' Barrie enthuses, and Newcombe loved his EP in return.

Hence the EP's release in July, although there are no live dates planned for The Cobra Lamps as yet. Barrie sees the project as an outlet he can dip into to indulge his more esoteric side every now and then.Checking out of his day job for a while, Barrie's in a strange, beautiful place. T Shirt designed by Unexpected Specter (@unexpectedspecter on instagram)

Ex People are Laura Kirsop: Vocals, Calum Gunn: Guitar, Edward White: Bass and Vicki Dawson: Drums.

Emerging from the London DIY scene in 2015 are stoner sludge four-piece Ex People, the latest in a line of bands seeking to push the heavy template yet further.

'Bird' was recorded with Wayne Adams (Vodun, USA Nails, Death Pedals, Casual Nun) at Bear Bites Horse Studios, and he's managed to perfectly capture the visceral weight of their sound, a startling amalgam of super filthy fuzz thick riffs, grunge, noise rock and stoner, combined with a punk attitude.

Taking their cue from bands as diverse as Electric Wizard, Bardo Pond, Harvey Milk and Kylesa, along with 90s sludge such as the Melvins (yet still managing to sound cohesive) the ten tracks that make up 'Bird', combine stoner hooks and soaring vocals with a crushing heaviness.

Add to that some thumping motorik beats (almost like a heavy 'Neu' at times), shot through with an ever-present melodic sensibility, and you have a band that once again shows that when it comes to heavy music, all gates are open.

Drawing on apocalyptic and dystopian themes, 'Over' tells the story of a planet colliding with the earth, over a driving, crunching circular riff.

Other tracks tackle real-world horror, with 'The Host' about a woman and child escaping domestic violence, and opening track 'Not a Drill' calling for resistance against oppressive regimes.

And album closer 'Crested' is as dark as it gets, 8 minutes of full on doom meets discord, combining the atmospherics of Windhand with the slowed down hardcore of My War-era Black Flag

'Bird' is gloriously heavy, fuzzed up yet melodic, at times bleak and thrilling as it is infectious.

It's a bold statement of intent, and we are stoked to add Ex People to the NHS roster.

The second album by London/Brighton heavy contingent GRAVE LINES follows on from their 2016  debut 'Welcome To Nothing' and sees the band expand their sound across nine weighty, yet darkly melodic tracks.

Coming in at just shy of an hour. FED INTO THE NIHILIST ENGINE is a must listen for fans of all things heavy, however anybody seeking music that delves into the darker and more introspective aspects of the human condition will find much to love within its expansive tracks.

At times quiet and melancholy, at times an oppressive and miserable onslaught of crushing riffs and filth-laden grooves.

Fans of Yob to Neurosis, even Bauhaus or Dead Can Dance, take heed, FITNE reaches out to encompass elements of them all.

Lyrically introspective, dark and challenging, vocalist Jake Harding states - ¦
'The album is an exploration into our relationship with negativity. The Nihilist Engine is symbolic of our greatest flaw and the self-defeating nature of our species. This machine represents both the inner turmoil of the human spirit and our struggle to understand the darkness spreading from external forces. Self-perpetuating and infectious, these feelings contaminate and spread. A relentless machine drawing us in and chewing up our poisoned remains.'

Paean to Wilson is arguably Vini Reilly and the Durutti Columns most important and consistent piece of work since the demise of the original and seminal  Factory Records in the early 1990's. It was commissioned MIF (Manchester International Festival of Music), July 2009. Vini had already composed pieces for Tony to listen to whilst he was ill in hospital and it was from here that the project developed. The opening night of the three sell-out festival shows formed part of the BBC2 'Culture Show' coverage on the event. Dave Simpson ' MIF Review ' The Guardian 20/7/09  4 out of 5 '

Near the beginning of the final night of the Durutti Column's 70-minute international festival tribute to Tony Wilson, A Paean to Wilson, guitarist Vini Reilly announced that he wouldn't be singing: "So you won't have to put up with my awful voice and schoolboy lyrics." If Wilson was with us, he would have chuckled.

The Granada presenter-turned-Factory Records boss spent years urging his first signing to stop singing, and concentrate on the virtuosity that led Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante to call Reilly "the greatest guitarist in the world". Two years after his death, Wilson got his way, one of many lovely touches in a very personal, emotional and often warmly funny musical tribute.

Wilson signed Joy Division and Happy Mondays, yet never gave up on this cult band he adored, working with them even after his legendary label went bankrupt.

After touring the UK with Loop & Australia in December 2013 with the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The KVB's new six track EP is the culmination of a week long recording session at Anton Newcombe's studio in Berlin last autumn .

During which they recruited the help of Joe Dilworth (Stereolab) to contribute live drums to the recordings , this was the first time the band have worked outside of their own studio set up at their home in South London.

'Out Of Body' is a further exploration of the bands interest in phenomenology, bodily immersion and consciousness. Introspective lyrics are suspended in dream like melodies, further expanding upon the duo's hypnotic aesthetic which they explore both sonically and visually on the record.

The KVB is the audio/visual project of London youngsters Nicholas Wood & Kat Day, who combine reverb heavy wall of sound guitars, minimal haunting strings and grinding bass synths, messed up motorik drum machine beats and delay drenched vocals with a backdrop of imagery to accompany the symphony, that's nothing short of life affirming.
The KVB is a group with a sense of urgency about it, to do what they need to do, with full commitment and without delay.

  • The Brian Jonestown Massacre 'Bringing It All Back Home Again' - Cargo Records UK

    'a' Recordings

The Brian Jonestown Massacre 'Bringing It All Back Home Again'

    £6.99

This six-song, half-hour CD/VINYL the band's affecting a more rural, lonesome-sounding tone and a moodier, more deliberate pace; the more traditional feel meshes well with Anton Newcombe's twisting of country-gospel lyrical clichés into rock & roll attitude.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp! Records, the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK Shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

With The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is one of the subjects of the documentary DIG!, winner of the 2004 Grand Jury Prize Documentary at Sundance. DIG! is also a part of the Permanent Collection of the NY Museum of Modern Art. Since the release of DIG!, the band has achieved increasing critical acclaim and recognition, and has performed at Cochella and Lollapalooza in 2005 with special mentions from the NY Times and Washington Post.

Susan Whitby, aka Lora Logic was one of the most distinctive talents from the post-punk era known for her intoxicating, rough-around-the-edges, yet exhilarating sax playing and haywire vocal style. Her offbeat, occasionally arresting lyrics tackled alienation, sexism, poverty and urban isolation, and with a complete disregard for convention, she carved her own path not only in her short-lived music career but also personal life.

She was still in her teens when she answered an ad in Melody Maker “Looking for young punks,” and in 1976, with her friend Marion Elliot (aka Poly Styrene), she formed the punk band X-Ray Spex and acquired the pseudonym, Lora Logic. The duo soon achieved notoriety with the irresistible feminist protest single, ‘Oh Bondage Up Yours’ (1977) – Logic arguably stealing the show with her thrilling punk sax.

“X-Ray Spex was my first band, I happened to be accepted, It happened to work, I happened to get famous overnight. I’d been playing sax in a cupboard in my room; I thought I better do something.” However, just prior to recording 'Germ Free Adolescents' (1978), X-Ray Spex's debut album, she found herself unexpectedly ousted from the band. With abundant enthusiasm and encouragement from Geoff Travis, founding director of Rough Trade Records, she went on to form Essential Logic, creating some of the most liberating and exciting music of the early post-punk era, not only as Essential Logic, but also as a solo artist.

Hiss and Shake Records are pleased to present a limited edition boxset of 50 essential recordings from the irresistibly engaging Lora Logic archive, allowing for a new generation to become aware of her incredible creative output. Across 5 LPs, ‘Logically Yours’ includes in their entirety, the classic Rough Trade Records releases ‘Beat Rhythm News (Waddle Ya Play?) (1979) – Essential Logic’s sole studio album, and Lora’s solo album, ‘Pedigree Charm’ (1982) – her last studio album before turning her back on the music business, sad and disillusioned and fighting drug addiction, which saw her turn to a Hare Krishna lifestyle, alongside Poly Styrene, embracing a fresh new chapter.

This totally absorbing and definitive collection also includes two retrospective compilations; ‘Essential Logic – ‘Aerosol Burns & Other Misdemeanours’, which comprises early single releases, B-sides and oddities including the gloriously chaotic ‘Aerosol Burns’, the essential punk/disco ‘Music Is A Better Noise’, and ‘Fanfare In the Garden’, showcasing Lora at her most pop. In addition, ‘Essential Logic – ‘No More Fiction’; contains 10 vinyl exclusives, including ‘Do You Believe in Christmas?’, recorded with the Krishna Kids Choir in 1985, alongside tracks recorded circa 1997, with Martin Muscatt, Dave Farren (Bad Manners) and Gary Valentine (Blondie), forming the basis of what would have been Essential Logic’s third studio album, ‘No More Fiction’.

Having recently returned to the studio refreshed and rejuvenated, ‘Logically Yours’ also includes ‘The Land of Kali’ (co-produced by Youth), the first new Essential Logic studio album in 43 years, and features the forthcoming new single ‘Prayer for Peace’, a re-imagining of the X-Ray Spex track from the tragically overlooked album, ‘Conscious Consumer’ (1995) on which Lora also played sax. “Poly Styrene and I were living in a Krishna community in Worcestershire in the early 80s. We came together for the first time musically after X-Ray Spex to record the original version of this song. In 2019, I decided to record my own take as a tribute to the special times we shared. I hope Poly likes this new version too.”

The 7” release of ‘Prayer for Peace’ is exclusive to the boxset via The bands DTC site and features a picture of Lora and Poly together during their time living at the temple. Further tracks penned for release from the album include the dystopian, lockdown-inspired ‘Alien Boys’ and ‘Sky Rocket’, written with daughter Malini, about the fairground of life.

Despite her short-lived career in the music business, Lora still managed to perform and appear on releases with many artists including US experimental rock band Red Crayola between 1978 and 1981, and also appeared on recordings by The Stranglers, The Raincoats, Kollaa Kestää, Dennis Bovell, Swell Maps and later, Boy George.

Undoubtedly an iconic figure of the UK post-punk scene, Lora Logic’s boldness, adventurousness and sense of fun can be seen as an influence on numerous female artists today including Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peaches and St. Vincent among others.
