They've been called the missing link between Albert Ayler and Black Sabbath and a Marshall amp version of John Coltrane's Interstellar Space.

With this, their eighth album, they go all the way back to their humble beginnings some twelve years ago and for the first time do what can loosely be dubbed a "proper" jazz album.

Hence the album title which translates  "Jazz, From Memory" in English. The goal, according to guitarist Even Hermansen, is still to explore the link between the Shorter/Coltrane world on one side and electric blues/Hendrix on the other, but without having to turn everything up to eleven.

Sporting four originals and two cover versions - McCoy Tyner's "Contemplation" and Albert Ayler's "Angels" - this is easily their most confident, spiritual, heartfelt and fully realised album so far.

"Gamle Plata Til Arne" originates from the first ever jam session they had before starting the band all those years ago and the album closer "Lola Mit Dem Gorgonzola' is an elegant slice of Scandinavian summer melancholy, in a jazz tradition first explored by legendary Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johanson in the mid 60s.

This young and extremely eminent trio continue to mix the energy of rock with the freedom of jazz in the most exciting and exhilirating ways.

UK magazine Jazzwise called their previous album insanely good and likened them to Jeff Beck being backed by Elvin Jones.

Jitterbug is even better, the trio having matured through a number of live dates. It's possible to find several references in their music, but quite difficult to name other groups that they actually sound like. In our catalogue they are probably closest to Scorch Trio and Elephant9.

Otherwise, if you dig Jimi Hendrix, Red period King Crimson, Earth and heavy electric jazz it's very likely that you will find plenty to dig into here as well. Needless to say, we highly recommend this great album.

The second album from this trio of young (all are 25) musicians shows a distinct development from their slightly patchy but very promising debut Cowboy Music (Jazzaway, 2007).

Founded by Even and Gard in 2003 in their hometown of Skien, a couple of hours from Oslo, the trio aim to combine the jazz/improv background of the rhythm section with the rock/metal background of leader, composer and guitarist Even Helte Hermansen to create their own expressive music inspired by names like Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix as well as Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler. Even grew up with groups and musicians like Kiss, Pantera, Sepultura, Faith No More, Frank Zappa and John Coltrane.

He is also a member of such diverse groups as Shining and Solveig Slettahjell's Slow Motion Orchestra. Rune is from the northern town of Bodø and also plays in Humvee and Eirik Hegdal Quartet, while Gard can be found in Puma, Humvee and Lord Kelvin.

Both have a background from the Jazz Academy in Trondheim, breathing ground for musicians like Arve Henriksen, Ståle Storløkken, Nils Petter Molvær and many more.

Musically You Lost Me At Hello has an untamed energy to it and shows a looser and rougher side than the debut. At the same time the album as a whole seems more focused.

The production is quite heavy with a dark and dirty side to it. In the Rune Grammofon catalogue You Lost Me At Hello is probably most comparable to Scorch Trio, with a more rocking edge to it, and Motorpsycho.

Regarding the origin of the bandname, there's a real this one goes to eleven story attached to it. Even had a nasty and near fatal encounter with an insanely hot South African Chilli sauce of the same name bursting the hot-o-meter and laying waste strong contenders such as Bushman's Fire and Bushman's Hot AZ Hell... A fitting name to a blasting group....

This international improvising ensemble has been going since 1984 with various members, but a couple of years ago leader and legendary Norwegian sax and clarinet player Frode Gjerstad handpicked a new band of musicians that has meant something special for him during his long career.

The title of this monumental 3CD set is relevant on several levels. Between the youngest and oldest musician there are some fifty years, they come from three continents and they cover a wide range of musical ideas with their unique blend of acoustic, electric and electronic instruments.

Frode Gjerstad wanted this to be a celebration of improvised music and we can only agree that he has succeeded on all levels. The music ranges from the volcanic to the quietly floating where it's equally important for the musicians to know when not to play. In many ways this can be be seen as a great and relevant introduction to the many shades of free jazz and improvised music. The recordings were made at recent jazz festivals in Molde, Moers and Zürich.

Playing on all three discs are Frode Gjerstad (sax and clarinet), Louis Moholo-Moholo (drums), Morten J. Olsen (electronics and drums), Anders Hana (electric guitar), Nick Stephens (acoustic bass), Børre Mølstad (tuba), Sabir Mateen (sax and clarinet), Kevin Norton (vibraphone), Bobby Bradford (cornet) and Lasse Marhaug (electronics).

First pressing of 500, includes CD.Titles inspired by Gunnar Ekelof (1907 - 1968)

May come as a surprise, but in the history of jazz and improvisation the saxophone duet is remarkably rare. Sax players tend to lock horns with drummers, bassists, trumpeters, even cellists and violinists, but rarely with each other. Perhaps it's the force of personality that the sax is associated with: this studio ain't big enough for the both of us.

But here to blow that convention out of the water come two of the planet's most uncompromising and inventive young hornithologists, Colin Stetson and Mats Gustafsson. Mats Gustafsson, a Swede born in 1964, has perfected the art of the vein-popping, no-compromise blowout, and has appeared with Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke, Boredoms' Yoshimi P-We, improvising legends Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee, Peter Brötzmann and Ken Vandermark.

His own free jazz power trio The Thing recently released the acclaimed Cherry Thing album with Neneh Cherry; while his Fire! trio with Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin have released three CDs already on Rune Grammofon. He has also worked extensively in other media, including dance, painting, theatre and poetry.

Colin Stetson is a member of Arcade Fire's touring group, and his prodigious bass saxophone tones have been called on by a host of American alternative acts including Bon Iver, Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, TV On The Radio, David Byrne, Feist, My Brightest Diamond, LCD Soundsystem and many more. He was born in Michigan and is currently based in Montreal, Canada, where he recorded his latest solo album, New History Warfare Vol 2: Judges for local label Constellation.

The four tracks on Stones were recorded live on stage at the 2011 Vancouver Jazz Festival. Miraculously, this explosive encounter was also their first meeting. 'It was completely magic, remembers Mats. 'All was there, the communication, the interaction, the music, the mystery...' The titles were partly inspired by the Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf (1907'1968), of whom Mats says, 'He is the foundation of Swedish modern poetry.

There is so much music in the way he constructs his work. It is extremely inspiring, on all levels. Ekelöf is the man.' From the long throaty drones that open 'Stones That Rest Heavily' to the slithering and flutter-tonguing interplay of 'Stones That Need Not', it's clear that this duo is intent on alchemising their brass tubes into liquid gold. But they mainly use low-end instruments like the bass and baritone sax, which emit deep, warm vibrations. And unlike the more in your face free improvisation, there's an underlying tunefulness that draws you in and envelops you. 'Colin is playing songs,' says Mats, 'and I love that... real songs with great structures and directions! The song quality is still there... but he freakin' rocks in the way he interacts and improvises.'

This is fire music that smoulders in the dark. Perhaps this will give the sax duo a new lease of life. After all, as Mats says, there's 'No escape... nothing to hide... you just need to go out there and interact!'

If anybody deserves to be called a living legend in Norwegian free jazz it must surely be saxophone, flute and clarinet player Frode Gjerstad. Born in 1948 in Stavanger, he has since the early 80s been central on more than fifty records and played with a number of free jazz players such as Evan Parker, Johnny Dyani, John Stevens, Derek Bailey, Barry Guy, Bobby Bradford, Paul Rutherford, Hamid Drake, William Parker, Peter Brötzmann, John Edwards, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Han Bennink and several others.

Detail is the group he founded in 1981 with close friend Eivin One Pedersen (1956-2012) and legendary free jazz drummer and Spontaneous Music Ensemble founder John Stevens (1940-1994).

"First Detail" is a recording from 1982 that predates the first Detail albums, hence the title. By this time Pedersen had left the group. For personal and emotional reasons Frode was sitting on the tapes until last summer before he felt ready to listen to them. Good thing he deemed them suitable for release because this is a truly great album, in our ears one of the best free jazz albums ever to come out of Norway!

It's almost unbelievable that Eivin One Pedersen had just turned 26 at the time, what an incredible player at such a young age! And John Stevens is on top form, with a very open approach in his playing and clearly enjoying the company of the Norwegians.

And Frode Gjerstad, well he is as always himself. At a time when most Norwegian sax players wanted to sound like Jan Garbarek, Gjerstad followed his own nose. In that respect there are no obvious references to other sax players. In our ears he is one of the giants still active on the international scene. Needless to say, this comes highly recommended!

  • El Doom And The Born Electric 'Soundtrack' - Cargo Records UK

El Doom And The Born Electric 'Soundtrack'

    £4.99

Debut album from young veterans of the Norwegian heavy and progressive scenes, fronted by singer, guitarist, writer and producer Ole Petter Andreassen. This is classic, heavy, guitardriven and melodic progressive rock, the playing and production being top notch with a natural mix of solid riffs, intricate instrumental passages and great hooks.

The core of the band, apart from Andreassen, is Hedvig Mollestad on guitar and Hammond organ and brothers Brynjar and Haavard Takle Ohr from El Cuero on lead guitar and drums respectively. Guests include Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen from Elephant9 on bass, Ståle Storløkken from Elephant9 and Supersilent on Hammond, Mikael Lindquist on Hammond and Mellotron and veteran Jon Eberson on guitar.

Jazz guitarist Eberson, now 60 and more vital than ever, arrived at the studio, insisted on not hearing any music, plugged in, burned his way through It's Electric and The Hook and was home in time for an early dinner. Eilertsen and Storløkken is widely reckognised to be two of Norway's top instrumentalists in any category and Håvard Takle Ohr is probably the best rock drummer in the country at the moment, to watch him live is a revelation.

All the material is written by Andreassen, with some help on four of the tracks. He has been involved in around 20 albums and most notably been a member of Thulsa Doom and The Cumshots but this is the first album where he is in total control. He is also owner of Caliban Studio, home to many great sounding Norwegian albums. He has been nominated for four Norwegian Grammys and won two.

After a solid run of five studio albums and 2019's two double live albums, Psychedelic Backfire I and II, Elephant9 had taken their groovy mix of high energy rock and power jazz as far as they could.

In this respect Arrival Of The New Elders comes as a welcome and most timely addition to their recorded output. More varied, mature and reflective, they are as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented, with the longest tracks clocking in around the seven minute mark.

Having built a solid live reputation even before their brilliant 2008 debut Dodovoodoo, the trio boasts what is probably the strongest rhythm section in Norway, complemented with keyboard magician extraordinaire, the one and only Ståle Storløkken. And boy, does he excel himself on this album, notably with more focus on the Rhodes than before. That said, this is nothing if not another strong group effort from what has been a very tight unit straight from the outset.

Seven brand new compositions from Storløkken and one from Hængsle make way for what we consider to be their finest and most cohesive album to date.

Arrival Of The New Elders was recorded by trusted stalwart Christian Engfelt, with early Dungen producer Mattias Glavå handling the mixing duties.

Excellent new trio consisting of Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Humcrush) on keyboards, Nikolai Eilertsen (The National Bank, Lester) on bass and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums.

Storløkken mostly concentrating on organ and electric piano gives the album a late sixtees, early seventees flavour with traces of rock, jazz, prog and psychedelia. The rock solid rhythm section gives it all a contemporary edge and we get an extremely tight little unit with a high degree of great musicianship as well as pure joy in their playing.

Elephant9 blends the virtuosic precision of King Crimson and Yes with the jazz-fusion explorations of electric Miles, Weather Report and the Tony Williams Lifetime. Key and time signatures change constantly as the quartet helters and skelters between tightly composed sections, driving kosmische interludes and bucolic Canterbury excursions. Rolling Stone (US)

This sums it up pretty well when it comes to reference points, but it's also necessary to add that Elephant9 have developed quite a personal and identifiable style - through previous albums, touring and close collaborations with Reine Fiske and Terje Rypdal.

On this, their fifth studio album, they are back to the core trio of their two first albums, with Ståle Storløkken (keyboards), Nikolai Hængsle (bass) and Torstein Lofthus (drums).

On their fourth album, counting the limited vinyl only '?Live At The BBC'?, Elephant9 join forces with Reine Fiske, the quite excellent Swedish guitarist from Dungen, The Amazing and Träd, Gräs och Stenar, for yet another heavy slice of mindblowing modern rock'n'jazz psychedelia.

Writers have called upon names like Tony Williams' Lifetime, Deep Purple, Brian Auger, Emerson Lake & Palmer and early seventees Miles Davis to describe the music, pointing to the fact that Elephant9 are comfortable in both rock and jazz. Reine Fiske makes his entrance on the title track, the long intro section almost sounding like it could have come off an early Terje Rypdal album.

No coincident considering Fiske is a big Rypdal fan and Storløkken being Rypdal's keyboard player for well over a decade. His guest spot ends with the final thirteen minute tour de force and its heavy funk intro reminiscent of another guitar great and his Band of Gypsys.

It's not often a "jazz" band take the big step from the club scene to a 1300 capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band, often being named as Norway's best live band - surely quite rare for an instrumental band - they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles.

On this, their fourth studio album, Elephant9 once again join forces with Reine Fiske - the quite excellent Swedish guitarist from Dungen and The Amazing - for an epic slice of mindblowing modern rock'n'jazz prog psychedelia.

"Silver Mountain" is their finest album so far, where all the parts fall into place. The core trio is still Ståle Storløkken, Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen and Torstein Lofthus, three of Norway's finest musicians.

Guest Reine Fiske brings another dimension to the band and is now so integrated that he might as well be considered a permanent member. "Silver Mountain" is an epic double album containing five tracks between 10 and 22 minutes, four tracks being originals in addition to the most spaced out version of "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" you're likely to encounter.

After the highly successful "Perfectly Unhappy" album with Andy Sheppard, the trio is back with a new album featuring seven brand new songs from the pianist.

Captivating and lyrical, always melodic, often melancholic and uplifting at the same time, these are all real tunes. After 10 years, four albums and regular touring on four continents, the trio is tighter than ever and have reached an almost telepathic level of interplay.

"End Of Summer" was recorded in Oslo in April during lockdown. After getting all their concerts cancelled because of the pandemic, Espen says it was very inspiring to still be able to meet in a recording studio to make new music and keep it all alive.

This being their first recording in five years as a trio, Espen is also keen to stress that the collaboration with Andy was not a one-off and that the plan is to "continue working together for a very long time".

The jazz world is not short on piano trios, but it's not every day that one comes across a new trio with a personal musical language.

This debut release from the Norwegian trio contains highly melodical and lyrical instrumentals with elements from Scandinavian folk and melancholia and shades of the deep woods.

It's definitely jazz, but their less is more approach is in contrast to most of their contemporaries, with structures almost like pop songs and with a strong focus on melodies and short solos. It's fair to place them in a tradition with Tord Gustavsen Trio and the late Esbjörn Svensson Trio, but without really sounding like any of them. A most welcome addition to our catalogue.

Espen Eriksen Trio with Andy Sheppard 'Perfectly Unhappy'

    £12.49

Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and released their first album in 2010.
Since then they have released two more records on Rune Grammofon, and toured in 16 countries across four continents. The music relies on highly melodic tunes and a 'less is more' approach often credited for its unique voice within today's jazz scene by the international press.

To quote BBC in their review of the trio's second album:

'A wonderfully plaintive jazz record, abandoned to the lost art of melodic minimalism, stripped back and beautifully near bare. No smoke and mirrors, just the graceful chemistry of superb musicians at the top of their game'.

The aptly named "Perfectly Unhappy" features eight new songs by the pianist, all written with this collaboration in mind. These are enchanting and lyrical tunes, often melancholic and uplifting at the same time and will surely speak to followers of both the trio and Sheppard and attract many new ones.

With a career spanning over four decades, working together with the likes of George Russell, Gil Evans and Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard is truly one of Europe's leading saxophonists. He is currently an ECM recording artist with his own quartet.

"I knew from the first time I heard the trio play that I would fit right in. I loved the melodic sense and vibe and was thrilled when I was invited to guest with the trio in London in 2016. Espen wrote a set of fantastic tunes for the recording session in Oslo. They played themselves and we had a ball recording, everything clicked and in two days we had made a very special album". On a sultry July evening on an intimate stage at Kongsberg Jazz Festival, Norway, two elder statesmen of improvised music - one wearing a grey shirt, the other sporting a T-shirt with the legend Thunder Pussy' -  stepped up to the platform.

What followed resembled an in depth conversation between two old friends and sparring partners - one that ranged from the amicable to the argumentative, from hush to harmony.

'What/If/They Both Could Fly' is only the second time this titanic pair have appeared as a duo on record. Their paths have crossed sporadically over the years: Evan has guested in Joe's  Survival Unit III group, and they have frequently made up a trio with saxophonist Daunik Lazro. But their only release together has been 'Chicago Tenor Duets', back in 2000, praised in Jazz Times for its mixture of lyricism and complexity.

Evan Parker was 68 when this concert was recorded and by now music just seems to beat within him, sure as his own heartbeat. McPhee, at 73, is the elder here, but his zaps of energy on the tiny pocket trumpet, and his thoughtful, exploratory lines and throbbing soprano sax overtones are played as vigorously as a man half his age. Listen to the amazing zigzags of interlocking sound about six minutes into opening track What'.

Hear the microtonal mayhem swarming at the start of They Both Could Fly'. The duo never seek to dazzle with virtuosity, but their total mastery of their instruments allows them to dance around each other and match each other's moves point for point and blow for blow. Play this and you'll believe two men can fly.

Fire With Oren Ambarchi 'In The Mouth A Hand'

    £16.99

Mats Gustafsson: Tenor sax, live electronics, Fender Rhodes, organ Johan Berthling: Electric bass Andreas Werliin: Drums Jim O'Rourke: Guitar.

We are yet again proud to present a new album, their third, from this excellent Swedish trio, something of a supergroup with members from already well known projects. And again it's a  collaboration, this time with the extraordinary and prolific guitarist Oren Ambarchi.

With their heavy, hypnotic, psychedelic rock'n'jazz explorations they have carved out a different sound than any of the groups they are normally associated with. Sax player, improviser, composer and fervent record collector Mats Gustafsson is possibly most know from powerjazztrio The Thing, he has also played more than 1500 concerts and participated on around 150 records with musicians like Peter Brötzmann, Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee and a host of others simply too many to mention here.

Johan Berthling has worked freelance with jazz, improvised music, pop, folk and more. He is a founder member of the great trio Tape and founded Häpna, one of our favourite record labels. Among his current other groups are Animes with David Stackenäs and Raymond Strid and Sten Sandell Trio with pianist Sten Sandell and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Johan is also working as a record producer. Andreas Werliin, drummer extraordinaire in Wildbirds & Peacedrums, is Fire!'s youngest member and one of the most interesting and acclaimed new percussionists in the creative music scene of Scandinavia.

He has developed an exceptionally personal way of playing and is known for his strength and creativity. With Wildbirds & Peacedrums he has released two acclaimed albums of modern bluesy folk music and toured extensively in Europe. Oren Ambarchi is a true explorer of the guitar, re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it's no longer easily identifiable as itself as The Wire once wrote. Born in Sydney, Australia, Oren started out as a drummer playing free jazz before starting to experiment with a guitar laying about in the rehearsal room, one thing leading to another.

He has a number of albums to his name on labels like Tzadik, Touch, Häpna, Southern Lord and Black Truffle and has collaborated with Fennesz, Keiji Haino, John Zorn, Jim O'Rourke, Keith Rowe, Evan Parker, Merzbow and Sunn 0))) to mention just a few.
