Legendary indie space rockers Sterling Roswell and Pete Bassman of Spacemen 3 return as The Darkside after a 23 year hiatus with a 5CD 'Complete Studio Masters' box set of remasters, remixes and demos. One of the projects to emerge from the groundbreaking efforts of the drone-rock pioneers, The Darkside led by Pete Bain (a.k.a. Pete Bassman), who on leaving Spacemen 3 prior returned to his hometown of Rugby, would be joined by fellow alumni and multi instrumentalist Sterling Roswell.
Signed soon after to Beggars Banquet due to the strength of their demo’s and live shows, The Darkside went on to unleash psychedelic gems including; “Waiting For The Angels”, “Guitar Voodoo”, “Mystic Morning”, “All That Noise” and many more. Now, nearly 25 years on, Rosco and Pete have worked front line for both the re-mastering and artwork of this special release.
Rosco aka Sterling Roswell explains: “Contained are just some of the seeds that Pete and I planted in the spring time of our youth that are now bearing fruit with the help everyone at Beggars Banquet and Cargo Records, thanks and praises...
This 5 CD box set contains the complete studio masters, 55 tracks recorded between the years 1989 and 1993 and contains 4 hidden bonus unreleased tracks recorded Live on Campus Radio at Surrey University celebrating the work we did together and continue to do so...”. Jonathan Levitt of Blurt Magazine, discusses the bands first release “All That Noise”: “I can clearly remember back to 1990 when All That Noise was released and the first time I spun it on my Doctor Goth radio show.
While simultaneously listening to the sinister opening bass notes of “Guitar Voodoo” and staring at the cryptic album cover I was transfixed by a band that was thankfully outside of any contrived musical movement being pushed at the time, Madchester anyone? The album is propelled along a very clear trajectory giving a heavy nod to 60’s psych along the way. Now some 27 years on, the album remains as it did upon my first listen, a psychedelic gem existing in its own space and time, filled with a sinister, brooding and beguiling set of tracks that continue to astonish.”

Standing beside the Niger River esplanade in downtown, Bamako Leila Gobi waves to people in the passing cars. She smiles and laughs with them. Walking down the street she is greeted warmly by strangers.
From the distant provincial city Menaka, she has become a successful artist here in the capitol of Mali. ‘2017’ is Leila Gobi's second album on Clermont Music. It was recorded in Hampathe Bah Studio, on the second floor of a group of buildings off the main road in a suburb of western Bamako. The sessions were intimate. The tracks were laid without effects, clean. Leila wanted to produce an album that brought a new dimension to her music.
The problem was how to create this new sound with only the basic tools available in Mali. It is almost impossible for musicians there to find the equipment available to the average westerner. The talent is there, just not the hardware. And electric power failures and poor communications infrastructure interrupt regularly.
The final sounds were found in the studio while mixing in the synthesizers and electronic effects. Tracks were mixed and mastered in Bamako, New York, and Los Angeles. Remaining faithful to the underlying roots of the music, ‘2017’ bridges genres.
The album forges the origins of trance, beats, and loops with new technology, a fusion of many influences. And across it all, Leila Gobi's unmistakable voice shines through.
Bye has been best known as one of Sweden’s most sought-after film composers, working on scores not only for contemporary but also vintage silent movies. In 2014 he received two of the three nominations for Best Original Music Award at Sweden’s Guldbaggen. He’s recorded a number of solo works, too, not least 2010’s Drömt and 2013’s Bethanien. This Forgotten Land , produced by Joel Danell offers a deeply atmospheric experience, steeped in nostalgia and yet thrillingly contemporary.
Opener “Melt” indicates what’s to come, with its muffled tones and subdued sense of foreboding. At other times – such on “Underneath The Silence” – one can hear the influence of Debussy. On “Absence”, the creaking of Bye’s keyboard pedals is intrinsic to the atmosphere of his rippling melody, while “Into The Haze” and “Cascading Sun” and “Empty Streets / Piano Street” reveal his affection for circus music and other archaic styles. Incongruous sounds audible in the background are essential to his compositions.
When he was 20, Stockholm’s celebrated Cinematheque contacted Bye about playing music for silent films. “Silent film music was like a blank spot on the music map, but I recognised the freedom I’d have as a musician, and the force of the poetry in these forgotten images.” As his reputation spread, Bye recognised that he’d stumbled on a singularly romantic style. “I started out as a piano improviser,” he says, “and suddenly I realised that I’m a composer.”
This Forgotten Land looks set to expand Bye’s reach. Peculiarly otherworldly, serenely haunting, and utterly unforgettable, its melodies linger long after its conclusion, their atmosphere a magical mist. Out of time, but just in time, it confirms Matti Bye as a vital composer of visionary, cinematic scope.
Quotes: “Spooked slow motion circus mannerisms conjure a mad whirligig at the end of time. Ambient traces of Debussy and Satie inform his piano.” Uncut
“Haunting beautiful and ethereal, this is a wonderful album from a truly distinctive and singular visionary.” Future Music
“His album is a treat. Echoing piano is at its core but there’s a spooked vibe, throughout. Not horror filmic, more like you’d wandered into the past by accident, or come across a derelict building that once used to be alive with voices and laughter. Bye musters his own uncanny musical world, a forgotten land, indeed.” The Arts Desk
“His studio is an analogue world of synths, pianos, celesta, Mellotron and organs, and his music alludes to the strange, romantic mood you get when you hear old merry go rounds, or mechanical instruments in small amusements parks, and abandoned places.” The Wire
“Channels everything from eerie midways to the manic Swordfishtrombones era of Tom Waits.” Self-Titled
“Hushed atmospherics are underpinned by superbly fluid musicality. A work in perpetual evolution, it welcomes you in via meditative, inward citations.” Clash
"Full of haunting piano dynamics, electronic edges and lots of space.” Hi Fi World

Soundtrack by Swedish composer Matti Bye to the acclaimed Swedish documentary film of the 1970’s Formula One driver Ronnie Peterson. Peterson nicknamed “Superswede” was the fastest formula 1-driver in the 70s who never became a world champion.
In the emotional film Ronnie's life is traced back to where it all started. From the small town of Almby, where he met his beloved Barbro, to the seductive jet-set and glamour of the racing circuits in the Formula 1-circus.
They were like fish out of water trying to fit in, in a world of money and fame. Ronnie, just a down to earth working class hero with the looks of a movie star and gifted with a talent for speed. Suddenly he was mingling with the rich and the famous, and the stunning Barbro who always was by his side through all the hardships, when Ronnie challenged the unwritten rules of the game, binding him to unfair contracts and commercial issues.
Ronnie's incredible talent eventually takes him to the top, being the fastest driver of them all, but when he stands on the threshold of becoming a true contender for the world championship, fate intervenes one tragic September Sunday at Monza, 1978. A day when Sweden came to a standstill and the entire world held its breath.
Starring Nina Kennedy, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Sir Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter and John Watson among others.
