New Zealand's Surf City released the jaw-dropping kiwi guitar buzz masterpiece Kudos through Fire Records back in 2010. The band joined the long line of Fire masters from Spacemen 3 to Teenage Fanclub and still remain the perfect pack of young chord slashers to take their place on our wall of guitar mavens.

Updating the psych haze of the Spacemen with the circular drone of Animal Collective and the off kilter melodies of The Clean with the drive of Interpol, Surf City is the perfect mix of everything you loved about the early 80's New Zealand jangle and the 60's blur of Velvets and Zombies with the shapeshifting songwriting of today.

Formed by Davin Stoddard and Josh Kennedy, they quickly stared banging out catchy nuggets with the aid of Josh's brother Jamie on bass and Logan Collins pounding the drums, and the foursome were off and running. Eventually settling on the Jesus and Mary Chain inspired name, they arrived with their Steve Keene (hunted down for his previous work for Pavement and Silver Jews) adorned self-titled debut EP.

The group played some manic shows at both home and showcase gigs abroad, Stereogum praised their impressively assured sound and perfect 2-minute pop storm. All Music was taken with the sheer energy and ragged happy sound and gushed the whole is just a delight Pitchfork noted that their punky psychedelic pop is impressive and admitted Surf City's pleasure for pleasure's sake approach already has me pining for more.

New Zealand psychgazers Surf City return with an album of sticky summer jams and fuzzy swirls and out and out dream pop blasts. Harnessing the explorations of 2013's We Knew It Was Not Going To Be Like This into more focused packages, the group still delivers reverb-soaked joy at every turn. Adding in a return to their earlier efforts in crafting the perfect jittery motorik pop song, Jekyll Island finds the band at the height of their powers.

Centered around singer/guitarist Davin Stoddard's wry observations and sing song delivery, the record sees Jamie Kennedy increasingly pick up a guitar as well and add a welcome dimension of sunken melodies and lock step fuzz at all of the right moments. Mike Ellis and Andy Frost hold things together with a constant driving beat and rhythm that proves undeniable.

Following a wander around the globe landing Stoddard in the U.S., Mexico, India and South Korea, the band finally find themselves reunited back home and ready to blast out their unique blend of Flying Nunesque hooky pop smarts, Yo La Tengo loopy psych travels, Neu! krautrock, and a never-ending infectious layer of sun-drenched fuzz.

Jekyll Island is Surf City's third album for Fire Records and will be released March 23/24. Following successful runs through the U.S. and Australia, 2015 will see Surf City's first ever European tour.

New Zealand band Surf City's latest album We Knew It Was Not Going To Be Like This continues their love affair with psychedelic, reverb-swathed guitar pop, drawing from their Flying Nun forefathers The Clean and The Chills, as well as the fuzzed-up dream pop of The Jesus and Mary Chain and the loopy noise of Animal Collective. This time round the songwriting is stronger, the tunes are hookier and the sound is even more lush.
