It is the very essence of what they are calling “dronegaze”, pushing the boundaries of the ambient genre while embracing a profound auditory expression. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAccording to the trio, the six, long tracks on Reveries are “heavily reliant on improvisation, intuition, and allowing the compositions to exist in their own moment; the aim was a feeling of fluidity and a sense that every instrument has its place and purpose”. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd they’re right. The opening title track emerges quietly in a swirl of strings; lead single ‘Deus’ eases its fittingly reverent grain into a glorious minor-key immensity; ‘Cadere’ pulls together a cast of orchestral instruments into a comforting devotional; ‘Somnium’ plays out in diffuse, shimmering melodic rounds; ‘Vale’ blossoms from a pair of sparse, alternating chord swells; and ‘Aufero’ is the perfect coda that reprises the low-end rumble of the album’s overture before being swept away on a sea of dissonance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“We live in an era of infinite distraction,” says \u003cstrong\u003eZach Frizzell\u003c\/strong\u003e, “where often the most valuable thing you can find is a respite for the soul.” How right he is. Left with songs and bits of music originally intended for the band, she began working with cellist and string arranger \u003cstrong\u003eAudrey Riley\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eRobin Guthrie\u003c\/strong\u003e, formerly of the \u003cstrong\u003eCocteau Twins\u003c\/strong\u003e, both of whom encouraged her to sing her own songs. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCovid put a temporary halt on proceedings, but the decision had been made. When Sonic Cathedral introduced her to James Chapman at the start of 2022, Pearlies quickly took shape and blossomed into a masterpiece, the perfect mix of Emma’s incredible, idiosyncratic songwriting and James’ electronic production nous. By her own admission, Emma tends to write words and “see what comes out”, but Pearlies seems to tell the story of her decision to go it alone, with opener ‘I Was Miles Away’ posing the question: “See if I make it on my own”. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe rest of the album provides the answer as it takes in everything from the unexpectedly funky first single ‘Bend The Round’, to folky finger-picking and film theme references, via psych leaning electronic pop reminiscent of \u003cstrong\u003eGoldfrapp\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003eMelody\u003c\/strong\u003e’s Echo Chamber. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt concludes with ‘Clusters’, a stunning, Stereolab-style groove which begins with the line “and now the party’s over, the music’s at the end”. This is most notable on the closing track, ‘Motor Boats’, where he overlays words from Julie Sheldon’s polemic poem The Same Boat (“We’re all in the same boat they say, but I would disagree”). According to Steve, these simple words of rejection “capture the reality of our times perfectly”. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, it was the collaborations with the two guest vocalists that tied the whole thing together and paved the way to the finished album. “After a few false starts, I had started to doubt the project altogether. It was going nowhere,” says Steve. “Then, out of the darkness, Emma got in touch to tell me that she’d found her voice and could I send her some tracks. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA few files back and forth and an afternoon in the studio later and we had ‘Lonely Town’ and ‘Swiss Air’.”In the meantime, Verity from Electrelane had added vocals to the song ‘Messengers’ and transformed the track. The renowned future fusionist adds not only magical co-production, but other sonic additions\/dances\/noises\/mysticism. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“The collaboration really felt limitless,” she enthuses. “I could easily relate to it because Jasamine and I liked a lot of the same music, and I was able to be creative in ways that were freeing as if I was making my own album.”Both spent days driving on empty rural highways listening to the mixes, and it reflects in the final product. With an open ear, many “influence eggs” can be detected by the listener. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e‘Garbage Dream House’ is Zooropian without any of U2’s ego baggage. Epic closing track ‘Jelly Meadow Bright’ even manages to meld the out of control saxophone from The Stooges’ Fun House with the chill buoyancy of a high-end spa. Touching on respected, familiar genres and sounds while attempting to advance one’s own isn’t easy but Bugland manages to. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat genre is it anyway? Is it even shoegaze when it could live happily on a shelf next to Boards of Canada and Autechre? The right answer is ‘yes’.
