    Traxman 'Tekvision Vol.2' Vinyl LP

    £12.49

Tekvision Volume 1 was a stone cold classic, with Rolling Stone charting it at #3 in their top 20 EDM records of 2017. Two years on, Cornelius Traxman'Ferguson returns with the second instalment, featuring 7 exceptional new Footwork productions.

Traxman is a bonafide OG, with a discography dating back to the halcyon era of Ghetto House in the late 80's and early 90's. 30 years on, Traxman is a revered figure in Chicago's urban music scene, having presided over the evolution from Ghetto House to Juke and from Juke to Footwork culture. Originally released in 1989, Work Dat Mutha Fucker by Steven Poindexter is considered to be one of the most influential tracks from the early days of Ghetto House.

Traxman remixes it brilliantly on this release, reworking the stripped back, minimalist drum beat of the original into an upfront Footwork pattern. This sense of continuity is equally evident on Let Me See You Naked feat. DJ Juicy, and Traxman's remix of To Da Hoooz by DJ Deeon.

These productions successfully capture the sexual energy and exuberance of Ghetto House, turbo charged at 160 BPM. Elsewhere on the record, Traxman explores different moods whilst always keeping the dance floor firmly in mind. The opening track It's Lasting Bass lays an infectious vocal harmony over complex drum patterns and a fearsome bassline.

Osaka opens with mellow, sultry keys before introducing a wobbling synth and diced up Orchestal samples. 4 Da Lyfe is a soulful and slightly more meditative track, with a vocal loop expressing solidarity and self-affirmation. Wildcard feat. Jana Rush, stands alone as the only track without a vocal element, instead utilising a piercing and insistent synth to create a powerful sonic intensity.

Overall this is triumphant record, and a worthy successor to the original Tekvision release, proving once again that Traxman is an unrivalled exponent of MPC-driven footwork energy.

A leading figure and respected elder in the Teklife family, Traxman has waited patiently while releases from young upstarts like Taso and Dj Earl have been enjoyed by footwork lovers all over the world.

Now the time has come for Traxman to take centre stage, presenting a collection of new material that demonstrates his mastery of the footwork sound. Tekvision arrives hot on the heels of Teklife 005: Greenlight by DJ Manny, bringing an interesting contrast of production methods and styles.

A prodigious crate digger, Traxman has provided the sample sources for many of Footwork's classic tracks over the years. So while DJ Manny recorded the majority of the vocals on Greenlight himself, Traxman uses his expert sample flipping techniques to add the human element to his productions.

Traxman is a mainstay of the Chicago underground, with a discography stretching back to the golden era of Dance Mania Records in the 1990s. Ghetto House was an important precursor to Footwork, and Traxman was a key figure during this transition. Echoes of the Ghetto House sound resonate through Tekvision, with tracks like Drop It Down and Twist The Party Out paying homage to the origins of Juke and Footwork music.

Be Gagen feat DJ Earl is a beautiful opening track, with a soulful, melancholic synth unfolding patiently over a half-speed beat. When the bass kicks in after 1 minute 10 seconds it has a profoundly uplifting effect, and the late arriving vocal rounds off the composition perfectly.

Many of the tracks demonstrate brilliant and playful manipulation of vocal snippets, with Let Me Get Up and Control Ya Bitchezzz among the finest examples of this art. Finally,Tone Deaf and Whop Line show yet another side to Traxman's sound with an intoxicating and angular mix of bass and bleeps.

    Tracklisting:
    Side A:
    1. Be Gagen (Feat DJ Earl)
    2. Drop It Down
    3. Control Ya Bitchezzz

Cornelius Ferguson a.k.a. Traxman is from the west side of Chicago and one of the longest serving producers working in footwork with releases stretching back to the glory days of ghetto house on Dance Mania records in the nineties. He's also one of the co-founders of Chicago's two-decades-old Geto DJz clique and a member of DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn's Ghetto Teknitianz and was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes which were the prototype for footwork's evolution. His unique brand of footwork is very strongly rooted in Chicago's history of soul, funk, house and ghetto trax; he's a veteran and renowned crate digger who has provided the sample sources for many of footwork's classic tracks over the years. His deep knowledge of music (check the mixes he occasionally throws up on the net) makes him one of the city's most versatile and skilled DJs and producers.

Traxman's own productions are an incredibly well rounded suture between hip hop's natural funk and resourceful sample flipping, the hyper-kinetic innovation of footwork's stop-start, half-time to double-speed drum programming and a deep respect and understanding of Chicago's house music past, that few producers can match; 'Da Mind Of Traxman' is a testament to this man's skills.

'Footworking On Air' starts the album in a relaxed and almost improvised mood with Kalimba melody, 303 acid line and martial drums. Then 'Itz Crack' puts strangely edited samples against echoey vocals and off kilter kicks to give the track a really unusual slip and slide feeling. Later, 'Let There Be Rockkkkk' takes an unusual sample source to build a track with a totally raucous rock vibe, whilst 'Rock You' simultaneously references house music's roots and a beautiful soul sample. '1988' is a tough 303 acid track with footwork drum patterns; 'Sound Filed' again tampers with house music's early rhythm tracks, bringing them up to date and speed with footwork's syncopations; while 'Work Me 2011' manages to fuse the soulfulness of deep house with the breathtaking energy of ghetto house and rave. Meanwhile, 'Lady Dro' makes good with some Mizell Brothers samples and loose congas, wrapping and looping them into a hypnotic vortex, while 'Setbacks' works a vocal and piano sample into tinkling abstraction. Traxman's skills are unmessable, you can tell from the minute the album starts that music is like breathing for him, and that the album also makes an incredible and skillful case for 'footwork' as Chicago's very own sideways evolution through hip hop via house with a rich history of soul.

The last few years have seen Chicago Footwork rise to international success, and Traxman's debut album - 'The Mind of Traxman' on Planet Mu - played no small part in that. It showcased Cornelius Ferguson's brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of Footwork's house-derived beat science.

The selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on Traxman's abilities. Instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of Footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. Often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

A number of the tracks here show off the high-speed micro-edited possibilities of Footwork, that end up bringing the sound closer to a faster, hands-on, mpc-punched version of micro-house, bringing out a jagged, fitful character that keeps you on your toes. Tracks like 'Time Slip' echo SND, but cut with hip hop breaks and flying snares, while 'Blow Your Whistle (Tha Out Of Here Remixx)' chops up a short vocal and whistle noise to ridiculously energetic effect. Other tracks pull on a techno edge, 'Computer Getto's galloping game of hide and seek with Kraftwerk, 'Bubbles'  electronic arcade game blips, or 'Under Cover Jack's 303 groove, remind one of the house origins of this music, while 'Can Nutin Hold Me Back' has a leg in soul's history, with its detached accapella chopped into twitchy choruses. Later on '15146' cuts up barked numbers over sprightly woodwind while 'Gone and Hit that Shit' reduces words to rhythmic shapes, darting around meaning. 'The Edge of Panic' is an unexpected and incredibly aggressive detour into Footwork x Speed Metal that could be a micro-genre of its own. We catch our breath with 'I Wanna Be High' before the album ends with the gentle bass and chopped jazz drums of 'U Got Me Running (Remixx)'. The mind of Traxman dazzles again.

Traxman, a.k.a. Corky Strong, real name Cornelius Ferguson, is a Chicago Footwork veteran whose discography also includes many classic Ghetto House and Juke releases going as far back as the mid '90s with music on labels like the legendary Dance Mania. He's worked as a DJ for over three decades and was a member of the Geto DJz and Ghetto Teknitianz crews alongside two other Footwork scene leaders, DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn. He describes his style as "funky, soulful and a bit eccentric."
