'The Spiral' is Frederikke Hoffmeiers third solo LP for Posh Isolation under her Puce Mary moniker, and follows where last year's critically acclaimed 'Persona' left off.

Working more precisely than ever, 'The Spiral' binds the listener in a tight web of sharp synthesizers, hammering percussion, obscured vocals, field recordings, and blistering noise.

Puce Mary manages to at once honour the history of industrial music and noise, as well as transform it. 'The Spiral' is harsh, but the aggression of the compositions never feels unnecessarily overstated. It is an album that is easy to get dragged into but brutally hard to get out of, disclosing the underhand of control as censurable nurture.

'The Spiral' goes through an extreme spectre of emotions, trying to be everything, feel everything, at once. The vestige of safety in dominance and submission is antagonised as audience and artist take turns being dealt blows.

'The Spiral' charts this instability as a perennial tonic in sound. With an already impressive discography and live career, Frederikke Hoffmeier has manifested herself as a key voice in new industrial music.

'The Spiral' is further proof that she has earned her praise.

The story of the passenger liner MS Scandinavian Star stays adrift. Tragic and complex, the details are out there in the electronic ozone, still yet to find closure.
From sea port to Ethernet port, Malthe Fischer's project navigates the themes of the narrative that unfolds to this day.

His debut album 'SOLAS' makes this journey with a series of heart-wrenching affairs in crisp detail. Appearing on Posh Isolation's recent compilation 'I Could Go Anywhere But Again I Go With You', Fischer's Scandinavian Star project here marked a long-anticipated return. Since his self-titled and widely loved cassette for Ascetic House, Fischer has been most prominent in the band Lust For Youth.

His hand is also across much of Posh Isolation, having mixed and mastered a number of releases. 'SOLAS' shares some of the floaty, melodramatic electronics of Lust For Youth's most elegant moments, but it's a different flavour of heartbreak and intrigue being pushed by Fischer in his solo work.

A symphony of disembodied voices trail across 'SOLAS'. Gesturing toward longing and hope, and occasionally struggling to get out of the misty collage of stumbling rhythms, it's as if we are listening to a form of wonder being mechanized before us.

The surface of Fischer's work is dense in detail, but falling for and fixating on the smallest thing often blossoms the most treasured effects. Minor acoustic instrumentation is precariously balanced against thickets of cut-up recordings and samples, the hybrid charge of the synthesizers holds everything together without letting anything recede.

As soft as 'SOLAS' feels, it stays sharp and bites at times, even through four-to-the-floor whispers. There's a memory of something communal in it all, and this is what holds on.

Cut from the same cloth as last year's double-cassette, 'Like All Mornings,' Vanessa Amara's new album trails shorthand piano pieces and wilted strings through magnificent, electro-acoustic surrounds, often settling into buzzing, syncopated reveries.

'Manos' takes its name from an abbreviated term of endearment. Spoken in this form, it's an affectionate and inclusive gesture from friend to friend, or indeed from gang member to gang member. Vanessa Amara seemingly take their cues from either usage.

Their new album feels hesitant to reveal its parts, and is perhaps a document of the limits of what can be revealed, a memorial to its own process as it winds itself in and around its delicately hued landscape.

Though beginning with a morose gait, the album quickly turns over. And revealing its softer self, the clarity of the moving string arrangements hang in the air like fine mist.

Everything settles against surfaces as the day breaks, opening up the space, though eventually condensing into the unnerving crescendo of the album's final piece. A recurrent, gentle whirring, much like a gramophone's needle, tracks through much of 'Manos.' It carefully steadies the listener into a mode of measuring duration, a meditative self-awareness that deliver's Vanessa Amara's world.

Always intricate, and effortlessly tender, 'Manos' is an album as textural as it is melodic, and it is certainly the most exquisite suite of works to have been presented by Vanessa Amara thus far.

  • Vanity Productions 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' - Cargo Records UK

Vanity Productions 'Only the Grains of Love Remain'

    £14.99

This latest work from Vanity Productions is a turbulence steadied to rest with care, and marks a critical high point in the project's evolution. As the nom de plume of Posh Isolation's co-founder Christian Stadsgaard, there is a deeply private yet fiercely empathic quality to 'Only the Grains of Love Remain.'

Pirouetting between his collaborative work with Loke Rahbek as Damien Dubrovnik, as well as The Empire Line with Varg and Iron Sight, to name just Stadsgaard's most recent activity, the inwardness reserved for Vanity Productions is perhaps a necessary step. That the emotive experimentation should generate such a touching soliloquy is an arresting watermark, presenting 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' as the most eloquent work of the project to date.

Following on from 'Mardini' last year, 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' takes a delicate and determined route through the terrain of Vanity Productions. Mapped with musique concrète's metrics, there is an uneasy sensation between guilty revulsion and cosmic longing captured in the moments of harmony.

Dissolving these small bursts of clarity-through-agony is however not a matter of exploring intensity with volume, or other such devices and motifs. With an almost bitter precision, Stadsgaard continually spikes the grounding compositional elements with unnervingly distant patterns of crisp synthetic alloys. Where weighted, gothic passages are undone into peaceful plateaus, and there is a sense of coveted respite from the body's adrenal chemistry.

Temporality is suspended, enough to solicit reflection. As the work coasts the mesh of decision/indecision, witness/actor, falling/flying, however it strikes, one gets the sense that the after-image of noise being articulated is in the end giving way to a greater cathartic broadcast that 'Only the Grains of Love Remain' documents: life, love, and thought.

When the fight-or-flight response edges in'adrenaline coursing and perception wired'our behaviour is especially spiked by an emotional intensity. And with that peak comes a trough. It's a chemical freefall, just like a crush.

Presented by Posh Isolation, 'Crush' marks the beginning of the end for Varg's turbulent Nordic Flora Series. Getting us lost in an exhilarating maze of fainting beauty and breaks, the fifth piece of the series invites us to relish the harmony just as much as the dissonance.

Following on from the previous iterations of the series, particularly the widely acclaimed 'Nordic Flora Series Pt.3: Gore-Tex City,' the cast of collaborators remain familiar.

Some faces are more prominent on this occasion, while others were folded into the series for the first time at last year's Berlin Atonal festival where Varg's Nordic Flora program was unveiled.

The album's most tender moments arrive when the acoustic instrumentation and ambient ascents cross and tangle with the spoken word performances from AnnaMelina and Chloe Wise. They speak in lullabies of decadence. And the sincerity catches you out, tapering the rush, awakening the crush. When working with both AnnaMelina and Vanity Productions, the gentle details get scaled up for bigger arenas, the track signalling a kinship with last year's Yung Lean collaboration.

Tracing another kind of intimacy is a collection of deft and agile club-cursed tracks that set a new level of scattered cohesion for Varg. Spirited and biting, they bump and quake with a whiplashed gait, effortless af. Not surprisingly, Varg configures this side of 'Crush' alone, perhaps letting this stormy intensity out just the once in a mournful piece with Ecco2k.

True to the Nordic Flora Series, the artwork comes from American multidisciplinary artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt. The artwork is presented in collaboration with international copyright agreements. Our burning passions light diverse paths, and as the fragility of the heart is learned and lamented, then surely a cause to celebrate this fate comes?

After "Star Alliance"'s initial release as a limited six tape-box set late last year, it was apparent that there was a need for a reissue, which now comes in the form of this remastered double LP set with a selection of the best work and even a few new tracks added.

The story is the same but the narrative has been sharpened. Over the last few years, Varg has manifested himself, not only as one of the most productive new voices in European electronic and techno music - with countless releases and projects - but also as one of the most interesting of the lot.

Completely free from any concern of genre notions towards his music, he moves freely between fields and does this in such a fluent way that it is hard to think of anyone that can match him. With the music that makes up "Star Alliance", it is clearer than ever before that Varg - while being an extremely talented techno producer, at the same time is much more than that.

"Star Alliance" has tracks of spacious acid standing next to heavy industrial rhythms, piercing abstract modular synth work, beautiful soundscapes, piano pieces and field recordings. And while the techniques, qualities and styles differ with almost every track, they stand perfectly together and shape a beautiful narrative.

Thematically "Star Alliance" deals with movement. The heavy melancholia that is present throughout the entire release, reminds us that when traveling to any destination, we will have to leave somewhere else behind. "Star Alliance" that takes its name from a point system between airline companies has a sort of sad restlessness about it.

Wherever we are traveling to, it is clear that we won't be there for long; the people are faceless and the cities nameless, The airports, night clubs and company blur, but Hilton always looks like Hilton and Ecstasy is called Ecstasy everywhere.

White Void is the solo project of Frederik Lind Köppen, who is known from many different projects over the last few years, lately as drummer of the 4 piece band Communions that released their debut Ep through Posh Isolation earlier this year.

White Void is a different beast, distorted & unique in its compositions, it is difficult to fit under any genre term.

While the production leans towards primitiv punk and metal, the tracks carry with them an underlying pop sensibility, that makes it hard to explain, but proves yet again that Frederik Lind Köppen is (even with his young age) already an incredibly talented song writer and a unique musical mind.

Young and unbalanced heart throbbing rock music.

"Whether thought of as a fistful of small change or as a digitally distributed asset, monetary exchange is best calculated for aesthetic ends at the planetary scale. Zoom out, and as far as you can. Yen Towers is Copenhagen's Simon Formann, known for his work as a member of Lower and Age Coin.

Bidders Must Justify Their Price tracks the mechanisms of global exchange and scales sound system dynamics to fit, preserving only the minimum quantity of human perspective necessary to calibrate itself for advanced club environments. One could describe BMJTP as a Skype meeting between the global financial system and a field recordist. Naturally, the inhuman register of such a system finds its perfect analogue in the sheer silence of the digital economy ' dark grids pumping 1s and 0s like blood.

Yet the dizzying and relentless movement of populations within this matrix is what Yen Towers is listening for, and capturing. The music itself is slick and propellant, with the pixelated fog of dub at the edge of everything ' this is a trace of how far Yen Towers has zoomed out.

The 12"" opens on uneasy garage-inflected terrain, giving little preparation for the hypnotic glances of one's own ficto-reality that is to come. However much the tracks on BMJTM swing, the circling motion of its minimalist techno components enmesh into a total environment that recognises you better than you recognise it. Club music for the world market.
