For Fans Of: Pulp, Disco, Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds.

The CE have been together since 2000 and earlier this year released their debut album proper “The Melancholy Death Of…”, an ambitious work that encompassed genres as diverse as prog-rock, folktronica and disco against a backdrop of lush, orchestral pop. It was universally well received, notably by the NME (8/10) “Interstellar Autumn” EP, is a 5 track CD single showcasing, in contrast to the album’s moody magnificence, the band’s more playful pop side.

The eponymous title track is a rare cover version medley. Here They combine Justin Hayward’s 70’s classic “Forever Autumn” (War Of The Worlds’ ost) with Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive”. The result is equal parts madness and inspiration, but played with such conviction that there is no hint of novelty.

Equal billing on the EP is shared with “You’re The Prettiest Thing”, the stand-out track from debut album, its Chic production and Studio 54 glamour enough to send you spinning optimistically across the disco floor.

Completing the EP are three more songs exclusive to this release: “Karin”, an uptempo pop number reminiscent of Pulp in their pomp; a cover of label mates The Butterflies of Love’s “Belt and Shoelaces” that adds a dance beat and a vocoder to the original’s musings on terrorism and the police state; and a radio edit of “Forever Autumn”.

    1. Interstellar Autumn

  • The Ladybug Transistor 'Cant Wait Another Day' - Cargo Records UK

The Ladybug Transistor 'Cant Wait Another Day'

    £4.99

For Fans Of: The Essex Green, Apples In Stereo, The Clientele, Jens Lekman.

The new album from legendary Brooklyn-based pop collective The Ladybug Transistor following on from their critically acclaimed self-titled release, Can't Wait Another Day is set to confirm the band's standing as some of the finest purveyors of lush, formalist pop music this side of the East River.

Ladybug Transistor  went on to craft the trilogy of The Albemarle Sound (1999), Argyle Heir (2001), and The Ladybug Transistor (2003). During this period The Ladybug Transistor developed and honed their trademark sound - a distillation of classic pop, characterized by a precise melodicism that is anchored by the restrained baritone of Olson.

As Marlborough Farms has become a gathering place for the musicians that Ladybug has befriended over the years, the band took advantage of this situation by recruiting many of them to contribute to their latest full length Can't Wait Another Day. The album features spirited contributions from members of Aislers Set, Architecture in Helsinki, The Clientele, Jens Lekman, Kevin Barker (Currituck Co., Vetiver), Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System, Instruments), Roy Nathanson (Lounge Lizards/Jazz Passengers) and others.

The first fruits of these sessions were heard on 2006's Here Comes The Rain EP, which also introduced two new members to the family, with Kyle Forester and Ben Crum of Great Lakes enhancing the Ladybug sound by adding inspired keyboards and guitar. Tragically though, drummer San Fadyl, a beloved figure in the indie rock community, passed away in April of this year due to complications from severe asthma. In addition to their own album, The Ladybug Transistor have recently worked with Soft Machine legend Kevin Ayers on his long-awaited new album Unfairground (Lomax Records).

    ARTROCKER ALBUM OF THE MONTH.

For Fans Of: The Beatles, The Stones, The Monkees, The Velvet Underground, Nuggets, Pocketbooks, The School, Still Flyin'. Revolver, Nevermind The Bollocks & Definitely Maybe -

The Loves new LP ...Love You is shorter than all of these AND it's got a member of the Velvet Underground as the voice of Jesus on it! Formed in Cardiff in 2000, The Loves released their debut single on Radio One DJ Huw Stephens' Boobytrap Singles Club in May 2001.

Their second album on Technicolor was made Album Of The Week in The Sunday Times. The band recorded four Peel sessions and have recorded nearly as many again for Marc Riley on BBC 6music.

This, The Love's final LP before they call time on ten years at the top on Valentine's Day 2011, was recorded at Soup Studios underneath East London's Duke Of Uke shop, as were their last two albums Technicolour and Three. It was mixed and mastered by Rob Jones of The Voluntary Butler Scheme fame and is as shiny a pop record you will hear this year. Spector-ish lead single December Boy has a wall of backing vocals from Emma Hall of Pocketbooks and former Love (now head of The School) Liz Hunt.

It was playlisted on BBC Radio 2 after winning Radcliffe & Maconie's Track Of The Week. Elswehere Nathaniel Mayer's 1966 soul single I Want Love and Affection (Not The House Of Correction) gets a Loves overhauling and made into a Merseybeat thing, while O! My Gawd features Mindy from the American group Still Flyin' on vocals in what is The Loves version of hip-hop. The Stones-y ballad I Lost My Doll To Rock'n'Roll and the Led Zeppelin rock of King Kong Blues show a harder side to the band. Doug Yule from The Velvet Underground is the voice of Jesus' answer-phone on It's¦The End Of The World to which producer Simon Trought contributes the Brian May harmony guitar solo at the end of the song.

The LP closes with a cover of comedian Jake Yapp's The Very Stars Were Meant For Us. This is The Loves' final LP because¦just because. 'A wide-eyed retro-chic indie-pop sextet that sound like The Monkees playing at being The Velvet Underground.' ' NME

Recorded between August 2007 & February 2008 at Soup in London & Battery Studios in Brooklyn, Three sees THE LOVES almost maturing.

Not much though. Most of the songs are still about girls. Except for the one about Coca-Cola. Says head Love, Simon- The basis of the record was recorded over 4 days in August with myself & Rob Jones (our long-term temp drummer) playing live together at Soup.

Those sounded ace by themselves & then we started throwing everything & the kitchen sink on as overdubs. Overdubs including an alarm clock on LP closer (or is it?) WAITING FOR TOMORROW & a synth battle between ex-Hefner frontman Darren Hayman & THE LOVES' keyboardist The Ed in the suite-like song, KALEIDOSCOPE (IN MY HEAD)Part of the recording was done in Brooklyn in January 2008. We know a few people over there & they asked us if we'd like to record some bits for the LP with them so we went over & did THE EX-GURLFRIEND with them & a few extra odds & ends says Simon. When asked about the influences present in this LP Simon said- The usual bubblegum pop bollocks, but specifically, Boyce & Hart, The Who, The Flaming Lips & Bob Markley's A Group LP.

The aforementioned ODE TO COCA-COLA is a love song to everyone's favourite drink. It's not wholly a 'Thumbs-up-for Coke' song though. There are a few of the more negative sides to drinking it in there says the group's spokesperson, Ziggy Rodriguez. There's also a loop of noise made with Coke bottles & cans that introduces the song like a cut-price version of Pink Floyd's Money.SWEET SISTER DELIA is a song dedicated to the doyen of the London indie scene & Artrocker correspondent- Miss Delia Dansette. We always stay at her house when we're in London so I thought we'd show her our gratitude with a song¦I'm sure she'd have preferred money or booze or something though The (almost) power ballad EVERYBODY IS IN LOVE is the song that the group tried to get Robyn Hitchcock to narrate.

We emailed him but got a polite Thank-you-no-good-luck reply Bastard.Jenna Love gets to show off her pipes on CAN YOU FEEL MY HEART BEAT? a sweary bluesy swaggering song about lust & its effects.3 also includes YOU DON'T HAVE TO a cover of an obscure bubblegum song originally performed by The Beeds & THE LOVES' last hit single ONE-TWO-THREE.

On First Frost, The Lucksmiths' trademark lyrical hooks shine warmer than ever '? and for the first time, all four members have racked up songwriting credits. Louis Richter's opener The Town and the Hills sets out the album's central theme of city v. country, while chief songwriter Marty Donald takes a sharpened pencil to the wilderness proper in Pines, concluding I don't mean to suggest I'm getting older, but the city looks its best over my shoulder.

Which is not to suggest that First Frost is The Lucksmiths' lost emo-country masterpiece. Song of the Undersea (with its nods to Jonathan Richman and to John Steinbeck) has a carefree swagger and a wicked way with a melody.

Similarly, A Sobering Thought (Just When One Was Needed) has hooks in abundance and concerns a late-night drunken escapade at a public swimming pool. Hey, why not?!

7TH studio album from the band described as Australia's answer to Belle and Sebastian, and the follow-up to the excellent 'Naturaliste' album from 2003.

As always, there are lots of guitars, some soothing basslines, and a singing drummer who's far better than Phil Collins, but this time there's also a horn section having a party, some fiery organs, a string section who dig Phil Spector, and a lazy pedal steel.

As well as their popularity among the indiepop community the lucksmiths are also the discerning Australian expat's band of choice and they have had many reviews and features in TNT magazine.

Not content to rest on the laurels of having one of the best and most talked-about albums of 2009, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart are back with Higher Than The Stars, four brand-new songs that do what the band does best – breathe fresh life into indie-pop with exuberance, charm and of course quality tunes.

From the New Wave-flavored bliss of "Higher Than The Stars" to the crashing power-pop of new live favorite "Twins," this EP is both a perfect summation of what The Pains are all about and a signpost to the future. Fizzy noise-pop is present and correct in the form of "103," and the band switches gears a bit for the brooding 80s-esque "Falling Over." ‘Stop The Music’ is the first single to be taken from The Pipettes upcoming second album, ‘Earth Vs The Pipettes’. A gleaming disco ballad inspired by the dance scenes in Spike Lee’s film ‘Summer Of Sam’ it continues the themes of their debut - speculating wildly on why boys remain a constant source of trouble - but projects these issues into a different place and time.

The girls who once doted on the harmonies of The Ronettes now play out their relationships to the beat of the discotheque. Studio 54, Larry Levan and Philly soul influence the beat and strings, frustration and sadness make the melody, creating a slab of dramatic pop with a classic chorus hook that never ages.

From Thelma Houston’s ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ to Robyn and Kleerup’s ‘With Every Heartbeat’, sadness and a fat beat always make for the best pop. It comes on limited edition red vinyl 7” and as a five song CD EP and digital bundle which includes a remix by one of The Pipettes favourite artists, Justus Köhncke of Kompakt.

For Fans Of: Indie pop, noise pop, folk pop¦ Fortuna POP!

Fortuna POP! is an independent UK record label responsible for a whole shed-load of great releases. Strictly a one man operation, the label has been run from bedrooms and kitchen tables in spare time away from the day job - the evenings, the wee early hours and weekends - for nigh on 18 years.

Unless you count 0% interest credit cards and having to re-mortgaging your flat, the label is completely self-funded. There is no single Fortuna POP! sound, just an ear for a good tune and the love of a finely turned lyric.

Be True To Your School is a compilation of the label's finest moments to date. There are too many great tracks to go into detail (read the booklet instead for the whole inside story).

There are too many great tracks to go into detail (read the booklet instead for the whole inside story) but it kicks off with the lo-fi hip-hop instrumental of Discordia, erstwhile Melody Maker Single of the Week, followed by the Sonic Youth-meets-Blur blast of Finlay. Next is Tender Trap, led by the indiepop legend Amelia Fletcher (cf Los Campesinos), followed by Australian modern-folk duo Sodastream, here in unusually upbeat full band form.

There's the drunk school orchestra madness of the ever inventive Bearsuit, the sassy hip-hop sampling latina pop of Cannonball Jane, the Pulp-meets-Studio 54 swirl of The Chemistry Experiment, and the bubblegum 60s pop of The Loves from their Sunday Times Album of the Week, followed by Tom Paulin spin-off micktravis with local nightclub singer Garfield Grieve on lead vocals.

Glen Campbell eat your heart out. Then there's the incredible Rob A Bank by Connecticut's The Butterflies Of Love, a song that caused John Peel to applaud on air, the MBV guitars of Spraydog, a Lulu cover courtesy of riot girls International Strike Force, the completely mad and joyous Pixies pop of Twinkie and the fabulous orchestral pop of the hotly tipped Fanfarlo.

Nearly at the end now. There's jangly international indiepop heroes The Lucksmiths, the comic genius (you decide) of MJ Hibbett, the lo-fi New York punk of Taking Pictures (Fortuna POP!'s first ever release), Airport Girl's stream of consciousness Americana, Mogul's trashy synth pop and Milky Wimpshake's peerless punk pop.

Finally there's San Francisco's The Aislers Set with a track from their Times Album of the Week, the quintessentially English Would-Be-Goods ex of él records, the indiepop classic that is You Can Hide Your Love Forever by Comet Gain, and bringing it all to a close, the gentle elephant 6 pop of Homescience. It's all here. Be true to your school.

The long awaited second album New Gods by WITHERED HAND (aka Edinburgh based folk-rock troubadour Dan Willson) will be released in March via Fortuna POP! (UK/Europe) and Slumberland (US/Canada).

The eleven meditations on love, fidelity and transience therein see Willson's songwriting hit dizzying heights: by turns confessional and melancholy, raucous and life-affirming; his trademark dark humour turned down a wee notch; life, in all its many facets, turned up to full.Active in the world of visual art and dabbling in music for many years, Dan Willson came late to singing and songwriting at age 30, in a period of reflection between the death of a close friend and the birth of his first child. The resultant material, much of which went on to become the album Good News, was praised for its depth and startling honesty, and won him accolades from the likes of Rolling Stone and Mojo, as well as fans from Jarvis Cocker to Marc Riley.

The ensuing years saw him embraced by the now defunct Fife-based musical powerhouse the Fence Collective and his songs picked up by MTV and cult series Skins.A prolific live performer, recent Withered Hand shows have included Pam Berry of seminal 90s US noisepop band Black Tambourine (who also contributes vocals to the new album) amid a rotating cast of musical friends embellishing Dan's exuberant and original songwriting, alongside his fragile and uplifting solo performances.Aided by a grant from arts council body Creative Scotland, New Gods saw Withered Hand entering a proper studio for the first time to work with legendary Scottish producer Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, Mountain Goats, Teenage Fanclub), and features guest appearances from a veritable who's who of Scottish music including King Creosote, Eugene Kelly of The Vaselines, and members of Belle & Sebastian (Stevie Jackson, Chris Geddes) and Frightened Rabbit (Scott Hutchison).Across the eleven songs on New Gods, Willson deals with the big stuff: love, death, friendship, infidelity, road trips, stargazing and cough mixture abuse. First single proper, the magnificent 'Horseshoe', kicks off proceedings with its plaintive entreaty Please don't put a shadow on her lung. Love and the fear of loss is the theme here. Nobody you love will ever die, sings Dan.

It's followed by the album taster track 'Black Tambourine', the purest pop song on the album, an anti-hipster anthem that jangles in all the right places. 'King Of Hollywood' details a night in LA with Willson's friend and mentor King Creosote, Willson's keen eye for detail as hilarious as ever, while title track 'New Gods' sees him transported to Switzerland, cutting across the fields at night and staring up at the Milky Way, like a huge ribbon across the sky, infinitely beautiful and humbling.

This is widescreen pop music par excellence. The five years since Good News was recorded has seen Willson honing his craft, building his audience and gaining critical momentum. The new album is a beautifully executed collection of songs from one of Scotland's most gifted songwriters.
