Aidan Baker 'Noise Of Silence' CD

    £16.99

Beautiful 5-color printing on a custom 6-panel packaging. Limited to 400 copies.

The always impressive and prolific Aidan Baker creates thick walls of doomgaze on the Nadja duo, but under his own name he manages to explore a much more personal world, offering inspiring and mind altering drone music to his established fan base.

Released in 2007 as a very limited edition CDR, Noise Of Silence is one of our top favorite Baker’s lost gems that truly deserved a special treatment.

A single, spontaneously composed, yet majestically structured 50 minute opus of swirling processed guitars, tape loops and noise bursts. Fear-inspiring in essence, the album slowly builds up a suffocating and trance inducing atmosphere around fragmented subliminal messages from a suicidal voice. Dangerously persuasive, we dare to say. Utterly intoxicating, Aidan exercises patience to reach the disturbing climaxes of Noise Of Silence. Definitely not your typical dose of gentle and dreamy Baker solo.

As an interesting note, a friend and fellow Baker fan reveals that the suicidal voice heard on the album is from Romeo Dallaire, a Canadian general who in the 90′s headed the UN troops ill-fated attempt to stop the genocide taking place in Rwanda. He returned to Canada with post-traumatic stress syndrome and actually attempted suicide in 2000.

We care for sound quality as much as we care for presentation, so the album is now fully revised and remastered by James Plotkin, unveiling buried sounds we couldn’t notice on the original release.

    Atomine Elektrine 'Nebulous' CD

    £14.99

Presented in an snowy white gatefold digisleeve and tracing paper packaging.

On this second installment for Essence Music, Peter Andersson brings Atomine Elektrine to an utterly refined and perfectionist sphere!

The trancey beats and sacral atmosphere of Binomial Fusion are past and widely replaced by a truly out-of-body, deeply layered and dynamic cosmic experience in form of a masterful ambience filled with energy outbursts, synthetic movements and algorithmical rhythms. An aural projection for a detailed exploration of nebulas, black holes, exploding stars and unknown deep corners of the cosmos.

Very much influenced by the electronic side of the kraut scene and with the ability of imposing his very own classic trademark, Andersson sets a new stone and makes Nebulousone of the greatest albums related to this genre since the early 70’s. Another amazing proof of talent from this Swedish genius!

Boris 'Soundtrack From Film Mabuta No Ura'

    £19.99

The Japanese masters of drone and analog feedback never cease to amaze us. Fans actually never know what to expect from a new album. Sludgy guitar riffs, super distorted psych rock or mighty minimal drones? Just be prepared for a new masterpiece, the way only they seem to do it.

Soundtrack From Film Mabuta No Ura (translated as “Backside Of The Eyelids”) presents Boris at their most abstract personality. A stunning guitar-driven psychedelic voyage to an imaginary land where Pink Floyd’s “More” meditates with Sunn 0))) drenched in ambience and feedback!

Being a flowing and brooding soundtrack to an imaginary film conceived by the three band members, the album manages to present the listener to a number of moods and soundscapes without actually breaking out of its shell. From mellow, dreamy Syd Barret-inspired acoustic incursions, hazy vocals, slow post-rock tones and rhythms to occasional bursts of dynamics passing through avant-noise experiments and mammoth deep drones of blasting energy (like on the 12 minutes long “Space Behind Me (Part 1)”). A contemplative masterwork!

Hard to imagine what sort of film Mabuta No Ura must be? The evocative sounds here give us freedom to conjure up appropriate images and quoting Atsuo’s own words: “This is a soundtrack for images that appear on the mabuta no ura of the listeners, by reading the stories contained on the album and listening to the music. It’s dew made from unconsciousness of Boris members. The dewdrops are spun into thread and the thread forms a whole story. The way we refer to images of the daily lives.”

We are glad to present this extended Brazilian/world CD version of Soundtrack From Film Mabuta No Ura, containing different artwork and exclusive extra music not available on the Japanese CD/LP, housed in a slipcase that holds our luxurious custom heavy mini-replica of the gatefold vinyl including a set of cards unveiling mabuta no ura stories and photos of the band members taken from an European trip.

    Circle 'Soundcheck' CD

    £16.99

    Limited edition of 800 copies.

Recorded in Finland in October 2009, the band describes Soundcheck as “the most contemporary document possible of a Circle soundcheck/concert experience. For this concert Circle was reinforced by the guitars of J. & P. Jaaskelainen, who may be familiar to some from the ranks of Circle's brother-in-arms Pharaoh Overlord. On the album, this expanded line-up explores the experimental possibilities of concert staples “Virsi” and “Nopeuskuningas” further than possibly ever before.”

“The first part offers two new tracks, beginning with the brief “Kukkakaalia Kapteenit!”, a wispy swirl of shimmery synths, laid back tribal drumming and some dramatic, emotional crooning, very cinematic sounding, almost like it could be some lost 4AD single, dreamy and ethereal, giving way to the way more rocking and intense “Tuhatsata”, which takes up most of the side, a slow burning, blackened bit of Finnish krautrock, super epic, with dueling vocals, crooning versus grunted and growled, fusiony keys, still more tribal drumming, spidery guitars, the track pulsing and pounding, building to multiple crescendos, frenzied freakouts that always lip right back into more looped mesmer.

The album progresses with two instantly recognizable live set staples, first up, “Virsi”, dramatically progtastic, with that super soaring epic intro, all dynamic shifts and huge bursts of instrumental crunch, with vocals howling and wailing almost operatically, before lurching into some rad atonal krauty, fusiony, jazzy, hypno groove skitter. The second track, another Circle classic, and live staple, “Nopeuskuningas”, explodes right out of the gate, with its chugging almost surfy, ZZ Top-ish boogie riff, locked in groove, the whole thing stretched out over the remainder of the side, the band solid, and hypnotic, and intense, and rocking and tight as fuck. Their showstopper for sure, and it clearly did the job at this show as well.

In so much as between albums, Circle, like Grateful Dead, crank out killer live record after killer liver record, often with some of the same songs, always including a few live staples, familiar enough to hit the spot, but different enough that a Circle fan could be forgiven for needing them ALL!” (Aquarius Records)

A stunning and truly unique live album approach by the Finnish masters of hypnorock and unusual sounds.

Originally released as a very limited vinyl edition via J. Lehtisalo’s own imprint Full Contact Records and instantly sold out, Soundcheck is now back to life housed in our luxurious, heavy tip-on mini-LP gatefold packaging featuring fantastic expanded photography and artwork by Jussi S. Karjalainen.

Presented in our custom 6-panel digisleeve packaging with stunning and desolate photography by Seldon Hunt. Not coincidentally mastered by no one else than Jouni Ollila (aka Ulvtharm, from the MZ.412 fame) at oLLiLaboratories Studios. Limited to 400 copies.

One third of the cult post-industrial Swedish legends MZ.412, one half of the amazing experimental act Beyond Sensory Experience and Nordvargr’s long running loyal partner on classic endeavors – including the abyssal black ambient duo Nordvargr/Drakh. With such high caliber résumé, we are more than honored to present the first Drakh solo album!

While mostly known for his demonic, truly Swedish guitar interventions on the MZ.412 or N/D pitch black ambiences, Bethlehem finds Jonas Aneheim walking through slow, quasi-harmonic, subtle, yet thick drone fields weaving elaborate and unexpected damaged electronic rhythms and harsh, crackling ambient textures that can become – at the same time – both delicate and haunting, warm and freezing, to finally drown in a sea of reverb, glacial riffing and distortion on his own shadowy interpretation of the city of Bethlehem. Simply perfect.

Masterfully conceived and recorded on the road during his many world travels over the past years – from the US State of Indiana to Asia –, the album successfully narrates unknown angles from these places via ominous sonic vistas and pallets that truly honor the charming aura and tradition of the bleakest Swedish sounds.

Expo Seventy 'Virtually From The Unknown'

    £17.99

CD edition strictly limited to 200 copies housed in our sturdy, matte laminated tip-on mini-LP gatefold packaging. Features expanded artwork not available on the sold-out LP edition on Sonic Meditations.

Expo '70 is mainly known for being the work of Justin Wright with the occasional contribution of other musicians, primarily dabbling in the realm of drone, krautrock, psychedelic rock and kosmische music. Virtually From The Unknown features a trio line-up – thus the subtly modified “Expo Seventy” nom de guerre – of Wright accompanied by Aaron Osborne and Mike Vera.

Born as a true krautrock hypnotist, the music here is by no means a departure from Wright's beloved trademark. With his cosmic synths and guitar rounded out by Osborne and Vera's bass and drums, the 31 minute epic “Figures In Black Turn Night Back Into Day” presents a heavier doom-inspired psychedelic journey that slowly builds an inner tangled web of sounds towards a crunching momentum where the rhythm section carves out a wall of mesmerizing rumbling grooves. The man definitely feels comfortable and inspired in experimenting his washes of textures while breaking loose on more free rock-esque guitar playing. “Closet Full Of Candles” opens as a huge Sabbath riff to quickly become dismantled by a wash of psychedelic jamming and mystical blown-out guitar shapes – ominous and restrained enough to thankfully not go into the stoner rock pitfall. The closing track, “Planet Ego, The Astral Return To Yourself”, returns to a familiar ambient territory – minimal, spacey electronic sounds with the addition of blooping analog synth soundscapes accompanied by cymbal scrapes and low throbbing drones travelling the galaxy.

Recorded live and treated in the studio, the Essence Music edition contains the full, unedited 58 minute set of juggernautic dark psychedelia. A crown jewel in Expo '70's stellar catalog!

Lavishly assembled in a custom 6-panel digisleeve packaging housing a 6 cards set with beautiful watercolor paintings and artwork by the gifted Portuguese artist L Filipe dos Santos. Superb mastering via James Plotkin. Limited to 800 copies.

Call it drone-doom-dirge-shoegaze or any other in vogue nomenclature you like. It doesn’t matter. The music is so sublime and superb that we consider a waste of time trying to further categorize the spiraling sounds exhaling from a Nadja album. They are simply the true originators of this bred of blissful, seriously intense and ominously ethereal heavy sounds and one the few acts – along with the genius solo work from the duo’s main composer, Aidan Baker – we are truly obsessed with these days. That said, we are more than glad to welcome the Canadian duo to Essence Music with an immense masterwork!

Autopergamene – a spell or charm wherein you write in blood, on a fragment of skin, what you wish to happen – finds Nadja at the peak of their sonic language of slow-blooming, heavily nuanced ambient guitar constructions and slow motion, lush, epic heaviness.

Divided in three colossal movements, the album starts with the blissful, paced and almost orchestral – much aided by three guest members on strings and Aidan’s trombone, flute and piano – “You Write Your Name in My Skin”, travels through the straight up, super distorted and fuzzed out rumbling sludge riffages of “You Write Your Name in My Head” and its semi-growling processed vocals to finally unfold the nearly half-hour long “You Write My Name in Your Blood” that gracefully starts with delicate, lush acoustic guitars glacially giving birth to an enormous, shimmering and heavily layered symphonic wall to then submerge and bring in a hazy, sparkling and almost passionate, yet twisted, duetto of Aidan-Leah’s male-female voices. Breathtaking.

    Nadja 'Queller (Second Edition)'

Second edition on CD. Strictly limited to 450 copies housed in our luxurious, sturdy tip-on mini-LP gatefold packaging.

Features slightly modified and expanded artwork, including a silkscreened poster and die-cut bellyband.

Nadja's absolutely unique and incredible splicing of extreme doom, shoegaze and experimental music that the Canadian duo – currently based in Berlin – likes to call dreamgaze is of such beauty and heaviness that it can crumble skyscrapers and mesmerize souls in absolute bliss and colossal majesty.

Calmer and more structured when compared to their other albums, "Queller" is their newly crafted masterpiece where the band explicitly dives back into the new wave and post-punk era to combine those influential sonorities with an amalgam of immense and gorgeous sludging heavy guitar constructions.

As the mastermind Aidan Baker wisely says, "Killing Joke, Joy Division and Wire reinterpreted through the Nadja spectrum". The ethereal, lush and slow-motion heaviness of tracks like "Dark Circles" and the crushing blasts of "Lidérc" per se are true statements of an album of epic proportions. Nadja at its absolutely best.

The third Nadja installment for Essence Music and a much anticipated contrasting follow-up to the dreamgaze masterpiece “Queller”.

"Sv" or 'Sievert' in full – an unit measuring ionizing radiation in human tissue – was originally composed to be performed at a pair of festivals in Berlin – one with a theme of apocalypse and armageddon, the other an outdoor rave under an expressway on-ramp.

Comprised of a long, single 42 minute composition, the album combines Nadja’s layered, textural noise with polyrhythmic drum patterns that, in their structure, approach industrial that might almost be danceable.

Pounding, punishing machinelike hypnotic pulses, harsh cymbals and caustic textures grow together and collide in a massive metallic maelstrom of piercing doom-dirge heaviness.

A surprising, yet rewarding departure from your typical Nadja dose of slow-blooming, nuanced ambient guitar constructions.Lavishly assembled in a mini-LP sized custom 6-panel digisleeve packaging with gorgeous artwork by Seldon Hunt and mastering by James Plotkin.

Troum & Raison D'être 'De Aeris In Sublunaria Influxu'

Ever wondered how a mix of Troum and Raison d’être would sound like? Here is the long awaited answer. Four years in the making – carefully forged between 2011 and 2014 -, De Aeris In Sublunaria Influxu showcases a magically crafted alchemy between these two titans of the drone and ambient realms. Troum navigate through cavernous, subterranean spaces where cyclical sounds reverberate towards impressive crescendos of icy noise, luminous drones and dramatic, guitar-driven ghostly melodies. Their truly unique gorgeous soundscapes shine in a perfect symbiotic movement with the Swedish dark ambient maestro Peter Andersson.

Engulfed in a hauntingly beautiful kaleidoscope of grey-ish melancholia, Raison d’être comfortably walks deeply into Troum’s vast territory, delivering his very own trademark of eerie tones, ominous sacral ambience and crystal clear constructions. Finally out this mighty masterpiece of dark and wild psychedelia from the Japanese three- piece legends! Fuzz and reverb drenched jamming sounds from the basements of Hamamatsu evoking the always welcomed ghosts of Amon Düül and Les Rallizes Denudes.

Originally released as an instantly sold-out LP edition on Sloow Tapes in 2011, we decided to do justice and make The Night Is Yours available again, this time as a CD edition limited to 200 copies. Housed in our high quality tip-on mini-LP gatefold packaging (plus insert) featuring new sonic treatment by the mastermind Aoki Tomoyuki and expanded trippy artwork by Bart De Paepe!

“Tokyo psych monsters Up-Tight come out of the classically wasted/drug-damaged school of excessive fuzz and reverb, giving the nod to the endless jam style of Les Rallizes Denudes while spiking their sound with dark downer ballads that owe as much to The Jacks as they do to The Velvet Underground.

The Night Is Yours is the absolute apex of their catalogue to date, crossing beautiful comedown folk-psych moves with whole sides of extended scorch. Indeed, there’s a new focus on psychedelic ritual here, especially apparent on the staggering “She’s So Heavy” with choirs of disembodied monks chanting in the background while the bass – played with all of the thunderous power of Mik from Kousokuya – marches the group ever forward and vocalist Tomoyuki hovers over the track like a wraith. If you can picture Spacemen 3 circa “The Perfect Prescription” produced by Ghost circa “Temple Stone” then you’re close to the outrageous levels of psychedelic excess captured here. Tomoyuki’s guitar tone has to be heard to be believed, with tactile garage punk crunch put to the service of endlessly euphoric orbits of three droning chords.

Up-Tight have been responsible for a buncha the most memorable releases to come out of the post-PSF underground but this has to be their recorded pinnacle, the perfect balance of two chord Velvet downers and strung-out post-Rallizes string violence. One of our records of the year so far! Highly recommended!” (Volcanic Tongue)
