“I wasn’t planning on making a record,” says Juliana Hatfield, of her new “Pussycat” album. In fact, she thought her songwriting career was on hiatus, and that she had nothing left to say in song form; that she had finally said it all after two decades as a recording artist.

But then the presidential election happened. “All of these songs just started pouring out of me. And I felt an urgency to record them, to get them down, and get them out there.” She booked some time at Q Division studios in Somerville, Massachusetts near her home in Cambridge and went in with a drummer (Pete Caldes), an engineer (Pat DiCenso) and fourteen brand-new songs.

Hatfield produced and played every instrument other than drums—bass, keyboards, guitars, vocals. From start to finish—recording through mixing—the whole thing took a total of just twelve and a half days to complete.“It was a blur. It was cathartic,” says Hatfield. “I almost don’t even understand what happened in there, or how it came together so smoothly, so quickly. I was there, directing it all, managing it, getting it all done, but I was being swept along by some force that was driving me.

The songs had a will, they forced themselves on me, or out of me, and I did what they told me to do. Even my hands—it felt like they were not my hands. I played bass differently-- looser, more confident, better.” “Pussycat” comes on the heels of last year’s Hatfield collaboration with Paul Westerberg, the I Don’t Cares’ “Wild Stab” album, and before that, 2015’s Juliana Hatfield Three (“My Sister”, “Spin The Bottle”) reunion/reformation album, “Whatever, My Love”.

“I’ve always been prolific and productive and I have a good solid work ethic but this one happened so fast, I didn’t have time to think or plan,” says Hatfield. “I just went with it, rode the wave. And now it is out of my hands. It feels a little scary.”

”Pussycat” is being released into a very tense, divided and inflamed America. The songs are reflective of that atmosphere—angry (“When You’re A Star”), defiant (“Touch You Again”), disgusted (“Rhinoceros”), but also funny (“Short-Fingered Man”), reflective (“Wonder Why”), righteous (“Heartless”) and even hopeful (“Impossible Song”, with its chorus of ‘What if we tried to get along/and sing an impossible song’).

Tanya Donelly is a singer-songwriter and founding member of three of the most successful bands of the post-punk era.

At the age of 16, she and stepsister Kristin Hersh formed Throwing Muses, which became the first American band ever signed to the influential British label 4AD. Not only did the Muses' dreamy, swirling guitar sound prove highly influential on many of the alternative acts to emerge in their wake, but they also made any number of unprecedented advances into the male-dominated world of underground rock.

Donelly later sidelined with Pixies bassist Kim Deal to form the Breeders, appearing on the debut LP, Pod. She later exited both the Breeders and Throwing Muses to form her own band, Belly.

After issuing a pair of well-received EPs, Belly released their full-length debut, Star -- a superb collection of luminous, fairy tale-like guitar pop songs -- and for the first time in her career, Donelly earned commercial success commensurate to her usual critical accolades.

Not only did the record go gold on the strength of the hit single 'Feed the Tree' but the band even garnered a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Donelly would eventually disband Belly to raise her two daughters. She still found time to write and record music as a solo artist -- Beautysleep, Whiskey Tango Ghosts and This Hungry Life were all exceptional albums and enjoyed critical success.

The Swan Song Series is a collection of songs in which Donelly collaborated with friends, musicians and authors such as Rick Moody, Robyn Hitchcock, John Wesley Harding, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang (Damon + Naomi/Galaxie 500), Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom), Tom Gorman (Belly), and Claudia Gonson (Magnetic Fields), and explored an impressive range that wasn't always captured on previous albums.

This exclusive collection includes the first 5 self-released digital EP's + 7 brand new, previously unreleased, tracks on a 31 song set.

Black Vinyl, 33rpm, Standard Jacket, Limited to 500. Includes Digital Download Code + Promotional Decal inside.

The Juliana Hatfield Three has reformed with the original  lineup of Todd Philips (drums), Dean Fisher (bass), and Juliana  Hatfield (guitar, vocals, keyboards, percussion) to release their  sophomore album Whatever, My Love.

Recorded at Nuthouse Recording in Hoboken, NJ and co-produced by  Hatfield and Tom Beaujour (Nada Surf, Guided By Voices, Minor Alps),  the twelve songs on Whatever, My Love are gorgeous and punk, sleazy  and sweet, unsentimental and funny.

Hatfield, humble as always,  acknowledges that, "We haven't totally reinvented the wheel or  anything" with this new album and that the recordings exhibit "stuff I  am sort of known for, I guess": a guitar-centric melodicism and lyrical examinations of emotional confusion. "But I am a lot more confident now than I was then with the first album. And I had more fun recording this one."

Whatever, My Love comes 21 years after the trio's Become What You Are  debuted on Atlantic Records. The 1993 album was an influential force  of uncompromising, original guitar pop/rock and secured a permanent place in alternative rock history with the radio hits "My Sister" and  "Spin The Bottle."

    Tracklisting:
    1. Invisible
    2. Now That I Have Found You
    3. Ordinary Guy
    4. If Only We Were Dogs

    10. I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands
    11. Wood

With their new album, The Juliana Hatfield Three has in a sense  responded to its former directive to "become what you are" by making  an album that is exactly what it wants to be, identifiable in its  acceptance--and celebration--of the eternally unknowable and unsolvable.
