New single Limited edition cassette on Scratchy.

Music. What is it good for ? Maybe music starts where words finish.

We spend our lives absorbed by thoughts, experiences, emotions. Sometimes we can translate these into words, sometimes we need something more. Something.. other. We need sound.

Sound hotwires us direct to the soul. There are no diversions, no double meanings. There is only the purity of sound. Over a lifetime we become a living record of these sounds, a collection of sensory triggers that will transport us back in time to moments of joy, despair and everything in between.

‘I Remember’ is a collage of some of these moments. Of dancing with joy just because, of feeling the clouds draw in on a relationship, of becoming aware of music, of love. And ultimately of the realisation that there is no answer and all the roads are yellow bricked. As the song says..‘we’re just painting the bruises of our heads against the wall’.

The single is the title track from Bromide’s new album ‘I Remember’ produced by legendary producer Brian O’Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, MBV). It comes with two unreleased tracks – ‘Lovely New York’ an acoustic cover of a song by the late Tarka Cordell, former school bandmate of Bromide singer Simon Berridge and ‘Treasure Map’ the demo version of a track from previous Bromide album ‘Some Electric Sometime’.

    Tracklisting:
    1. I Remember
    2. Lovely New York
    3. Treasure Map (Demo)

"Bromide mix the best bits of The Lemonheads and Dinosaur Jr replete with melancholic melodies and J Mascis-ish guitar lines" Vive Le Rock

"‘I Remember’ is a brisk, snappy affair, which combines super-melodicism with athletic, abrasive guitars. Berridge’s confessional lyrics pull off the double feat of being both refreshingly down-to-earth and also angular at the same time" pennyblackmusic.co.uk

First release for the electric band line-up since 1998

London band Bromide's new album I Remember'is a nostalgic rollercoaster ride round the icons of scuffed up fuzzy guitar pop. There's nods to 80s hardcore heroes Husker Du, the yearning melodies of Teenage Fanclub, the gymnastic pop/rock straddling of The Only Ones and even mid-70s Top of the Popster Steve Harley gets a look in on lead track Wheels'.

Elsewhere there are encounters with rediscovered jazz legends and whimsical buskers Henry Grimes', the tale of a teenage quest for the seeds of flower power Lion Tamer's Jacket'and in the title track I Remember'an array or early musical memories assembled in a dream sequence show and tell. Magnetic Fields get a good going over as well with a Les Paul friendly re-working of their classic 'I don't want to get over you'.

At the helm is legendary producer Brian O'Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, MBV) dispensing an economy to proceedings that's got Robert Pollard checking his stopwatch.

Bromide are - Simon Berridge (Guitar/Vocals), Ed Lush (Drums) and Hugo Wilkinson (Bass/Backing vocals)

'Romping, indie-pop blast that recalls the heyday of The Only Ones' The Times

In 2015 London-based Bromide got their electric shoes back on with new bass player Hugo Wilkinson joining long-term collaborators, singer-guitarist Simon Berridge and drummer Ed Lush.

The resulting album I Remember'was described by Vive Le Rock as mixing 'the best bits of The Lemonheads and Dinosaur Jr replete with melancholic melodies and J Mascis-ish guitar lines" and won news fans including Gideon Coe on BBC6 who dubbed their single Mr. Ciccone's Daughter''Fantastic !' and played it for several months at the end of 2016.

Another vital piece of the puzzle had also fallen into place as they'd found producer Brian O'Shaughnessy at Bark Studios who seamlessly welded their pop onto their rock and last year the band returned to Bark to record their sixth album I Woke Up'.

Again stuffed full of pop delights struggling to reach the 3 minute mark such as Two Song Slot', the story of a disastrous open-mic encounter turning into a last minute victory and Tale To Tell'a conscience-pricked near perfect example of the Bromide sound written in the studio while recording, the album also sees the band begin to stretch their wings a bit.

Magic Coins'has an unexpected almost drum and bass inspired rhythm track while album closer and title track I Woke Up'is a 6 minute Doorsian odyssey. The song began life as a response to the biopic Mr. Turner'and in particular the scene in the film where the painter is tied to a mast in order to experience the full force of a nocturnal storm.

Starting with Berridge's Glenn Branca inspired intro Lush and Wilkinson then latch on a full-on krautrock groove to build the track through to an epic conclusion complete with thunder, rain and anything else lying round the studio.

Elsewhere Patti Smith's Dancing Barefoot'is given a thorough work out plus there are contributions from the rhythm section with Lush writing the music for both I'll Never Learn'and Always Now'while Wilkinson provides a breath of fresh air in proceedings with the instrumental Futurist Shore Leave'.

With I Woke Up'Bromide have firmly fixed the songwriter onto the band and vice-a-versa. As one recent twitter live review summed up 'They rock hard but the tunes come first: like Elvis Costello fronting Dinosaur Jr' Ain't gonna argue with that.

Magic Coins'is an unexpected rhythm track that is seemingly drum and bass-inspired, written collectively by all three band members. Bromide are Simon Berridge on vocals and guitar, Ed Lush on drums, and Hugo Wilkinson on bass.

These songbirds worship at the altars of Husker Du, Teenage Fanclub, The Replacements, Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr., The Only Ones, Buffalo Tom and other melodic rockers equally obsessed by songs, songwriting and the euphoria associated with playing music through amplified electronic equipment.

Hailing from London, their sound has been described as "Grant Hart fronting Sebadoh" and "Elvis Costello fronting Dinosaur Jr."

Vive Le Rock noted that they mix 'the best bits of The Lemonheads and Dinosaur Jr. replete with melancholic melodies and J Mascis-ish guitar lines".

    Unrequited love. Madonna.

This isn’t actually a song about un-requited love for Madonna. Her Madgesty did however have a role to play. Simon, singer of London noise pop 3-piece Bromide explains..

“Rewind to the early ‘90s. I think it was midweek.. probably about 9pm ? I was on my way home in a cab - which in itself was unusual. Where did I get the money ? Was there a tube strike ? Anyway the urge suddenly overtook me to find out once and for all if there was anything more to a long-standing friendship with my friend Clare. I knew we were quite close to her flat in Westbourne Grove so I asked the cabbie to change direction.

Rang the buzzer. Flatmate says she’s in the bath. Oh gawd.. I go in and wait. It feels like I’m at the Doctor’s.. Clare appears and breaks the news to me that whatever it is that has brought me here will have to wait as.. Madonna is about to be interviewed on TV by Jonathon Ross. What ?? Really.. Noww ?? How come I didn’t know about this Amazingly Important Fact ? And yes, yes of course I can wait a bit longer. It really is no problem !

After about an hour including adverts, I finally get my chance to speak.. 'I, ahem, err… think that I, cough, err, y’know err.. Love.. You..' I splutter with a kind of question mark phrasing. She says ‘I thought you were going to say that’..and we’ve been great friends ever since.

Sometimes you know you know but you still just have to actually y’know.. Know.

B-side, I Don’t Want To Get Over You,  is a Stephen Merritt gem from Magnetic Fields ‘69 Love Songs’. Both tracks from Bromide album ‘I Remember’ produced by Brian O’Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, MBV).

'A chunk of pop-rock with a dash of humour.. Reminds me of Fountains of Wayne"
    Gary Crowley, BBC London

'A golden voice' - Consequence Of Sound

I Like Taylor Swift is a sub-3-minute powerpop rock'n'roll anthem channelling the licks of Fountains Of Wayne and Weezer which tells of Coach Hop brainchild Charlie Laurence's fondness'for the Country Queen Pop Music Maven, Taylor Swift, using a tongue-in-cheek humour that's more disarming than it is distracting.

On the surface, I LikeTaylor Swift is a lovesong to the titular popstar but upon closer inspection, is an observation on the state of the modern music industry, 'In the song I admit I haven't really listened to much of her music but I'm inundated with images and stories about her' says Charlie. Throughout the song it verges on an admission that it's not cool to like Taylor Swift but in his trademark style, Charlie doesn't care what anyone else thinks, as he sings 'I like Taylor Swift and I don't care who knows it, it's not a guilty pleasure, it's just a normal pleasure.'

The accompanying video is a state of the art'animated affair using techniques that are an industry first, produced by Charlie's brother, and BBC Creative's Head of Design Lawrence Honderick and Sam Humphries.

The release's B-side; Everything's Fine is a subversive and evocative social commentary that expresses Charlie's acerbic wit and lookon life with the lyric: '
They say every cloud has a silver lining but I'm not a believer. I'm not gonna be bitter about it, but I don't have to be happy about it either. Everything's fine, and nothing's gonna be alright.'

'3rd album from Manc indie-rockers is a twin-guitared lockdown diary tunefest'

Produced by Simon ‘Ding’ Archer (PJ Harvey, The Pixies, The Fall) at 6db studios in Salford, the album title seems to refer to the lockdown period in one sense, a document of that time, but as frontman Tom Long elaborates: “It also harks back to pre-lockdown, when there was actually a possibility of some change on offer. Unfortunately we’re forbidden from talking about that. There were solutions to many of the problems we face now, but that dream was crushed, never to be spoken of again”. Manchester indie-rockers Easter have built a reputation as one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Spurred along by singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom Long with a rotating cast of Manc-underground shredders, they’re a formidable live act who’ve toured the UK repeatedly and provided support for post-rock behemoths Mono, avant-rockers Ranga and Mugstar but also poppier acts such as Canadian shoe-gazers Tallies.

However, for all of Manchester’s illustrious musical history,
it’s hard to bring to mind a local act that they compare or aspire to. Instead Easter’s binoculars are fixed on the fuzzy indie-rock of Dinosaur Jr , Guided By Voices and Teenage Fanclub with added twin-guitar weaving recalling the articulate jams of Television, Chris Forsyth and even Wishbone Ash. Only in Tom’s vocals are there occasional hints of their surroundings with echoes of the Mozza and a few junctions away across the M62, Dave Gedge.

They’ve found admirers in Huw Stephens and Tom Ravenscroft at 6Music and garnered praise from Uncut, Record Collector and NYC’s The Big Takeover while building a loyal fanbase across the UK.

One friend. Two bands. And so it was that Manchester's 'Easter' and London's 'Bromide' met in their mutual pal Dave Armes's address book (he of Last Harbour, LCR Records and A-Sun Amissa sidekick repute). Soon after Easter were on their way down t'smoke to play at Bromide's place, namely the Birds Nest in Deptford. And verily did they smash it! So much so that Bromide singer Simon immediately thought about putting something out on his Scratchy Records label.. and why not keep the threads twisting and make it a joint release!

Especially as both bands share a love of alt. sounds from across the pond back in dem 90s days. Easter feasting on Buffalo Tom's heavier riffs, Yo La Tengo and San Francisco's 'Swell', while Bromide reminded Easter's mainman Tom of 'Nada Surf and Big Star and that New Zealand power pop stuff..' So the split-single was born.. Easter taking the A with 'Doubt Rings', a propulsive guitar-lashed gallop thru the relationship forest with Bromide on the AA offering 'I'll Never Learn' from last year's 'I Woke Up' album on Scratchy, an up/downbeat reflective tale that dries solid on the choruses when the fuzz kicks in. Easter - 'A welcome throwback to the wry, self-lacerating alt.rock of the early 90s'Uncut Bromide -if you like Dinosaur Jr and The Replacements, you'll love this'MusicOMH

And there's more..! Easter had a whole EP ready to go so punters who buy the vinyl will get a free download code for the extra tracks. Then early next year both bands will be heading out fora few gigs to plug the single, joined by Southend's own fabulous guitar reverb-drenched 'Dark Globes' - who've also got wares to plug in the shape of newly released album 'Somewhere To Land'.

Highlights include "Great Again", the story of a failed writer with lofty intentions stalking a famous novelist, "Maggie Dickson", where a woman somehow survives hanging, then sets up a thriving pub overlooking the gallows, and "Cracks", a surprisingly swinging take on modern hermitism whose apocalyptic finale gives the band full licence to let rip.

Joey has long been something of an anomaly in the North London music scene, honing traditional song-craft while playing with more experimental musicians. So here amidst the rye banjo licks and folk fiddle we find the best and brightest of the Stoke Newington / Walthamstow avant garde.

There are cheery clarinet tootlings from Alex Ward, best known for his boundary shredding free improv and noise rock, anchored double bass and keys from Santiago Horro and Luke Barlow, both members of ear-melting math rock band Nought, and springy drums from Jem Doulton of the Thurston Moore Band and Roisin Murphy.

All of the above have been playing challenging and unpredictable music together for years in every conceivable combination, but here rub shoulders with players from more grounded folk traditions. So, if pithy twisted storytelling accompanied by a circus of wheezing accordion, twanging banjo, gypsy fiddle, wailing clarinet plus an occasional smattering of surf guitar, toy piano, spooky organ, musical saw, glockenspiel, mandolin, ukulele, scronking sax, scrap metal and cutlery (breathe..) intrigues your musical palate, please take a seat at the ringside..

Their extraordinarily different sound, great musicianship and stage presence alienated half the crowd and transfixed the rest. Were they mental or brave musical pioneers?'The Londonist

This is glam pop at its best' - The Quietus

'This was my introduction to Jonny Cola And The A Grades. It's left me intrigued, a little baffled and relieved that there are still young bands out there with the ambition to aim for the stars and the talent to succeed for the most part. Most bands that I love are doomed to die in obscurity and poverty. Just this once people, prove me wrong. They deserve better' louderthanwar
